This month in our Bible Q&A we tackled your questions on the books of Genesis and Exodus. You can jump through this episode by using the time makers below: (1:06) Genesis 42:36Why did Jacob say "you have deprived me of my children" are they not his children?  (2:42) Genesis 42:38Did Joseph not have 11 brothers, why would Jacob say that Benjamin is the only one left? (14:23) Exodus 4:24 Why would the LORD go to kill Moses when he had asked him to help free his people from Egypt? (20:43) Exodus 7:22 / 8:7 How did the Egyptians manage the same miraculous signs as God? (27:10) Exodus 10:12Aaron seems to have been the one using the staff until now. Here is seems to be Moses. Why? Is this because Moses now believes himself, or that God is no longer angry with him? (38:31) Exodus 22:2-3Why does the sunrise make a difference? (43:14) Exodus 24:9-11What does it mean that the leaders saw God when Exodus 33:20 says no one can see Gods face and live, and 1 John 4:2 it says that no one has ever seen God? (54:51) Exodus 29:10-19What is the significance of the laying hands on the head of the sacrifice? (1:05:41) Exodus 31:1-5 Why is there a high standard for who makes things for the tabernacle? Why only those God has chosen by name and filled with His Spirit? Is it important to have God's person in the God's work?

It is common for new Christians, or newly serious Christians, who want to deepen their relationship with scripture to set out to “read the whole Bible cover-to-cover.” This practice, while well-intentioned, can lead to one of two problems. First, many Christians make it through the exciting, narrative story of Genesis and Exodus before losing interest somewhere in the legal sections of the Pentateuch. This is unsurprising. As a lawyer familiar with legal treatises and codes, Ian can tell you that even the best jurist usually does not intend his treatise to be a pleasant cover-to-cover reading experience even for other lawyers, let alone the lay reader. A legal treatise is designed to be consulted, not read like a novel. Because all legal treatises are boring to read, Christians at first riveted by the generational drama of Jacob, Joseph, and Moses usually founder in discouragement when they collide with Mosaic dietary and agricultural laws. Sadly, this prevents many Christians from ever truly discovering biblical narratives that are as compelling and rich as Genesis-Exodus—including Judges and the books of Samuel, Kings, and Chronicles. Secondly, some Christians who do succeed in making it through the Bible cover-to-cover do not seem to profit much by the experience. I'm reminded here of the Christian musician Shannon Low, who—as I recall the story, at least—publicly repudiated his faith after a skeptic directed him to read the story of Elisha killing 42 young boys in 2 Kings 2. Low recalled that he was shocked to read the story despite having previously “read the whole Bible.” “How did I miss this?,” he asked himself. I'd wager that Low was a “cover-to-cover” Bible reader. The fundamental problem is that some Christians—informed by a naïve oversimplification of sola scriptura—implicitly assume that the various books of the Bible were directly ordered by God into a coherent structure, that all components of the Bible are intended to be understood by the ordinary person with no external assistance, and that the Bible as a whole is meant to be read in a sequential narrative form. These assumptions have no basis in the Bible itself and little basis in church history. They instead seem to reflect the creeping, unconscious influence of Islam's theology of the Quran. Unlike Christians, Muslims have historically held that their central text was dictated verbatim by an angel and existed as a coherent, single text from eternity past. In contrast, Christians since before the time of Jerome have understood the Bible as a library of individual books, in different genres, created in a variety of ways and in different historical circumstances. The precise scope of the canon has always been considered an appropriate subject for inspired councilor deliberation and/or scholarly debate. Read the full article here.

Welcome to A Year in the Bible with Daily Grace bonus episode for Genesis and Exodus! Throughout the year, we will provide bonus episodes to dig a little deeper into important theological concepts and themes. Today we're talking about polygamy in the Bible. Polygamy was mentioned in many places in Genesis and Exodus. Does that mean God supports polygamy? Let's discuss this together in this bonus episode.   Scripture mentioned in this episode:    Genesis 2:18, 20-25 Mark 10:2-9 Matthew 5:27-29 Ephesians 5:22-33   Notes for Genesis and Exodus episodes:   Lot is accidentally mentioned to be Abram's brother instead of his nephew. (Genesis 13-15: 00:46) Joseph's brothers thought that he did not understand them due to the presence of the interpreter, but Joseph understood because he spoke the same language. (Genesis 40-42: 04:38) Judah promises to take responsibility for bringing Benjamin back, not Simeon. (Genesis 43-46: 00:51) Joseph doesn't explain how the money ended up in the brothers' sacks, but his steward does. (Genesis 43-46: 01:32) God gave Moses three miraculous signs. The third sign, turning water into blood, had not been performed yet but is mentioned if they refuse to listen to Moses. (Exodus 4-6: 01:07)  God would lead them out of Egypt, not Israel. (Exodus 4-6: 03:49) God displays His wrath against anything that keeps us from a relationship with Him. (Exodus 7-9: 04:12) We see God finalize the plagues in Egypt, preserve His people, and usher them safely out of slavery. (Exodus 10-12: 00:36) God was with His people, guiding them by a pillar of cloud in the daytime rather than smoke. (Exodus 13-15: 01:12, 04:13) Pharaoh chased after the Israelites, not the Egyptians. (Exodus 13-15: 01:26) The lampstand had six branches, not seven. (Exodus 25-27: 02:31) The veil of the temple, not the tabernacle, was torn when Jesus died on the cross. (Exodus 25-27: 03:52) Only Bezalel received the Holy Spirit, but both Bezalel and Oholiab were given the ability to teach and skillfully create. (Exodus 34-36: 02:40)   Visit The Daily Grace Co for the Story of Redemption bundle and for more beautiful products that will equip you on your journey to knowing and loving God more. Recorded in 2000. Fr. Baker's Theology of the Old Testament brings the student along a tour of the books of the Old Testament in the order they are found in the Bible.  From Creation and the early formation of Judaism to the Minor Prophets and the preservation of the Covenant, Fr. Baker glides through the colorful history of God's Chosen people.  His video lectures identify the recurring themes of promises, sin, forgiveness, and fulfillment, and the overall story of God's love for his people.  The videos alone provide a useful review of the subject, but they can also be enhanced by a study of the additional materials included on the Catholic Thinkers website. catholicthinkers.org https://youtu.be/rVIJ1Frn340

Books and Their MessagesThe largest units in Scripture are books of the Bible. Biblical bookswere written for different purposes and in different settings. Someserved as prophetic messages; others were compilations, such as thePsalms. There are historical books, such as 1 and 2 Kings, and thereare letters to various churches, such as those written by Paul and others. As we seek to understand a book’s meaning and message, it is importantto begin with authorship and setting. Many books of the Bible are assignedauthors. The first five books of the Old Testament are identified as having beenauthored by Moses (Josh. 8:31, 32; 1 Kings 2:3; 2 Kings 14:6; 2 Kings 21:8;Ezra 6:18; Neh. 13:1; Dan. 9:11–13; Mal. 4:4). This is confirmed by Jesus(Mark 12:26; John 5:46, 47; John 7:19) and the apostles (Acts 3:22, Rom.10:5). In other cases, some biblical authors are not identified. (For example, the authors of the books Esther and Ruth as well as the authors of many of thehistorical books, such as Samuel and Chronicles, are not identified.)Read Genesis 15:1–5 and Genesis 22:17, 18. What significance is it tous that Moses wrote the book of Genesis?__________________________________________________________________________________________________________Exodus through Deuteronomy were written by Moses after, ofcourse, the Exodus. But because Genesis is foundational as a history ofGod’s acts from Creation to the patriarchal period, it is logical that thisbook was written before the Exodus.“As the years rolled on, and he [Moses] wandered with his flocks insolitary places, pondering upon the oppressed condition of his people,he recounted the dealings of God with his fathers and the promisesthat were the heritage of the chosen nation, and his prayers for Israelascended by day and by night. Heavenly angels shed their light aroundhim. Here, under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit, he wrote the bookof Genesis.”—Ellen G. White, Patriarchs and Prophets, p. 251.With the book of Genesis, we are told not only about our origins butabout the plan of salvation, or the means by which God will redeemfallen humanity. This plan becomes even more apparent with the covenantthat God makes with Abraham, which involves His promise to establishthrough him a great nation to be made up of “ ‘descendants as the stars ofthe heaven and as the sand which is on the seashore’ ” (Gen. 22:17, NKJV).What other great truths have we been taught through the bookof Genesis, truths about which we might otherwise not know? What does this teach us about how important the Word of Godis to our faith?
