Thanks for joining us for another episode of highlighting change makers and their inspirational work towards the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In this episode: Why worry about the presence of grass carp in the Great Lakes? What is electrofishing, and how does it combat invasive species? Revising protocols for effective grass carp removal Hear from Bob Mapes - a Grass Carp Strike Team Crew Leader for the University of Toledo. Bob talks about the grass carp removal project, aimed at eradicating the invasive grass carp species in the Great Lakes. The primary control method is electrofishing, where electricity immobilizes the fish for capture. Research shows that about 90% of grass carp captures occur within the first 17 minutes of electrofishing, leading to a protocol change that shortens the electrofishing time from 30 minutes to 22 minutes.
