Luke 4:38-44 - Jesus Was Sent to Preach

Today we will finish our study in Luke 4 where Luke shared several things about the early ministry of Jesus. First Jesus was tempted by the devil in the wilderness and successfully overcame him and his temptations by the Word of God (vv. 1-13). Then Jesus begins His teaching, preaching and healing ministry in the dark region of Galilee (vv. 14-15). After becoming well known, Jesus went back to His hometown of Nazareth where He was rejected after His first message because He clearly proclaimed Himself to be the Messiah (vv. 16-30).   At this point, Jesus goes down to the city of Capernaum on the north shore of the Sea of Galilee which becomes His headquarters for ministry for the next three and a half years. At the synagogue there, as He was teaching, He was confronted by a demon possessed man. Jesus cast the demon out and we discussed how Jesus has authority over demons (vv. 31-37). Immediately afterwards Jesus went to Simon Peter's house where He heals Peter's mother-in-law, and before the evening is over more people came to be healed, and He cast out more demons (vv. 38-41), and we discussed Jesus's authority over disease.   It is interesting to note in both cases in this chapter where Jesus confronted the demons He “rebuked them, and did not allow them to speak” and proclaim “that He was the Christ, the Son of God” (vv. 35, 41). Why? Because Jesus didn't need the demons to tell the world that He was the Son of God, but knew that was the reason He came to preach (v. 43). And that is my lesson today, Jesus came to preach. Later Jesus sent His disciples to preach and has also commission us even today to proclaim and preach Jesus to the world. To share the Gospel, the Good News of the death, burial, and resurrection of Jesus Christ and His power to forgive us our sins and to live a transformed life.   In verse 42 we read, “Now when it was day”. It appears that Jesus spent the evening and most of night healing the people that were coming and early the next morning He went to a place to pray before He continued His preaching ministry. Jesus knew the necessity of restoring His spiritual energy, of restoring His spiritual strength in prayer, in spending time in communion with His Father. In this time of prayer Jesus is also getting direction of where He should go and what He should do. Jesus knew the importance of the leading and guiding ministry of the Holy Spirit in ministry.   My friend, we should never enter our daily ministry with others until we have spent time with God in His Word and in prayer. Not only Luke, but Mark points out how Jesus went to a quiet place, a solitary place, away from the crowds and the demands and distractions of the world and He prayed (Mark 1:35). Jesus later taught His disciples and us, that when we pray we should “go into the closet and shut the door” (Matthew 6:6). This does not mean that we go into a literal closet or room, which we might need to do, but that we shut the door to the things in our mind and around us that would distract us from concentrating on our communion with our heavenly Father.   It might mean that we turn off the cell phone, the computer, the tv, or any other thing that might keep trying to get our attention.  We make sure that we spend quality time with Jesus, with our heavenly Father, with the Holy Spirit, getting strength and direction for the day. Now notice in verse 42, even after Jesus went to a deserted place to pray, “the crowd sought Him and came to Him and tried to keep Him from leaving them.” And Jesus informed them that, “I must preach the kingdom of God… for this purpose I have been sent”. Jesus made it clear He didn't just come to heal people or do miracles, but primarily He came to preach the Gospel!   Today, like Jesus we can minister to the hungry and to the sick people around us, but we must never forget our main purpose is to share the message of God's Good News of Jesus with those who are lost and dying!   God bless!

Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

Today we are celebrating the Ascension of our Lord. This actually happened on Thursday, 40 days after Easter. It is when Jesus officially, physically, goes back home. Luke feels it is important enough to share it in his Gospel briefly and then in more detail in Acts. For the Gospel writer John, it was also important, as it was always death, resurrection and ascension. Although John only said it was going to happen, but never told the story, we only find the actual account in Luke-Acts. When people leave us, to stay overnight for the first time, to go off to live elsewhere from what has been called home, we don't really know when or whether we will see them again. It normally gives us pause. We may linger after that good-bye or see you later. It may take us a bit to resume and continue on. Sometimes it gets easier. Then there is that time that we lose a loved one. It could be a friend, parent, sibling or partner/spouse. It hurts as we come to realize that we will not see them again until we go to join them. It can take time to move forward, at first it may be slow. Even after we get moving forward, there will be days or so that we stop and process before we can move forward again. Even though leaving is part of life it is not easy. Moving forward and at what speed looks and feels different for everyone. The leaving/grieving process requires giving others and ourselves space. One needs to experience it, before we can move forward. Without acknowledging the feelings and giving ourselves permission we may always come back to the same place. In turning to our Ascension Sunday stories, we are reminded that Jesus had told his disciples to remain in Jerusalem after the resurrection. He told them to wait for what God had promised. Jesus reminded them that he had been baptized by John the Baptist with water, but within a few days he will be baptized with the Holy Spirit. We know what is coming and that is the Holy Spirit, Pentecost. This happens 50 days after Jesus' resurrection. The disciples did not know what they would be experiencing. Thus, Jesus was saying just wait and you will get what you need to be my witnesses. Now I must say the disciples had a little bit different experience in Jesus leaving. While they were meeting together, they were wondering if Jesus was going to retore the kingdom of Israel. In other words, bring restoration back that God would be reigning. Jesus says, it is not for you to know when this will happen. I'm sure this caused great anxiety. Jesus goes on to tell them that they will be his witnesses to Judea and Samaria and even to the ends of the earth. He is alluding to Jews and Gentles, that is everyone. This is the disciples commission to continue the work that he had begun with them. Having said this, he was lifted up into a cloud before their eyes and taken from their sight. I can almost safely say that none of our loved ones left us in that way. What could they do but continue looking up. Is this it? Is he gone forever? Does this mean that we are on our own now? What was going to happen to and/or for them in Jerusalem? It was normal for them to be lingering and taking some space to be in that moment. There are times that all of us need someone to say don't forget that I am here for you and with you. Two messengers dressed in white stood beside them and asked, “You Galileans, why are you standing here looking into the skies? Jesus, who has been taken from you, this same Jesus will return, in the same way you watched him go up into heaven.” I'm not sure how quickly any of us could have moved forward from there. First Jesus goes up into the air, then these two messengers dressed in white say Jesus will return in the same way. It is a great deal to process. There was at least some precedent for going up into the air as this is what Elijah did. Also, we are not sure what happened to Moses. Moving forward is not easy as many of us have and are experiencing. Faith Lutheran Church is working on moving forward. The transition team is in the process of writing the Ministry Site Profile. Many of you have been waiting to hear this. As a community of faith, we have paused in some respects to examine who we are, who is our neighbor, and what God is calling us to do. On the other hand, ministry has not stopped as the Holy Spirit has still been moving and we have continued witnessing. Taking time and space in the midst of doing ministry is not easy. Sitting can often seem like wasting time, but it can also be a time of refocusing and allowing the Holy Spirit to speak to us. When we give ourselves permission to stop and rest in Jesus, we often see and hear more than we want to. At that point human nature often says get up and get moving. It is often hard to see and hear what God is calling us to do. Whatever it is will require change. This is true for us as individuals and as a community of faith. We are challenged then to trust the Holy Spirit. The Holy Spirit will speak to us in many different ways, scripture, others, or events. This is where I have the difficult part, to know when to sit and when to move. Most often our human nature relies on anxiety to know these things. This is not usually the Holy Spirit's timing, it is ours. When we rely on our timing, we will not be the effective witnesses that we are called to be. The disciples did not technically have the Holy Spirit yet to be the effective witnesses that they were called to be. We do have the Holy Spirit. Our challenge on this Ascension Sunday is to take the time to rest in the Spirit and deal with our anxiety to discern when to move forward and when to sit. I believe this is true for every thing in our lives as individuals and as a community of faith. Discernment is not really a one human person determination. It takes listening to those who can be objective and taking it back to the Spirit to check it out. I believe just as the disciples had the two messengers, we do also. They come in different forms at different times. Look and listen for these messengers. When we find times that we are in discernment or asking questions or maybe running to fast, stop and sit with the Spirit. The Spirit will eventually tell us when it is time to move forward. We will experience times of anxiety when there is leaving and grieving in our individual lives, it happens in communities of faith. When something makes us uncomfortable, I challenge us to sit with the Holy Spirit. Look and listen for the messengers that God in Jesus Christ will send to us. As disciples of Jesus Christ, the only way that we can be effective witnesses is to trust the Spirit and listen for her discernment. Let us pray, Gracious God, we thank you for sending Jesus to earth to model for us how to live out our lives in you, loving you and our neighbor. As we live out our lives we find out that there will be times of leaving/grieving. You provide your presence in so many ways to help us through these times which involve change. May you Holy Spirit help us to stop and rest in you when we are anxious and uncomfortable in life. Help us to know your time table as to sitting and moving forward. In Jesus name, Amen.

Talk 25   Mark 8:27-38   The Challenge of the Cross Welcome to Talk 25 in our series on Mark's Gospel. If you listened to my Easter Sunday message recently (which was not part of this series), you will remember that we concentrated our attention on the repeated emphasis on the use of the word must in connection with Jesus' death and resurrection.  One of the verses we referred to is found in today's passage: 31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. We saw that it was necessary for Jesus to suffer and to die and to rise again because that was the only way we could be saved. But in today's passage we see that this was clearly something the disciples, especially Peter, didn't want to hear. Nevertheless, Jesus went on to insist that not only was it necessary for him to suffer and die, but that if anyone wanted to follow him, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow him (v34). This presented an enormous challenge to his disciples then, and, if we take Jesus' words seriously, it is equally challenging for us today. In this passage we see three challenges: ·      The challenge of confessing who Jesus really is (27-30) ·      The challenge of acknowledging that his death was necessary (31-33) ·      The challenge of taking up our cross and following him (34-38).   The challenge of confessing who Jesus really is (27-30) 27 Jesus and his disciples went on to the villages around Caesarea Philippi. On the way he asked them, "Who do people say I am?" 28 They replied, "Some say John the Baptist; others say Elijah; and still others, one of the prophets." 29 "But what about you?" he asked. "Who do you say I am?" Peter answered, "You are the Christ." 30 Jesus warned them not to tell anyone about him. The important thing here is not what other people – your parents, your brothers and sisters, your friends – say about Jesus. What matters is what you say. And notice that the word is say, not think. Of course, what we say will be affected by what we think, but if we believe that Jesus is who he claimed to be, it's important that we say so. Paul tells us that if you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved (Romans 10:9). Of course, Peter had not yet come to understand these things, but by divine revelation (see Matthew 16:17) he had come to believe that Jesus was the Messiah and was not afraid to say so. Others might see Jesus as an outspoken preacher like John the Baptist, or as a powerful miracle worker like Elijah, or as just another prophet or religious leader, but salvation depends on the acknowledgement and confession that JESUS IS LORD. But, as the next few verses make clear, Jesus was not the kind of Messiah that Peter and the other disciples were expecting. They were certainly not expecting a Messiah who would suffer and die. The challenge of acknowledging that his death was necessary (31-33) 31 He then began to teach them that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed and after three days rise again. 32 He spoke plainly about this, and Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But when Jesus turned and looked at his disciples, he rebuked Peter. "Get behind me, Satan!" he said. "You do not have in mind the things of God, but the things of men." The disciples would have understood that the Son of Man was a title used for the Messiah in Daniel 7:13-14. And behold, with the clouds of heaven there came one like a son of man, and he came to the Ancient of Days and was presented before him. And to him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him; his dominion is and everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom one that shall not be destroyed. This was almost certainly the kind of Messiah they would have been expecting, and Jesus' claims that as the Son of Man he had authority on earth to forgive sins (Mark 2:10) and to be Lord of the Sabbath (2:28) would undoubtedly have backed up their conviction. And later in today's passage Jesus uses the title in connection with his coming in his Father's glory with the holy angels (v38), a theme which he repeats in 13:26 and 14:62. So their expectation was not entirely wrong. But it was only half the story. Jesus now had to teach them that certain things had to happen first. The Son of Man must suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests and teachers of the law, and that he must be killed. We should not be surprised at Peter's reaction. Surely suffering and rejection and death could not possibly be the role of the Messiah? But in fact they were not only possible. They were essential. The Son of Man must suffer… And Jesus not only rebukes Peter strongly for remonstrating with him, but he repeats the message again and again in chapters 9 and 10 (Mark 9:12, 31; 10:33, 45). But why was his suffering necessary? Why must he die? Because this was the only way that we could be saved. He died for our sins. He died in our place. He took the punishment our sins deserved. He died, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring us to God. There was no other good enough to pay the price of sin. He only could unlock the gate of Heaven and let us in. To be saved we must acknowledge that his death was necessary. Our pride holds us back. Human wisdom rejects the message of the cross (1 Corinthians 1:18-19). We hesitate to admit that it was our shortcomings that made it so. But there was, there is, no other way. The Son of Man came to give his life as a ransom for many (Mark 10:45), for me, for you, and if it were not so, would the Messiah have allowed himself to be crucified? The challenge faces every man and woman, every boy and girl. The challenge must be faced, and it must be embraced. To be saved I must accept the fact that Jesus died for me. The challenge of taking up our cross and following him (34-38).   34 Then he called the crowd to him along with his disciples and said: "If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.  36 What good is it for a man to gain the whole world, yet forfeit his soul? 37 Or what can a man give in exchange for his soul? 38 If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels." Having begun to teach his disciples that it was necessary for him to suffer and die and rise again, Jesus now includes the crowd. What he is about to say applies to everyone. Notice the use of the words anyone and everyone. There can be no exceptions. Acknowledge Christ and be saved or deny Christ and perish. The way of the cross is inevitable, not only for Christ, but for all who will follow him. If he must suffer, then we must expect to suffer too. We must take up our cross and follow him. Peter, from whom Mark probably obtained most of the material for writing his Gospel, writing to Christian slaves who were being unjustly punished, reminded them of the suffering of Christ and told them: To this you were called, because Christ suffered for you, leaving you an example, that you should follow in his steps (1 Peter 2:21). If the opponents of Christ treated him unfairly, we must not be surprised if they treat us unfairly too. But Jesus said that whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it. Throughout the world today there are thousands who are losing their lives because of their faith in Christ. But suffering for the cause of Christ must not be confused with the things we suffer along with the rest of humanity. By no means all that Christians suffer is caused by persecution. Most of our suffering is caused by the fact that we're living in a fallen universe. In Romans 8 Paul tells us that, ever since the Fall, creation has been in bondage to decay and has been groaning as in the pains of childbirth right up to the present time (vv21-22). But our present sufferings are not worth comparing with the glory that will be revealed in us (v18). Meanwhile we are still eagerly waiting for the redemption of our bodies (v23). So suffering is inevitable. We are not exempt from it. Until Jesus returns we suffer along with the rest of humanity. The difference is that we Christians have hope. If we suffer with him, we shall also reign with him. So suffering along with the rest of humanity because we're all living in a fallen universe is not the same as suffering for the sake of Christ. It is not taking up our cross to follow Jesus. Yet this is required of every Christian. Jesus says, If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. This will mean different things for different people, but if I am not denying myself and actively choosing to make sacrifices for the cause of Christ, can I really call myself a Christian? This choosing to deny ourselves and to live a sacrificial life for Christ is a practical demonstration of what is known as our identification with Christ. When we first came to Jesus for the forgiveness of our sins, believing that he died in our place, God counted Jesus' death as our death, and we too were accepting his death as our death. That's why Paul could say that we died with Christ, we were crucified with Christ, buried with Christ, made alive with Christ and raised with Christ. In short, we are identified with Christ in his death, burial and resurrection. With this in mind, let's compare verse 31 with verses 34-35. First Jesus teaches them that he, the Son of Man, must suffer many things and be rejected … and that he must be killed and … rise again. Then he says that as his followers his disciples must expect the same: If anyone would come after me, he must deny himself and take up his cross and follow me. 35 For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for me and for the gospel will save it.   The pattern is the same. Rejection and suffering, followed by resurrection and reward. But of course, we don't want to suffer. We don't want to be rejected. But neither did Jesus. Hear him praying in the Garden of Gethsemane, My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death… My Father, if it is possible, may this cup be taken from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will (Matthew 26:38-39). Taking up one's cross means saying this daily. Not what I want, but what you want.  Jesus didn't want to suffer and die, but he chose the way of the cross, and so must we. But of course, the cross was not the end of the story. He rose again, and so, says Jesus, will we. What a wonderful promise to all who will accept him, but how serious a warning to those who reject him: If anyone is ashamed of me and my words in this adulterous and sinful generation, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when he comes in his Father's glory with the holy angels (v38) And then he will reward each person according to what he has done (Matthew 16:27). And in Matthew 10 he says: 32 Whoever acknowledges me before men, I will also acknowledge him before my Father in heaven. 33 But whoever disowns me before men, I will disown him before my Father in heaven. …38 and anyone who does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. 39 Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. The choice is ours. And the consequences of that choice are eternal. What choice will you make? Will you accept the challenge of confessing who Jesus really is? Will you acknowledge that his death was necessary for you? Will you take up your cross and follow Jesus?

Jesus Teaches His Disciples 1 Welcome back to our series, AGOG – A Glimpse of God. We are on Day 19 of our adventure, looking together at the life of the most amazing person in human history - Jesus Christ of Nazareth. Mark 8:13-26 He got into a boat again and crossed to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. The disciples had forgotten to take any bread along and had only one loaf with them in the boat. Jesus warned them, “Be careful! Watch out for the yeast of the Pharisees and the yeast of Herod!” They had been discussing with one another that they didn't have any bread. Jesus knew what they were saying and asked them, “Why are you discussing the fact that you don't have any bread? Don't you understand yet? Don't you catch on? Are your minds closed? Are you blind and deaf? Don't you remember? When I broke the five loaves for the five thousand, how many baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?” They told him, “Twelve.” “When I broke the seven loaves for the four thousand, how many large baskets did you fill with leftover pieces?” They answered him, “Seven.” He asked them, “Don't you catch on yet?” As they came to Bethsaida, some people brought a blind man to Jesus. They begged Jesus to touch him. Jesus took the blind man's hand and led him out of the village. He spit into the man's eyes and placed his hands on him. Jesus asked him, “Can you see anything?” The man looked up and said, “I see people. They look like trees walking around.” Then Jesus placed his hands on the man's eyes a second time, and the man saw clearly. His sight was normal again. He could see everything clearly even at a distance.  Jesus told him when he sent him home, “Don't go into the village.” Jesus and His disciples have now crossed the Sea of Galilee. Jesus on the journey across the sea had warned them about the yeast of the Pharisees, Sadducees and King Herod. Why does Jesus include King Herod? Jesus mentioned King Herod because he was a fickle ruler who was mean and treacherous. Herod would do everything to compromise with others for his own benefit alone. Both groups had wanted further signs from Jesus! The Pharisees and Sadducees as we saw yesterday! Herod we discover later from Luke 23, had longed for Jesus to give him a further sign! The yeast talked about by Jesus was their hypocrisy and evil. This was seen in evidence in our last study where they asked Jesus for a sign. Yeast in the New Testament is often used to illustrate evil. A little evil can spread a long way, much like yeast can in bread. Just as false teaching can decimate a church. Jesus was also warning his disciples to be convinced of the signs they had already seen, without coveting yet more signs! The disciples however, were discussing between themselves the problem of not having enough food. They were thinking that the yeast Jesus was talking about was yeast which went into bread. Jesus knew what they were talking about. They had obviously forgotten that they had witnessed the great feeding of the masses, and that Jesus had the power to feed them. No wonder Jesus seems exasperated with them and rebukes them! It is as if he is saying to them “Look, guys! Don't you realise who I am yet? Even though we have been together for a while now! Two times you have been with me and collected the leftovers after we fed the crowds together!” Oh the disciples had seen and heard but they still were lacking spiritual discernment and were spiritually blind and deaf. Their hearts were still hardened towards him in that aspect for now. It was also an act of ingratitude towards Jesus, that having twice seen bread created from nothing, they were now showing anxiety about not having enough bread. Then as if to exacerbate the point, Mark puts here a little story that isn't in the other gospels. When they get to Bethsaida, a blind man is bought to Jesus. First Jesus heals his eyes in part. The man looks and sees people walking as if they were trees, so there is no clarity yet with his vision – but at least he can see in part! Then a second time, Jesus heals the man's eyes fully and his sight is restored. Jesus didn't want to be seen as only a healer and miracle worker, so he tells the man not to say anything. Mark is making the point that the disciples at this time were like that blind man. They were like the man at the first stage of his healing. They couldn't see the spiritual truths and lacked understanding. To the disciples at this time, Jesus was still only a miracle worker, wise man, prophet and healer. It would not be until later that they would fully see! What about you? Again, I ask, who do you say Jesus is? What are you waiting for? Jesus is offering you free eternal salvation, by grace alone through faith alone! The choice is yours! Jesus loves you and because He loves you, He will not force you to love Him in return! But His love is compelling and He is calling you to come and take up His free offer of eternal life! It is not too late! Today can be the day of your salvation and new life! Are you going to acknowledge Him as your saviour or are you going to merely put him aside as a miracle worker or man of wisdom? Come back tomorrow for Day 20 of our series AGOG, as we continue to look together at that extraordinary man, Jesus Christ, through the Gospel accounts! We will see together, another example of Jesus teaching his disciples... See you soon! Right Mouse click or tap here to save this as an audio mp3 file

Do our actions as a Christ-follower really matter?   "You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you." John 15:16 CSB   Notice a few things in this passage. First Jesus chose them. Jesus is choosing the people and assigning the work. He chooses which branches bear fruit.   Notice second that the fruit we bear will remain. This means that what we do matters. We get to take part in Jesus' strategy for saving the world. Our actions matter and if our actions matter, our inaction matters too. This is why I think complacency and lack of urgency is a problem for us. We can get occupied with so many useless things. But we can do things that will last forever.   As a result, when we ask God for something according to his will, he will do it. The reference to the ask being according to God's will comes from the phrase "in my name."   So you can pray for every person you meet. Your prayers will be answered when they line up with the will of Jesus and you will experience joy. What you do matters. If you never pray, God still accomplishes his work. He still saves people. He will still be glorified. But you will miss out. If we all celebrate the victory, but you know you didn't have much to do with it, you are less joyful than if you scored the winning run or if you made a key play.   Today, we can remember that we can bear fruit and that fruit can remain. What we do matters. Even if you have a meaningless job you hate, you can still say or do something that can matter forever. So stand up straight. Take your position and do your job like you're doing it for God. You are. Any moment you can interact with someone and impact their eternity.   Please also remember we're a donor supported ministry. How clever are you when it comes to using money?   And a poor widow came and put in two small copper coins, which make a penny. And he called his disciples to him and said to them, “Truly, I say to you, this poor widow has put in more than all those who are contributing to the offering box. For they all contributed out of their abundance, but she out of her poverty has put in everything she had, all she had to live on.” Mark 12:42-44 ESV   I don't know about you, but I like to think I'm pretty sharp with how I handle money. I am a pretty good shopper and I can make a good deal. I'm not the best I've seen, though. I've seen better.   We've been talking about how we use temporal resources in our world and we've called this series Eternally Shrewd. To be shrewd means that we are clever, resourceful. We may even be cunning, or a bit under-handed. We get the results we want.   In this passage 2 really extreme things are happening. First Jesus is noticing something and he makes a point of it. He sees something no one else sees and he points it out to the disciples. But the second thing is this poor lady gave away everything she had to live on.   I can't imagine the kind of guts that took. I want to be courageous, but I confess when it comes to money, I can be a coward. I want the courage of this lady, but I am afraid to ask for it. In one way, only having a penny would be a bad situation. But in another, Jesus makes a great point.   She put in all she had to live on. The next move is up to God. Jesus doesn't even discuss it. She is dependent on God. Jesus also said in Matthew 6, "Look at the birds of the air, that they do not sow, nor reap nor gather into barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not worth much more than they? Matthew 6:26 NASB.   Can we trust Jesus like a bird, or like this widow? And what do we miss if the answer is "No?"   To be eternally shrewd it would mean to make choices and take actions that produce the best result. Everywhere in scripture, I see God challenging me to trust him more, to give more away, to go big.   Today, I want to live more like that. You can pray about that for me, and I will pray about that for both of us. I hope God's people live so radically different that every person notices. If you heard yesterday's podcast, ask me what I did. Head over to https://twitter.com/mikehenrysr and ask.   Let's work to be shrewd in the eyes of God. Let's do the things he says even when they sound a bit crazy. That may mean taking a marketplace mission trip. Or getting some friends together to take one. The Tao of Christ
The Nondual Ethics of Jesus

The Tao of Christ

In this episode I will show how nonduality underlies Jesus' ethics. His ethical teachings in the Sermon on the Mount have a pattern. First Jesus says, “You have heard that it was said…” and then he quotes a passage from the Torah. Then he adds, “but I say to you.” Then he give his teaching. In other words he says, “The Bible says this, but I say this.” He was not negating what the Bible said. He was building upon it and completing it. He was fulfilling it. I am going to take each of these sayings in his section of the Sermon on the Mount and see how his teachings reflect a nondual ethic that goes beyond dualistic understandings of right and wrong, us and them. Living in nonduality is entirely different than living by moral rules and laws. When one is aware of the nondual Reality that unites everything, we live naturally out of this nondual nature rather than trying to figure out with our heads what we should do. Paul calls this walking in the Spirit as opposed to obeying the Law.

Man-child Born of the Philadelphia Bride (Audio) David Eells - 10/26/22 Christine Beadsworth had this dream: I dreamt that a woman I knew was going to have a baby by caesarian section. When I rushed to her side to support her, she had already had a natural birth after a labor of only two hours. I held the baby boy for a long time and gazed at his face. He was very mature and could already speak and I discovered he had eight fingers on his right hand. The eighth finger branched off the sixth finger. David Eells' interpretation: A baby by caesarian section implies a birth by the works of man, which will not happen to this first-born fruit of Christ in these days called the Man-child. Like this dream shows we all start out in the Works of man but through our faith God brings us through this stage. The right hand is the hand that blesses the first-born, which Jacob put upon Ephraim, meaning in Hebrew the "fullness of nations". Ephraim was a type of the Church of all nations. He was the second-born son of Joseph, as a type of Jesus, which received a double portion of the first-born son's (Israel's) blessing. When Jesus came this happened and His anointing, which in large part was rejected by Israel, fell upon the born-again Church. The first group to fully manifest the Church, meaning "called out ones” is the Bride, who John said were the first fruits disciples of Jesus the Man-child. We must come out from the sins of the 6 Churches by faith to be in the Philadelphia Bride. Ephraim represents the Church in the process of coming out of all nations. The sixth finger is the sixth Church spoken of in Revelation, the Philadelphia, or brotherly love, Church. Out of this will come the Man-child whose number is eight which represents new beginnings and that the flesh of their old man is cut off on the eighth day. The gematria for "Jesus" is 888. The man-child is the first-fruits to be born in His image. The seven fingers also represent the seven spiritual shepherds that are sent by the Man-child to minister to the seven Churches, which is mentioned in Hidden Manna For the End Times. First Jesus is coming to be manifested in the Man-child ministry. (Mic.5:2) But thou, Beth-lehem Ephrathah, which art little to be among the thousands of Judah, out of thee shall one come forth unto me that is to be ruler in Israel; whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting. Obviously this is Jesus. (3) Therefore will he give them up, until the time that she who travaileth hath brought forth: then the residue of his brethren shall return unto the children of Israel. Jesus left because of rebellion and will return in the Man-child reformers who are born of the travailing woman in Revelation 12. Through them the remnant shall return to Israel, a type of the Church. As Jesus fed the former rain woman in a body of flesh, so He will feed the latter rain woman in a corporate body of flesh. (Mic.5:4) And He shall stand, and shall feed [His flock] in the strength of the Lord, in the majesty of the name of the Lord His God: and they shall abide; for now shall He be great unto the ends of the earth. The Jesus of the former rain was revered by the disciples and feared by His enemies but because of apostasy this has not been true for many centuries since. The man-child and the disciples who follow in His steps will restore this and He shall be "great unto the ends of the earth". The man-child's teaching will bring peace to the seven churches that are at war with the beast. (5) And this [man] shall be [our] peace, When the Assyrian shall come into our land, and shall tread in our palaces, then shall we raise against him seven shepherds and eight principle (Hebrew: "princes among") men. The corporate body of the man-child is "this man" who brings peace to the corporate woman with his teachings that enable her to resist the beast invasion. He brings peace because the "Prince of peace" is in his heart. Spiritually speaking we are the "land" and the "palaces" that the corporate beast is trying to invade. (1 Cor.3:9) For we are God's fellow-workers: ye are God's husbandry (Greek: "tilled land"), God's building ("palaces"). As we shall see, the beast is a corporate spirit from the abyss (Rev.17:8) that inhabits the body of the wicked (3) and seeks to inhabit the righteous and mark them. Notice that the "Assyrians" are called "him" which shows that they are seen as the corporate body of the beast. Since the Assyrian beast kingdom passed away over 600 years before Christ they could not have been connected with Jesus or the man-child. Therefore God, as usual, was using the beast of that day to represent a particular aspect of the end time beast. As the Assyrian beast did not conquer Jerusalem, so the end time beast will not conquer those spiritually abiding in the New Jerusalem, the Bride. (Mic.5:5)...[T]hen shall we raise against him seven shepherds and eight principle (Hebrew: "princes among") men. The Man-child Jesus raised up twelve apostolic shepherds primarily to restore those of the "twelve-tribes of Israel who would listen (Mt.10:5; Acts 26:7; Jas.1:1; 1Pet.1:1). In exact parallel, the corporate man-child will raise up "seven" corporate apostolic "shepherds" primarily to restore the "seven churches". The man-child's primary job is to feed the unleavened bread of the Word to disciples in order to manifest Christ in them. These will be the new leadership for the seven churches in the last 3 1/2 years. These "seven shepherds" are not sectarian religious leaders but one man in Christ and are inhabited by one "prince of peace", Jesus, hence "eight princes among men”.  We will see that even after the Man-child Jesus' 3 1/2 year ministry, He promised to be with the shepherds in spirit "unto the consummation of the age", (Greek: Mt.28:20) hence "eight princes among men". These princes are sons of the King and have authority over His realm of the seven churches. The seven churches of Revelation are a type of seven different types of Christians in the Church. (Isa.4:1) And seven women (the Church) shall take hold of one man in that day. The "one man" here is Jesus manifested in the man-child. Then He will be manifested in the seven shepherds and then in the true Church. One of God's solutions to the apostasy in the Church is new leadership. (Isa.1:26) [A]nd I will restore thy judges as at the first, and thy counselors as at the beginning. The same type counselors in the former rain will be given in the latter rain. Here is another confirmation of the man-child giving His revelation to seven shepherds, who passed it on to the seven churches. When the Man-child Jesus sent His shepherds out, He called them "apostles", meaning "one sent forth”. In other words, the shepherds were the man-child's messengers to the churches. As a type of the man-child, John on the Isle of Patmos was "a partaker with you in the tribulation" (Rev.1:9) when he was caught up to the throne of God and given a revelation of the coming tribulation to give to the seven churches. (4:1) After these things I saw, and behold, a door opened in heaven, and the first voice that I heard, [a voice] as of a trumpet speaking with me, one saying, Come up hither, and I will show thee the things which must come to pass hereafter. (2) Straightway I was in the Spirit: and behold, there was a throne set in heaven, and one sitting upon the throne. Like Jesus, he was given a revelation of the apostasy in the Church and told to send it to the seven churches by the hand of seven angels. (1:11)... What thou seest, write in a book and send [it] to the seven churches.... (2:1,8,12,18; 3:1,7,14) To the angel of the church in Ephesus (and so with; Smyrna, Pergamum, Thyatira, Sardi, Philadelphia, Laodicea) write.... "Angel" in these cases is the Greek word angelos meaning "messengers" and is also used of ministers in the New Testament (Example: Luk.4:24,27; 9:52). The equivalent Hebrew word in the Old Testament is translated "messenger" when speaking of priests (Mal.2:7), John the Baptist, and Jesus (Luk.3:1). Since it doesn't make sense that John sent the revelation by angels, he must have sent it by seven minister messengers to the seven churches.  This is exactly what Jesus did as man-child. He shared His revelation with minister messengers, who shared it with the seven churches.   The Church Called Brotherly Love Mark Fritts (12-26-04)(David's notes in red) I woke up and this question came to my mind. What church is the church I am visiting today, for the second time, in relation to Revelation two? I don't know why I asked this but the Lord immediately said, "number three," which I discovered to be the Church of Pergamos. (They were rebuked for the Nicolaitan error of being lords over God's flock and the Balaam error of following idols (like a false Jesus) and feeding God's people greasy grace doctrines.) I asked the Lord to show me if I should tell the pastor of this church and He led me to Acts 18: 9, "Be not afraid but speak and hold not thy peace”. So I left the pastor a letter explaining what I thought the Lord was saying to this "Word of Faith" church. (Many of these lack the crucified life) Why do things like this continually happen to me? My wife is tired of me having tough words for churches. She wants us to settle down in a church and find a good youth group for our kids. I asked the Lord to show me what I should say to this church if they don't repent and I believe he said, "Ezekiel fourteen". (In this chapter strong delusion came upon those who set up idols in their heart.) Then I asked the Lord what church Unleavened Bread Bible Study represented and I heard, "number six". I did not know Philadelphia was the sixth church. (Philadelphia is the only church that was not rebuked but was promised, "I also will keep thee from the hour of trial". Philadelphia means "love of the brethren," Philo = love; adolphos = a brother. It is interesting that "adelphus" means "first from the womb," A = alpha - first; delphus = the womb. The man-child ministry will be the first-born from the womb of the church. {Rev.3:7} And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia write: These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and none shall shut, and that shutteth and none openeth (Authority to bind and loose): {8} I know thy works (behold, I have set before thee a door opened, which none can shut) (The wicked try but fail), that thou hast a little power, and didst keep my word, and didst not deny my name. {9} Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan (Because they worship satan but they think he is God), of them that say they are Jews, and they are not, but do lie (Not circumcised in heart); behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. {10} Because thou didst keep the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of trial, that [hour] which is to come upon the whole world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. Jas 1:3  knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience. 4  And let patience have its perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing. The kind of faith seen in this Galatians text causes us to "dwell in heavenly places in Christ". (Gal.2:20) I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I that live, but Christ living in me: and that life which I now live in the flesh I live in faith, the faith which is in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me. (Our text in Revelation 3:7-13 shows that the Philadelphia Church will escape the hour of trial that would "try them that dwell upon the earth", rather than dwelling "in Heavenly places in Christ". This Church represents the Bride who, like the Shulammite in Song of Solomon, the Bride in Esther and the Bride in Psalm 45, will escape in the King's house on earth. This is no pre-trib rapture, for the Bride will raise up the virgins, as in these cases.) I believe the Words to the Churches in Revelations represents the condition of the seven churches. Some have not died to self at all and need a crucifixion. And some had died a little but still have a long way to go. The tribulation will perfect those who are willing to go to their cross for their crucifiction. (Mat.16:24) Then said Jesus unto his disciples, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow me. (25) For whosoever would save his life shall lose it: and whosoever shall lose his life for my sake shall find it. Back to {Rev 3:11} I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no one take thy crown. {12} He that overcometh, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God , and he shall go out thence no more (Meaning to Abide continually in Jesus, the Word): and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem (The Bride), which cometh down out of heaven from my God, and mine own new name. {13} He that hath an ear, let him hear what the Spirit saith to the churches.   Love Tested- to Be in the Ark of Escape Greg Mozer - 05/21/2016 (David's notes in red) I dreamed I was with a group of people. We had just gone through some very challenging circumstances in which I felt we had escaped with our lives. (We escaped the faction dismemberment that took the spiritual and sometimes physical lives of those not accounted worthy to be in the Bride.) I was unable to remember the details of what took place, but I knew that it was cataclysmic in nature and that we had survived and made it through. (We had overcome in the faction test of brotherly love. {Rev.3:7} And to the angel of the church in Philadelphia [The city of brotherly love, the Bride, one of seven daughters like Moses' wife.] write: These things saith he that is holy, he that is true, he that hath the key of David, he that openeth and none shall shut, and that shutteth and none openeth [They have been given the key of David to bind and loose, open and shut.]: {8} I know thy works (behold, I have set before thee a door opened, which none can shut), that thou hast a little power, and didst keep my word, and didst not deny my name. {9} Behold, I give of the synagogue of Satan, of them that say they are Jews, and they are not, but do lie [they claim to be Christian but obey satan]; behold, I will make them to come and worship before thy feet, and to know that I have loved thee. {10} Because thou didst keep the word of my patience, I also will keep thee from the hour of trial, ("God is Love” and “Love is patient” Jas 1:2  Count it all joy, my brethren, when ye fall into manifold temptations; 3  knowing that the proving of your faith worketh patience. 4  And let patience have its perfect work, that ye may be perfect and entire, lacking in nothing.)   Back to (10b) that hour which is to come upon the whole world, to try them that dwell upon the earth. (This is for the Bema Seat meaning the "footprint tribunal” meaning did you walk as He walked. The wicked will be without excuse for all their evil is recorded.) {11} I come quickly: hold fast that which thou hast, that no one take thy crown. {12} He that overcometh, I will make him a pillar in the temple of my God, and he shall go out thence no more (Abiding in Christ): and I will write upon him the name of my God, and the name (meaning the nature, character and authority) of the city of my God, the new Jerusalem [Bride], which cometh down out of heaven [born from above through obedience to the Word] from my God, and mine own new name. We ended up on a ship that seemed to be a "safe haven" for survivors. (This ship is the ark of safety and preservation is a refuge for those who pass the faction test of brotherly love. The Lord showed us this refuge through many dreams, visions, prophecies and Scriptures.) All on board were grateful to be there. (Amen!) Myself, as well as a woman (whom I do not know), were there tending to a group of children (getting them settled in) on the ship. (Both the spiritual and physical children of the obedient righteous are favored of the Lord. {Pro.20:7} A righteous man that walketh in his integrity, Blessed are his children after him. {Psa 112:2} His seed shall be mighty upon earth: The generation of the upright shall be blessed. {Gen.6:18} But I will establish my covenant with thee; and thou shalt come into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee. {7:1}And Jehovah said unto Noah, Come thou and all thy house into the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before me in this generation. {19:12} And the men said unto Lot, Hast thou here any besides? son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whomsoever thou hast in the city, bring them out of the place. {1Co.7:14} For the unbelieving husband is sanctified in the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified in the brother: else were your children unclean; but now are they holy. The whole Bible is full of these verses.) As we were doing this, we were talking about all the things we had just gone through. (Learning how to escape being devoured by the faction dragon through faith and obedience to the Word.) The woman was concerned about the threat of some aspect of what we had just survived. I said, "I don't think we need to be as concerned about that as much as them". (The factious are rejected from the ark of Jesus and threatened by coming judgment, not like those who are permitted to remain in the ark.) As I said this, I was looking either out a window or maybe off the deck of the ship. I saw a large crowd of people standing there, wanting to get on board but they could not. They were all visibly sick and desperate to get on board. (The faction want to escape the coming judgments but cannot without repentance.) Either the ship had not yet left the dock or we were still really close to land. There were security measures that had to be met before anyone could step foot onto the ship. (They must pass the test of brotherly love. Faction cannot abide in the ark for thy are one.) It was then that we realized that there had been an outbreak of a disease or virus and that all those people were sick and contagious. They looked very sick and unhealthy. (Just like the  faction people who are also spiritually sick and contagious to those who live in sin or do not love. {Gal.5:9} A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump.) It was at this time that the woman was tending to some children when a young black girl walked up to her and just started acting very crazy and threatening. (The ship is spiritual and this black girl is spiritual. She represents one who walks in darkness and not in light. {1Jn.1:7} but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin.) She was very obviously sick with the virus. She became aggressive toward the woman. (The aggression they feel is that of the demons that infest them.) So the woman pulled out a can of mace or pepper spray or something and sprayed her in the face. The black girl ran off. We realized that she was sick and had somehow gotten through security and gotten on the ship. (This has happened as a test for those on the ship but it will be less and less as the infected leave the ship, as they have been doing, leaving behind a sanctified Bride.) Then the scene changed and I was back at my home in Nebraska where I grew up (in his Father's house). There was a black kitten that got into the house. (This represents that rebellion against the Word and darkness that got into Father's house and must be thrown out.) It was really playful and seemed harmless. I was thinking of the viral outbreak in the earlier part of the dream and had a thought that possibly the kitten had been exposed to it and could possibly be contagious. {Gal.5:9} A little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. My thought was to get it out of the house before anyone got bitten or scratched. I tried to grab it but it ran. (When the demons are exposed, they always get offended and run. The tares are being bundled together to be burn as the Lord said.) Eventually, I cornered it and decided to just grab it and get it out of there. I found myself thinking that I would rather take the risk of getting bitten myself than for someone else to get bitten. I grabbed the kitten and, sure enough, it scratched and bit me in the process. (As long as a person obeys the commands of God by faith in Him they are immune. Demons must have legal rights which is permission from God as in Job or disobedience to the Word. {Tit.3:10} A factious man after a first and second admonition refuse; {11} knowing that such a one is perverted, and sinneth, being self-condemned. {Rom.16:17} Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them that are causing the divisions and occasions of stumbling, contrary to the doctrine which ye learned: and turn away from them. {18} For they that are such serve not our Lord Christ, but their own belly; and by their smooth and fair speech they beguile the hearts of the innocent. {2Joh.8} Look to yourselves, that ye lose not the things which we have wrought, but that ye receive a full reward. {9} Whosoever goeth onward and abideth not in the teaching of Christ, hath not God: he that abideth in the teaching, the same hath both the Father and the Son. {10} If any one cometh unto you, and bringeth not this teaching, receive him not into your house, and give him no greeting: {11} for he that giveth him greeting partaketh in his evil works. {Jas.3:16} For where jealousy and faction are, there is confusion and every vile deed.) Then I woke up.   The Ark of God Is the Saints Claire Pienaar - 9/19/22 (David's notes in red) I dreamed that there was a large wooden ship on very rough seas during a storm. (Representing the Ark of the saints that is above the curses of this world, as we will see.) Then I saw how this ship was made. It came together beam by beam from light that I knew to be the light of the saints. (Representing the righteous acts of the saints which is the “lampros” garment, meaning not just white, but glowing as in Rev. 19.) Then from that ship, David Eells appeared and also a male lamb. (David represents  the David Man-child reformers who have befriended and taken advantage of the example and sacrifice of Jesus, the male lamb. These are the first fruits which God uses to sanctify the saints in the Tribulation.) End of dream. (In the Tribulation, the saints first conquer their flesh so that their personal Promised Land is healed. Our physical life which came from the dirt is where the seed of Christ is sown to bring forth Christ in you. This process is to bring forth the fruit which is the spiritual man. These, as those who go in the ark, are God's heavenly land of rest, for “Noah” in Hebrew means “rest.” As Noah went through the seven days in type, so the righteous will conquer themselves in their own tribulation. After the Tribulation at the last trump, the world itself becomes their physical Promised Land. (Rev.11:15) And the seventh angel sounded; and there followed great voices in heaven, and they said, The kingdom of the world is become [the kingdom] of our Lord, and of his Christ…. (Mat.5:5) Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth. When this world also becomes the saint's kingdom then they can conquer the enemies in the earthly Promised Land. The wicked will be under their feet in judgment just as it was with Noah. (Mal.4:3) And ye shall tread down the wicked; for they shall be ashes under the soles of your feet in the day that I make, saith the Lord of hosts.) I asked the Lord for a verse by faith at random and received Psalm 44:7-8: “But You have saved us from our enemies, And You have put them to shame and humiliated those who hate us. In God we have boasted all the day long, And we will praise and give thanks to Your name forever. Selah.” (Riaan: The ark of God is dwelling in the secret place of the most High. The secret place is the mystery of Christ in you, the hope of glory, and living that life now by faith in Christ. It is through this life Christ in the Man-child David reformers is manifested. (These are the spiritual fathers through whom Jesus will bring forth much fruit.) 1Jn 1:7 but if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanseth us from all sin.)   Select Language Afrikaans Albanian Amharic Arabic Armenian Assamese Aymara Azerbaijani Bambara Basque Belarusian Bengali Bhojpuri Bosnian Bulgarian Catalan Cebuano Chichewa Chinese (Simplified) Chinese (Traditional) Corsican Croatian Czech Danish Dhivehi Dogri Dutch Esperanto Estonian Ewe Filipino Finnish French Frisian Galician Georgian German Greek Guarani Gujarati Haitian Creole Hausa Hawaiian Hebrew Hindi Hmong Hungarian Icelandic Igbo Ilocano Indonesian Irish Italian Japanese Javanese Kannada Kazakh Khmer Kinyarwanda Konkani Korean Krio Kurdish (Kurmanji) Kurdish (Sorani) Kyrgyz Lao Latin Latvian Lingala Lithuanian Luganda Luxembourgish Macedonian Maithili Malagasy Malay Malayalam Maltese Maori Marathi Meiteilon (Manipuri) Mizo Mongolian Myanmar (Burmese) Nepali Norwegian Odia (Oriya) Oromo Pashto Persian Polish Portuguese Punjabi Quechua Romanian Russian Samoan Sanskrit Scots Gaelic Sepedi Serbian Sesotho Shona Sindhi Sinhala Slovak Slovenian Somali Spanish Sundanese Swahili Swedish Tajik Tamil Tatar Telugu Thai Tigrinya Tsonga Turkish Turkmen Twi Ukrainian Urdu Uyghur Uzbek Vietnamese Welsh Xhosa Yiddish Yoruba Zulu Powered by Translate Printer-friendly version

Before COVID, few of us had ever been subjected to a quarantine. But that experience effectively isolated us in a bubble. In a spiritual sense, sometimes believers are constantly isolated from the world in a self-imposed quarantine. We don't want to be OF the world so we try not to be IN the world. Today on A NEW BEGINNING, Pastor Greg Laurie points out how that neglects one of our most important responsibilities. It's the kick off of a new series in Acts called The Upside-Down Life. We can learn a lot from a fish! It's not odd that Jesus provided for Peter, the fisherman, through a fish. But, come on! The details of the plan WERE a bit crazy! Together, let's discover what God has to teach us today as we study Matthew 17:22-27, Mark 9:30-32, and Luke 9:43-45. ****** Welcome to Walking in the Word, the biblical teaching arm of the Women World Leaders' podcast. My name is Julie Jenkins, and I am so happy you are with us! If you are new to the podcast, please know that we bring you a new edition of the podcast every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday. You've happened on our Wednesday Edition, Walking in the Word, where we take time to study God's Word together verse by verse, unpacking what it is that He has for us today. We are currently walking through the gospels of Matthew, Mark, Luke, and John. On Fridays, our team of leaders hosts Celebrating God's Grace, where they showcase God's glory in ministry, health, marriage, and everyday life! And on Mondays, Kimberly Hobbs hosts Empowering Lives with Purpose, a 30-minute interview with a different woman of faith who shares her story with the intent of inspiring you to walk in your God-given purpose. If you are new to the podcast, I encourage you to listen to some of our previous podcasts. You will be awed as you see that sometimes God calls us to climb a literal mountain, like Tina Rains, and other times He meets us when we are thrown into the literal fire, like Justina Page. Sometimes He calls us to do something unexpected for Him, like Tina Kadolph, and sometimes He pulls us out of unimaginable circumstances, like Dana Cryer. One thing the stories of these women all have in common is that our amazing God, who has dominion over even the birds of the air and the fish of the sea, will always provide all that His children need. We can trust Him! The world encourages us to compete with each other and even beat each other down as we climb toward our dreams. But we here at Women World Leaders follow God's call to help raise each other up in His name. That's why we exist – to meet you where you are and to empower you on your walk. Because we know that God calls us ALL to lead for HIS cause, we know that the more we can equip leaders, the more we can do together to bring others to Him. So we invite you to join us! You can find out more about the ministry at www.womenworldleaders.com. As we study today, we will be looking at Matthew 17:22-27, Mark 9:30-32, and Luke 9:43-45. Before we begin, let's pray. Dear Most Holy God, we give you this precious time. Father, we thank you for your wisdom and guidance given us in black and white in your Word, and we thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to allow us to interpret and understand all that you want us to know. Holy Spirit, we lean into you, and trust you to teach us exactly what it is you want us to know today. In Jesus' name I pray. Amen As we have followed Jesus' life, we have seen the disciples learn and grow, and we've also seen them fail. Despite this Jesus never stops loving and guiding them and He never stops revealing more and more about Himself. Sometimes they listen. Sometimes they don't. Sometimes they learn and sometimes they mess up. Does that sound familiar to you? It sure does to me! We have already heard Jesus tell His disciples that He will be killed and then resurrected, and today we hear Him repeat that, because it seems the disciples didn't get it the first time. Let's begin by reading from Mark chapter 9, beginning in verse 30 from the New Living Translation, where it is emphasized that Jesus was not holding back this important information from His disciples…in fact, He was trying to block out all distractions so that they would really hear what He was saying… 30 Leaving that region, they traveled through Galilee. Jesus didn't want anyone to know he was there, 31 for he wanted to spend more time with his disciples and teach them. He said to them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed into the hands of his enemies. He will be killed, but three days later he will rise from the dead.” Then Mark records… 32 They didn't understand what he was saying, however, and they were afraid to ask him It seems each of the gospel writers remembering this event reports from His own personal point of view. Luke agrees that the disciples were afraid, but he records… …they didn't know what he meant. Its significance was hidden from them, so they couldn't understand it, and they were afraid to ask him about it. While Matthew records simply… …the disciples were filled with grief. We all have different reactions and emotions associated with truth and events, don't we? Emotions aren't wrong. Emotions just are. They are beautiful, devastating, painful, and exhilarating. Emotions are complex, and sometimes difficult to understand. Emotions aren't righteous or sinful. Though what we do in response to our emotions CAN be righteous or sinful. So God calls us to process – to go to Him seeking wisdom. He wants us to step away from the noise and spend time with Him, just as He did with His disciples. Proverbs 3:5 tells us to trust in the LORD, and to not lean on our OWN understanding. Psalm 37:7-8 tells us to be still in the presence of the Lord and control our anger, which, uncontrolled can lead to harm. In this day filled with issues and strife – and social media – being still in God's presence and trusting His control is something we should each do every day. We have the ability to choose our actions despite our emotions and what is happening around us. At times, God calls us to step out and speak with wisdom and care; and to do so we may need to push beyond our fear. Other times, God calls us to be silent; and to do that we may have to overcome our anger and trust God's control of the situation. Just like the disciples, devout Christians will experience different emotions triggered by the same situation. This may be even more true when it comes to topics that are headlining the news today. Let's not forget, even as our emotions rise, that God calls us first to be still in His presence, to ask for His wisdom, to listen to His words, and then, above all, to react in love. Matthew 17:22 continues… 24 On their arrival in Capernaum, the collectors of the Temple tax[a] came to Peter and asked him, “Doesn't your teacher pay the Temple tax?” 25 “Yes, he does,” Peter replied. Then he went into the house. The temple tax was a bit controversial. Moses originally ordered this tax as is recorded in Exodus 30:11-16, but the controversy was whether this tax was to be paid every year or once during a man's lifetime, and who was exempt from paying – namely the rabbis and the priests. Different groups followed different teachings on the matter. So the collector may have been not just trying to collect the tax, but trying to entrap Jesus, to see what He claimed about Himself and where His loyalties lied. Peter replied, ‘Yes, my teacher pays the tax.' What Peter really knew to be true regarding Jesus and the tax is up for debate, but it seems he answered without thinking or without having complete knowledge or perhaps to keep Jesus from being entrapped. What I love here is that Jesus didn't call out Peter. Although we don't understand Peter's heart, we can be sure that Jesus did – and Jesus COULD have called Peter out for not being truthful, whatever the reason. But instead, Jesus approached Peter with a question…verse 25… But before he had a chance to speak, Jesus asked him, “What do you think, Peter?[b] Do kings tax their own people or the people they have conquered?[c]” 26 “They tax the people they have conquered,” Peter replied. “Well, then,” Jesus said, “the citizens are free! Other translations record this question as “From whom do the kings of the earth take customs or taxes, from their sons or from strangers?” To which Peter replies, “From strangers.” And Jesus makes the point that sons do not pay taxes. Whether the analogy is about sons or citizens, it is clear that by this analogy, Jesus is proclaiming Himself as God, saying that the temple tax due to God, need not be paid by God Himself. But then Jesus says something we should all take to heart…verse 27…  27 However, we don't want to offend them, Jesus…the Son of God…did something He was NOT required to do by any law, because He didn't want to offend someone else, causing an issue that could detract from His purpose. My mom used to warn me to not make a mountain out of a molehill. There is a once-popular book titled, Don't Sweat the Small Stuff. The devil wants to put stumbling blocks in our way to keep us from walking in the purpose that God has for us. He wants us to fixate on things that are unimportant to keep us from getting to the important work that God has ordained for us. Sometimes, it can be difficult to distinguish between the mountain and the molehill – that is, again, where we need to be still in God's presence, and ask Him for wisdom. And then we are to trust Him as He leads, guides, and provides, because He always will! Jesus gave Peter instructions… …go down to the lake and throw in a line. Open the mouth of the first fish you catch, and you will find a large silver coin.[d] Take it and pay the tax for both of us.” Ok…let's break this down... First…Jesus, the Son of God, who didn't NEED to pay the temple tax, didn't even have a half-shekel – equal to about 2 day's wages – to pay the tax. BUT He didn't want to take anyone's focus off what He was there to do, so He provided for Peter, who spoke out of turn, to FIND a coin that would be the perfect amount to pay both their tax. So…Jesus tells Peter to use His gifting in a most unusual way. Remember, Peter was a fisherman. He knew that the best way to catch fish was with a net, which could bring in MANY fish at one time. But instead, Jesus tells Peter to use a line and a hook – cutting out Peter's chances of catching many fish, and giving him the opportunity to catch just one, single fish. Then, Jesus tells Peter to take that fish, open it's mouth, and there will be a silver coin. The perfect payment for the tax for both men. Now, we know that God is sovereign. He has complete control over all creation. So think about the plan that He had already been working on. Someone had to earn that coin. Then, he had to be walking by the water or fishing on the water when he lost that coin. He may have jumped after it – it was 4 days' wages. But somehow, the silver coin sunk to the bottom where the light could no longer glisten off it. THEN, a fish had to come along – likely a bottom-feeder, hungry and looking for food, and scoop up the coin with its mouth, but not swallow it. Somehow it got stuck in his mouth. It wouldn't go down and it wouldn't come out. I wonder how long the fish swam around with the coin in it's mouth. But then, this bottom-feeder saw a small morsel, a piece of bait in reality, floating in the water, and decided it would try a little something different. So the bottom-feeder goes after the floating delicacy, opening its mouth wide enough to be snagged by the hook, but not lose the coin. And then Peter pulls up the line, and wallah! Jesus made Peter's unthinking response – Yes, my teacher pays the tax – truth. This is a short Bible story that teaches us so much! It teaches us that… Jesus loves us! He goes out of His way to make the absurd possible for our protection. Jesus guides us! He will always give us the direction we should go, if we are still in His presence and ask for His wisdom. Jesus provides for us! He supplies for our needs, sometimes in the most unexpected ways. But often, He asks us to use our gifts and abilities, just like He asked Peter, the fisherman, to fish. Jesus wants us to trust Him! We don't need to make a scene with every grievance we encounter. We don't need to worry and take control of all that is going on around us. Instead, we can rest in God's presence, asking for His wisdom about what we are called to do, and then focusing on making intentional choices that will not offend others and inadvertently push THEM off the path that God has created for them. God has a plan and purpose for your life – and Jesus is with you every step of the way to ensure that you arrive safely. Your responsibility is to listen to Him, to trust His wisdom, protection, and provision, and to obey obediently. God doesn't do things haphazardly – but He orchestrates all creation to degree that we can't even begin to imagine! Let's pray… Dear Heavenly Father – we submit our plans to you, knowing that YOUR plans are better. And God we thank you! Although we make mistakes along the way, you never stop leading us and instructing us in the way we should go. We thank you that you have been working since the beginning of time to bring all your children home, and we thank you that you are allowing us to partner with you in that endeavor. Give us the courage to obediently walk where you call us and do EXACTLY what you call us to do – trusting your care, provision, protection, wisdom, and guidance. In Jesus' name, I pray. Amen.
