This week on the Exciting & New podcast Jason, Andy and Dana welcome Becky (back) and Nate (first timer) to the podcast as they all discuss 1985 comedy The Breakfast Club. In this Brat Pack must-see, everyone that graduated college in St Elmo's Fire is back playing high school students in this one. We do a deep dive into the problems of kids in the 80s, like parental pressure, parental abuse, suicide, and cutting school to go shopping. The is an al time great, and we really had a blast getting a young person's perspective, as well as a bunch of old-heads takes on what it was really like going to school in the 80s. This was a great movie to discuss and we had fun doing so. Enjoy the podcast!As promised, here are the parts that were supposedly cut:-Carl predicts where the five kids will be in thirty years: Bender will have killed himself; Claire will have had "two boob jobs and a face lift"; Brian will have become very successful but die of a heart attack due to the stress of the high paying job; Allison will be a great poet, but no one will care; and Andrew will marry a gorgeous airline stewardess who will become fat after having kids.-In a dream sequence Allison imagines Andrew as a gluttonous Viking, Bender as a prisoner, Claire as a bride, Brian as an astronaut and herself as a vampire. In an unfilmed alternative to this dream sequence all the five kids imagine random things including cars, naked women, Godzilla, beer and fighter planes, and these things end up filling the room until Vernon interrupts.-John Bender was not going to walk to school in the original script. He was going to be driven by his dad in a rusty tow truck, and have a brief fight with him before his dad drives off. Bender was also tossed a bagged lunch, with his father saying "You are a waste of lunch meat!"-After Bender demonstrates "Life at Big Bri's house" Brian stops Bender, and corrects him with a much more pessimistic version of the skit. Claire then proceeds to act out her life before asking Bender to demonstrate his version. Bender's routine changes as well here. After Bender mimics his mom, he stops, commenting that "then they make me work to pay off the dentist for the teeth he busts."-The scene where Andrew and Allison are walking to get the sodas is extended to a point, where Allison pulls out a pack of cigarettes, and smokes one.-After getting the sodas, Bender shakes his can violently and places it among the five to see who gets the rigged one. Allison ends up getting it, and when she opens the can, all the soda squirts directly into her mouth.-After Vernon asks who has to use the lavatory, the five go to the bathroom. Vernon gives the boys two minutes, and the girls three minutes. Claire catches Allison in a stall eating a bag of chips, repulsing her. Bender mocks Brian for sitting down to pee instead of using a urinal.-When the group is sitting in the circle and Allison mentions that she can write (and do other things) with her toes, she was going to follow up with an actual demonstration.-Several staff members were cut out of the script before filming: Dr. Lange (Social Studies teacher who dresses oddly), and Robin (gym teacher). Robin helps Vernon on a few workout machines until Vernon injures his back, and she eventually visits the students while they are in their circle in the library. Robin initially replaced many of Carl's scenes, and Carl was originally set to be a minor character with only two scenes.-During a cast reunion in honor of the film's 25th anniversary, Ally Sheedy revealed that a Director's Cut existed, but Hughes' widow did not disclose any details concerning its whereabouts.

Fashion and language were different. Technology was quite different. We didn't have the internet, and cable television was just becoming widespread. Pubic hair was uncut & often not trimmed.. The only sexual fear for straight people was getting pregnant; and the pill mostly took care of that.I was a senior and I needed both a literature class and social science class to complete my general education requirements to graduate. Because of my class standing, I was finally going to be able to register early in the cycle. I filled out several possible registration cards, and waited dutifully in the line. When I got to the registration window, I was pleasantly surprised to find that S O C 3 69 Human Sexuality was still open. I registered for the class and hoped it was everything the rumors made it out to be.As the Spring Semester started, I tried to find out if I knew anyone in S O C 3 69. None of my engineering classmates were interested. And I was disappointed to find that none of my female friends had registered for it either. It had the potential to be less than fun. But I remembered the stories about the course lots of discussion of sex, sex, and sex. It couldn't be that bad.The class was scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The first class was on a Thursday and I arrived ten minutes early for the first class. The room was already packed. On the front desk were two piles of papers with a sign that said, "Take one of each." One was the syllabus and the other was a list of assignments with details and due dates.Thursday Pre-ClassI looked around the packed room and saw a seat next to a pretty blonde. "Is this seat taken?""It looks like it's perfect for you." She chuckled.I held out my hand, "Hi, I'm Dan."She smiled sweetly, "I'm Hannah."A woman in her forties entered the room and began walking around talking to students. I assumed this was the famous Dr. Miller. She was tall and thin with a nice figure. She was professionally dressed in a skirt, blouse, and blazer. This may be uncomfortable for some of you. As a class, we can overcome this discomfort by keeping our minds open, being respectful of each other, and sharing our thoughts. Given the number of smiles, that sounds like what a lot of you signed up for."I expect everyone to act as an adult. I don't want to hear titters and I don't want to hear anyone shaming anyone else. Respect is our watch word. If you cannot act as a mature adult and show respect to everyone in the room, then I will ask you to leave. Finally, we can take advantage of a new way to unlock answers from a database. A typical relational database looks at information in tables. This can be fantastic for many actions, which is why it became popular. However, drilling down into information can involve re-indexing and hopping around tables. Graphing technology looks at the data and tries to find relationships. As consumers, we know if we purchase an expensive couch with a credit card, the credit card company may email and question if that is a valid purchase. Well, multiply that by hundreds of thousands of users and millions of data points. It is not just a couch; it may be automated financial transactions that involve fraud. Attend the Neo4j Graph Summit Government event on October 9th at the Spy Museum in Washington, D.C. For a human to sit down with some tables of data would make the process so time-consuming, that millions could be stolen before the culprit was discovered. Fashion and language were different. Technology was quite different. We didn’t have the internet, and cable television was just becoming widespread. Pubic hair was uncut & often not trimmed.. The only sexual fear for straight people was getting pregnant; and the pill mostly took care of that.I was a senior and I needed both a literature class and social science class to complete my general education requirements to graduate. Because of my class standing, I was finally going to be able to register early in the cycle. I filled out several possible registration cards, and waited dutifully in the line. When I got to the registration window, I was pleasantly surprised to find that S O C 3 69 Human Sexuality was still open. I registered for the class and hoped it was everything the rumors made it out to be.As the Spring Semester started, I tried to find out if I knew anyone in S O C 3 69. None of my engineering classmates were interested. And I was disappointed to find that none of my female friends had registered for it either. It had the potential to be less than fun. But I remembered the stories about the course lots of discussion of sex, sex, and sex. It couldn’t be that bad.The class was scheduled for Tuesday and Thursday afternoons. The first class was on a Thursday and I arrived ten minutes early for the first class. The room was already packed. On the front desk were two piles of papers with a sign that said, “Take one of each.” One was the syllabus and the other was a list of assignments with details and due dates.Thursday Pre-ClassI looked around the packed room and saw a seat next to a pretty blonde. “Is this seat taken?”“It looks like it’s perfect for you.” She chuckled.I held out my hand, “Hi, I’m Dan.”She smiled sweetly, “I’m Hannah.”A woman in her forties entered the room and began walking around talking to students. I assumed this was the famous Dr. Miller. She was tall and thin with a nice figure. She was professionally dressed in a skirt, blouse, and blazer. The skirt came to just above the knee and showed some shapely, bare legs. She started working the room.When she got to us, she said, “Hannah, good to see you again. Did you have a good winter break?”“I did Dr. Miller.”Dr. Miller turned to me and extended her hand, “A new person in my class.”I stuck out my hand, “Pleased to meet you Dr. Miller. Dan McDevitt.”“A senior. Mechanical engineering major. Wow! I’m impressed.” She chuckled at herself, “I try to learn about my students beforehand. It isn’t hard if you actually care about people.” She looked at her watch, “Show time.”Dr. Miller walked to the front of the room, “Let’s get started. My name is Dr. Shannon Miller. This class is S O C 3 69, Human Sexuality. If you aren’t registered, you will have to leave. No auditing.”Two guys got up and headed toward the door.She continued, “It isn’t that I want to be a hard ass, but if I didn’t have that limitation, this place would be standing room only. If you are curious how the course was numbered, I asked for it and there was no objection until I was teaching it for three semesters. By then it was too late to change it.”There were some scattered laughs and giggles.“We’ll skip the usual introductions. I think I know everyone. If you don’t know your classmates, I think you will quickly learn about them.”Lecture Begins“As the title suggests, this is a course in human sexuality. I must tell you that this class will get very graphic at times. We will examine the wide range of human sexual activity, from straight sex to some of the kinkiest stuff you can imagine. This may be uncomfortable for some of you. As a class, we can overcome this discomfort by keeping our minds open, being respectful of each other, and sharing our thoughts. Given the number of smiles, that sounds like what a lot of you signed up for."I expect everyone to act as an adult. I don’t want to hear titters and I don’t want to hear anyone shaming anyone else. Respect is our watch word. If you cannot act as a mature adult and show respect to everyone in the room, then I will ask you to leave. If you do not voluntarily leave, I will have campus security remove you. I don’t fuck around with any of that. And yes, I have a potty mouth. I want everyone to feel safe here. This class is like Las Vegas. If someone shares some intimate part of their life, I expect it to stay in this room. Am I clear?Dr. Miller looked each of us in the eye, "Good. That would be unethical and for many people, immortal. I will provide alternative assignments that you are free to undertake. In the assignment sheet I provide details on how you can fulfill both regular and alternative assignments. For example, after today’s class, you may decide to experiment with self-love. The Bender family, AKA The Bloody Benders, were a family of serial killers who lived and operated in Labette County, Kansas from May 1871 to December 1872. The family consisted of John Bender, Elvira (John's wife), their son, John Jr., and their daughter, Kate. Based on estimates, the Bender family killed at least a dozen travelers before their crimes were ever discovered. The fate of the family remains unknown to this day. But facing a crackdown on fishing by regulators, the city is starting to look at another source of revenue – offshore wind. We take a look inside the hidden, often lucrative world of Vermont sheriffs, and mourn (or celebrate??) the end of L.L. Bean's lifetime return policy. Plus: responding to racism on campus through art, and Palestinian storytellers in Boston. A man looks at a harpoon display at the New Bedford Whaling Museum (John Bender/RIPR) Keeping Tabs on the Sheriff When Attorney General Jeff Sessions at a speech to the National Sheriffs Association said “The office of sheriff is a critical part of the Anglo-American heritage of law enforcement,” he prompted many shocked observers to wonder where that leaves people of color within that heritage. It's also thrown a pretty harsh spotlight on the job of sheriff. But do you even know who your sheriff is? In 2006, an anonymous whistleblower tipped the Vermont state auditor off to financial misdeeds in the Windham County Sheriff’s Department, which was led by Sheila Prue. If you live in Connecticut, that’s a trick question! County government is nonexistent in the Nutmeg State — that’s why there are no sheriffs — but it’s not very strong in other New England states either. While Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, and Massachusetts have elected sheriffs, their elections don’t get much attention. That lead a listener to the Vermont Public Radio podcast Brave Little State to ask: if voters aren't holding these elected officials accountable, then who is? VPR investigative reporter Emily Corwin dug in and joins us to share some surprising tales of sheriffs going bad — and virtually getting away with it. So, did that dog bed you purchased from LL Bean five years ago get chewed by its occupant? Up until last week, you could just take it back and get a replacement for no charge. But the iconic Maine company is changing its famous unconditional return policy — one that has been a part of the brand since it started more than a century ago. The headline: “A Famed Fishing Port Shudders as Its Codfather Goes to Jail.” Back in October, fishing magnate Carlos Rafael, also known as “the Codfather,” was sentenced to 46 months in federal prison for mislabeling his catch and money-laundering. But with Rafael behind bars, the men who worked for him are barred from catching groundfish with his boats. Some of Rafael's boats and permits have even been seized by regulators. And as the Times reports, the ripple effects can be felt across the usually bustling port of New Bedford, which has gone eerily quiet. Visitors listen to Moby Dick read aloud, during the annual Moby Dick Marathon at the New Bedford Whaling Museum. (John Bender/RIPR) Yet while the fishing sector sits in limbo, another industry is just gearing up off Massachusetts' South Shore — offshore wind. Right now, the Commonwealth is developing what could be the nation's first large-scale offshore wind project, and New Bedford wants to be a big part of it. Rhode Island Public Radio's environmental reporter Avory Brookins takes a look at that city's bet on offshore wind energy. In the mid 19th Century, New Bedford was one of the world’s whaling capitals. The whaling industry is long gone, but New Bedford is drawing in fans of the world most famous leviathan. (Jill Kaufman) NEPR An art professor recently spent four days painting a six-foot-tall portrait of Trayvon Martin, while spectators came and went. The performance took place at Westfield State University, near Springfield, Massachusetts, where last semester there were numerous reports of racist messages left around campus. Photo by Annie Sinsabaugh When we hear about Palestinians in the news, it's usually in the context of conflicts or negotiations with Israel. With their stories being so highly politicized, the personal narratives of Palestinians don't often make it to American ears. Nadia Abuelezam, a Palestinian-American living in the Boston area, wants to change that. In 2015, she launched an event series called Palestinians, Live! featuring true stories told on stage. The stories are later released on Palestinians Podcast, which Nadia also created. Reporter Annie Sinsabaugh went to a recent Palestinians, Live! event at the Oberon Theater in Cambridge, Massachusetts, where she found not only entertainment but a community.
