Ginelle Testa sought connection in chat rooms as a kid, which led her to webcam for coins and validation. Nancy Jo Sales was “very sexualized” in childhood, too, then experienced common and related challenges while using dating apps as a middle-aged woman.   Both women wrote powerful memoirs about their experiences – Ginelle's with addiction and seeking belonging; Nancy Jo's with online dating. And they both have a lot to say about self-acceptance, cultivating healthy relationships and pleasure - in and outside of the bedroom.   Nancy Jo's story was originally released in a 2021 episode.   This episode touches on sensitive topics, such as abuse and eating disorders. Coppola based the script on Nancy Jo Sales' 2010 Vanity Fair article, "The Suspects Wore Louboutins". Our returning guest is the Sparkle Queen known as Laura Lawrence ("9 to 5"). Laura has has seen the film many times, jammed out to the soundtrack many MORE times, and brings a shopping bag full of fun facts.  We also get into the film's prescience for today's influencer culture, and why kids are less inclined to aspire to landing "a good job". On the Lunchtime Poll, we reveal the things we have in such abundance, we might not notice getting robbed.

She shares how her resonation with teens and her memories of standing in the same shoes as the young women she interviewed have played a significant role in work. The conversation covers pressing issues like the lack of regulations in digital spaces, the safety concerns related to social media, and the exploitation prevalent in the media. Have you ever felt frustrated, alone, anxious or depressed while using dating apps? Or wondered why swiping has led to a lot more swiping than actual dates? If so, you're far from alone and there are reasons (that have nothing to do with you!) for all of that.    While some people do find healthy, happy experiences and relationships through the apps, Nancy Jo Sales asserts that the big corporations running them are more interested in getting you hooked than finding lasting romance or love—and that using these apps is actually nothing like meeting someone in a bar (as many folks suggest), unless that bar were racist, transphobic and dangerous.   In her new memoir, Nothing Personal: My Secret Life in the Dating App Inferno, Nancy Jo shares her own experience using the apps starting at age 49 and investigates the impact of Big Dating. And she recently joined August to discuss its themes and happenings.   A few things you'll learn about in the episode:   A few of Nancy Jo's sex and dating via app experiences, from funny, sicy and fun to dark and terrifying The harm these apps can do if you keep on swiping How “technoference” impacts intimacy and relationships The impact of sexualization of girls from a young age Why Nancy Jo decided to write such an open, honest book and what she hopes readers will glean from it   Learn more about Nancy Jo Sales: nancyjosales.com   Check out Dr. Megan's latest Pleasure Picks: greatlifegreatsex.com/pleasurepicks    Support the show and get fun extras! patreon.com/girlboner     Sign up for occasional email updates or submit a question: augustmclaughlin.com

Dating in the digital age has never been more complicated. She later directed and released the 2018 HBO documentary Swiped: Hooking Up in the Digital Age, a study of how the algorithms of big tech impact govern our dating lives even if companies claim their addictive effects are incidental. Do you remember that substitute teacher that was mostly assigned to your school, someone who was so awesome, someone you could relate to and you just loved? Well, that's Tamara, figuratively and literally. One of her many jobs is as a substitute teacher and a soon-to-be-published author of her new novel called, DESPITE THE BUZZ! which is slated to release on mother's day of 2021.  Despite The Buzz is a fictionalized tale about technology's toll; it's a human interest story with heart and a sociological study of modern times--pre-pandemic.   The novel centers around a motivated character named Miss Oliver who raises awareness about screen use inside her Reflective Writing class. The book depicts the demands upon school teachers and especially to those that grew up before and after current technology. But when an intimate act is shared between students over social media, an inciting incident demonstrates that the potential in our pockets could be lethal. By the way, my remarkable friend regularly volunteers as the secretary for Parent Club at her children's school and was able to squeeze in time to write and professionally edit her new novel over the past 4 years while also starring in USA Today's Storytellers' Project.  We talk about how writing is healing, and how it led her to get the book published. Tamara teaches us that even though you may not know it at the time, everything you do has a purpose and each person you meet has a meaningful impact on you.  She also learned she had to prioritize herself, which wasn't always easy as a wife of a firefighter and mother of two children under the age of 10, especially during a pandemic. This novel journey of hers, which took her "4 long years to write," is a beautiful testament to self-love and self-care. You see, self-love is also asking for help, tending to your dreams in addition to all your responsibilities that you have in life.  Tamara Miller Davis is a writer, author, substitute and ESL teacher, and is a U.S. Coast Guard Veteran who hails from Michigan.  She has a B.A. and teaching credentials from CSUCI.  Tamara's reading list, these are the authors that influenced her while writing Despite The Buzz:   Unselfie: Why Empathetic Kids Succeed in Our All-About-Me World by Michelle Borba,  Amusing Ourselves to Death by Neil Postman, A Memoir On Writing by Stephen King, Textbook by Amy Krouse Rosenthal, Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert, Daring Greatly and The Gifts of Imperfection by Brené Brown, The Wisdom of Sundays by Oprah Winfrey, Alone Together by Sherry Turkle, American Girls: Social Media and the Secret Lives of Teenagers by Nancy Jo Sales , Girl, Wash Your Face by Rachel Hollis, Lives of Girls and Women by Alice Munro, Educated by Tara Westover, This Will Only Hurt a Little by Busy Phillips, Inside Out by Demi Moore, A Book of American Martyrs by Joyce Carol Oats, The Split by Randi Harvey, Life by the Cup by Zhena Muzyka, Islands Apart by Ken McAlpine, Leaving Home by Garrison Keillor, Love in the Time of Cholera by Gabriel García Márquez, To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee  Contact: www.despitethebuzz.com, Facebook Despite-the-Buzz-130765802059455, Instagram @TamaraMillerDavis P.S.  Have you been loving the podcast? In Episode 2, Bolton and Grace recap the 2013 movie, The Bling Ring, and discuss the facts of the true crime story that the movie is based on.Between October 2008 through November 2009, several celebrities living around Hollywood, California were burglarized. Most people were shocked to find out the burglars were teenagers/young adults from a nearby wealthy neighborhood. Nancy Jo Sales covered the story in her March 2010 Vanity Fair article, "The Suspects Wore Louboutins." In writing this article, Sales spoke at length to some of the young suspects, as well as the lead investigator on the case. This article serves as the basis for the 2013 movie, The Bling Ring, directed by Sofia Coppola. This week we're talking to Alexis Haines, who you will probably know her by her maiden name, Alexis Neiers. Alexis was a pop culture sensation in the late noughties - star of the reality TV series 'Pretty Wild', and best known for her involvement in the infamous ‘Bling Ring', a group of LA teens who were sentenced to prison for a string of burglaries of high profile celebrities in 2009. The case was immortalised by Sofia Coppola's 2013 movie, 'The Bling Ring', in which Emma Watson starred as Alexis - portraying her as a superficial, materialistic teen with no substance. It was a description first made by Nancy Jo Sales in her article for Vanity Fair, 'The Suspects Wore Louboutins' - but it wasn't exactly accurate. In fact, viewed ten years after the fact, we think Alexis is one of the most misunderstood women in modern popular culture. Portrayed as a fame-obsessed teen and mocked by the internet, Haines was actually a trauma-informed sexual assault survivor and teenage drug addict. Now, at 29, she's a drugs and alcohol councillor and a public advocate for youth addiction and sobriety. With her husband, Evan Haines, she co-runs the Alo House Recovery Centre, which has helped thousands of people achieve sobriety. She has written a book and launched a podcast on the same topic, both called Recovering From Reality, and is a registered doula - helping advocate for the racial gaps in maternal mortality. Alexis was really open with us about the sexist treatment she faced in the media and court system, and talks about how it feels to have the public's perception of you be so at odds with who you actually are. We think you're going to love this conversation. If you want to find out more about Alexis, listen to her podcast, Recovering from Reality.Just a warning this episode discusses drug addiction, mental health, sexual assault and suicidal ideation and may not be appropriate for everyone. In her book, American Girls, Nancy Jo Sales writes these sobering words regarding what it’s like to grow up as a girl in today’s youth culture: “The constant seeking of likes and attention on social media seems for many girls to feel like being a contestant in a never-ending beauty pageant in which they forever performing to be please the judges.” Navigating life in our appearance-obsessed world is dangerous business for girls and boys, young and old alike. What are the messages our girls are hearing regarding their identity? How do these messages undermine their flourishing? And what can the home and church do to change the destructive trajectory our girls are on? Whisper. Yik Yak. Vine. YouTube. Kik. Ask.fm. Tinder. The dominant force in the lives of girls coming of age in America today is social media. What it is doing to an entire generation of young women is the subject of award-winning Vanity Fair writer Nancy Jo Sales' riveting and explosive American Girls.  With extraordinary intimacy and precision, Sales captures what it feels like to be a girl in America today. From Montclair to Manhattan and Los Angeles, from Florida and Arizona to Texas and Kentucky, Sales crisscrossed the country, speaking to more than 200 girls, ages 13 to 19, and documenting a massive change in the way girls are growing up, a phenomenon that transcends race, geography, and household income. American Girls provides a disturbing portrait of the end of childhood as we know it and of the inexorable and ubiquitous experience of a new kind of adolescence - one dominated by new social and sexual norms, where a girl's first crushes and experiences of longing and romance occur in an accelerated electronic environment; where issues of identity and self-esteem are magnified and transformed by social platforms that provide instantaneous judgment.  What does it mean to be a girl in America in 2016? It means coming of age online in a hypersexualized culture that has normalized extreme behavior, from pornography to the casual exchange of nude photographs; a culture rife with a virulent new strain of sexism and a sometimes self-undermining notion of feminist empowerment; a culture in which teenagers are spending so much time on technology and social media that they are not developing basic communication skills. From beauty gurus to slut shaming to a disconcerting trend of exhibitionism, Nancy Jo Sales provides a shocking window into the troubling world of today's teenage girls.  Provocative and urgent, American Girls is destined to ignite a much-needed conversation about how we can help our daughters and sons negotiate unprecedented new challenges.  Casillero del Diablo Our Take: Dry, full-bodied, smooth, mature taste for a 2014. A light long finish.  Winemakers Notes Native of Cahors, France, this variety truly shines in Casillero del Diablo’s outstanding Malbec featuring concentrated sweet fruit and round tannins with aromas of blackberries and black plums with a touch of black pepper and vanilla, while flavors of spices and black plums meld perfectly on the palate. Tasting Notes ORIGIN Central valley VINTAGE 2014 SOIL Riverbench associated soils AGEING Aged in American oak barrels COLOR Intense and deep ruby red. AROMA Delicious aromas of black fruit such as berries, plums and cherries, followed by pepper and subtle touches of vanilla and black chocolate. All very well balanced. PALATE The beginning is marked by the dark plums and spices making this wine very generous in taste. The final structure is wide and round thanks to the presence of the barrels that has been excellently integrated. The after taste is long and elegant. FOOD PAIRING Harmonizes perfectly with all types of barbecues, ripe cheeses and sweet and sour sauces. Stews and herbs are another partner for this wine.

But back in those days, I didn't even really have—I didn't even have a pet! This was everything I did. This was my whole life, this passion to find out these things, and do these things, and see these things, and have these adventures and be able to report about this street life that rarely gets talked about.
