“I wonder how many modern bands still do it?”   Maybe the song is named after the band and referenced in the chorus. Maybe the song is named after the band but there's no reference to the band's name anywhere in the lyrics. Or maybe it's a song with a completely different title than the band name BUT the band name IS mentioned somewhere in the lyrics.    “They mostly do it during their early years…”   Whatever the case may be, A METAL BAND'S TITLE TRACK ultimately becomes the cornerstone of a band's sound and their overall mission statement and objective (especially when they're young and just starting out).   “Taylor Swift doesn't have a song called ‘Taylor Swift'…and The Beatles don't have a song called ‘The Beatles'…”   Whether it's about building a mood, declaring some philosophical ethos, or making a proud, self-referential namecheck for fans to latch on and lock in to, A METAL BAND'S TITLE TRACK sets the tone and lets the listener know what can be expected whenever they hear it. Discover what it means to be a “hill jack”, understand why the good people of “Missourah” enjoy sipping on “Kentuckah” bourbon while floating down the “Mississippah” river, and find out how “Three Dudes…” are about to fundamentally transform metal award shows forever when you JOIN US as we investigate the importance of A METAL BAND'S TITLE TRACK. Tim Blake in conversation with David Eastaugh  http://moonweed.free.fr/ English keyboardist, vocalist, and composer, who is known for working with Gong, Hawkwind and his synthesizer and light performances as Crystal Machine, with the French Light artist Patrice Warrener. Blake met Daevid Allen at Marquee Studios, where the latter was recording his first solo album Banana Moon in 1971. At the end of the sessions, Allen had invited Blake to be Gong's sound mixer, but Blake preferred to work on his own music. He eventually joined Gong full-time in September 1972 as the band's synthesizer player, being among the first to bring the synthesizer out of the studio and on to the stage. He appears on all three albums of the Radio Gnome Invisible trilogy; Flying Teapot, Angel's Egg, and You, in fact Blake is the only composer, apart from the Allen/Smyth partnership, to have written for all three of the "Trilogy" Albums, making him one of Gong's most important composers. He left Gong in early 1975.

The Strange Brew - artist stories behind the greatest music ever recorded

Few works of musical theatre receive the recognition they deserve, and The Kibbo Kift is a prime example. Written by Judge Smith, co-founder of Van der Graaf Generator, and composer Maxwell Hutchinson, this ambitious rock musical told the stranger-than-fiction story of a breakaway anti-war scouting movement in 1920 that transformed, over two turbulent decades, from idealistic woodland campers into uniformed street-fighters for an alternative economic theory. It played Edinburgh’s Traverse Theatre and reached Sheffield’s Crucible in 1977 under director Mel Smith, then slipped into the margins of rock history. The recordings had a precarious existence. Union rules blocked a proper studio cast album, leaving only a patchwork of demo tapes and studio cuts. For decades these circulated in rough form, hardly doing justice to the material. Now, thanks to Think Like a Key, who tracked down, restored and remastered all surviving recordings,The Kibbo Kift can finally be heard as it deserves. In this interview, Judge Smith talks about the history of this remarkable lost musical, and why its strange subject matter resonates today. Jason Collins/Umbrellabird in conversation with David Eastaugh https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5uCjjeIi68 The Roots of the Seers lie in two places; Bristol (obviously) and Billericay (not so obviously). Leigh Wildman grew up in Billericay and it was there he met Jason Collins, a guitarist from nearby Brentwood. They had spent some time in bands around the Essex region and they, along with a few friends, had decided to up sticks and try somewhere else. At the suggestion of one of their number, Bristol was decided upon, and a mini Essex invasion took place in the summer of 1984. Adrian Blackmore, or Age, as he was known, had been in the second wave of Bristol's punk scene, too young to be in bands like the Cortinas, but old enough to be won over by punk's energy. He picked up the drums quickly and formed Lunatic Fringe with fellow Bristol Punk stalwarts Bear Hackenbush and John Finch. The Bristol punk scene in 1984 was a more cider fuelled version of what Crass was peddling, with a very much Do it yourself vibe. Bands squatted venues like the old Beetle Centre on Stokes Croft and encouraged the squatting of disused houses, which many lived in. It was in one of these squatted houses, Turdy Way, named for the amount of dog shit in the house when it was first squatted, that the Essex invasion landed. After a single and some tracks on a few compilation albums, Age had left Lunatic Fringe (very amicably) and started jamming with Leigh and another of the Essex invasion, Marc Hymas, in a loose knit band called Death Machine. Influenced by T-Rex and Hawkwind, they played a few gigs at the Demolition Ballroom (the name given to the squatted Beetle Centre). After a while, Marc decided he wanted to do something else and played Saxophone with Pigbag sound-a-likes Animal Magic. Leigh and Age decided they liked playing together and enlisted Jason on bass guitar and vocals. Getting more focused, and deciding to add some shared influences in the form of 60's Garage bands they enrolled a singer, Dean Strange, with Jason providing backing vocals.

We have a fun, sprawling chat about all things Hawkwind in the 90's and each select our favourite ‘orphan tracks' from the decade: those songs (or versions of songs) that didn't make it onto a studio album. We then get deep in the most excellent things Ian has been up to since last we spoke, including his writing for the Hawkwind edition of Record Collector last year, and his help with the marvellous book by Marion Lloyd-Langton about Huw's life, and her life with him. We heartily recommend seeking that one out.We also unveiled the lucky winner of the competition set on the last episode, and if that's you then expect to hear from us very soon! And the concept-album form is a logical extension of that storytelling impulse, often writ large. It allows the writer to tackle bigger themes, more involved story lines, more finely textured characters and ideas. In the pages of What's the Big Idea? (Hozac, 2025), author Bill Kopp explores 30 remarkable concept albums, drawing on new, firsthand interviews with the artists behind their creation. As long as there has been music, the form has been used as a vehicle for storytelling. Artists who have something to say often find that putting it into music is the ideal means of communicating thoughts and feelings to others. Author of the critically acclaimed Disturbing the Peace, Kopp turns us down the darkest road of musical blind-spots yet, the concept album, a previously shunned genre, now worthy of your curiosity. And then you hear something like Ogden's Nut Gone Flake, and The Turtles Present Battle of the Bands, or S.F. Sorrow, and you're really second-guessing yourself now, right? In 1968, a group of Luton apprentices started creating a rock opera. Chris Stokes and his band Genesis (not that Genesis) conceived a concept album with baroque piano arrangements and experimental passages, then packed it away and got on with their day jobs. For over 50 years, this album and other material spanning a decade, existed only on deteriorating tape and acetates. Chris recorded with various lineups from the mid-1960s including The Mantis Set, Genesis, and Sunday Painter, mostly at home on a Revox tape machine; self-financed, largely improvised, never properly released. Then Dimorphodons from Hand of Glory Records bought a battered Hohner keyboard on eBay for £10, heard a sample track, and discovered a treasure trove of lost British psychedelia. Chris and Dimorphodons share highlights from this incredible archive, with the bulk of these tracks heard in public for the first time. Motörhead - Ace of Spades: The Bar Band That Redefined Metal (Whether They Liked It Or Not)What happens when you salvage a beaten‑up classic from the graveyard? You discover why Motörhead's Ace of Spades remains one of the most influential rock albums of all time—even if Lemmy himself refused to call it metal.Recorded in six weeks during the summer of 1980 and unleashed that October, Ace of Spades is 36 minutes of raw, boogie‑infused rock and roll cranked up to 11. On this episode of Dig Me Out: 80s Metal, hosts Jason Ziad, Tim Minneci, and Chip Midnight resurrect this second‑chance poll winner to explore why this album sounds like nothing else—and why that matters. The classic lineup of Lemmy Kilmister, “Fast” Eddie Clarke, and Phil “Philthy Animal” Taylor weren't trying to invent metal. They were channeling Chuck Berry, ZZ Top, and Thin Lizzy through a blown amp, adding a danceable swing that inspired everyone from Metallica and Slayer to The Hellacopters and New Bomb Turks. This is the sound of a band that knew exactly what they did well and executed it with surgical precision—even when they got sick of playing “Ace of Spades” every night. If you love early Van Halen, AC/DC, the Ramones, or the New Wave of British Heavy Metal, this episode is for you. We break down how Lemmy's voice became the second guitar, why Eddie Clarke's playing is criminally underrated, and what it means when an album charts everywhere from Sweden to Greece but barely makes a dent in the U.S.Episode Highlights00:00 – Intro: Why this listener‑suggested album almost didn't happen01:38 – The “second chance poll” rescue mission and how Testament won the first round05:42 – Chip's legendary three‑question interview with Lemmy (spoiler: he left to “freshen his drink”)10:09 – Album history: recorded August–September 1980, produced by Vic Maile (Hendrix, Zeppelin, Clapton)14:25 – Lemmy's time in Hawkwind, The Damned, and as Jimi Hendrix's roadie17:29 – (We Are) The Road Crew – Why Lemmy's tribute to roadies still makes crew members cry18:20 – The “Ace of Spades” legend: Why Lemmy sang “eight of spades” for years and nobody noticed19:02 – What Works: Jay breaks down the 70s swing, boogie‑rock energy, and danceable aggression25:14 – Fast and Loose – The ZZ Top‑meets‑Motörhead shuffle that proves this is rock and roll27:07 – How Motörhead influenced thrash, punk, and 90s action rock (Hellacopters, New Bomb Turks)31:54 – The Chase Is Better Than the Catch – The Van Halen‑inspired riff that almost wasn't34:18 – Eddie Clarke's guitar genius: Why “Fast” Eddie is the secret weapon of this album37:58 – What Doesn't Work: Aged lyrics, formulaic moments, and why Lemmy's voice is an acquired taste42:34 – Why fade‑outs are the album's worst decision48:53 – Final Verdicts: Worthy Album, Better EP, or Decent Single?55:37 – Gavin Reed gets credit for suggesting this album (and arguing with Jay about whether it's metal)Keep the Conversation GoingThis album came back from the dead because a listener like you suggested it. This week, we received our annual audit visit from corporate! That's right, The Chairman not only graced us with his presence, but he demanded we deliver to you this episode: “Grave Mistake: BÖC Shoulda Been Huge!!!”. One could argue that selling 24M albums would negate “Shoulda Been Huge” treatment. However, when most folks can only name 3 songs by this band, and one of them is due to an SNL skit, we think they fit the bill. This episode is rooted in our Should Have Been category; however, there is a strong case to be made that they've been largely forgotten as innovators and architects of what we know as heavy metal. We think they should be remembered as titans of hard rock and metal! Gang Of Four's moment was dramatic but brief. It was littered with times when the future seemed impossibly bright before disaster crept up with a cosh in their relentless “refusal to do the obvious”. Being a musician, he points out, is a ridiculous life best not taken seriously. His memoir ‘To Hell With Poverty!' rightly describes itself as “rich with stories”, many remembered in this spirited exchange with David and Mark, among them … … the transformational effect of a scholarship to the boarding school where he met GO4 guitarist Andy Gill and future film-makers Adam Curtis and Paul Greengrass. … life-changing records he heard in the school art department – Highway 61 Revisited, the Stooges, the MC5. … “never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity”. … aged 11, bumping into John Lennon in Sevenoaks who'd just bought his Mr Kite poster. … signing a contract with the manager that robbed them and whose busy and efficient office of “ripped and buffed” staff turned out to be hired actors. … being thrown off Top Of The Pops for not changing an ‘offensive' song lyric – “EMI were “mortified”. … the old hippy world of the ‘70s – Hawkwind, the Whole Earth Catalog and “a Withnailesque flat where we had an airgun to shoot the mice”. … hopeless online misinterpretations of his song lyrics - “there may be soil under fuck all” (aka “there may be oil under Rockall”). … the rigours of trying to promote “outsider music”. … reaching “the point where the game is up”. … the Bourgeois Brothers, the ‘comedy' duo he formed with Andy Gill at Leeds University and why they returned to England to form a band in the mould of Talking Heads, the Ramones and Richard Hell. … and why recording the audiobook moved him to tears. Order ‘To Hell With Poverty!' here:https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hell-Poverty-Class-Inside-Gang/dp/1636142346 Gang Of Four tour dates:https://www.songkick.com/artists/393675-gang-of-four/calendarFind out more about how to help us to keep the conversation going: https://www.patreon.com/wordinyourear Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast.
