RMA-Episode 78 Show Notes: Can America Recover? Evan Haines sure thinks so, and he is our guest this week on RMA. In addition to being the co-founder and co-CEO of Oro House Recovery Centers, Evan, along with his partner Bob Forest, are the authors of the new book, Can America Recover, a sprawling look at the past, present and future of the recovery movement in America, and where America itself fits into the addiction narrative. Can America Recover posits that treating the symptoms of the individual and treating the addict as a scapegoat, absolve us from the pressing need to address the larger, more intractable social problems of childhood trauma, alienation and isolation that are the breeding grounds for addiction. Oro Recovery believes that the way to treat addiction is not by using shame or forcing a client to adhere to a rigid set of rules, but through compassionate care, deep listening and creating an environment where the individual feels empowered to utilize the healing power that already exists inside of them. It's a great conversation with a fascinating polymath, and we know you're going to like this one. We hear all about the origins of Oro, Evan's traumatic and sometime tragic childhood, and his eventual triumph in his recovery and in founding Oro. Then Evan reports on the great AA myth: "was Bill Wilson totally tripping on LSD?", mysticism in 12 step and so much more on a deep dive into the history and ideology within addiction and recovery. This week we're talking to Alexis Haines, who you will probably know her by her maiden name, Alexis Neiers. Alexis was a pop culture sensation in the late noughties - star of the reality TV series 'Pretty Wild', and best known for her involvement in the infamous ‘Bling Ring', a group of LA teens who were sentenced to prison for a string of burglaries of high profile celebrities in 2009. The case was immortalised by Sofia Coppola's 2013 movie, 'The Bling Ring', in which Emma Watson starred as Alexis - portraying her as a superficial, materialistic teen with no substance. It was a description first made by Nancy Jo Sales in her article for Vanity Fair, 'The Suspects Wore Louboutins' - but it wasn't exactly accurate. In fact, viewed ten years after the fact, we think Alexis is one of the most misunderstood women in modern popular culture. Portrayed as a fame-obsessed teen and mocked by the internet, Haines was actually a trauma-informed sexual assault survivor and teenage drug addict. Now, at 29, she's a drugs and alcohol councillor and a public advocate for youth addiction and sobriety. With her husband, Evan Haines, she co-runs the Alo House Recovery Centre, which has helped thousands of people achieve sobriety. She has written a book and launched a podcast on the same topic, both called Recovering From Reality, and is a registered doula - helping advocate for the racial gaps in maternal mortality. Alexis was really open with us about the sexist treatment she faced in the media and court system, and talks about how it feels to have the public's perception of you be so at odds with who you actually are. We think you're going to love this conversation. If you want to find out more about Alexis, listen to her podcast, Recovering from Reality.Just a warning this episode discusses drug addiction, mental health, sexual assault and suicidal ideation and may not be appropriate for everyone. Evan Haines struggled with alcohol addiction for years before a near death car accident caused by his own intoxication landed him in jail. From there he made a decision to get help, get sober, and went on with his best friend to start a sober living home that helped others. This eventually evolved into multiple treatment centers called Alo House Recovery, which is based out of Los Angeles. This week, Evan and I recorded a Q&A for the podcast and over on Instagram live! You guys sent in a bunch of good questions, and we get deep into topics like addiction treatment, our personal recovery, relationships, and more. We share our thoughts on medication assisted treatment, or using drugs like Suboxone to reduce the chance of overdose. We also talk about harm reduction, and ways we can support those who are active addicts. Make sure to educate yourself on this topic before forming an opinion. We also answer a question about 12 Steps and how its community aspect is so beneficial. I dive into the reasons behind why people have addiction, and how we can do the work to get to the root of our traumas. Evan shares his past drugs of choice and if either of us get triggered to use. As far as relationship questions, we talk about how to navigate marital conflict, our favorite things about each other, and our favorite memories. We also talk about our age difference and whether it affects us. Evan also answers if my past scared him! Koparibeauty.com/Reality for 15% off your order Produced by Dear Media
This week, my husband Evan and I are bringing an episode to you guys while quarantined, or social distancing, in our home. We have made every effort possible to stay home, and hope you all stay safe and healthy during this global pandemic. Evan is forever calm, cool and collected, so I thought he'd be a great guest for these times. We talk about Evan’s addiction story, our relationship, marriage, and first impressions of each other, and his almost 15-year sobriety. We also talk about our treatment center, Alo House, and what’s happening in the treatment world. We know during this time of isolation, people can really struggle with mental health, so we are discussing how to handle that as well. Evan and I are highly sensitive and empathic people, as most who struggle with addiction are. We believe these empaths are truly the mystics, truth-tellers, and way-showers of our planet, and need to be properly cared for. They are not the crazy ones! Our mission with addiction treatment is to help show people their own power, and remove the stigma around suffering. TheOuai.com with code: REALITY for 3 Free Samples with your order. Romantic relationships in sobriety get a pretty bad wrap, so on this episode of Recovering from Reality, I sit down with my husband (and best friend) Evan Haines as we share some lessons we've learned along our path to recovery. This week we're celebrating our 7 year wedding anniversary and it feels like the perfect time to reflect on the story of how we met. When I first met Evan (yes, we met in AA) I would listen to him talk and feel almost envious of the things he would say. He seemed so... enlightened. I looked up to him in a way and he inspired me from our very first date. On our second date he asked to meet my mom and later that night he broke up with me. Here's just one example of the wisdom Evan drops throughout the episode, "In recovery, we learn to accept ourselves, and in finding that compassion for ourselves we can find it for others." #andsoitis

Today I will be speaking with my equally charming and knowledgeable Guest, Evan Haines, about what he has coined 'solving the Riddle of Addiction.' He is co-founder of an innovative drug treatment program called 'Alo House Recovery Centers', formerly known as Acadia Malibu. Evan grew up with addiction problems all around him, and for many years suffered from his own issues. He then embarked on a years-long recovery journey. And along the way, Evan became 'obsessed,' as he puts it, with solving 'the riddle of addiction treatment.' We will discuss both his and my journey, personally and professionally, in this area.
