May has broken down many other barriers throughout her career and continues to do so with her production company, Lotus Media House, which currently produces “Shoes Off Inside”, a vodcast (video-podcast) that explores the API experience and beyond with hosts May Lee as well as veteran actors Kelly Hu and Tamlyn Tomita. May's work in API activism and education was recognized by Forbes when she was named one of Forbes 50 over 50 women leading the way in impact in 2021. Along with her media projects and activism, May served as adjunct instructor at USC's Annenberg School of Communication and Journalism and Artistic Assistant Professor at Dodge College of Film and Media Arts at Chapman University. May's many other previous professional roles include LA-based correspondent and host for international network CGTN-America, talk show host for Oxygen Media founded by Oprah Winfrey, and lead anchor for CNBC in Singapore. May is a graduate of Mills College in Oakland, CA where she attained her BA in communications. Voices of Japanese American Incarceration during World War II, is recognized as a leading scholar and educator on our country's unjustified wartime imprisonment of more than 125,000 persons of Japanese ancestry, solely on the basis of their race. A descendant of incarcerees, she draws upon personal and community stories to convey the continuing relevance of this tragic episode in our history to contemporary issues of racial identity, immigration, and citizenship, and today's threat to civil liberties. Since 2011, Emily's Entourage has awarded millions of dollars in research grants, launched a now-acquired CF gene therapy company, developed a patient registry and clinical trial matchmaking program to accelerate clinical trial recruitment, and led worldwide efforts to drive high-impact research and drug development. The organization has been featured in media outlets, including New York Times, STAT, CNN, Yahoo, AOL, People, The Philadelphia Inquirer and more. Emily has a master's degree in bioethics and certification in clinical ethics mediation from the University of Pennsylvania, where she also completed her undergraduate degree. At the University of Southern California, student protesters set up an encampment at Alumni Park for the second time over the weekend after their first one was broken up by law enforcement last week. Ninety-three people were arrested. The campus remains closed to the public and access to the campus is limited to those with a valid campus ID. The university is also facing criticism from various groups of faculty including from the Annenberg School for Communication and Journalism and the Department of Gender & Sexuality Studies for their handling of the student protests. Booker Prize-nominated author C Pam Zhang and UCLA professor and MacArthur Fellow Safiya Noble have withdrawn as speakers of USC's Rossier School of Education satellite commencement ceremony. President Carol Folt and Provost Andrew Guzman are set to attend the school's Academic Executive Board meeting on Wednesday where some faculty are calling on the senate to censure Folt and Guzman for their handling of the valedictorian speech and pro-Palestinian in-camp demonstration. Giving voice to the Trans community, TJ Billard shares their new book Voices For Transgender Equality: Making Change In The Network Public Sphere. Grant Scholar in the School of Communication and, by courtesy, the Department of Sociology at Northwestern University, where they are affiliated with the Institute for Policy Research and the Institute for Sexual and Gender Minority Health and Wellbeing. Outside of Northwestern, they are the founding Executive Director of the Center for Applied Transgender Studies in Chicago—the leading academic organization dedicated to scholarship on the social, cultural, and political conditions of transgender life—and Editor-in-Chief of the Center's flagship journal, the Bulletin of Applied Transgender Studies. Billard's research spans political communication, the sociology of social movements, and transgender studies, with a primary focus on the relationship between media and transgender politics in the United States and United Kingdom. They also conduct research on typography and graphic design, with an emphasis on the role of design in political branding. Billard is the author of Voices for Transgender Equality: Making Change in the Networked Public Sphere (Oxford University Press, 2024). The book offers an insider's view into transgender activism during the first two years of the Trump administration, during which trans people were thrust onto the center stage of US politics. Drawing on extensive on-the-ground observation at the National Center for Transgender Equality, Voices for Transgender Equality shows how these activists developed an unlikely blend of online and offline strategies to saturate a diverse ecology of national news outlets, local and community media outlets across the country, and both public and private conversations across multiple social media platforms with voices in support of their cause. Billard is also co-editor (with Silvio Waisbord) of Public Scholarship in Communication Studies (University of Illinois Press, 2024). Taking the position that “public scholarship” should not prioritize publicity for scholars and their ideas, but rather should prioritize serving the public good in ways that go beyond conventional scholarly work, the volume brings together an all-star cast of public scholars to offer both critical meditations on the role and importance of public scholarship in communication studies' various subfields and “how-to” guides for enacting public scholarship. Billard's current research project, tentatively titled Cisinformed: Disinformation and the Media War on Transgender Rights, focuses on the central role of misinformation in anti-transgender movements' political strategies in both the US and UK, why these strategies work, and what can be done to curb misinformation's influence on policy and public opinion. This research is supported by a five-year award from the William T. Grant Foundation's Scholars program. In 1988, Noam Chomsky and Edward S. Many of our kids spend a LOT of time engaging on screens and with technology, and I don't know about you, but for me it feels like this is an ever-changing, and fast-changing landscape, and one that can be hard to stay on top of. Whether we're talking about assistive technology, videos, games, or social media, these forms of media continue to offer new ways of interacting, developing relationships, and even exploring identity, and this has added to the complexity of raising neurodivergent kiddos. So I invited Dr. Meryl Alper, a researcher on the social and cultural implications of communication technologies with a focus on disability, digital media, and children and families' tech use to join me to talk about how we should be thinking about our kids' relationship with screens and tech. I reached out to Meryl after reading her new book, Kids Across the Spectrums: Growing Up Autistic in the Digital Age, which explores the often-misunderstood technology practices of young autistic people, as well as what it means to be “social” in a hypermediated society. So that's what we get into: the factors that influence a child's relation to media, how digital media is creating spaces for kids to develop their identities online, and what we – parents, schools – should be doing to better educate kids on safely interacting with online communities and new technologies. We also talked about fandoms and how they have become a part of identity and belonging development, and why every parent needs to spend time understanding how their children are using and consuming media.
