[2:43] Between tariffs, climate threat, and geopolitical instability, now is a good time to reexamine your supply chain risk management practices, especially in front of April, which is Supply Chain Integrity Month. [2:57] Joining us today to discuss the role that sustainability efforts can play in managing supply chain risk is Nicole Sherwin, the Chief Impact Officer at EcoVadis, a provider of business sustainability ratings and insights. There's much to discuss about sustainability, ESG, and more! [3:17] Interview! Nicole Sherwin, welcome to RIMScast! [3:40] Nicole holds that businesses have a unique opportunity to magnify the positive social and environmental impacts of the things they do and where they engage. [3:56] Nicole is especially passionate about sustainable supply chains and the B2B relationship between buyers and suppliers. Procurement, the function that works with suppliers, holds a lot of power, in deciding which suppliers to spend money with. [4:13] Procurement wants to work with suppliers who can demonstrate they are strong partners in all senses of the word, but increasingly in managing their business's sustainability. [4:22] It can reduce risk, increase resilience, and open collaboration opportunities for procurement teams to drive growth and value for their business. [4:35] Procurement can leverage sustainability innovations of products and services of their suppliers into the design and selling of their products and services, which helps them meet the demands of customers and unlock new markets. That excites Nicole. [4:59] EcoVadis is a purpose-driven company, as stated in its corporate bylaws. Its purpose is to guide all companies toward a sustainable world. [5:14] Nicole's role as Chief Impact Officer is similar to a Chief Sustainability Officer. Part of her role is responsibility for implementing best-in-class sustainability practices internally. Some of those practices are set science-based carbon reduction targets. [5:31] EcoVadis runs a program with its suppliers to engage them in sustainable practices. [5:35] The bigger impact EcoVadis can have is via its solutions and driving sustainability transformation with its customers. EcoVadis is dedicated to embedding sustainability data and intelligence into business decisions. [5:50] EcoVadis has sustainability ratings and data it provides to help businesses benchmark themselves and improve their performance on environmental and social topics. It focuses on global supply chains and procurement organizations that engage their suppliers. [6:08] The impact EcoVadis has is as an enabler to guide companies to improve their practices on decarbonization, working conditions, and human rights, to create stronger sustainability performance with more resilient supply chains. [6:19] KPIs are important ways to measure. Action can be even more important. Don't wait to get the right measurement or figure out how to measure. Get to action, maybe specifically on decarbonization, where some of the metrics and KPIs might be hard to get to. [6:46] Nicole believes there are many risks to global supply chains. Some are geopolitical instability, tariffs impacting trade, and increased cyber attacks on critical infrastructure as things are becoming more digitalized. [7:05] Nicole mentions four sustainability topics. The first is climate-related risks, including extreme weather events, natural disasters, and long-term climactic changes, like rising temperatures and sea levels. Climate impacts raw material availability or shortages. [7:27] Droughts and changes in weather affect agricultural productivity. Weather could be linked to transportation and distribution disruption with infrastructure damages and closure of routes that impact business continuity. [7:45] The second sustainability topic is human rights and forced labor risks. These can be hard to detect. EcoVadis customers, working with their supply chain, have a strong focus on identifying and remediating those risks. [8:02] The third sustainability topic is the lack of transparency in the supply chain. Many companies are only scratching the surface of the potential risks as they engage their direct or tier-one suppliers. Behind the tier-one supplier are different products and raw materials. [8:23] How do you understand who those suppliers are and what are their ethical standards for sourcing and labor practices? [8:30] The fourth sustainability topic is ESG or sustainability supply chain regulations. Supply chains are complex. They're global. They could go deep into the multi-tier. Getting supply chain data needed for compliance is also complex. [8:45] The ESG regulation space is evolving. It's a moving target, both in the U.S. and in Europe. Being late or not being prepared for these regulations is a risk. [9:01] Plug Time! The Spencer Educational Foundation's goal to help build a talent pipeline of risk management and insurance professionals is achieved in part by its collaboration with risk management and insurance educators across the U.S. and Canada. [9:21] Since 2010, Spencer has awarded over $3.3 million in general grants to support over 130 student-centered experiential learning initiatives at universities and RMI non-profits. [9:35] Spencer's 2026 application process will open on May 1st, 2025, and close on July 30th, 2025. General Grant awardees are typically notified at the end of October. Learn more about Spencer's Grants through the Programs tab of SpencerEd.org. [9:54] Spencer Day is an annual virtual event where the risk management and insurance communities come together to celebrate the Spencer Educational Foundation and the incredible work they do to attract and retain talent in the risk management and insurance professions. [10:10] It's never too late to donate. You can send a belated Spencer Day card. This year, the Foundation is seeking donations of $46 in honor of Spencer's 46th year of operations. Visit SpencerEd.org/spencer-day for more details and donate. [10:34] Every contribution is an investment in the future of risk management. We appreciate your support. [10:40] Let's Get Back to Our Interview with Nicole Sherwin of EcoVadis! [11:02] Organizations can focus on sustainable procurement, creating an end-to-end program with suppliers, identifying where the risk is, assessing the performance, closing the gaps, and driving improvements on ethical, social, and environmental topics. That's a key foundation. [11:22] This can be done with on-site audits, online questionnaires, certifications that can be collected, and verification technology. Companies are deploying targeted engagements with suppliers that align with their corporate sustainability goals. [11:39] Decarbonization of the supply chain is a key sustainability goal. It starts by understanding a supplier's carbon footprint. [11:47] A vast majority of the supply chain is small-to-medium companies (SMEs) in emerging markets. They don't know where to start calculating their Scope 1 and Scope 2 indirect emissions. There are a lot of carbon estimators that can support suppliers to calculate those. [12:03] These estimates can be used by procurement organizations to calculate their Scope 3 emissions. [12:11] Nicole talks of transitioning to renewable energy sources, energy-efficient buildings, and manufacturing equipment, depending on the industry, optimizing transport, and localizing sourcing. Can you get closer to the source from the suppliers you're working with? [12:34] Look for eco-friendly materials that can be reused and recycled at the end of life. Use life-cycle assessments (LCA). Some tools can be used to support sustainable product design. [12:58] Life cycle assessments require a level of expertise. Tools and technologies for LCA are becoming much more advanced and make it easier for SMEs to adopt at-scale deployments across multiple product areas. [13:26] Dimensions of ROI can be incorporated into sustainability. The centerpiece of sustainability is looking at the environmental and social impacts of materials. Figuring ROI on a sustainability initiative is complex. [14:12] EcoVadis did a report with Bain, “ESG Financial Performance.” Companies at the forefront of working on sustainable procurement have a profitability margin of three percentage points above those who don't focus on their suppliers' environmental and ethical practices. [14:32] That research also showed that companies in natural resources, transportation, or industrial goods that had a high EcoVadis rating on their sustainability performance had higher EBITDA margins. [14:53] Nicole says, succeeding with sustainability means thinking about it as an integrated approach to solving these core business challenges. Sustainability can reduce risk, increase resilience, and drive innovation and sales revenue through the offering of sustainable solutions. [15:24] Plug Time! RIMS Webinars! On March 13th, our friends from Global Risk Consultants will return to discuss “How to Make Your Property Insurance Submission AI-Ready”. [15:30] On Wednesday, March 26th at 2:00 p.m. Eastern Time, members of the RIMS Strategic and Enterprise Risk Management Council will extend the dialog that began in the recent RIMS Executive Report “Understanding Interconnected Risks”. [15:53] On Thursday, March 27th, Descartes Underwriting will make its RIMS Webinar debut with a session about parametric insurance. On April 10th, Audit Board will present, “What Non-CISO Risk Executives Should Know about Cyber Risks in 2025.” [16:09] Following the success of their recent webinar, HUB International returns for the next installment of their Ready for Tomorrow Series, “From Defense to Prevention: Strengthening Your Liability Risk Management Approach”. That session will be on April 17th. [16:24] More webinars will be announced soon and added to the RIMS.org/webinars page. Go there to register. Registration is complimentary for RIMS members. [16:36] The Conclusion of My Interview with EcoVadis Chief Impact Officer, Nicole Sherwin! [16:51] Nicole shares some sustainability plan pointers. Having a data-driven approach is key, using accurate, verified data to measure progress and inform decision-making. EcoVadis issues a Sustainable Procurement Barometer every three years. It was updated at the end of 2024. [17:10] Companies that were showing a high level of maturity in sustainability and ESG were more than two times more likely to engage key stakeholders strategically with data. The C-Suite cares about KPIs. Being able to show performance and outputs catches their attention. [17:33] Taking a data-driven approach, even if it's starting with a small set of data from proof of concept of deployment can be a way to get their attention and bring in additional investment. Cross-department collaboration is key. Sustainability is a responsibility across the organization. [17:55] We increasingly see that sustainability is integrated into performance bonuses, not just for senior executives, but also for managers across departments. It's a company-wide initiative to drive sustainability. [18:06] In the Sustainable Procurement Barometer, 45% of the suppliers say that they see sustainability as important to their customers and are engaged about it as partners. However, 46% see it as important to their customers but don't find it in their relationship. [18:28] Sometimes Procurement can see a risk in the supply chain we see as important but they don't have enough of a program around embedding collaboration with a supplier. [18:40] Collaboration can be putting it in contract clauses, setting sustainability targets to where they want to see them improve, and running capability building and training in decarbonization. [19:13] Forced labor can lie under the surface if you don't look for it. EcoVadis customers are looking to understand where human rights and forced labor are happening in the supply chain.  [19:29] One effective technology is engaging workers through automated worker surveys and grievance mechanisms, directly to workers through SMS or WhatsApp. It's been extraordinarily powerful, allowing companies to work on remediation efforts. [20:47] Nicole thinks the SEC's decision to pause indefinitely its Climate Disclosure Rules will have an impact on corporate accountability. Companies are not being mandated to disclose on climate. However, from an investor perspective, the demand for disclosure is still there. [21:08] For investors, these regulations are seen in a positive light for those assessing climate-related risk, and wanting to accelerate investment toward a more sustainable economy. They want standardized and comparable data to manage these risks and impacts. [21:27] Companies face a potential loss of investment opportunities if they don't disclose climate impact data in a common format. [21:36] Companies will have to decide if they're going to voluntarily disclose climate-related information or not. They will have to if they want to be considered by investors, or even financial institutions, who are increasingly requesting this kind of information for lending or underwriting. [21:54] There are international standards that continue to emphasize consistent reporting. The Task Force on Climate-Related Financial Disclosures (TCFD) is one. The Sustainability Standards Board offers The Climate-Related Risk Disclosure Framework. [22:15] Companies can voluntarily report their climate-related risk using the available frameworks. [22:27] Companies know that there is a reputation risk to transparency. For some companies, up to 90% of their carbon footprint is in their supply chain. Getting that data and driving reductions in their supply chain is complicated. [22:52] The economic driver of investors and access to finance are incentives for companies to disclose climate-related risk data. Each company has to decide. [23:41] Nicole thinks that ESG is under fire in the U.S. However, she believes that the ESG frameworks supported by the risk community help businesses anticipate and manage risks. That's not going anywhere. There's a business imperative here. [24:17] Companies that get this understand and have the experience of how sustainability interconnects to core business goals of risk, resilience, competitiveness, and unlocking new market share, driving new sales with demand for sustainability solutions and products. [24:38] The market's focus on long-term resilience will keep it at the forefront. Those companies that are committing to it will be able to demonstrate resilience and transcend other companies that drop ESG for now. [24:49] We're ending on a hopeful note. Nicole, it's been a pleasure, of course, and it's very insightful to get a glimpse into your mind and perspective. Thank you so much for joining us here on RIMScast! Following a series of strategic acquisitions, the Markerstudy Insurance Group faced key challenges of modernising and integrating multiple technology systems, while improving the sustainability of its digital infrastructure. By deploying the energy efficient and end-to-end EcoStruxure Data Centre Solutions, Markerstudy has opted for world-leading resilience of its Data Centres. This deployment has allowed better control over its critical IT and network environments, helping it to monitor and manage them for better efficiency, and to lower the emissions associated with data processing and storage. Schneider Electric, the leader in digital transformation of energy management and automation, has worked with its EcoXpert Partners, on365, to deliver a series of data centre and critical power projects to Markerstudy Group - one of the fastest growing providers of general insurance services for more than eight million customers across the UK. Working together with on365, a provider of resilient and energy efficient critical physical infrastructure and utility services, Schneider Electric and its longstanding EcoXpert Partners devised an upgrade and consolidation strategy for Markerstudy's electrical infrastructure, data centres and networking systems. Equal consideration was given to the need for increased reliability, security, and energy efficiency, while helping the organisation to better manage and scale its distributed systems. As part of the strategy, the Group chose to standardise on key components from Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure for Data Centres portfolio, including its Galaxy V-series three phase UPS's and APC Smart-UPS RT single phase UPS, EcoStruxure Row Data Center solution, InRow DX cooling units and Chilled Water systems, APC Racks and PDUs and EcoStruxure IT Expert DCIM software. Additionally, on365 secured a strategic five-year, Managed Service Level Agreement (SLA) to manage and maintain all critical power and cooling infrastructure on behalf of the insurance group - helping not only to improve the efficiency and resiliency of its systems, but to reduce its carbon emissions. Sustainable Expansion for Schneider Electric Markerstudy Group was founded in 2001 and today serves over eight million customers, employing more than 7,000 people across 40 brands. In 2020 it acquired Co-op Insurance's underwriting business, followed by BGL Insurance and Lloyd's broker Clegg Gifford in 2021, and Atlanta Insurance in 2024. This expansion presented several technological challenges, which included integrating multiple technology systems, while managing a diverse portfolio of digital infrastructure, including several data centres and IT systems distributed across its offices and customer support centres. The Group is fiercely committed to sustainability, aiming to reduce the energy usage and carbon emissions across its operations. To address these goals and stay updated on new technological advancements, it continues to collaborate with on365 and Schneider Electric, while working with Net Zero consultancy Energise, and mapping its operations to the Greenhouse Gas Protocol (GHG), which earned it a Bronze sustainability rating from EcoVadis. Modernisation Strategy Markerstudy's strategy to standardise on Schneider Electric technologies, and to modernise its infrastructure portfolio began in 2012, when it first commissioned on365 to design and build a data centre at its Chesterfield contact centre. The data centre utilised Schneider Electric's EcoStruxure Row Data Centre solution, together with InRow DX cooling units to maximise energy efficiency, and minimise the threat of downtime from thermal shutdowns. During 2023, on365 implemented a new main substation Transformer and Primary Switchboard to replace 30-year-old, legacy electrical equipment. Designed using IoT-enabled components for ease of monitoring and management, the new system has future-proofed Markerstudy for the integration of renewable energy at its offices, while ...

Business travel remains one of our largest sources of greenhouse emissions, accounting for 26% of the UK's total emissions. In an ideal world, no one would have to travel to work or events, some might even point to the way everyone adapted in COVID as a prime example of this in practice. However, for many that model of work is not feasible in the long-term. So, how can we reduce this unavoidable stream of emissions? Businesses are starting to take the right steps, however, today's guest is paving the way as a shining example of sustainable business travel and events management.   In this episode, Mel is joined by Christopher Truss, Global Sustainability Director at Reed & Mackay, to discuss their impressive existing ISO Standard portfolio and their journey towards ISO 14064 carbon verification. [02:40] Who is Chris?: Chris has had over 20 years experience in the business travel industry. He is currently responsible for driving the sustainability agenda at Reed & Mackay, which includes the development of services and solutions that their clients require to meet their own sustainability initiatives. He also manages a wide range of third-party suppliers. A lesser know fact about Chris is in a band, playing the folk fiddle and singing in pubs around Yorkshire. He also plays tennis in the over 45 category for Yorkshire! [04:50] Who are Reed & Mackay? – Reed & Mackay are a global travel management and event management business. They help clients all the way from picking up the telephone and making bookings on their behalf, helping them source appropriate venues for their events and then managing the overall spend, the supply chain and ultimately reporting back to them on what they've been up to and how they can improve their processes and save money. Reed & Mackay are highly regarded for their quality of services, especially within the professional services sector, and they proudly boast a number of large blue chip clients. [05:50] What are some of the highlights in Reed & Mackay's Sustainability and Responsible Business Report? When Chris came into his latest role, he looked to tackle two main points: ·      How can Reed & Mackay operate sustainably? ·      How can we articulate that to our clients? As a result of the work Chris has done, Reed & Mackay have signed up to the United Nations Global Compact and have aligned themselves with the UN's Sustainable Development Goals. They have also become an EcoVadis rated supplier and are undertaking their first Carbon Reduction Plan disclosure. From a corporate responsibility point of view, they have made great strides to improve their gender pay gap. They are also ensuring the integrity of their charitable partnerships. [08:00] What are some of the sustainability initiatives that Reed & Mackay have started? Reed & Mackay support a charity called 4Ocean, who are trying to remove as much plastic from our oceans as possible. They selected this charity in particular due to it's global reach, embodying the nature of Reed & Mackay's global influence in 13 countries for the past 10 years. They recognised the need to support a sustainability based charity as corporate travel is highly polluting, so this is a form of taking responsibility and looking at where they can assist to reduce environmental damage. 4Oceans also allows their employees to get involved directly, should they choose to take some time out of the office to help with ocean clean-up. [09:55] What ISO Standards are Reed & Mackay certified to? They are currently certified to: ·      ISO 27001 Information Security ·      ISO 14001 Environmental Management ·      ISO 22301 Business Continuity ·      ISO 9001 Quality Management All of which they have been certified to for over 10 years now! They acted as a foundation for Chris to drive his sustainability agenda. [11:10] How are these ISO Standards managed across the business? – Reed & Mackay have a dedicated Security and Trust team that manage all ISO certifications, in addition to their other responsibilities. All of the ISO Standards are a part of their Integrated Management System, which sits alongside their policies and procedures for the business that are managed by a central team. This has provided them with an invaluable foundation to ensure the delivery of quality services, client satisfaction and continual improvement. [12:45] What is the demand for sustainability within the business travel sector? They are receiving more requirements and requests from clients in regard to their own operational CO2 footprint, which is needed for clients own reporting requirements as Reed & Mackay would count towards many clients Scope 3 emissions. There is also a need for more transparency with carbon reporting, including the use of credible calculation methodology's. The verification of GHG emissions also gives clients more confidence that businesses are doing what they say they're doing. [14:15] What was the main driver behind Reed & Mackay gaining ISO 14064 verification?: While they felt confident in their sustainability efforts up to a certain point, they wanted someone to come in and mark their homework to make sure they were doing the right thing. With the increase in client demand for credible sustainability reporting, it was vital to pursue various CPD disclosures such as EcoVadis and prepare for upcoming legislation like CSRD. To ensure they were in the best possible shape to give the information requested by clients and other stakeholders, they needed am accurate and reliable method of verification, which is what ISO 14064 could provide. [15:40] What were the main challenges in obtaining ISO 14064 verification?: Just getting a hold of the raw data was the most difficult part, although they found it to be a very enlightening experience too. Having to dig to find the right information helped Chris to understand the business better, giving him a greater visibility on where their carbon emissions are coming from and where there are opportunities to reduce those. You have to be very tenacious to get all the necessary data. Chris highlights purchased goods and services data as particularly challenging to obtain due to its granular nature. Now they have been through this process once, they've got a system in place to make data collection a lot easier in future. [18:55] What impact has ISO 14064 verification had on Reed & Mackay?: It's helped from an internal perspective as people now have a greater visibility and understanding of the impact that have on an individual basis. This in turn creates a strong launchpad for their Net Zero strategy. From an external perspective, it's given Reed & Mackay a lot more confidence in their own processes and their ability to work with their clients towards sustainability goals. [20:00] What were the main benefits of getting ISO 14064 verified?: Giving clients, stakeholder and employees confidence: The verification calculation is reliable, and so they can be confident in relaying the facts and figures to interested parties. A great insight: The data has provided huge insights into how the business operates and where it's biggest emissions sources lie. This is vital to know before you take steps to try and reduce your current impact. Ability to create an accurate Carbon Reduction Plan: Once again, with confidence in having the correct data to hand, they are able to formulate an accurate Carbon Reduction Plan which can be realistically achieved. Anti Green-washing: Consumers are crying out for a reliable sign of credibility. Simply having an environmental policy statement may have been enough 10 years ago, but that's not the case now. People expect evidence of your sustainability claims. [21:50] Chris's top tip for anyone considering ISO 14064 verification: Just get started and don't be scared by the process. Though it may seem daunting to start, you will actually be in a much better position than when you started. Having verified data and awareness of where that data comes from and what it means on a larger scale will be vital to looking for opportunities for improvement. So, if you want to improve your sustainability, you just need to get cracking! [23:20] How are Reed & Mackay helping organisations improve the sustainability of their travel?: Reed & Mackay's ambition is to make sure that clients understand the impact of their choices at every single step of their journey. To help, they provide the carbon footprint of every booking they make, whether that be through their site or with a consultant. They also have approval processes built into their systems, which can be based on carbon. For example, if a client doesn't want to take the lowest carbon option on a particular journey, they can add required approval from an additional person within that client's organisation. So it adds a level of accountability over the choices people make. They also provide full reporting on business travel activity and where potential savings have been missed. This is a valuable tool if they need to provide travel data to carbon consultants for example, they'll already have all of those granular reports prepared. These reports will highlight where clients haven't taken the lowest carbon option, i.e. where they could travel in a group instead of individually. Reed & Mackay's intention is to make sure people have visibility of carbon alongside cost so clients can make a fair and balanced decision. Additional services include: ·      Able to set carbon budgets across a business ·      Ability to purchase carbon credits for offsetting purposes ·      Opportunities to mitigate carbon emissions through offsetting, or decarbonise through Carbon Reduction Plans over a period of time [28:50] Chris's book recommendation: His Dark Materials by Philip Pullman [29:15] Chris's favourite quote: You can't measure success if you have never failed – Steffi Graf If you would like to learn more about Reed & Mackay, and their sustainability initiatives, visit their website. Greenhouse Gas (GHG) accounting has become increasingly important in recent years due to the demand for more environmental accountability. [02:30] Episode summary: Mel will look at the similarities and differences between the 2 leading GHG emissions reporting frameworks, the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064-1:2018. [02:20] What are the 2 leading GHG accounting frameworks? – Greenhouse gas (GHG) accounting has become increasingly important for organisations seeking to manage their environmental impact and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts. Two prominent frameworks guide this process: ISO 14064-1:2018 and the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. Climate change concerns necessitate robust methodologies for quantifying and reporting organisational GHG emissions. Standardised frameworks offer a transparent and reliable approach for organisations to measure their impact and contribute to environmental sustainability goals. This article examines two leading frameworks: ISO 14064-1:2018 and the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard. [06:10] What are the similarities between the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064? – GHG Scope Definition: Both frameworks categorise emissions into three scopes: Scope 1 (direct emissions from owned or controlled sources), Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased electricity, heat, or steam), and Scope 3 (other indirect emissions throughout the value chain). In general, the GHG Emissions covered in the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard conform to ISO 14064-1 if significant Sope 3 GHG emissions and GHG removals are both considered. Quantification Principles: Both emphasize the importance of accuracy, completeness, consistency, transparency, and relevance when quantifying emissions. GHG Reporting Boundaries: Both require clear definition of the organisational boundaries for which emissions are quantified. GHG Inventory: Both frameworks guide the development of a GHG inventory, a comprehensive record of all organisational emissions. [09:15] What are the differences between the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064? – Focus: ISO 14064-1 is a more procedural framework, outlining the steps for quantifying, reporting, and verifying GHG emissions. The GHG Protocol, on the other hand, offers detailed guidance on calculating emissions for various activities and sectors but lacks formal verification requirements. Level of Detail: The GHG Protocol provides a more comprehensive and detailed approach, including calculation methods, guidance on emission factors, and best practices. ISO 14064-1 offers a less prescriptive approach, allowing organisations to choose calculation methodologies based on their specific needs. Avoided GHG Emissions: The concept of avoided GHG emissions is not addressed in ISO 14064-1.  However, the GHG Protocol Corporate Standard addresses the quantification of avoided emissions, which are required to be reported separately. Verification: Verification by a third-party verifier is optional under the GHG Protocol but mandatory for organisations seeking public disclosure or certification under ISO 14064-1. Verification enhances the credibility and reliability of reported emissions data, this could be to schemes like EcoVadis. Value Chain Emissions: While both frameworks acknowledge Scope 3 emissions, the GHG Protocol offers a dedicated standard - the Corporate Value Chain (Scope 3) Standard - providing specific guidance on quantifying these emissions. Addressing GHG Emissions and Removals: ISO 14064-1 clearly address GHG emissions and removals for each  category and removals are therefore an inherent part of the GHG quantification. The guidance in the GHG protocol is not as clear but allows for the reporting of removals separately from GHG Emissions. [13:30] Join the isologyhub and get access to limitless ISO resources – From as little as £99 a month, you can have unlimited access to hundreds of online training courses and achieve certification for completion of courses along the way, which will take you from learner to practitioner to leader in no time. Simply head on over to the isologyhub to sign-up or book a demo. [17:05] Reporting on indirect emissions:  The main challenge for organisations is the reporting of indirect emissions (Scope 3), often leading to confusion based on a lack of clarity and understanding of how granular the data needs to be, combined with challenges extracting data from third-parties.  ISO 14064-1 is very clear regarding which Scope 3 emissions are to be included, whereas the GHG Protocol standard maybe viewed as more open to interpretation. In contrast, GHG Protocol standards require the inclusion of Scope 2 (indirect emissions from purchased energy); the inclusion of other indirect GHG Emissions under scope 3 is optional. The GHG Protocol standard is referred to in various GHG reporting and disclosure initiatives whose requirements for the reporting of the Scope 3 emissions vary.  Whereas ISO 14064-1 has been created and approved by representatives from 61 nations to determine a specification for Scope 3 emissions reporting. [20:30] Choosing the right Framework: The choice between ISO 14064-1 and the GHG Protocol depends on an organisation's specific needs and goals. Here are some considerations: ·      Is there a need for Verification? i.e. is it a mandatory requirement ·      What level of detail is required? If a detailed approach with extensive calculation guidance is preferred, the GHG Protocol might be more suitable. ·      Resource availability – Do you have the resource to do this yourself or will you need a helping hand? ·      Disclosure reporting requirements – check what you need to comply with as this could determine which framework you use. [23:30] How can the GHG Protocol and ISO 14064 complement each other? -  This podcast may have you thinking that it has to be one or the other, but in actuality the two frameworks can be used together effectively. Organisations can utilise the GHG Protocol's detailed guidance to develop their GHG inventory and then follow ISO 14064-1's process for verification and reporting. In this week's episode, I had the privilege of talking to Julia Salant from EcoVadis, where we tackled the increasingly essential role of technology in scaling up sustainable practices within supply chains. Julia elucidated EcoVadis' digital solutions, designed to assess and improve the sustainability performance of their vast network of companies. We dived into the specifics of their three main offerings: the Sustainability Business Rating solution, the iQ Plus tool for regulatory risk scanning, and the Carbon Action Manager for suppliers' climate action. Julia highlighted the simplicity of sharing sustainability and carbon scorecards within their network, a system that empowers companies to meet growing regulatory demands efficiently. We also grappled with the trajectory of emissions reporting and the shift from voluntary to mandatory regulations, including the potential future need for audited scope three emissions. Julia presented a candid perspective on the catalysts for genuine change, emphasising the power of investor demands and the buyer-supplier relationship over regulatory measures. An insightful segment of our chat focused on strategies for engaging suppliers in sustainability reporting and how established customer-supplier dynamics foster commitment to decarbonisation. Julia shared success stories, underscoring the practical steps companies can take to initiate or advance their sustainability journeys.Tune in for a thorough dissection of the sustainability challenges faced by businesses today and how technology, coupled with targeted strategies, can enhance our collective effort to mitigate climate change. The goal of this series is to provide useful information for consumers regarding PFAS, specifically within the outdoor industry, but also for those of us working in the industry. I learned from every single person that I interviewed and talked to about the topic of PFAS, and one of the patterns I noticed during production was that most of the European brands like Jack Wolfskin, Fjallraven, and Houdini Sportswear were early adopters of phasing PFAS out of their products.  As early as 2009, some of these brands had already begun or, at the very least, made the decision to remove harmful chemicals from their product line. This begs the question, what took the rest of the industry so long to catch up when there were several examples of success just across the ocean? As more regulations come into play, many outdoor brands have moved the needle and promised to phase PFAS out of their products and apparel by 2025.  While this is great news, what's curious as a consumer is that alternative chemistry has existed for quite some time. Brands like Nikwax never needed to use harmful chemicals to achieve waterproof capabilities, and now Nikwax is one brand leading the charge with industry-wide innovations with cleaner chemistry.   In later episodes, we will explore how both European and US brands have moved to phase out PFAS in their product lines, but before we get to that, it is worth noting that there have always been alternatives. This prevents company leadership from making necessary changes, and prevents people from feeling fulfilled, recognized, and included at work. At AllVoices, we want to change that by providing a completely safe, anonymous way for people to report issues directly to company leaders. This allows company leadership real transparency into what's happening in their companies—and the motivation to address issues quickly. ESGs are one of those topics that, IMO, everyone should understand. And what they do and do not mean. For better or worse, ESG ratings will, and already are, have a profound impact on how business is done, on emerging regulations, and in the world of corporate investment. There's a lot to unpack. For this week's episode, I was joined by Gracee Shorter, who is a sustainability solutions provider at Ecovadis to help break it down. Enjoy!   Interested in supporting the show?
