This week, in a continuation of our mini-series examining problematic texts of the Bible, we look closer at Psalm 88 - the only psalm where the psalmist does not make a turn from sorrow to praise. Join Pastor Arik as he looks at the silence of God as an example of sacred care, and how sometimes the best way to support another in their grief is to be a listening ear.
The Bible bubbles to the service of all we do publically and privately - why is that? Isn't it outdated and unreliable? Why are we always banging on about the Bible????

Nick Vujicic, born without arms and legs, faced obstacles few could fathom. Less than 10 people worldwide have this condition. He's now a person of faith, and one of the top motivational speakers in the world. Oh—and he's married with four kids. Oh—and he graduated from college with a double major. Nick, now 35, was born with a condition known as Tetra Amelia syndrome. Not surprisingly, he faced bullying as a kid, and it continued into adolescence. Then one day his mother gave him a newspaper article to read. It was about a man coping with severe disability. The story touched Nick, and he began going deeper into his faith. Not surprisingly, as a teen, Nick constantly wondered why he was so different from everyone else. There seemed to be no purpose to his life, and depression was a very real threat. He credits his faith as the sole reason he overcame his condition. Today, he's the founder of the ministry Life Without Limbs, and he also launched a motivational speaking company. With global travel and communications taking Nick's speaking opportunities to new levels, he is absolutely passionate to share his faith. As he says—if God can use a man without arms and legs to be his hands and feet, then He will certainly use any willing heart. Who wouldn't be inspired by such a person? Nick's life perfectly fits Ephesians 2:10, which says, “For we are God's handiwork, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.” Few of us endure something as radical as what Nick has been through. His limitations, while rare and extreme, have been supernatural inspiration for millions. How would you react to that severe kind of testing? If you focus on what you don't have, or on what you wish you were, you are missing a direct and customized blessing for you from God. Maybe you have an obstacle, or several. You feel stuck in life. And that's fine…for a little while. If nothing else, reflect on the story of Nick Vujicic, and then read one of the most beautiful verses in all the Bible: Psalm 139:14; it says, “I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Your works are wonderful. I know that full well.” You are wonderfully made, perfectly suited for the purpose God has always had in store for you. Let's pray. Lord, how many times do we wish we were someone else, or in different circumstances? Sometimes we just aren't comfortable with who we are, but your word tells us we have freedom in Christ. And as the psalmist says, we are fearfully and wonderfully made. Each of us uniquely made to do your will on this earth. Help us to keep this truth in front of our face all the time. In Jesus' name, amen. Change your shirt, and you can change the world! Save 15% Off your entire purchase of faith-based apparel + gifts at Kerusso.com with code KDD15.

A man named Aleph wrote the longest chapter in the Bible: Psalm 119. In this psalm, he makes a very bold statement about God. “You are good, and what you do is good; teach me your decrees” (Psalm 119:68). He said unequivocally, “God is good and God does good.” So why should we believe him? I can tell you in one simple sentence. There is good because God is good. On the other hand, let me put that negatively. If there is no God, there is no good. With that in mind, I want to give you some reasons why we should believe in Good God Almighty.

Hello there, welcome to AWWF the podcast. On this episode we are reading the book of Psalms chapter 1 and 2. Join us daily in the month of January as we read through the entire book of 150 chapters. Did you know...- The Book of Psalms is sometimes called “Tehillim” which means “Book of Praises” or “Bible within the Bible” because it covers all the major themes of the Bible story.-Jesus Himself used more quotes from the book of Psalms than from any other book.- King David wrote approximately 73 of the 150 Psalms.- The key word in the Psalms is “praise” which appears 211 times- The word “Selah” appears 71 times throughout the Psalms. The most recognized meaning of the Hebrew word Selah is “forever.” It is often interpreted as an instruction calling for a break in the singing of the Psalm, or to pause and calmly think about what you have read; The Book of Psalms may aptly be summarized by 5 key Words:a) Praise: The Psalmist worships, extols, and with heart-felt gratitude, thanks the sovereign God of Israel for His Person, His Word, and His mighty works in regard to both creation and redemption;b) Prophecy: The Psalmist often writes of the coming Messiah, foretelling His zeal, suffering, death, resurrection, ascension, high priestly work, and coming millennial reign;c) Pain: The Psalmist describes in graphic fashion his personal doubts, fears, pain, and problems;d) Petition: The Psalmist offers up many requests, crying out for relief, forgiveness, reassurance, direction, protection and strength;e) Poetry: The Psalmist pens his words in poetic fashion meant to be sung.Info credited to https://psalm91.com/2020/08/10/incredible-facts-about-the-book-of-psalms/
Pastor Nolan kicks off the new year at First Methodist with a new sermon series focusing on the some of the most familiar words in the Bible - Psalm 23.
“I like big Bibles, and I cannot lie!” This is the opening line from a viral comedy song / music video created by our Lead Minister, Dan Smith (Google “Baby Got Book X”). This internet banger is all about a dude who loves the Scriptures and is searching for a godly lady who feels the same way. Psalm 119 was also written by a poet who absolutely “delighted” in God's Word. It's the longest psalm (and chapter) in the entire Bible, and it's jam-packed with spiritual nuggets about developing a growing relationship with God. From basics to advanced tips, these messages are a great way to start the New Year! #ILikeBigBibles
Spiritual formation, becoming more like Jesus Christ in thought and deed, requires a renewed mind (Romans 12:2) that avoids worldliness (1 John 2:15-17) and pursues godliness (Matthew 5:1-18). Our sanctification through the Holy Spirit requires an ongoing dependency on God wherein we grow in the knowledge of God, how his Kingdom operates (Matthew 6:33), ourselves (James 1:25), and our place in the church (1 Corinthians 12-14) and broader culture (1 Chronicles 12:32). To this end, here are some principles and recommendations in how to “take every thought captive to obey Christ” 2 Corinthians 10:3-5). Remain faithful in the reading and studying of the Bible (Psalm 119; 2 Timothy 3:14-17). Consider using one or more study Bibles. Discern your calling as a Christian if you have not done so. These men are identified with the 12 Tribes. There are 12 stones on the ephod of the High Priest. Messianic Jews that convert today and believe will be caught up in the rapture along with the rest of the Church, so I don't think they are the hidden ones. What if somehow God gives life to the stones in the Jordan River to bring forth the 144,000? If God can make Adam of the dust of the earth, He can give life to stones. Could these lively stones be brought forth when tribulation begins and after the rapture? The 144K are sealed and physically identifiable: perhaps they are ready to be born in a day to start the new nation of Israel.

I disagree. This is clearly to me a picture of their resurrection. When Christ spoke to Nicodemus, He was referring to Ezekiel 37 in connection to be born of the Spirit or born again. This is where I feel we miss the boat and apply the formation of Israel in 1948 to the first resurrection Jesus speaks of here. I do not believe in Replacement Theology; God will keep His promises to Israel. The question is, Who is that nation?

I. Meta-Apologetics A. Apologetics: Defending the Christian worldview as objectively true, compellingly rational, and existentially pertinent to the whole of life (1 Peter 3:15-6; Jude 3) B. Meta-apologetics: thoughts about how to engage in apologetics, strategies and values. II. The Christian Apologist's Moral Compass A. All are called to check their moral motives and develop godly characterI strike a blow to my body and make it my slave so that after I have preached to others, I myself will not be disqualified for the prize (2 Corinthians 9:27).Watch your life and doctrine closely. Persevere in them, because if you do, you will save both yourself and your hearers (1 Timothy 4:16).B. Yearn for Kingdom ministry (Matthew 6:33) C. Put yourself second to the ministry; do not promote your brand or ego! Let others compliment you. III. Godly Character A. Humility, not self-promotionThis is a faithful saying, and worthy of all acceptation, that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners; of whom I am chief (1 Timothy 1:5; KJV; see also 1 Corinthians 15:9). B. Show love, not strifeAnd the Lord's servant must not be quarrelsome but must be kind to everyone, able to teach, not resentful. Opponents must be gently instructed, in the hope that God will grant them repentance leading them to a knowledge of the truth, and that they will come to their senses and escape from the trap of the devil, who has taken them captive to do his will (2 Timothy 2:24-26).C. Dependence on the Spirit moment-by-moment (John 15; Acts 1:8). See Francis Schaeffer, True Spirituality. D. Intellectual preparation for apologetics 1. Know your Bible (Psalm 119; 2 Timothy 3:16) and biblical interpretation (2 Peter 3:16) 2. Know biblical and systematic theology to ground your worldview (Acts 17:10-11) 3. Know logic and logical fallacies; how to argue carefully and assess arguments carefully (2 Corinthians 10:3-5) 4. Know your own culture: worldviews and means of communication (technologies) Issachar, men who understood the times and knew what Israel should do (1 Chronicles 12:32). 5. Be above reproach in citing your sources in speaking and writing (Exodus 20:15) 6. Behind all these six principles is the importance of being studious, a good scholar Not only was the Teacher wise, but he also imparted knowledge to the people. He pondered and searched out and set in order many proverbs. The Teacher searched to find just the right words, and what he wrote was upright and true (Ecclesiastes 12:9-10; see 1:17; 8:9, 16).I myself have carefully investigated everything from the beginning, I too decided to write an orderly account for you, most excellent Theophilus, so that you may know the certainty of the things you have been taught (Luke 1:3-4; see also John 21:24). IV. Opportunity and Uncertainty in Apologetics A. Break new ground! It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else's foundation—Romans 15:20). B. Ecclesiastes 11:1-6 Cast your bread upon the waters,For you will find it after many days.Give a serving to seven, and also to eight,For you do not know what evil will be on the earth. If the clouds are full of rain,They empty themselves upon the earth; And if a tree falls to the south or the north,In the place where the tree falls, there it shall lie.He who observes the wind will not sow,And he who regards the clouds will not reap.As you do not know what is the way of the wind,[a]Or how the bones grow in the womb of her who is with child,So you do not know the works of God who makes everything. In the morning sow your seed,And in the evening do not withhold your hand; For you do not know which will prosper,Either this or that,Or whether both alike will be good (NKJV). C. Calculate effort in relation to effect and chances of success. D. Embrace unexpected opportunities. 1. Paul at Mars Hill (Acts 16-17): unscheduled mission trip before imposing intellectuals. 2. Paul to Timothy Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine—2 Timothy 4:2 (KJV). V. My Apologetic Surprises, Successes, and Failures A. Surprise: Lecturing at a Baha'i meeting B. Successful attempts 1. Writing On Pascal and On Jesus 2. Doing author events for two of my books at a local bookstore in Denver. Another one flopped (Fire in the Streets). C. Unsuccessful attempts 1. Debate with James K. A. Smith 2. Doing a Buddhist-Christian dialogue at Naropa University (Boulder, CO) 3. Secular publisher for Philosophy in Seven Sentences VI. Attempts, Failures, and Successes before God A. Seek God's Kingdom first, last, and always (Matthew 6:33) B. Remember the audience of a holy God Now all has been heard; here is the conclusion of the matter:Fear God and keep his commandments, for this is the duty of all mankind. For God will bring every deed into judgment, including every hidden thing, whether it is good or evil—Ecclesiastes 12:13-14.Resources1. David is the Old Testament character that is spoken about most in the Bible. He wrote one of the most famous chapters in the Bible (Psalm 23) and is featured in other well-known Bible stories. He is also called “a man after God's own heart.” In this message, however, Timothy “TA” Ateek points out that the most important thing about David is the way he is connected to and foreshadows Jesus Christ.

The difference between the defeat of the old life and the victory of the new life is found in the renewal of our thinking. Ephesians 4:22–24 (ESV) to put off your old self, which belongs to your former manner of life and is corrupt through deceitful desires, 23and to be renewed in the spirit of your minds, 24and to put on the new self, created after the likeness of God in true righteousness and holiness. 1. Why Christian: Finding Faith When You Can't Believe Anymore You see the beauty of God and you can't say no. But you see the messiness of religion and you can't say yes. The awe and wonder of life make it almost impossible not to believe. But the ache and evil of the world make it utterly irrational to believe. Maybe you were promised that Christianity would resolve life's paradoxes and answer your deepest questions, only to discover that it unearthed even deeper and more unanswerable ones, like: Who is Jesus and why did he really come? What is salvation and what are we actually saved from? Who are Christians and why do too many of them seem so un-Christian? What is the Bible and how are we supposed to read it in the modern world? What is the meaning and purpose of life and where is all of this headed? It turns out, Christianity is not a religion of finite answers. Christianity is an ongoing conversation about the infinite possibilities of experiencing God in the beauty and the mess of life, the awe and the ache of the world. If you're inclined to say no to religion, you can still say yes to the conversation. Join us for this provocative new series, “Why Christian”— a generous five-week conversation about how we might still find faith even when we can't believe anymore. Jan 15: Why Christianity? Jan 22: Why Jesus? Jan 29 Why Church? Feb 5: Why the Bible? Feb 12: Why Hope?
Proverbs 13:12 Hope deferred makes the heart sick (weak), but a longing fulfilled is a tree of life. Hope deferred refers to hope that is delayed! Have you ever felt like your hope is delayed or that the promise is delayed? Hope in Hebrew means to wait it out, staying the course as long as it takes. You are waiting for God's outcome with faith-hoping and triumphant endurance, looking to the end. I love what David said about hope Psalm 27:13-14 New King James Version 13 I would have lost heart, unless I had believed That I would see the goodness of the Lord In the land of the living. 14 Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, And He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord! Wait in Hebrew: ) tied to its expectation Say this with me, “I am tied to my hope and my hope is tied to me! We all know what Jeremiah 29:11 says, but it is so powerful. God wants to give us a future full of HOPE! Have you ever prayed this prayer before? Psalm 42:11 Why, my soul, are you downcast (despair)? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God. GOD KNOWS I HAVE!! Despair in Hebrew: shāḥaḥ – bowed down, crouched in submission, Disturb in Hebrew: hāmâ –, growl, roar; (figuratively) be in commotion ("deeply stirred"), implying boisterous, turbulent behavior like howling, mourning, tumultuous wailing ("roaring"); the rush and roar of a throng. BUT DAVID HAD A “YET PRAISE” Yet Praise Yet: ʽôd̠ –continuance ("still persisting") referring to "continuance and persistence. . . for still expressing addition or repetition It's translated as moreover, besides, still, yet, again. In each case the core-idea is continuance (persistence). It literally means do again – "keep something going in a cycle" which persists or still happens ("yet," “more"). Praise: yād̠â – to cast, throw on-target (hit the "bull's-eye") – acknowledge as "spot on"; grateful recognition which includes thanksgiving, confession, or praise – Yodah To lift or throw arms upward in praise and surrender. The word yodah is a gesture of throwing out one's arms in celebration or confession. You may already pray this way at your church. People raise their hands, but they are as if they are tossing something. With yodah, the picture of arms extended also connotes the idea of confession in the word. Does praise include confession? Indeed, to praise in this manner is to extend our arms as an expression of our need for God. What an encouragement to know that the presence of God is help to us! Here are a few more passages in Psalms for further devotion and study. When you read the following passages, extend your arms toward God. It may even be your palms raised. The important part is to admit your need for God and his presences. Psalm 43:4 – Then I will go to the altar of God, to God my exceeding joy; and upon the lyre, I shall praise You, O God, my God. Psalm 71:22 – I will also praise You with a harp, even Your truth, O my God, to You I will sing praises with the lyre, O Holy One of Israel. Psalm 89:5 – The heavens will praise Your wonders, O lord, Your faithfulness also in the assembly of the holy ones. I encourage to hang this scriptures in your home or put them in your car! Romans 15:13 May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit. Hebrews 11:1 Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see. Romans 5:1-5 (read in your Bible) Psalm 119:114 You are my refuge and my shield; I have put my hope in your word. Hebrews 10:23 Let us hold unswervingly to the hope we profess, for he who promised is faithful. Micah 7:7 But as for me, I watch in hope for the Lord, I wait for God my Savior; my God will hear me. HAPPY NEW YEAR 2023!!!
Psalm 18:1-19 I love you, Lord, my strength. 2 The Lord is my rock, my fortress and my deliverer; my God is my rock, in whom I take refuge, my shield[b] and the horn[c] of my salvation, my stronghold. 3 I called to the Lord, who is worthy of praise, and I have been saved from my enemies. 4 The cords of death entangled me; the torrents of destruction …
