Chris had to go to space again this week. This time, he takes us to a galaxy kinda far away and sort of a while ago (or maybe now? or in the future?) because our Patron Miles requested Black Moon Rising for his Patron's Choice this year. Miles wrote to us saying, "Since I requested two books in a row that were both deeply political, I figured I'd instead give you guys something lighter: published Star Wars fanfiction. The book I'm referring to is Black Moon Rising by Frankie Rose and Callie Hart...to give you an idea of how egregious it is, it starts with a prologue that feels designed to be turned into a Star Wars text crawl. It then jumps directly to [the protagonist] who[se] name is literally Reyza, having a graphic sex dream involving the main antagonist, Jass Baylar." We hope you enjoy the episode, Miles! Thank you for your support for TBC throughout the vast spacetime continuum. Remember that if you, too, would like to have us read and review a book of your choice on the show, you can gain that power by joining our Patreon at the appropriate tier. Today's episode includes our usual barnyard language plus some sexual content, Star Wars violence, and weaponry. Links & References: Other commentary on this book: Jenny Nicholson: This is DEFINITELY not a published Reylo fanfic novel

We've been trying to get Mahmood Saikh on the show almost since the podcast started. And finally, he has relented, but with the caveat that he be allowed to appear not as a traditional guest —oh, no, no!— he wanted to be treated as “just one of the guys”. A panel position, if you will. Fine. We accept you. One of us. The indie-rock booking-agent maestro DID send us a bio, however — so here it is: “Mahmood Shaikh is an agent at Concerted Efforts. He represents a wide range of artists including Algiers, Boris, Frankie Rose, Jawbox, Karate, Mr Twin Sister, Nothing, SURVIVE, Ted Leo, We Were Promised Jetpacks, and many others in North America and other territories.  Previously, he was an agent at Flowerbooking, Inc. where for over a decade he sat next to the guy that booked Local H.    Last name is pronounced “Shake”.” Anyway, on this episode we talk about Mahmood's love of the Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Scott's Global Entry worthiness, 1982, Michael, Commie Liberal Pinko Tuesday, upside down pizza, U2 cover bands, Gabe's fever for Pac-Man, and finally — COVERBOY: Chicago's newest super-group. This is Ben's kind of episode. Gooble gobble.

The bands talked about the challenges of being an artist these days, from the difficulties of making money in the streaming economy, to having to brand yourself and the tribulations of being on the road. Host Aviva Lessard also touched base with the festival organizer, Mothland, who also manages artists, runs a label, and promotes live shows. i’m realizing that while i mentioned indiepop and hardcore (again, i know hardcore is an apex genre with lots of nuance that i don’t know much about) last week as feeling siloed in some ways, i think it’s so interesting that they both specifically overlap quite a bit. maybe more than other seemingly siloed genres within diy? like, in oxnard some years ago there was crossover between yay records pop and local hardcore (nardcore). maybe it was just the folks that i was around, but there was totally overlap. and then up north in san jose there seemed to be a lot of crossover in spaces like think and die thinking, which was a pretty mixed fest. this is california centric cause that’s where i am but i imagine this happens elsewhere? i have friends that crossover in the pacific northwest too so i assume it does. also, was it like that in the 90s as well? is it like that internationally?the first radio show i did in 2005 was with my friend cole and it was called “cuddle and core” and it was basically a hardcore/twee combo show. and it worked pretty well. people appreciate a dichotomy. they compliment each other. makes sense.DOWNLOAD RECORDINGsubscribe to the podcast here: http://feeds.feedburner.com/5432fun00:00 (intro by omar)00:20 R.M.F.C. “The Clue” Hive Vol. 202:00 Frankie Rose “Play For Today” Seventeen Seconds05:38 Gomme “Floss” Absent Healing09:00 CORNERS “Damages” The Floor12:35 Not For You “It Can’t See” Drown15:28 Lily & Horn Horse “Tree” 4 partners road16:50 Banny Grove “So Happy So Good” 4 partners road20:44 Verdigrls “Women In Fiction” Small Moves EP25:58 Village Of Spaces “Wood Workers Litany” Shaped By Place28:41 tender perennial “appetency” short songs about longing31:09 Zula “Going Into Work” Stepping EP34:16 Dumb “Submission” Club Nites36:41 VIRVON VARVON “ALLERGIES” MIND CANCER39:31 Sweet Lil “Dust” Slow Moving44:14 Judy and the Jerks “Butter” Music for Donuts45:58 Fred Beans “Leo” The Peanut Butter & Jelly Dogs48:07 Coughy “V” Ocean Hug48:59 Good Morning “People Say” The Option50:47 Martha “Wrestlmania VIII” Love Keeps Kicking52:33 Frank Hurricane and Hurricanes of Love “Life is Spiritual” Life is Spiritual

Episode 154 of Look At My Records features an interview with Brooklyn musician Drew Citron! For this episode, Deanna Dilandro joins Tom as co-host for an extensive chat with Drew on the heels of the release of her debut solo effort, Free Now. Over the last decade and change, Drew has remained a constant force in the New York City music scene, fronting the critically acclaimed Beverly, playing bass in the post-punk quartet Public Practice, and as a touring member of both The Pains of Being Pure At Heart and Frankie Rose & The Outs. On Free Now, Citron begins a new chapter in her musical story, as she turns the page on Beverly and plots a new course forward by experimenting with a more intimate, folk-pop inspired sound. During our interview, we chatted about her formative musical experiences in both her hometown of San Francisco and her adopted home of New York City, what it was like writing Free Now on the Northern Coast of California, how she adapted to life under quarantine, and a whole lot more.Free Now is available on limited edition vinyl via Park The Van. You can purchase a copy on Bandcamp. You can also stream the record on your platform of choice. Keep up with Drew by following her on Instagram and liking her on Facebook.

We had the pleasure of interviewing Drew Citron over Zoom video!Brooklyn indie-rock stalwart Drew Citron formed Beverly in 2013, after having got her start as a touring member with Frankie Rose and The Pains of Being Pure of Heart. Over the course of Beverly’s two LPs, released on Kanine Records, Citron toured the world with big acts (The Drums, We Are Scientists). She and Beverly drummer, Scott Rosenthal (Class Actress, The Beets), would go on to open storied Bushwick music-venue, Alphaville, and more recently embark on the highly regarded post-punk outfit, Public Practice. In all these collaborative endeavors, Citron has been developing, refining, and ultimately giving life to what is her latest project, Free Now, due out Summer of 2020 on Park The Van.“Growing up in San Francisco, I used to take so many long melancholic walks listening to The Smiths on my Discman. And those walks now strike me as a kind of prelude to the feeling I’m getting at with this album,” says Citron. “Most of the songs were written in Northern California, camped out on the coast recalling much of how it felt to be an adolescent of sixteen, in love with a record.”Citron, after the break up of Beverly and the end of her long-term relationship with Rosenthal, writes a lot about heartbreak on Free Now. But at thirty-four, she’s also arrived at the height of her performing/writing/producing abilities. “I am finally unafraid to get up on stage and be the front-person, to write all my own material, to get behind a mixing board and turn the knobs and produce my own songs,” she says. “And it took time to get here. It takes time.”In the recording, Citron recruited an extremely talented pool of musicians, recording with Sam Owens (aka Sam Evian) at Flying Cloud, Tim Wheeler (of Ash) at Atomic Heart, John Agnello (engineer: Dinosaur Jr., Sonic Youth, Kurt Vile) at Water Music, and Danny Taylor at Transmitter Park Studio. The song arrangements were worked out on stage night after night with Citron’s backing band, comprised of Nico Hedley and Laura Catalano, so that when Citron went into the studio, the songs were, as they say, ready to go.With Free Now, Citron, one of the most beautiful voices in Indie Rock, comes to the table with a whole lot of pain to sing about and the full musical knowledge to put herself, and her talents, front, and center. We want to hear from you! When Frankie Rose began work on Cage Tropical, she was living in Los Angeles, employed as a caterer — the struggling actor, Party Down kind. Not exactly the triumphant rock start victory lap of the artist who released one of of the best LPs of the best half-decade. But, then, these things rarely work out as planned. But the former Vivian Girls/Dum Dum Girls/Crystal Stilts managed to pull things together. Her new record ranks among her best, a testament to putting one’s head down and focusing on art in the face of uncertainty. It’s big and sprawling and personal, all at once, juxtaposing the her ups and downs, as exemplified on the second single, Red Museum, an existential sort of love song. Rose sat down in the lead up to Cage Tropical’s release to discuss the journey that led to the new LP and how she’s since resigned herself to the fate of being a musician for as long as she can sing into a microphone.

This week's episode of Snacky Tunes features an interview with Michael Stolfe of Connie's Pizza in Chicago, as well as a live in-studio performance by Psymon Spine. Connie's Pizza is Chicago's best kept secret for delicious Italian dishes and of course, pizza. Much has happened since founder Jim Stolfe traded his prized 1962 Oldsmobile Starfire to open the first Connie’s in a small storefront on the south side of Chicago. They have opened new restaurants and expanded into frozen foods nationwide. There are some things, however, that have not changed. They are still family owned, and still obsessed with quality and service. Dropping their self-titled debut EP on May 19 via Axis Mundi Records, Psymon Spine’s vibe is a hodgepodge of sonic styles: opener “Experience Machine” is a jubilant, guitar-driven romp with lush harmonies and an aggressively good-times agenda. “Eric’s Basement & Secret Tunnels,” meanwhile, blends strobing digital effects with sweet, acoustic folk-pop and an echoing, Books-ish sample, and “Gears” quietly slips in with gentle, dissonant string-work. None of these textures ought to fit together, but Psymon Spine have a knack for fitting square pegs in round holes. This episode features live in-studio performances of "Frankie Rose" and "Wallpaper."

This week on Snacky Tunes DJ Never Forget speaks to food guest Reverend David Ciancio about his “Burger Conquest” blog. Learn how David started a number of private eating and rating clubs, and then turned his efforts into the Burger Conquest burger blog. Then music guests Frankie Rose and The Outs play a rare 2-piece acoustic set live in-studio, and describe their mixed feelings on CMJ and what they like to eat on the road.
