Anette visits with her friend, Dr. Aaron Pan, Executive Director of the Museum of Texas Tech University and Associate Professor in Practice, Museum of Texas Tech University. With a focus on lifelong learning, Aaron discusses areas of interest from paleobotany to kleptoparasitic bees, and all things museum-related as well.Dr. Pan received his Bachelors of Arts degree in Creative Studies – Biology Emphasis with high honors from the University of California Santa Barbara in 2002 and his Doctor of Philosophy in Geology – Paleobotany Emphasis from the Roy M. Huffington Department of Earth Sciences at Southern Methodist University in Dallas, Texas in 2007. Dr. Pan served as the Curator of Science at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History from 2008 – 2012 and as the Executive Director of the Don Harrington Discovery Center in Amarillo, Texas from 2012 – 2020. Dr. Pan joined the Museum of Texas Tech University as its executive director in May 2020. Dr. Pan actively conducts research in paleobotany, entomology, and malacology and publishes scientific articles on prehistoric African forest plants, abalone systematics, velvet ant mimicry and evolution, and the ecology, behavior, and conservation of native bees. Pan is also a research associate at the Botanical Research Institute of Texas(B.R.I.T.) in Fort Worth (BRIT), serves on the Texas Tech University Black Cultural Center’s Advisory Committee, Texas Tech Public Media Community Advisory Board, and Board of Trustees of Cal Farley’s Boys Ranch.

(30 ml) fresh rosemary leaves  2 cups (500 ml) finely chopped fresh figs 3 Tbsp. (45 ml) Ball Classic Pectin  2 Tbsp. (30 ml) bottled lemon juice  2 1/2 cups (625 ml) sugar Steps Bring wine and rosemary to a simmer in a small stainless steel or enameled saucepan. Turn off heat; cover and steep 30 minutes. Pour wine through a fine wire-mesh strainer into a 4-qt.(4-L) stainless steel or enameled saucepan. Discard rosemary. Stir in figs, pectin, and lemon juice. Bring mixture to a full rolling boil that cannot be stirred down, over high heat, stirring constantly. Add sugar, stirring to dissolve. Return mixture to a full rolling boil. Boil hard 1 minutes stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Skim foam, if necessary. Ladle hot jam into a hot jar, leaving 1/4-inch (.5-cm) headspace. Remove air bubbles. Wipe jar rim. Center lid on jar. Apply band, and adjust to fingertip-tight. Place Jar in boiling-water canner. Repeat until all Jars are filled. Process jars 10 minutes, adjusting for altitude. A native of Fort Worth, she chose to stay close to home by studying art at Texas Christian University. Nancy first gained recognition in her hometown through a series of art classes that she taught at the Fort Worth Museum of Science and History which included her production of 3D work. But Nancy is probably best known for her large-scale oil paintings of candid Fort Worth society scenes. These paintings can be found in exhibitions at home and worldwide, such as the Florence Biennale, as well as being a popular choice in private and corporate collections. Nancy is represented in Fort Worth by Artspace 111.I recently sat down with Nancy at her home studio where we discussed growing up in Fort Worth, the disappearance of small town Texas culture, the upkeep of her four acres, going to parties, experiencing loss and what to do with thirty years of photographs.
