Here's the conclusion of our four-part dub series. Throughout the series we've tried to use a fairly loose interpretation of dub, without straying too far from its fundamentals. In Spring 2021, Seoul-based label Extra Noir will make Tengger’s first EP, Electric Earth Creation, available on vinyl for the first time. Previously limited to a small run of CDs sold only in Korea, this 5-song 2013 collection reveals the genesis of what would become Tengger’s signature sound: hypnotic synths, spectral vocals, rhythmic propulsion and nature motifs. Electric Earth Creation, however, presents a harder, less ethereal and more danceable version of the band. The EP was produced on Korea’s Jeju island, after the birth of Marqido (synthesizers and programming) and Itta’s (vocals) son Raai, and the dissolution of their previous musical project, 10. Conceived in response to the house-bound isolation of becoming new parents and the wild nature that surrounded them outside, the songs of Electric Earth Creation feel like rituals to summon and celebrate Earth’s primordial forces. Available on limited editions vinyl (300 copies). Pre-sales start Feb. 5. https://extranoir.bandcamp.com/music

An imaginary soundtrack for the greatest 60s Korean horror film never made: Mulgwishin. The plot: Ko Tae-Hyun is a farm boy with big city dreams. Despite an idyllic upbringing on the isle of Jeju, he leaves his family and beloved rural life behind at the age of 18, chasing fortune in Seoul. He soon learns that money doesn't come easy in the capital, however, and begins running small errands for a local gang to make ends meet. The head of the crime family, Mr. Kim, takes notice of Tae-Hyun's talent and dedication, and Tae-Hyun quickly ascends the ranks, fetching good money and the suits, girls and lifestyle that come with it. One girl is particularly compelling to Tae-Hyun: Mr. Kim's daughter, Su-Jin. Despite initial misgivings, Mr. Kim's fondness for Tae-Hyun allows him to see past the humble origins of his protégé, and soon he calls Tae-Hyun his son-in-law. The marriage between Tae-Hyun and Su-Jin starts blissfully, except for one thing: Tae-Hyun's frequent nightmares. After a particularly vivid one, he confesses to Su-Jin that he lives in constant fear of the "mulgwishin", or water ghost. He claims that he was haunted throughout his childhood in Jeju by visions of a drowned woman, returning to shore to seek revenge on those responsible for her death at sea. Su-Jin's comfort is a blessing for Tae-Hyun, but it's not enough to prevent him from straying into the arms of other women. With his status in the Kim dynasty and all the money that comes with it, Tae-Hyun becomes an unintentional playboy. When Su-Jin finds out, she puts the family's resources to her own use and begins staging elaborate hoaxes to terrorize Tae-Hyun with visions of the mulgwishin. After a particularly horrifying stunt, Tae-Hyun loses control, and in a panic attacks the ghostly image of the mulgwishin with a knife. Only after he successfully slays his tormentor does he realize that he has killed his wife. *The 1960s Korean horror film "Mulgwishin" does not exist anywhere other than your head*

The balance is a little tilted toward new music on this episode, with recent tracks from Sault, Stranded, Yetsuby, Michael C. Sharp and Ana da Silva and Phew. We didn't forget the old stuff, though, and there's even an 8-minute psych jam from Hawkwind. The first of our monthly shows for Internet Public Radio (https://www.internetpublicradio.live/), featuring tracks from Salamanda, Kuunatic, Stephen Mallinder, Kübler-Ross, Danielle Dax and more. From the moment Salamanda started releasing individual tracks on Bandcamp last year, they quickly became one of our favorite Korean acts. Through hypnotic live shows, DJ sets and a steady stream of excellent releases, Salamanda have established themselves as some of the most interesting and original electronic artists in Seoul right now. We are very excited to share this mix, Sand Cake, that they prepared exclusively for Extra Noir. https://8salamanda8.bandcamp.com/ https://soundcloud.com/yetsuby https://soundcloud.com/umantherma Don't miss their latest release, Glass Cage EP, available now through Bandcamp.
“Michael.J.Foks” is an old friend from Tokyo whom we hadn't seen in 15 years until our recent trip there to celebrate the release of Kuunatic's Kuurandia EP. He is a resident DJ at Shibuya's well-established clubs “OTO” and “Organ Bar", and also plays selections from his extensive and eclectic vinyl collection at live band events and hotel lounges. This mix is called "Spring to Spring", opening and closing with some seasonal lounge pop, and covering a lot of ground in between, including some oddball Latin selections, mysterious Asian pop and minimal electronics. https://www.mixcloud.com/Michael_J_Foks/ Art work by Yoshitsugu Oya https://www.instagram.com/yoshitsugu_oya/ https://www.instagram.com/oyanocollage/
Right now it's had to put anything into the world without it feeling like a statement about the COVID-19 situation. This episode isn't intended to be a statement of any kind, but at the same time, it felt flippant to just do a normal episode. So this one's a bit more sombre than usual, though we hope there's some enjoyment you can wring from it. Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/614250197234712576/extra-noir-episode-51-awful-grey-unavowable
We originally planned something a bit different for our 50th episode but the sudden and tragic death of Andrew Weatherall changed our minds. This isn't a full-episode tribute but we couldn't make a new episode without putting some tracks from The Guv on it. *MASSIVE LOVE AND RESPECT TO ANDREW WEATHERALL, 1963-2020* Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/190968174898/the-sabres-of-paradise-jacob-street-7am-two-lone
Naturally, the new year for Extra Noir brings in lots of old music. Actually, we do have one new track from the great new album "7" by Sault. Otherwise it's the standard blend of post-punk, coldwave and minimal synth from the early 80s onwards. This show features Caroline K, Thick Pigeon, Liquid Liquid, The Legendary Pink Dots, Neo Museum and more. We are super excited to announce our latest release, a vinyl edition of Tokyo psychedelic trio Kuunatic's dark and dreamy EP Kuurandia. We immediately fell in love with their singular blend of psych, dub and traditional influences, all topped off with a touch of horror movie soundtrack. A perfect fit for Extra Noir! Episode 46 delivers lots of darkness and a little bit of Wham! Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/185425641868/extra-noir-episode-46-the-sophist-eternal
We recorded a live, all-vinyl set at Senggi Studio in Seoul for Tengger's Spiritual release party on 14 April. Unfortunately the recording had some technical issues, and wasn't really suitable for use as an episode. We had a lot of the tracks on mp3 already, however, and ripped some other ones from vinyl. This is basically a reconstruction of the set - same playlist, same sequence. Let's call it a digital echo of an analog moment.
A taster of things past and things to come... Episode has some choice 80s Japanese minimal synth and no wave, some classic post-punk and a few selections from Korea's avant-electro future, including Tengger, Yetsuby and Chawood. Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/184058492573/extra-noir-episode-44-taurus-das-autonome
After years in the London entertainment industry, the solo artist known as Pecht adopted a cryptic new identity and recorded his debut LP in exile on the north coast of Scotland. Like a Lovecraftian mystery unfolding in a Soho nightclub, the album references giallo and horror soundtracks, retro synth sounds and the hauntological explorations of Ghost Box Records. An ideal piece of arcana for Extra Noir's cabinet of curios. Available here: https://pecht.bandcamp.com/album/pecht-2
The latest release from Extra Noir. An invisible, candy-flavored contagion, Yetsuby's music will burrow deep into your brain, lingering like a benevolent invader. Combining a surreal sensibility with perfect pop hooks, and reflecting Seoul's nocturnal futurism, Heptaprism marks the full-length debut of Yetsuby, one of South Korea's most unorthodox electronic artists. https://yetsuby.bandcamp.com/album/heptaprism
Lots of new stuff on this episode including tracks from Korean musicians Yetsuby and Mogwaa. You'll also find some 80s DIY electronics, a (very) brief pop interlude and some info on our latest label releases. Our December episode has a slightly accidental preponderance of music from 1980s Japan, including tracks from Mariah, Morio Agata and Richochet. In between you'll find music at least one Korean selection, some German synthpop, a Eurythmics cover and something related to Throbbing Gristle. Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/181314342843/extra-noir-episode-41-itta-%E1%84%86%E1%85%B5%E1%84%8C%E1%85%B5%E1%84%8B%E1%85%B4-%E1%84%89%E1%85%A6%E1%84%80%E1%85%A8-north
We'll be taking a break from new episodes for a while, so here's a little bonus in the meantime. One of the secret influences on Extra Noir has always been the electro, hip hop, breakbeat and freestyle music from 80s and early 90s Miami. Here's a little selection of our favorite tracks. Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/177404077243/extra-miami-maggotron-computer-funk-pretty
Last podcast for a while... We need some time off to relocate to Seoul. So in the meantime enjoy some assorted 80s strangeness from Chen Yi, Sally Patience and Diseño Corbusier, and some newer synthy selections from Jo Johson, Punctum, F Ingers and Forests. Extra Ballroom - Part 1 by Extra Noir
Back to normal programming with our first episode since the launch of Extra Noir Vol. 1. We start dark and finish a little more cheerfully, with a cut from the new Blood Wine or Honey album kicking things off, and Nu Guinea taking us home. A special episode focused on music from the San Francisco Bay Area, 1978-1988. Inspired by the "Let Them Eat Jellybeans" compilation released by Alternative Tentacles in 1981, it showcases the more electronic and avant-garde end of the punk spectrum. Featuring tracks from The Units, Monte Cazazza, Minimal Man, Chrome, Voice Farm, Tuxedomoon, Noh Mercy and more. Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/172913034433/extra-noir-california-babylon-intro-chrome
Radioolio is one of many musical aliases of Graeme Ross, a visual artist, DJ and musician based in London. A one-time regular at Cafe OTO and on Hoxton.fm, his latest project, SOUNDTRAITS, combines visual and sonic media, using the sounds made during the production of a pen and ink portrait to trigger responsive radio signals. We knew that asking Graeme for a guest mix would deliver a good result. Enjoy! https://soundtraits.co.uk/ https://www.mixcloud.com/radioolio/ http://www.grohs.co.uk/
The second half of Episode 33 delivers a special guest mix from Seonggu de Kim. Seonggu is a member of ambient synth duo Airy Textile and DJ at Vent nightclub in Daejeon, South Korea. Airy Textile's track Onijuh_10 is one of the signature contributions to Extra Noir Vol. 1. Back to basics with some 80s European synth jams, nestling cosily with American no wave and Japanese post-punk. The pleasure of writing sentences like that is why we made this show. Expect tracks from Naum Gabo, Factrix, Jill Krosen, Sequencer People, Carl Matthews, The PTA's, Ike Yard and more. Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/169880508273/extra-noir-episode-32-carl-matthews-untitled
Going for more of an 80s psychedelia theme with this episode, though there's plenty of good contemporary stuff, including some choice tracks from Korean artists HWI, Xiami and THSS. We can't get enough of Glasgow psychelicists Happy Meals, who close tonight's episode with a killer from their Full Ashram Devotional Ceremony on Optimo's So Low imprint. Given that almost any random Extra Noir episode could double as a Halloween special, we decided to eschew the John Carpenter, horror disco and synth arpeggios for something a bit different. Enjoy!
Another silky blend of bleeding edge and vintage. In this episode we serve up some new tracks from Susana, Circa Tapes and Total Leatherette, with dusty analog electronics handled by Los Microwaves, Faction, Adinda and Robert, Der Plan and various other ghosts of the 1980s. Tracklist here: https://extranoir.tumblr.com/post/166212605528/extra-noir-episode-29-lou-miami-dance-with
We're finally back after a long break. We collected some good tunes in our absence, including a couple of new, unreleased tracks by Kübler-Ross and Aadm Our Hatley. We've also got selections from the new Tengger and Cru Servers albums . But for all this newness, fear not, as the 80s synth stuff still keeps coming - this episode's treats include tracks from Michal Turtle, Bill Nelson and Dark Day. We're finally back! It's been a long break, so long that there have been 12 episodes of Twin Peaks: The Return since our last episode was launched to whet your appetite for the show. For this edition, we pay a small tribute to our friends from Optimo to celebrate their 20th birthday, with a few Optimo-related goodies. We've also got selections from Chino Amobi, Laidback, Ted Milton and the ultimate Northern California seaside anthem. Extra Noir is 25 episodes old! Thanks to our small but growing crew of listeners for your support and attention so far. Your reward is some dub/post-punk hybrid tracks from the 1980s, a little bit of electro funk and a couple of newer tracks from contemporary artists like Poland's Robert Piernikoski and Pecht, from the Scottish Highlands. England’s Hidden Reverse: A Secret History of the Esoteric Underground was originally published in 2003 and quickly went out of print, an annoying but appropriate reflection of its subject matter. The most comprehensive account to date of first-generation British industrial music, the book has recently been given new life by Strange Attractor Press. To mark the publication of this updated edition, we’ve put together a special episode featuring the music of Throbbing Gristle, Coil, Current 93 and Nurse With Wound. Numerous characters from England’s Hidden Reverse also appear, including David Keenan himself, Cosey Fanni Tutti, Genesis P-Orridge, David Tibet, Jhonn Balance, Peter Christopherson, Steven Stapleton, Thomas Ligotti, Danielle Dax, Clive Barker, Derek Jarman and William S. Burroughs, along with a cast of confused and indignant inquisitors… http://strangeattractor.co.uk/shoppe/englands-hidden-reverse/

He reveals some occult secrets about his new record California Chrome and finally puts an end to the rampant speculation about his top 10 horror films. In addition to selections from that LP, we have tracks from Umberto, White Stains, Zombi and others equally unholy.
