Bible Study WITH ME through Exodus chapter 31 and ask all the questions!
We can be artistic in different ways because our Creator God has created us in His image. All Rights Reserved, CBN Asia Inc.https://www.cbnasia.com/giveSupport the show
For today’s installment of our 40 Days Meditation series, our brother Miguel Vargas provides commentary on Ex 35:4-19; 35:30-36:1; 37:1-9. Listen below, download here, or search for Words from the Brothers on your favourite podcasting app. Moses said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. Take from among you a contribution to the Lord. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the Lord’s contribution: gold, silver, and bronze; blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen; goats’ hair, tanned rams’ skins, and goatskins; acacia wood, oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, and onyx stones and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece. “Let every skillful craftsman among you come and make all that the Lord has commanded: the tabernacle, its tent and its covering, its hooks and its frames, its bars, its pillars, and its bases; the ark with its poles, the mercy seat, and the veil of the screen; the table with its poles and all its utensils, and the bread of the Presence; the lampstand also for the light, with its utensils and its lamps, and the oil for the light; and the altar of incense, with its poles, and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense, and the screen for the door, at the door of the tabernacle; the altar of burnt offering, with its grating of bronze, its poles, and all its utensils, the basin and its stand; the hangings of the court, its pillars and its bases, and the screen for the gate of the court; the pegs of the tabernacle and the pegs of the court, and their cords; the finely worked garments for ministering in the Holy Place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests.” Then Moses said to the people of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver-by any sort of workman or skilled designer. “Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whom the Lord has put skill and intelligence to know how to do any work in the construction of the sanctuary shall work in accordance with all that the Lord has commanded.” Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood. Two cubits and a half was its length, a cubit and a half its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height. And he overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside, and made a molding of gold around it. And he cast for it four rings of gold for its four feet, two rings on its one side and two rings on its other side. And he made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold and put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry the ark. And he made a mercy seat of pure gold. Two cubits and a half was its length, and a cubit and a half its breadth. And he made two cherubim of gold. He made them of hammered work on the two ends of the mercy seat, one cherub on the one end, and one cherub on the other end. Of one piece with the mercy seat he made the cherubim on its two ends. The cherubim spread out their wings above, overshadowing the mercy seat with their wings, with their faces one to another; toward the mercy seat were the faces of the cherubim. Ex 35:4-19; 35:30-36:1; 37:1-9
Though he saw a vision of the holy ark, Moshe was not called to build it. This parasha gives us insight into the artistic genius of Israel gifted by God for that purpose: Bezalel, and his equally creative partner in the work, Oholiab.
Some of the most famous pianists in the world, including Van Cliburn and Vladimir Horowitz, relied on Franz Mohr, chief concert technician at Steinway & Sons in New York, to ensure that their concert pianos were ready for performances. A master piano tuner, Mohr was sought-after for his intricate knowledge of pianos and great skill developed over decades. Mohr believed his skills were an avenue to serve God, and he regularly shared his faith with pianists and performance staff. When the nation of Israel was preparing to build the tent of meeting and other items necessary for worship (Exodus 31:7–11), they needed individuals with expert skills. God appointed two skilled artisans, Bezalel and Oholiab, to do the work and filled them with the “Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills—to make artistic designs” (vv. 3–4). In addition to their specialized skills, God empowered them with His Spirit to guide their work. Their willingness to use their unique talents in service to God allowed the Israelites to appropriately worship Him. Whether or not we consider ourselves artistic, each of us has unique, God-given gifts that we can use to serve others (Romans 12:6). Empowered by the Spirit, we can serve and worship God through our work using the wisdom, understanding, and skills He’s given us.
As Eliot notes, Parashat T'rumah [Exodus 25:1-27:19] begins the 2nd half of the Book of Exodus and is concerned mostly with the planning for and construction of the mishkan, the portable tabernacle which accompanies the people in their wandering in the wilderness. The purpose of the mishkan and how it fits into the larger religious life of the people is the basis of part of our conversation. We also take up the plans for the ark and its symbolism. We consider the roles of Moses, who conveys the plans for the mishkan to the people, and B'tzalel and Oholiab who actually construct it. This Shabbat is Rosh Hodesh Adar [the second day of Rosh Hodesh but the 1st day of the Hebrew month of Adar]. It is also Shabbat Sh'qalim, the 1st of the 4 special shabbatot preceding Passover. It is the official beginning of the Passover season, with all that implies. In this difficult week for Israel and the worldwide Jewish community we are ever mindful of the hostages, both dead and alive, and the need for their return to their families now, and of the soldiers who defend Israel as part of the Israel Defense Forces, may they be removed from harm's way. Shabbat Shalom, Hodesh Tov. With the onset of Adar, the month in which the joyous holiday of Purim is celebrated, it is said that simchah, joy, should increase. May it be so.
After a period of great rebellion against the Lord, He called Israel to consecration, and His presence regularly came down to be among them in the Tent of Meeting. When it came time to build the more permanent Tabernacle, He called Bezalel to be the chief artisan, along with Oholiab. Bezalel was chosen for his heart for the Lord, Who filled him with His Spirit and equipped him for the work. Bezalel's exactness is fulfilling God's Word stands as an example for us to obey "to the letter", and to work hard to honor the Lord and exhibit HIs presence in our lives. Exodus 31:1-11 (NIVUK) Bezalel and Oholiab 31 Then the Lord said to Moses, 2 ‘See I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills – 4 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 5 to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. 6 Moreover, I have appointed Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, to help him. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you: 7 the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent – 8 the table and its articles, the pure gold lampstand and all its accessories, the altar of incense, 9 the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, the basin with its stand – 10 and also the woven garments, both the sacred garments for Aaron the priest and the garments for his sons when they serve as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and fragrant incense for the Holy Place. They are to make them just as I commanded you.'
Reflection on Exodus 36 Exodus 36 recounts the construction of the Tabernacle, emphasizing the Israelites' obedience, generosity, and collaboration in building a sacred space for worship. The chapter highlights the craftsmanship of Bezalel, Oholiab, and other skilled artisans who were endowed with wisdom and understanding from God to execute the intricate details of the Tabernacle. It also demonstrates the Israelites' extraordinary willingness to contribute to God's work, as their offerings exceeded what was needed. Key Themes in Exodus 36 1.Generosity in Giving (Verses 3-7): The people of Israel brought freewill offerings with such abundance that Moses had to command them to stop giving. This overwhelming response reflects their gratitude and commitment to God after being delivered from Egypt. It serves as a reminder of the power of a unified, willing heart in advancing God's purposes. Application: This passage challenges us to consider our own willingness to give to God's work, not only financially but also with our time and talents. It inspires us to cultivate a spirit of generosity and recognize that God provides abundantly when we surrender to Him. 2.Spirit-Led Craftsmanship (Verses 1-2): Bezalel and Oholiab were filled with the Spirit of God, enabling them to complete the work with excellence. Their skills were a divine gift, demonstrating that God equips His people to fulfill His purposes. Application: Whether in ministry, art, or daily work, this reminds us that our talents are God-given and meant to glorify Him. We should seek to work diligently and rely on the Holy Spirit for wisdom and creativity in all we do. 3.Attention to Detail in Worship (Verses 8-38): The remainder of the chapter describes the precise construction of the Tabernacle's components, such as the curtains, frames, and coverings. These details reflect God's holiness and the importance of approaching Him with reverence. Application: This meticulousness calls us to approach our worship and service to God thoughtfully and intentionally. It encourages us to prioritize excellence in honoring Him, not out of legalism but as an act of love and devotion. Lessons from Exodus 36 •The Heart of Giving: True generosity flows from a heart of gratitude and trust in God's provision. •Empowered Service: God equips and empowers individuals to use their gifts for His glory. •Reverence in Worship: Attention to detail in worship reflects the reverence and awe we should have for God. Exodus 36 reminds us that when God's people unite in faith, generosity, and purpose, extraordinary things can happen. It calls us to be willing vessels, using our resources and talents to build His kingdom.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.
Reflection on Exodus 35 Exodus 35 marks a pivotal moment in the construction of the Tabernacle as Moses instructs the Israelites on God's commandments regarding its building. The chapter underscores themes of obedience, community involvement, and the sanctity of the Sabbath, all while highlighting the importance of skilled craftsmanship and generosity in worship. Key Themes in Exodus 35 1.The Sabbath Rest (Verses 1-3): Moses begins by reminding the Israelites to observe the Sabbath, emphasizing its sacredness. Even in the midst of their work for the Tabernacle, the command to rest remained central. The penalty for violating this command is severe, underscoring the seriousness of keeping the Sabbath holy. Application: This teaches us the importance of rest and reverence for God amidst our busy lives. It is a reminder to prioritize spiritual renewal and obedience, trusting that God honors those who honor His commands. 2.A Call for Generosity (Verses 4-9): Moses invites the Israelites to bring freewill offerings for the construction of the Tabernacle. The materials include precious metals, fabrics, wood, and spices. This voluntary giving was an opportunity for the people to contribute to a sacred purpose. Application: The Israelites' willingness to give reflects a heart of gratitude and faith. In our lives, it reminds us to give joyfully and sacrificially, trusting that God uses our contributions to further His purposes. 3.The Role of Skilled Workers (Verses 10-19): God calls for skilled artisans to lead the construction. These individuals, filled with God's Spirit, were entrusted with creating intricate and beautiful elements of the Tabernacle. Application: This demonstrates that God values our unique talents and equips us for specific roles in His work. Whatever our gifts—whether in leadership, creativity, or service—they are meant to glorify Him. 4.The Response of the Community (Verses 20-29): The entire community responds with overwhelming generosity, bringing their offerings and talents to the project. Both men and women contribute what they have, from material possessions to their skills, showing unity and dedication to God's command. Application: This passage highlights the power of collective effort and the beauty of a unified community working toward a shared goal. It encourages us to contribute to God's work together, each bringing our own gifts and resources. 5.Bezalel and Oholiab (Verses 30-35): God specifically calls Bezalel and Oholiab, filling them with wisdom, understanding, and skill to lead the work. Their divine empowerment emphasizes that God not only calls us to serve but also provides the ability to accomplish His purposes. Application: When God calls us, He equips us. This should encourage us to trust in His provision and guidance, knowing He will give us the skills and resources needed for His work. Lessons from Exodus 35 •Obedience to God's Commandments: Observing the Sabbath and responding to God's instructions reflect a heart of obedience and reverence. •Generosity in Worship: Giving to God's work is a privilege and should come from a willing and joyful heart. •The Value of Individual Gifts: Every talent and skill has a place in God's work, and He empowers us to use them for His glory. •Unity in Community: When a community works together, united in purpose and faith, incredible things can be achieved. Conclusion Exodus 35 serves as a powerful reminder of how God invites His people to participate in His divine plan. It emphasizes the importance of obedience, generosity, and the use of our God-given talents. As we reflect on this chapter, we are encouraged to rest in God's provision, give freely to His work, and trust that He will equip us to fulfill the purposes He has called us to.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.
Exodus 31 is a pivotal chapter in the book of Exodus, detailing God's instructions to Moses concerning the skilled artisans appointed to construct the Tabernacle, as well as a reminder of the importance of the Sabbath. 1. Bezalel and Oholiab Chosen (Exodus 31:1-11) God specifically calls Bezalel, the son of Uri, from the tribe of Judah, and fills him with His Spirit, granting him exceptional wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and craftsmanship. Bezalel is given the ability to work in gold, silver, and bronze, as well as to design artistic works, cut stones, and carve wood. God also appoints Oholiab, from the tribe of Dan, as his assistant. This passage highlights the divine origin of human talent and skill. God empowers individuals with abilities to serve His purposes. These artisans are tasked with creating the Ark of the Covenant, the lampstand, the altar, and all other furnishings for the Tabernacle, as well as the priestly garments and the anointing oil. 2. The Sabbath Rest Commanded (Exodus 31:12-17) God reminds Moses of the importance of the Sabbath as a sign of the covenant between Himself and the Israelites. Observing the Sabbath is a mark of holiness and devotion to God. The penalty for violating the Sabbath is severe, emphasizing its sacredness. This section reinforces the idea that even amidst great tasks, such as building the Tabernacle, God's people must rest and honor Him. The Sabbath serves as a reminder that God is the Creator who rested on the seventh day after completing His work. 3. The Tablets of the Covenant (Exodus 31:18) The chapter concludes with God giving Moses the two stone tablets inscribed by His own finger. These tablets contain the terms of the covenant, underscoring their divine authority and permanence. This moment signifies the culmination of God's instructions to Moses on Mount Sinai and sets the stage for the events that follow in Exodus 32, where the Israelites' disobedience with the golden calf is revealed. Key Themes 1.God's Empowerment: The calling and equipping of Bezalel and Oholiab show that God provides the necessary skills and resources to accomplish His work. 2.Sabbath Observance: The emphasis on the Sabbath highlights its role in maintaining a rhythm of worship, rest, and remembrance of God's covenant. 3.Divine Authority: The tablets of the covenant symbolize God's unchanging word and His direct involvement with His people. Reflection Exodus 31 reminds believers of the importance of using their God-given talents for His glory, honoring the sacred rhythms of work and rest, and submitting to the authority of His word. It calls us to reflect on how we balance work and worship in our lives and how we use our abilities to serve the purposes of God's kingdom.Become a supporter of this podcast: https://www.spreaker.com/podcast/sendme-radio--732966/support.
It is not uncommon to hear the phrase "filled with the Spirit" in connection to some kind of erratic spiritual experience. But in the Bible, that phrase is first connected to the skills necessary to build the tabernacle. In this episode of Sermon B-Sides, Pastor Jon and Pastor Rusten discuss what it means to be filled with the Spirit in light of the skill and wisdom given to Oholiab and Bezalel to manufacture the parts of the tabernacle. 38 He made the altar of burnt offering of acacia wood. Five cubits was its length, and five cubits its breadth. It was square, and three cubits was its height. 2 He made horns for it on its four corners. Its horns were of one piece with it, and he overlaid it with bronze. 3 And he made all the utensils of the altar, the pots, the shovels, the basins, the forks, and the fire pans. He made all its utensils of bronze. 4 And he made for the altar a grating, a network of bronze, under its ledge, extending halfway down. 5 He cast four rings on the four corners of the bronze grating as holders for the poles. 6 He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with bronze. 7 And he put the poles through the rings on the sides of the altar to carry it with them. He made it hollow, with boards. 8 He made the basin of bronze and its stand of bronze, from the mirrors of the ministering women who ministered in the entrance of the tent of meeting. 9 And he made the court. For the south side the hangings of the court were of fine twined linen, a hundred cubits; 10 their twenty pillars and their twenty bases were of bronze, but the hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver. 11 And for the north side there were hangings of a hundred cubits; their twenty pillars and their twenty bases were of bronze, but the hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver. 12 And for the west side were hangings of fifty cubits, their ten pillars, and their ten bases; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver. 13 And for the front to the east, fifty cubits. 14 The hangings for one side of the gate were fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and three bases.15 And so for the other side. On both sides of the gate of the court were hangings of fifteen cubits, with their three pillars and their three bases. 16 All the hangings around the court were of fine twined linen. 17 And the bases for the pillars were of bronze, but the hooks of the pillars and their fillets were of silver. The overlaying of their capitals was also of silver, and all the pillars of the court were filleted with silver. 18 And the screen for the gate of the court was embroidered with needlework in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. It was twenty cubits long and five cubits high in its breadth, corresponding to the hangings of the court. 19 And their pillars were four in number. Their four bases were of bronze, their hooks of silver, and the overlaying of their capitals and their fillets of silver.20 And all the pegs for the tabernacle and for the court all around were of bronze. 21 These are the records of the tabernacle, the tabernacle of the testimony, as they were recorded at the commandment of Moses, the responsibility of the Levites under the direction of Ithamar the son of Aaron the priest. 22 Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the Lordcommanded Moses; 23 and with him was Oholiab the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, an engraver and designer and embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. 24 All the gold that was used for the work, in all the construction of the sanctuary, the gold from the offering, was twenty-nine talents and 730 shekels,[b] by the shekel of the sanctuary.25 The silver from those of the congregation who were recorded was a hundred talents and 1,775 shekels, by the shekel of the sanctuary: 26 a beka[c] a head (that is, half a shekel, by the shekel of the sanctuary), for everyone who was listed in the records, from twenty years old and upward, for 603,550 men.27 The hundred talents of silver were for casting the bases of the sanctuary and the bases of the veil; a hundred bases for the hundred talents, a talent a base. 28 And of the 1,775 shekels he made hooks for the pillars and overlaid their capitals and made fillets for them. 29 The bronze that was offered was seventy talents and 2,400 shekels; 30 with it he made the bases for the entrance of the tent of meeting, the bronze altar and the bronze grating for it and all the utensils of the altar, 31 the bases around the court, and the bases of the gate of the court, all the pegs of the tabernacle, and all the pegs around the court.
36 “Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whom the Lord has put skill and intelligence to know how to do any work in the construction of the sanctuary shall work in accordance with all that the Lord has commanded.” 2 And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whose mind the Lord had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to do the work. 3 And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning, 4 so that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task that he was doing, 5 and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lordhas commanded us to do.” 6 So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing, 7 for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more. 8 And all the craftsmen among the workmen made the tabernacle with ten curtains. They were made of fine twined linen and blue and purple and scarlet yarns, with cherubim skillfully worked. 9 The length of each curtain was twenty-eight cubits,[a] and the breadth of each curtain four cubits. All the curtains were the same size. 10 He[b] coupled five curtains to one another, and the other five curtains he coupled to one another. 11 He made loops of blue on the edge of the outermost curtain of the first set. Likewise he made them on the edge of the outermost curtain of the second set. 12 He made fifty loops on the one curtain, and he made fifty loops on the edge of the curtain that was in the second set. The loops were opposite one another. 13 And he made fifty clasps of gold, and coupled the curtains one to the other with clasps. So the tabernacle was a single whole. 14 He also made curtains of goats' hair for a tent over the tabernacle. He made eleven curtains. 15 The length of each curtain was thirty cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four cubits. The eleven curtains were the same size. 16 He coupled five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves.17 And he made fifty loops on the edge of the outermost curtain of the one set, and fifty loops on the edge of the other connecting curtain. 18 And he made fifty clasps of bronze to couple the tent together that it might be a single whole. 19 And he made for the tent a covering of tanned rams' skins and goatskins. 20 Then he made the upright frames for the tabernacle of acacia wood. 21 Ten cubits was the length of a frame, and a cubit and a half the breadth of each frame. 22 Each frame had two tenons for fitting together. He did this for all the frames of the tabernacle. 23 The frames for the tabernacle he made thus: twenty frames for the south side. 24 And he made forty bases of silver under the twenty frames, two bases under one frame for its two tenons, and two bases under the next frame for its two tenons. 25 For the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, he made twenty frames 26 and their forty bases of silver, two bases under one frame and two bases under the next frame. 27 For the rear of the tabernacle westward he made six frames. 28 He made two frames for corners of the tabernacle in the rear. 29 And they were separate beneath but joined at the top, at the first ring. He made two of them this way for the two corners. 30 There were eight frames with their bases of silver: sixteen bases, under every frame two bases. 31 He made bars of acacia wood, five for the frames of the one side of the tabernacle, 32 and five bars for the frames of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the frames of the tabernacle at the rear westward. 33 And he made the middle bar to run from end to end halfway up the frames. 34 And he overlaid the frames with gold, and made their rings of gold for holders for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold. 35 He made the veil of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen; with cherubim skillfully worked into it he made it. 36 And for it he made four pillars of acacia and overlaid them with gold. Their hooks were of gold, and he cast for them four bases of silver. 37 He also made a screen for the entrance of the tent, of blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, embroidered with needlework, 38 and its five pillars with their hooks. He overlaid their capitals, and their fillets were of gold, but their five bases were of bronze.
Exodus 31:1-11. In calling Bezalel and Oholiab to do the work of building the Tabernacle, we are reminded that all of us have gifts and abilities that God wants to us for His glory.
35 Moses assembled all the congregation of the people of Israel and said to them, “These are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do. 2 Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. 3 You shall kindle no fire in all your dwelling places on the Sabbath day.” 4 Moses said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. 5 Take from among you a contribution to the Lord. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the Lord's contribution: gold, silver, and bronze; 6 blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen; goats' hair, 7 tanned rams' skins, and goatskins;[a] acacia wood, 8 oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, 9 and onyx stones and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece. 10 “Let every skillful craftsman among you come and make all that the Lord has commanded: 11 the tabernacle, its tent and its covering, its hooks and its frames, its bars, its pillars, and its bases; 12 the ark with its poles, the mercy seat, and the veil of the screen; 13 the table with its poles and all its utensils, and the bread of the Presence; 14 the lampstand also for the light, with its utensils and its lamps, and the oil for the light; 15 and the altar of incense, with its poles, and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense, and the screen for the door, at the door of the tabernacle; 16 the altar of burnt offering, with its grating of bronze, its poles, and all its utensils, the basin and its stand;17 the hangings of the court, its pillars and its bases, and the screen for the gate of the court; 18 the pegs of the tabernacle and the pegs of the court, and their cords; 19 the finely worked garments for ministering[b] in the Holy Place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests.” 20 Then all the congregation of the people of Israel departed from the presence of Moses. 21 And they came, everyone whose heart stirred him, and everyone whose spirit moved him, and brought the Lord's contribution to be used for the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the holy garments. 22 So they came, both men and women. All who were of a willing heart brought brooches and earrings and signet rings and armlets, all sorts of gold objects, every man dedicating an offering of gold to the Lord. 23 And every one who possessed blue or purple or scarlet yarns or fine linen or goats' hair or tanned rams' skins or goatskins brought them. 24 Everyone who could make a contribution of silver or bronze brought it as the Lord's contribution. And every one who possessed acacia wood of any use in the work brought it. 25 And every skillful woman spun with her hands, and they all brought what they had spun in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen. 26 All the women whose hearts stirred them to use their skill spun the goats' hair.27 And the leaders brought onyx stones and stones to be set, for the ephod and for the breastpiece, 28 and spices and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense.29 All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering to the Lord. 30 Then Moses said to the people of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship,32 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. 34 And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan.35 He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver—by any sort of workman or skilled designer.
10/13/2024 Kids Cove Story & Sermon: God's Presence (Tabernacle and Ark of the Covenant; Exodus 25-40) Sunday, 10/13/24 Exodus 25:40. “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.Exodus 29:38-46. 38 “These are the sacrifices you are to offer regularly on the altar. Each day, offer two lambs that are a year old, 39 one in the morning and the other in the evening. 40 With one of them, offer two quarts of choice flour mixed with one quart of pure oil of pressed olives; also, offer one quart of wine as a liquid offering. 41 Offer the other lamb in the evening, along with the same offerings of flour and wine as in the morning. It will be a pleasing aroma, a special gift presented to the Lord. 42 “These burnt offerings are to be made each day from generation to generation. Offer them in the Lord's presence at the Tabernacle entrance; there I will meet with you and speak with you. 43 I will meet the people of Israel there, in the place made holy by my glorious presence. 44 Yes, I will consecrate the Tabernacle and the altar, and I will consecrate Aaron and his sons to serve me as priests. 45 Then I will live among the people of Israel and be their God, 46 and they will know that I am the Lord their God. I am the one who brought them out of the land of Egypt so that I could live among them. I am the Lord their God.Exodus 34:6-7a, 10-116 The Lord passed in front of Moses, calling out,“Yahweh! The Lord! The God of compassion and mercy! I am slow to anger and filled with unfailing love and faithfulness. 7 I lavish unfailing love to a thousand generations. I forgive iniquity, rebellion, and sin.10 The Lord replied, “Listen, I am making a covenant with you in the presence of all your people. I will perform miracles that have never been performed anywhere in all the earth or in any nation. And all the people around you will see the power of the Lord—the awesome power I will display for you. 11 But listen carefully to everything I command you today. Then I will go ahead of you…Exodus 36:1-3a NLTThe Lord has gifted Bezalel, Oholiab, and the other skilled craftsmen with wisdom and ability to perform any task involved in building the sanctuary. Let them construct and furnish the Tabernacle, just as the Lord has commanded.” 2 So Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and all the others who were specially gifted by the Lord and were eager to get to work. 3 Moses gave them the materials donated by the people of Israel as sacred offerings for the completion of the sanctuary…Exodus 39:42-43 NLT42 So the people of Israel followed all of the Lord's instructions to Moses. 43 Then Moses inspected all their work. When he found it had been done just as the Lord had commanded him, he blessed them.Exodus 40:34-38 NLT34 Then the cloud covered the Tabernacle, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle. 35 Moses could no longer enter the Tabernacle because the cloud had settled down over it, and the glory of the Lord filled the Tabernacle.36 Now whenever the cloud lifted from the Tabernacle, the people of Israel would set out on their journey, following it. 37 But if the cloud did not rise, they remained where they were until it lifted. 38 The cloud of the Lord hovered over the Tabernacle during the day, and at night fire glowed inside the cloud so the whole family of Israel could see it. This continued throughout all their journeys.
31 The Lord said to Moses, 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, 4 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, 5 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft.6 And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you: 7 the tent of meeting, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, 8 the table and its utensils, and the pure lampstand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, 9 and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin and its stand, 10 and the finely worked garments,[a] the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense for the Holy Place. According to all that I have commanded you, they shall do.” 12 And the Lord said to Moses, 13 “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the Lord, sanctify you.14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.15 Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. 17 It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the Lordmade heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.'” 18 And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
This Sunday we launch a new sermon series taking a look at the hidden figures of Scripture! In the 31,102 verses of Scripture there are characters that get only a passing reference and are quickly forgotten. Take Bezalel and Oholiab for example! They are only mentioned in Exodus 31 but these two men with hard to pronounce names are called by God for a specific purpose, and perhaps God is calling us too.
In this study, we see God reiterate the importance of keeping the Sabbath. We see the Israelites volunteer the materials needed to build the Tabernacle, all provided by God (as foretold in Genesis). And we see all the skilled workers called forward, including Bezalel and Oholiab. This brings us into our final segment of the book of Exodus, as we see the Tabernacle built and blessed by God. Outline: 00:31 - Review and outline 01:49 - Exodus 35.1-3 Sabbath Regulations reviewed. Verses: Ex 16.23; Gen 2.3; Ex 20.8-11; Ex 31:12-18; Ex 35.1-3 Important NT passages regarding the Sabbath: Mrk 2.27; Col 2.16; Rom 14.5-6; Gal 2.15-16 12:27 - Exodus 35.4-9 - A call to bring the elements. A repeat of Ex 25.1-7 - A command given by the Lord for the people to give. Question: Where did this wealth come from? Where did Israel get the gold, silver, bronze, yarn, fine linen and animal skins? From the Egyptians: Gen 15.13-14; Ex 11.1-3; Ex 12.35; Psa 105.37 16:51 - Exodus 35.10-29 - A call for skilled workers This is a listing of all the elements that were explained in Ex 25-30. 19:51 - What is a wave offering? Verse 22: All items were brought as a WAVE offering. We are not 100% sure exactly what a wave offering was, other than that it was clearly something that was lifted and presented to the Lord as an offering to the Lord. The term is seen 21x in Ex, Lv, and Num. (5x Ex, 10x Lev, 6x Num). 20:54 - What was a “freewill offering?” - First mention at Ex 35.29, Deut 12.5-7; Psa 54.6; Lev ch 22 & 23; 2 Cor 9.7. 25:42 - Exodus 35:30-36.2 Bezalel, Oholiab & every skilled worker, a repeat of Ex 31.1-6 28:54 - Exodus 36:3-7 - God Provides. The builders of the Tabernacle had so much that they had to tell people to stop giving. This was an abundance out of God's provision (foretold in Gen 15.13-14, told of in Ex 11.1-3 and seen in Ex 12.35). In this Bible study, we are covering Exodus 31 in which we see God appoint the workers to build the Tabernacle and all its elements. God appoints Bezalel as the lead and Oholiab as his assistant. We talk about these two men and what we know about them from the scriptures. Additionally, God ends Exodus 31 with a call to keep the Sabbath; we unpack why this is here and what it means. Outline: 00:05 - introduction and prayer 02:01 - Exodus 31.1-11 - Bezalel & Oholiab - God's calling 04:43 - Who is Bezalele & Oholiab in the Bible? 04:21 - Bezalele (bᵊṣal'ēl) - בְּצַלְאֵל His name means: “In the shadow of God” or “in the hand of God” Ex 31.2, 35.30, 36.1-2, 37.1, 38.22, and 2 Chr 1.5 08:00 - Oholiab ('āhŏlî'āḇ) - אָהֳלִיאָב His name means: “father's tent” Ex 31.6, 17, 35.34, 36.1-2, 38.23 10:09 - Why did God choose these two guys to build the Tabernacle? Why did he call them out by name for the work? 12:23 Application: Answering God's call in your life. Phil 1.6, Heb 13.21, Jos 1.9, Ex 3.7-12, Isa 6.8, Gal 2.16, Rom 3.28, Jas 2.24, 26 27:56 - Exodus 31.7-10 Tent of Meeting (Ex 26) Ark (Ex 25) Table of Showbread(Ex 25) Lampstand (Ex 25) Altar of Incense (Ex 30) Bronze Altar (Ex 27) Bronze Basin (Ex 30) Woven Garments (Ex 28-29) Anointing oil & incense (Ex 30) 29:01 - Exodus 31.12-18 - The Sabbath 30.22 - Exodus 31.18 - God gives Moses the 10 commandments on stone tablets. He has been up on Mount Saiani for a long time (Since Exodus 19, the last 12 chapters). He has been receiving instructions from God (the 10 commandments - as well as the Book of the Covenant and the instruction for the Tabernacle and all its elements). 31:22 - The Sabbath Ex 16 - 4x Ex 20 - 3x Ex 31 - 3x Ex 35 - 2x 34:59 - Ex 31.14 “Desecrate, Defileth, Profane” ḥālal חָלַל To pollute, desecrate, profane, or defile. To violate the honor of or to treat as common. Mark 2.27 - Jesus says, “The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.” 39:57 - Why was the Sabbath so important? Why does God make such a big deal about it in Exodus 31? It was a sign that Israel was following his call, and admitting that He is God and that He brought them out of bondage in Egypt. It is showing God respect and following his call. 43:27 - conclusions Support Iron Sheep Ministries: https://Ironsheep.org/donate Listen to the podcast: https://anchor.fm/ironsheep Contact Dave & the ISM team: info@ironsheep.org Be notified of each new teaching, join the email list: http://eepurl.com/g-2zAD Past videos referenced: The Sabbath: Exodus 20.8-11 - the 4th commandment https://youtu.be/PrHBMQTZjDY Establishment of the Sabbath - Exodus 16 Short video: https://youtu.be/BGwbdS6Jlx8 Full video: https://youtu.be/5myeehRVf5o Books/resources used or referenced: Dave reads from an NIV (New International Version) of the Bible. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you." Exodus 31:1-6 I declare that my business in its foundation and entirety belongs to the Lord, I release my career, my ministry, my work and everything I put my hands to work on into the capable hands of God. I am anointed to attain mastery in my field, I carry the all-sufficient spirit of the Living God as my competitive advantage. He's my differentiation, my unique selling point and the one who blesses me. I advance by His spirit. It is impossible for me to lag behind, it is the Lord who brings me increase and capacity in my sphere of influence. I trust the Lord to show me where to cast my net for THE net breaking harvest. The Lord; The architect and Possessor of the Heavens and the Earth who reveals mysteries to them who fear Him. Opens my spirit to the secrets of enduring success in my line of work. I pivot by the spirit, I am branded in and by the spirit, I launch by the spirit , I declare my work is my worship It is my ‘workship', For I make no separation of the sacred and secular. Some call it worship but I call it “workship”, The Hebrew word for work and worship is EVED. It's the one and same word to the Lord. My entire life is worship to God, I tend and keep every garden He has placed me in And every plant and flower blooms and brings forth its fruit in season. I introduce Jesus to my world by the diligence and excellence by which I execute my tasks. My business and my works carry the very redemptive essence of God and my world is blessed for it. Betsaleel e Oholiab. Liberalità del popolo. Costruzione del tabernacolo.
“Your job for the international book expo,” my boss informed me, “is to organize an onsite radio broadcast.” I felt fear because this was new territory for me. God, I’ve never done anything like this, I prayed. Please help me. God provided resources and people to guide me: experienced technicians and broadcasters; plus reminders during the expo of details I’d overlooked. In retrospect, I know that the broadcast went well because God knew what was needed and prompted me to use the skills He’d already given me. When God calls us to a task, He also equips us for it. When He assigned Bezalel to work on the tabernacle, Bezalel was already a skilled craftsman. God further equipped him by filling him with His Spirit and with wisdom, understanding, knowledge, and all kinds of skills (Exodus 31:3). God also gave him an assistant in Oholiab, as well as a skilled workforce (v. 6). With His enablement, the team designed and made the tent, its furnishings, and the priests’ garments. These were instrumental in the Israelites’ proper worship of God (vv. 7-11). Bezalel means “in the shadow [protection] of God.” The craftsman worked on the project of a lifetime under God’s protection, power, and provision. Let’s courageously obey God’s prompting as we carry out a task to completion. He knows what we need, and how and when to give it─or even withhold it.
How do Bezalel and Oholiab give us a nice window into the life of Christ and his followers, and why does the Lord keep emphasizing the Sabbath? Click here for that and more as Dr. German walks us through another chapter of “Christianity in Exodus”!

When the Israelites were miraculously delivered by God from Egyptian bondage and slavery, they left Egypt with a vast amount of goods which was a fulfillment of scripture. Those goods were contributed by those people whose hearts were moved upon by the Holy Spirit to be used to build the tabernacle, where God himself would dwell and meet with the people. God endued two leaders, Bezelel and Oholiab, with very specific ability, intelligence and all knowledge and all craftsmanship to build the tabernacle, and he gave every able man the knowledge to perform the work under the guidance of these two leaders. In Exodus 36:6, Moses gave the command to the people to stop giving, because they'd given so much that it was much more than was needed to complete the job. The contribution, the hand-picked team, and the all-sufficiency of God are quite a winning combination.

“God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.” 1 Peter 4:10 NLT You gotta believe you got it! “It takes many parts to make a single body. That's why the eyes cannot say they don't need the hands. That's also why the head cannot say it doesn't need the feet. In fact, we cannot get along without the parts of the body that seem to be the weakest. We take special care to dress up some parts of our bodies. We are modest about our personal parts, but we don't have to be modest about other parts. God put our bodies together in such a way that even the parts that seem the least important are valuable. He did this to make all parts of the body work together smoothly, with each part caring about the others. If one part of our body hurts, we hurt all over. If one part of our body is honored, the whole body will be happy. Together you are the body of Christ. Each one of you is part of his body.” 1 Corinthians 12:20-27 CEV “There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them. There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord. There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.” 1 Corinthians 12:4-6 NIV “We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us…” Romans 12:6 NIV “Then the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, to cut and set stones, to work in wood, and to engage in all kinds of crafts. Also I have given ability to all the skilled workers to make everything I have commanded you: the tent of meeting, the ark of the covenant law with the atonement cover on it, and all the other furnishings of the tent—” Exodus 31:1-7 NIV “Let every skillful man among you come, and make all that the Lord has commanded:” Exodus 35:10 NIV
Exodus 35-36:7Ex 35: 1 Moses assembled all the congregation of the people of Israel and said to them, “These are the things that the Lord has commanded you to do. 2 Six days work shall be done, but on the seventh day you shall have a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the Lord. Whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. 3 You shall kindle no fire in all your dwelling places on the Sabbath day.”4 Moses said to all the congregation of the people of Israel, “This is the thing that the Lord has commanded. 5 Take from among you a contribution to the Lord. Whoever is of a generous heart, let him bring the Lord's contribution: gold, silver, and bronze; 6 blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen; goats' hair, 7 tanned rams' skins, and goatskins; acacia wood, 8 oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, 9 and onyx stones and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece.10 “Let every skillful craftsman among you come and make all that the Lord has commanded: 11 the tabernacle, its tent and its covering, its hooks and its frames, its bars, its pillars, and its bases; 12 the ark with its poles, the mercy seat, and the veil of the screen; 13 the table with its poles and all its utensils, and the bread of the Presence; 14 the lampstand also for the light, with its utensils and its lamps, and the oil for the light; 15 and the altar of incense, with its poles, and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense, and the screen for the door, at the door of the tabernacle; 16 the altar of burnt offering, with its grating of bronze, its poles, and all its utensils, the basin and its stand; 17 the hangings of the court, its pillars and its bases, and the screen for the gate of the court; 18 the pegs of the tabernacle and the pegs of the court, and their cords; 19 the finely worked garments for ministering in the Holy Place, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests.”20 Then all the congregation of the people of Israel departed from the presence of Moses. 26 All the women whose hearts stirred them to use their skill spun the goats' hair. 27 And the leaders brought onyx stones and stones to be set, for the ephod and for the breastpiece, 28 and spices and oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the fragrant incense. 29 All the men and women, the people of Israel, whose heart moved them to bring anything for the work that the Lord had commanded by Moses to be done brought it as a freewill offering to the Lord.30 Then Moses said to the people of Israel, “See, the Lord has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with skill, with intelligence, with knowledge, and with all craftsmanship, 32 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold and silver and bronze, 33 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, for work in every skilled craft. 34 And he has inspired him to teach, both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to do every sort of work done by an engraver or by a designer or by an embroiderer in blue and purple and scarlet yarns and fine twined linen, or by a weaver—by any sort of workman or skilled designer.Ex 36:1 “Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whom the Lord has put skill and intelligence to know how to do any work in the construction of the sanctuary shall work in accordance with all that the Lord has commanded.”2 And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every craftsman in whose mind the Lord had put skill, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to do the work. 3 And they received from Moses all the contribution that the people of Israel had brought for doing the work on the sanctuary. They still kept bringing him freewill offerings every morning, 4 so that all the craftsmen who were doing every sort of task on the sanctuary came, each from the task that he was doing, 5 and said to Moses, “The people bring much more than enough for doing the work that the Lord has commanded us to do.” 6 So Moses gave command, and word was proclaimed throughout the camp, “Let no man or woman do anything more for the contribution for the sanctuary.” So the people were restrained from bringing, 7 for the material they had was sufficient to do all the work, and more.
Justin, Michael, and Nate discuss Oholiab and Bezalel from the book of Exodus and what it means to use your abilities and skills for God.
Exodus 311 The LORD said to Moses, 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 3 and I have filled him with the Spirit of God, with ability and intelligence, with knowledge and all craftsmanship, 4 to devise artistic designs, to work in gold, silver, and bronze, 5 in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every craft. 6 And behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have given to all able men ability, that they may make all that I have commanded you: 7 the tent of meeting, and the ark of the testimony, and the mercy seat that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, 8 the table and its utensils, and the pure lampstand with all its utensils, and the altar of incense, 9 and the altar of burnt offering with all its utensils, and the basin and its stand,10 and the finely worked garments, the holy garments for Aaron the priest and the garments of his sons, for their service as priests, 11 and the anointing oil and the fragrant incense for the Holy Place. According to all that I have commanded you, they shall do.”12 And the LORD said to Moses, 13 “You are to speak to the people of Israel and say, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for this is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, that you may know that I, the LORD, sanctify you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath, because it is holy for you. Everyone who profanes it shall be put to death. Whoever does any work on it, that soul shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Six days shall work be done, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD. Whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall be put to death. 16 Therefore the people of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, observing the Sabbath throughout their generations, as a covenant forever. 17 It is a sign forever between me and the people of Israel that in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.'”18 And he gave to Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
