As a lifelong geek I will preach the good word of all things niche and nerdy to anyone who will listen and even some who won't. I'm the kind of person who strongly believes that a good story can change your entire outlook, that a well-crafted game can be a balm for the soul, and that superheroes can save you even if they aren't real.  But there are a lot of aspects of geek culture that are still seen as far-fetched, laughable, even dangerous by authority figures, especially when it comes to the field of mental health. Geeks, gamers, and other folks with insular or niche interests oftentimes have to spend time explaining fandom dynamics or the concept of internet friendships or why they spend so much time reading and writing fan fiction to people who aren't always welcoming.  Enter Dr. Megan Connell, Licensed Psychologist & Therapeutic Dungeon Master with over a decade of experience in the field. She's an incredibly accomplished therapist, educator, author, and content creator in her own right who has turned her attention to creating a safe space for geeks who want to get serious about their mental health in a space tailored for them. She is the author of the upcoming book Tabletop Role-Playing Therapy.  She is a board member for Geek Therapeutics a training platform that develops professional programs teaching the inclusion of games in clinical practices. Have you ever felt the thrill of rolling a 20-sided die? If you're in the general demographic of a Behavioral Observations listener, I'd guess probably not. However, it may not surprise you to learn that being the cosmically uncoordinated and socially challenged kid of the 80s, I certainly have.  Which is why I jumped at the chance to speak with Session 190 guest, Rob Harvey, about how he uses role-playing games, like Dungeons and Dragons (D&D for short), to teach social skills to his clients.  If you're not familiar with D&D, don't worry. We go over what that is in this podcast. Rob also goes on to explain that by playing these games, clients get to practice skills like speech prosody, turn taking, teamwork, conflict resolution, perspective taking, and so much more. So even if you are not interested in role-playing games in principle, you might want to check this show out nonetheless because of the benefits it may have for the people you work with.  I would also offer that this type of activity seems like an unexplored area for research. Rob shared some of the anecdotal outcomes he's seen in this podcast, and it just made me think of how great it would be to see if these findings could be scientifically investigated. As far as numbers go, Rob has some data that suggest over 90% of his clients go on to play these games with peers outside of therapeutic hours, so it definitely seems like something is there.  Here links to things we discussed: Rob's grad program and BOP Sponsor (and no, we didn't plan this), University of Cincinnati Online. I'm happy to announce the start of my PAX East Online coverage! I had the wonderful opportunity to interview Dr. Anthony Bean and discuss his offerings over at Geek Therapeutics! A site that allows people to come and make their lives better through therapy alongside the connections we can make utilizing pop culture. Here, Anthony gives a full rundown on what it's like being a consultant for the company, the many certifications they offer, plus a slew of other outlets. This includes podcasting, a line of psychology books as well as teases into future Kickstarter offerings. You'll also get a look inside Anthony's favorite game series AND a look into my own personal struggles with therapy, why Nightwing means so much to me as a character and how I relate to him! This was an insightful conversation and I hope it helps you all in some way, shape, or form.
