Send us a textJoin 5-Minute Parenting Host Karen Ferguson as she discusses putting the focus of Earth Month back where it belongs, onto our Creator God! The world tries to convince our children that mother earth is in charge of this world, and that we must help save it. As parents and grandparents we can be intentional to take the focus off the fictional character of mother earth, and put it right where it belongs: on God our Creator. We can have fun celebrating Earth Day, but from a Christian perspective. Rather than remain silent on the issue and leave the lessons to the classroom, or social media thread, let's use this secular holiday as a teachable moment to point our children to the beauty and intentional design of God's Creation

Deuteronomy is Moses' final address to Israel before they enter the Promised Land. Chapter 7 continues his instructions, emphasizing God's covenant faithfulness and Israel's responsibility to remain holy and separate from the surrounding nations. This chapter feels like a father's final counsel to his children: “Don't forget who you are. Don't mix with the ways of the world. You are chosen.” Summary and Breakdown 1. The Lord Goes Before You (Verses 1–2) “When the Lord your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess and drives out before you many nations…” (v.1) Moses reminds the people: it is God who drives out the nations, not their strength. These nations were “greater and mightier,” but God has sovereignly chosen to displace them. The list of seven nations symbolizes completeness of conquest—God's full action to give His people space to flourish in the land of promise. Reflection: Victory belongs to the Lord. Often, what seems bigger than us is not bigger than God. He goes ahead of His people to prepare the way. 2. No Compromise, No Covenants (Verses 2–5) God commands: •Do not make treaties. •Do not intermarry. •Tear down their altars, smash sacred stones, cut down Asherah poles, and burn idols. This is not about ethnicity but spiritual purity. Intermarriage risked leading Israel into idolatry. God's desire is that they remain fully loyal to Him. Reflection: God calls His people to live distinct lives, not blending into the surrounding culture where it leads to compromise. Holiness is separation unto God, not isolation from people. 3. Chosen Because of Love (Verses 6–8) “The Lord did not set his affection on you and choose you because you were more numerous than other peoples, for you were the fewest of all peoples. But it was because the Lord loved you…” (v.7–8) Here is the heart of the covenant: God's love and faithfulness to His promise. Israel's election is an act of divine grace, not human merit. Reflection: We are chosen not because of our qualifications, but because of God's unchanging love. His grace is the foundation of our identity. 4. Blessings for Obedience (Verses 9–15) “Know therefore that the Lord your God is God; he is the faithful God, keeping his covenant of love…” (v.9) God's blessings include: •Multiplication of children and livestock •Prosperity in the land •Victory over enemies •Health and protection from diseases God ties obedience to covenant blessings—not as a transaction, but as a relationship. Obedience aligns Israel with the life God desires for them. Reflection: Obedience brings us into alignment with the fullness of life God desires. It is not about earning love but walking in the benefits of relationship. 5. Assurance of Victory (Verses 16–24) Moses reassures: do not fear the nations, no matter how powerful they seem. God will fight for them and deliver them into Israel's hands “little by little.” “Do not be terrified by them, for the Lord your God, who is among you, is a great and awesome God.” (v.21) The “little by little” progression teaches patience and preparation. Sudden victory might leave the land unmanageable. Reflection: Victory in life is often progressive. God prepares us step by step, not all at once. Trust His timing. 6. Remove Every Snare (Verses 25–26) Moses warns against bringing anything detestable into their homes. Destruction is complete because idols are not neutral—they ensnare hearts. “Do not bring a detestable thing into your house or you, like it, will be set apart for destruction.” (v.26) Reflection: We must be vigilant about what we allow into our lives and homes. What seems small can be a doorway to compromise. Key Themes of Deuteronomy 7 •God's Sovereignty: He goes before His people, fights their battles, and secures their inheritance. •Covenant Love: God's choosing of Israel is an act of steadfast love, not human achievement. •Holiness and Separation: God calls His people to live distinctly, reflecting His holiness. •Victory Through Obedience: Walking in God's ways leads to flourishing and protection. •Diligence Against Compromise: Removing every idol and snare preserves covenant faithfulness. ⸻ Life Application Deuteronomy 7 is not just for ancient Israel; it speaks today - Remember that we are set apart for God's purposes. Do not fear challenges, for God fights for His people. Be vigilant against compromise in the small things. Trust God's timing in your journey. Celebrate God's choosing love—it is not earned but freely given. ⸻ Closing Prayer “Lord, thank You for Your faithful love and for choosing us to be Your people. Teach us to walk in holiness, trust in Your timing, and remove every snare from our lives. Help us to honor You in all we do, as we remember that victory belongs to You. Amen.”Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.

New Year's resolutions often set us up for disappointment by focusing on our efforts. The same can be true for Christians resolving to be "better" through more prayer, Bible study, or church attendance. This year, instead of self-dependent resolutions, we need ones that rely on God. Using Psalm 135, Rich Crosby offers an alternative vision for spiritual growth: allowing, celebrating, and expecting God to be God.Support the show

It shouldn't surprise us. Our God, who is a God of order, design, and truth, knows what our priorities should look like. The number five priority should be our hobbies and volunteer work. God, Spouse, Kids, Work – they all come first. When your church volunteering gets in the way of family, spouse, and even work time, everyone gets disgruntled. If your volunteer work causes you to neglect your kids or spouse, that's upside down. When something attacks the fabric of society (Marriage and Family), it is out of line with God's original intent. After a week of evaluating your priorities, did you find things in order or out of order? Submit your priorities to God and He will lead you out of the mess. But you have to let Go and Let God—time for the weekend. Celebrate God and Family and put everything else aside.

Your Faith Journey - Finding God Through Words, Song and Praise

It has been an exciting time here at the Son Games 2024 VBS program. We have had a great group of kids, a wonderful staff, and we not only partnered with St. Paul's Lutheran Church, but had people from other churches, too. This is what church is about. You heard our mottos, Join In, Team Up, Get Strong, Keep On, and Celebrate. This is all in the back drop of the Olympics. When we think of Olympics, they are competitions made up of diversity. This is from every country. All colors, cultures, orientations, almost everyone is represented. Paul talks about this in his letter to the Ephesians. He tells us that unity consists of one body, one Spirit, one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God. It is not about everyone looking the same or thinking the same or doing things the same way. I believe unity happens when we can celebrate diversity. It is not necessarily how something gets done. Each one of us may do something different. The challenge is to affirm the person regardless of how it gets done. Celebrating diversity is still very difficult for many people. Instead of being able to celebrate it, there are many who fear it. As a result, those who are different from a person often get rejected and told they are not wanted. Discrimination is real. We hear many slurs on the news. People often find a way to justify it. It is wrong and it is not the community that God is looking for. In our 2nd lesson today, Paul reminds the Ephesians and each of us that we have been given gifts to support and upbuild people and not tear them down. Paul says that we are to grow up and not be blown around by every wind of doctrine. The body of Christ is about everyone working together to build each other up. The challenge is to find the things that we have in common and stick to them. Even though we may not hear love in the news and other media outlets, we are still called to love. It may mean muting ads, which I have been doing. To find out true information, one needs to look elsewhere. We are called to speak the truth in love. This is very difficult to do at times. In our Gospel lesson today, we hear the crowd asking for it and Jesus offering them as well as us, the bread of life, in order to be strengthened and connected to him. When we are seeking the bread of life it makes us stop and remember that it is not about us, but actually about we. We being God and our neighbors in all of their diversity. The crowds were not getting who Jesus was. Who is Jesus to us? Our Gospel lesson end with Jesus making a statement that he is the bread of life. Whoever comes to him will never be hungry whoever believe in him will never be thirsty. This is what we will explore next week in the sermon. Today Jesus offers us the bread of life to be strengthened, to give us eyes to see and ears to hear that we may celebrate diversity to create unity. Join In, Team Up, Get Strong, Keep On, and Celebrate God's beloved community. Let us pray: God of unity and diversity, You call us to celebrate diversity. You offer us you, the bread of life, to strengthen us and help us to see each other as gifts. May your Holy Spirit help us to receive you and continue creating unity as we celebrate the diversity that you have created. In Jesus name, Amen.

We often talk about the importance of having a strong father figure in the house.  But, we don't always talk about what the characteristics of the strong father are. In the parable of the Prodigal Son, we get an incredible picture of what it looks like to be a Strong Dad!  Here are six ways that the Father responds to us so that we can respond the same to our children. Unconditional Love: The father's love transcends the son's rebellion. He doesn't withhold affection as punishment. For Dads Today: Show your love consistently, through actions and words. Let your children know they are loved, regardless of their choices.  You don't have to love their choices, but work hard to love them through their choices. When you see a bad choice make sure to separate them from the choice in your judgement.  “Your choice is ridiculous.” Verses - “you are ridiculous”Allowed Freewill - The father did not try to stop, redirect, or even threaten his son to change his mind.  He allowed the son to make his own decision. (obviously, we are not recommending this for a young child.  But as our children turn into young adults, we must strongly consider releasing them to their ways. Patient Trust vs Aggressive Chase: The father waits patiently rather than running after his son. He trusts that there is going to be good that comes from all of this. He may have felt impatient and wanted God to deliver his son back to him faster, but this is not mentioned in the parable.  For Dads Today: Practice patience. Growth takes time. Trust your children's ability to learn and make amends.Unending Desire for Restoration: The father never “writes him off”.  He's constantly aware, watching for his return.  For Dads Today: Be observant. Pay attention to your children's subtle cues, their joys and struggles. Be present in their lives.Unconditional Forgiveness: The father doesn't look at his son and say, “you need to apologize to me before I can forgive you.”   He embraces his son the moment he sees him, demonstrating immense compassion.  For Dads Today: Focus on reconciliation, not punishment. Let forgiveness be a bridge to rebuild the relationship.Celebrate God's Work: The father throws a feast, not out of obligation, but out of joy for his son's return. He gives freely, restoring his son's dignity.  For Dads Today: Be generous with your love, time, and resources.Celebrate your children's victories, big and small. As we continue on with the duty and responsibility to raise the next generation.  Consider how you can be more like the father in the story of the Prodigal Son. Luke 15:11-32http://rocksolidfamilies.orgSupport the Show.#Rocksolidfamilies, #familytherapy, #marriagecounseling, #parenting, #faithbasedcounseling, #counseling, #Strongdads, #coaching, #lifecoach, #lifecoaching, #marriagecoaching, #marriageandfamily, #control, #security, #respect, #affection, #love, #purpose, #faith, #affairs, #infidelity

This is a guided meditation and reflection on all of Psalm 32. Psalm 32 starts with the reminder of the joy we should know because of the fresh start and a clean slate we've been given through Jesus. Have we forgotten how amazing and miraculous his work is in our lives? This Psalm also reminds us that hiding sin in secret places will eat us up from the inside out. The amazing news is – when we bring anything hiden into the light, God renews and receives us. Did you catch that? Every single time you turn back to God, he receives you. Every. Single. Time. He does not tire of our returns, he celebrates them. In this meditation, we will listen to Psalm 32 from the Message Translation and I will give you prompts to reflect on with the Lord. Each reflection space in 1 minute long. Feel free to pause or rewind if you need more time. May the Lord guide you to what he has for you through his Word today. Here are the reflection prompts: Consider, what would your life be like without Jesus? Thank God that through Jesus he has given you a clean slate. Recall a time when you were hiding from God and others and how it felt. When you returned to God and stopped hiding from others, how did that feel? Thank him for his mercy. Bring it forward to today… is there any place in your life that you feel you are hiding from God or others? If so, what's holding you back from bringing it to the light? Ask God if there is any place in your life where you're being ornery like a horse or a mule and resisting him. If he reveals anything, Ask him for his help. If nothing comes to mind, ask him to help you stay tender and responsive to his leading. Praise God for the truth that you are loved every time you turn around. If there's a place that God has shown you where you need to turn around, ask God for his help. And remember you will be received with love.   Here's some links I discussed in the podcast: The guided retreat to help you move into this new year with intention is here.   You can find Jodie at http://www.jodieniznik.com/ Instagram @creatingspaceforgod Facebook @JodieGNiznik Learn more about Lectio Divina and download your free Lectio Divina Journal here. The passages we meditated on is as follows: Psalm 32, The Message Count yourself lucky, how happy you must be—                         you get a fresh start,                         your slate's wiped clean. 2        Count yourself lucky—                         God holds nothing against you                         and you're holding nothing back from him. 3        When I kept it all inside,                         my bones turned to powder,                         my words became daylong groans. 4        The pressure never let up;                         all the juices of my life dried up. 5        Then I let it all out;                         I said, “I'll make a clean breast of my failures to God.”                   Suddenly the pressure was gone—                         my guilt dissolved,                         my sin disappeared. 6        These things add up. Every one of us needs to pray;                         when all hell breaks loose and the dam bursts                         we'll be on high ground, untouched. 7        God's my island hideaway,                         keeps danger far from the shore,                         throws garlands of hosannas around my neck. 8        Let me give you some good advice;                         I'm looking you in the eye                         and giving it to you straight: 9        “Don't be ornery like a horse or mule                         that needs bit and bridle                         to stay on track.” 10       God-defiers are always in trouble;                         God-affirmers find themselves loved                         every time they turn around. 11       Celebrate God.                         Sing together—everyone!                         All you honest hearts, raise the roof! The Church Series: Summary & Recap (Part 25)

Expedition 44

Play Episode Listen Later Nov 26, 2023 85:10

We started a series on the church back in July of 2022 and a year and a half later we are wrapping It up.  Today we're going to recap where we've been.  The big idea is that the church is not an institution … it's an organism (it's organic)! ·      There was equality- No clergy/laity divide ·      The giftings of the entire body were active to display Jesus ·      They met face to face throughout the week in relationships 7 Churches of Revelation (Nationalism and Dispensationalism) The point of looking at these 7 churches is that it pointed out Jesus' ideals in his Body. Much of the issues here deals with the World seeping into the church.  Leadership and Oversight the glaring question we need to ask is “Are these offices or simply people using their god given gifts?”  Positional thinking is hung up on nouns, while functional thinking stresses verbs.  The view of oversight in the NT church is about the whole body operating in their giftings and being discipled by those who are wise, mature, and have the character of Christ in them. This is what leadership and oversight looks like rather than the CEO structure that focuses on offices and hierarchy which hurts the church.  5-Fold Ministry Ephesians 4 describes these as “ascension gifts” not “ascension offices”.  This entire chapter focuses on unity in the body of Christ, not positions which divide clergy from laity.Reimagining GiftsSpiritual gifts are not about hierarchy but about building up the body of Christ. The church is a body- a mutual and co-equal body- that reflects Jesus. There is no hierarchy in giftings. These giftings don't lead to an office, though some might lead or administrate in their gifting better than others based on maturity and humility- we should all mutually submit to each other.  Reimagining Community ·      Spiritually- We need to be together in spiritual friendship gathering around the Way of Jesus, studying scripture, breaking bread, praying for each other. DEVOTED- They devoted themselves to these things. ·      Physically- meeting the needs of the community, being generous and being available.  ·      Emotionally- This is about completeness and transformation- How is our mindset and focus? Is it singularly on Jesus or is there entanglement with the world? ·      Missionally- Do we live in unity or are there offenses and divisions among us that we have swept under the rug? Division and disunity kills the mission to be lights to the world.  Reimagining Giving The main ideals of giving in the New Covenant: ·      Give Cheerfully ·      Take care of fellow believers (and support the work of the Lord)·      Care for the least of these ·      Celebrate God (see communion and the love feast in 1 Cor 11) Whenever the church gathers together, its guiding and functioning principal is simply to incarnate Christ (1 Cor 12:12) The Edenic Ideal: We always take everything back to God's ideals. The Bible begins and ends with Eden. New Creation has broken into the present through the resurrection, so the church should be living according to God's ideals in our communities even if the world looks completely opposite. God's eternal purpose was to have a people in relationship with him working in equality under God's kingship. This is God's ideal for his church too. Each of us bringing our gifts to the altar/table and using them to image him to creation.  ·      The western view of leadership connected to authority, hierarchy, control, and covering has handcuffed the bride of Christ - making her ineffective for the kingdom.  ·      We need to get back to the servant mindset rather than the CEO leader mindset in the church ·      We need more feet washing and less discussions about “who's your covering”  ·      More mutual submission and less “human headship” ·      More family, less institution ·      More verbs, less nouns --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/expedition44/support

Part 2 of 2 on Giving- Tithes, Offerings, and First Fruits. History tells us that: • Tithing (10%) did not become an accepted “New Covenant Doctrine” in the church for over 700 years after the cross. • Before this in 585 the church at the Council of Macon in France, they tried to enforce tithing on its members and were unsuccessful. • It was not until the year 777 that Charlemagne allowed the church to enforce the collection of tithes. OT Recap • Before the law giving was voluntary not a commandment. This seems to be God's ideals. o We cannot take these Pre-Law examples too far though. We don't see that the giving was in regularity or even immediate. It was usually in response of thanks to God for something big He accomplished. • The Commands for tithing were for the children of Israel and to only be done “in the Land” • The Levitical tithe was to the Levites (the priests). Originally the whole nation were to be priests but they rejected this and God commissioned the Levites. Today we are a kingdom of priests in Christ, so we can't exactly use this for supporting a class of religious professionals. We'll see in the NT their possessions were at the disposal of the community when in need. • The festival tithe was money saved up for you to use 3x a year to celebrate God with the community- essentially money to take 3 vacations with Jesus. • The Storehouse tithe was about caring for the least of these. It was 10% every 3rd and 6th year in the 7-year cycle. This was for the care of the needy. • The King's Tithe was a tax for rejecting God. The main ideals of tithing in the OT: • Caring for the Levites (caring for those ministering in the family of God) • Caring for the poor, widow, alien, and fatherless • Fellowship and celebration with God NT Recap • The mentions of “tithing” are in the context of the children of Israel (the pharisees) • Attitude in giving is central in the NT- being a cheerful giver and not out of compulsion • Generosity is key- there is no set amount in the New Covenant • We give because God gave to us • First Fruits- all belongs to him The main ideals of giving in the OT: • Take care of fellow believers (and support the work of the Lord) • Care for the least of these • Celebrate God (see communion and the love feast in 1 Cor 11) o These are just like the OT- not commanded but still expected. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/expedition44/support
