Babel Babble and Bearing God's Name with Josh LiemGenesis 11:1-9This week, we enter the story of the Tower of Babel with fresh eyes—exploring how language can be used to build empire or spread blessing. We'll reflect on God's surprising mercy in scattering humanity, trace the redemptive thread from Babel to Pentecost to Revelation, and consider how Jesus teaches us to bear God's name with humility, not pride. With stories of assimilation, ancient myths, and our own multicultural city in view, we'll imagine together what it means to resist assimilation and celebrate difference in the Spirit of Christ.----For reflection & discussion:When have you felt pressure to assimilate? What languages or cultural practices have shaped your identity? Read Genesis 11:1–9 again slowly. How does this story challenge common ideas about unity and civilization? When have you seen or experienced tension in church around cultural or generational differences? Why is it easier to minimize differences rather than value them? What is one step we can take and be accountable for in moving towards unity in love across differences?

How To Move Into Your Future When Your Past Catches Up With Your Present

Everyone in life comes to defining moments when they can't go back, and they don't know how to go forward. How do you react in such moments? How can you overcome panic and pressure? How can you move into a better future, the best future, when a bad past threatens to undermine you?    These were issues faced by one of the most famous characters in the Bible. There was a moment in Jacob's life where he came to a great crisis and feared for his life and for his family. But this moment became the turning point where he moved with freedom and restoration into his God-given destiny (Read Genesis 32:22-32). We see some powerful lessons from this story.  1. You need to overcome your past (Genesis 25; Genesis 27:36-41; Genesis 32:22; Luke 5:5) 2. You need to learn how to call out to God in your time of great need (Genesis 32:7; Genesis 32:9-12,24-26; Luke 18) 3. You need to change (Genesis 32:25,31; Genesis 32:28; Genesis 33:4) Apply  1. You need to overcome your past. Every one of us has a past. And at some point, unless we have overcome all the things in our past, these will catch up with us and hinder us from stepping into all God has for our future. Jacob was a deceiver by nature, who twice deceived his older brother Esau. He took advantage of his brother when he was very vulnerable, and took his birthright as the firstborn (Genesis 25). And again, with the help of his mother, Jacob deceived his father Isaac into giving him the blessing due to Esau before their father died (Genesis 27:36,41). As a result, Jacob lived 20 years on the run. He knew that Esau was coming for him. Over time, Jacob acquired wives, many children and possessions, and although he had managed to overcome many challenges in his own life, the one thing he couldn't run away from was his broken relationship with his brother. To go forward he had to overcome the past. And there came a moment when he was confronted with his past (Genesis 32:22), hearing that his brother and 400 men are coming to meet him. Jacob was petrified. Have you been fully set free from your past? What words or experiences have shaped you and made you see yourself as you do? So many people have suffered many things in their lives, including abuse, dysfunctional families and broken families, or bullying. People can be successful, but they can carry the sense of being a victim because they have been marked in their spirit by being bullied/ They can feel, however successful they are or how other people see them, that they are a fraud. So many live with imposter syndrome, just waiting to be found out that you aren't as good as people think you are. Maybe you can relate to this. What is your fear? Do you live with the fear of failure, of not making it? There may be something in your past that today you have to overcome. Because you have to overcome your past to move forward in life. Just as when Jesus told his first disciples to launch out and prepare for a big catch of fish, Peter had to overcome his mindset of past failure before he could move into his future (Luke 5:5). Many of the world's greatest inventors didn't see their failures as failures. They saw them as stepping stones for how to succeed. You can't run away from your past, and you can't let the past keep hanging around in your present. If you don't overcome your past, it will overcome and rule you. Maybe you need to be healed from the pain of grief. Unless you're healed then you will be set back. Time is not a healer, you just get better at dealing with things. But the Lord can heal your past. No matter the past financial position of your family, or past addictions or unfaithfulness in your family, you can overcome it. You can overcome the mindset of it being inevitable that certain things will just keep repeating in your family line forever. So, no matter your past, just like Jacob, you need to overcome to have a new future. 2. You need to learn how to call out to God in your time of great need. Jacob was in a time of great need, and he knew that the only God's miraculous intervention in this situation could rescue him, nothing and no one else would do (Genesis 32:7). So, Jacob prayed (Genesis 32:9-12, 24-26). Jacob called out to the God of his fathers, and reminded God of all the promises he'd received despite his unworthiness. But more than that, Jacob called on God to come and save him. Jacob wrestled with the man and refused to let him go. As far as Jacob was concerned, he was wrestling with God Himself. Jacob knew the promises of God over his life, but he was worried. And that night, he had his encounter alone. You cannot rely on your husband or wife, your parents or anyone else for the encounter that only you can receive. You have to cry out to God, and keep on until you know you have broken through. Like Jacob, it might mean a whole night in prayer, wrestling with the Lord to overcome. It may mean that you take some time off or clear your diary so that you can just pray and call out to God so that you can receive a life changing breakthrough (see story of Billy Graham and Stephen Olford). The call of God is one thing. The anointing of God is quite another. And the anointing of God comes when you say to God, ‘I will not let you go unless you bless me'. Jesus taught a parable in Luke 18 about a persistent widow who would not stop bothering the unjust judge until she received her breakthrough. We too need to have that kind of persistent faith. Decide that whatever your situation, you will call out to God with absolute determination.  3. You need to change. To overcome and walk in the way God wants us to, we have to change. Jacob had a call on his life but wasn't ready for what was to come. He needed to change. Something had to give. Something had to change. And that was Jacob himself. There were changes in 2 main areas of change. Firstly, Jacob had to be weakened to depend on God (Genesis 32:25,31). God was opening up new opportunities. But he no longer walked so self-confidently or with his previous swagger. His encounter with God had changed him. Secondly, Jacob was given a new name. Names in the Bible signify identity. So by being given a new name, God was giving him a new identity. Before he was called Jacob which meant ‘deceiver' Now he was to be known as Israel, an overcomer (Genesis 32:28). He'd broken through to another level with God and with people. And God blessed him. And God wants to do the same for you. But first God wants to change you and remove things in your nature, your past, your reactions of anger, harshness, bitterness, negative speaking or living by your emotions. When you encounter God, you will be changed, and it will be evident to others. It was a new day of change for Jacob. And it was evident to everyone afterward that Jacob had encountered the Lord and been changed because he walked with a limp afterwards, and he had a new name and new nature. He'd broken through. God had made the way for him not only to be saved, but for him to see reconciliation in his family and a new future (Genesis 33:4). Today, you can overcome your past. You can call out to God in your time of great need, and you can be changed, ready for the great future the Lord has ahead of you.

God is unwavering in His commitment to keep every promise He has made. While we wait, we are called to remain faithful, patient, steadfast, and continue to grow in character. When His promises are fulfilled, our response should be one of gratitude and worship. Join us for session nine as we see how the waiting periods are intended to f prepare us and strengthen our trust in and dependence on God. Verses Used:Hebrews 10:23Romans 4:18-22Psalm 105:16-19Psalm 105:20-22Hebrews 6:11-15Discussion Questions:It took more than twenty years for the dream that Joseph had as a young man to be fulfilled. As we wait for God to fulfill promises He's made to us, what human emotions or areas of discouragement do we struggle with?Read Genesis 21:1, 28:15, and Joshua 21:45. What do these verses tell us about God's willingness and ability to keep His promises? Why is this such a challenge to believe by faith at times? As we wait for God to answer us in a particular area, how should we wait? (See Romans 4:18-21 and Hebrews 6:15 and Hebrews 10:23)The Bible often speaks of God's perfect faithfulness (see Deuteronomy 7:9, Psalm 35:6 & 100:5, and Isaiah 25:1). To what extent do you believe that God is faithful? How would trusting in His faithfulness make it easier to wait for His promises to you to be fulfilled? What test does Joseph devise to prove whether or not his brothers are spies? Why do you think he treats his brothers this way? How does this demonstrate wisdom and discernment? As Joseph's brothers return to their father, what are they haunted by, and why do you think this is? “The whole of human existence is like some sweet parable told in the most improbable place and circumstances. … God values our humanity. … One of the things that's fascinating about the Hebrew Bible is that it declared and was loyal to the fact that God is good and creation is good.”Novelist and essayist Marilynne Robinson joins Miroslav Volf to discuss her latest book, Reading Genesis. Together they discuss why she took up this project of biblical commentary and what scripture and theological reflection means to her; how she thinks of Genesis as a theodicy (or a defense against the problem of evil and suffering); the grace of God; the question of humanity's goodness; how to understand the flood; the relationship between divine providence and working for moral progress; and much more.About Marilynne RobinsonMarilynne Robinson is an award-winning American novelist and essayist. Her fictional and non-fictional work includes recurring themes of Christian spirituality and American political life. In a 2008 interview with the Paris Review, Robinson said, "Religion is a framing mechanism. It is a language of orientation that presents itself as a series of questions. It talks about the arc of life and the quality of experience in ways that I've found fruitful to think about."Her novels include: Housekeeping (1980, Hemingway Foundation/Pen Award, Pulitzer Prize finalist), Gilead (2004, Pulitzer Prize), Home (2008, National Book Award Finalist), Lila (2014, National Book Award Finalist), and most recently, Jack (2020). The Book of Genesis begins with the creation of the universe and ends with the death of Jacob, patriarch of the Israelites. Between these two events, successive generations confront the moral tests set for them by God, and in doing so usher in the Abrahamic religious tradition. In Reading Genesis, Marilynne Robinson argues for the continued relevance of Genesis as a foundational text of Western culture. Read John 5:39,46 — In what ways does the Old Testament point to Jesus? What are some examples that you can think of? How can this reality change the way we read and understand the Old Testament? 2. Read Hebrews 12:5-6 — Why is it comforting to know that God tests and disciplines out of His love? What difference does this make in the midst of testing? 3. God tests us to show us where we are at and to grow us to become more like His Son. How have you experienced testing in your life? How did you respond? What did this reveal to you about yourself? How did it help you grow? Explain. 4. What could be an “Isaac” in your life? What in your life, if you lost it, would make life seem unbearable? What are you fearful of losing? What has become the center of life? 5. Read Genesis 22:1-14 — What from this story grabs your attention? What questions does it raise for you? What do you learn about God? What do you learn about yourself? How does this story connect to your life? 6. What connections to Jesus do you see in this story? How does this story point to Jesus and the cross? 7. Obedience to God is ALWAYS in our best interest. Agree or Disagree? 8. When have you found obedience difficult? How can this reveal “Isaac’s” (idols) in our life? 9. Read Romans 8:32 — How can this perspective give us courage to obey even when obedience seems difficult? What's your next step?Connect: We'd love to connect with you! After over a decade of slavery + prison, God pulls Joseph out of the pit & places him in the palace. After interpreting Pharaoh's dreams, Joseph is elevated to the 2nd most powerful man on planet earth. Through this story we can draw almost innumerable applications like: God has a design in delay. We can't microwave what God intends to crock-pot in our lives. Suffering is a test, but so is success. When things are going well…do we praise God, prepare for harder times ahead, walk in boldness, and step into purpose? Or do we put our lives in cruise-control and forget God? Read: Genesis 41

Read Proverbs 3: 5-6. What does this tell us about obeying theboundaries God sets for us, even if we don't fully understand why theyare important? What could happen if we don't adhere to God'sboundaries?5. Read Isaiah 55: 8-9. Have you ever applied this kind of logic whensetting boundaries for your own kids/grandkids? Read Galatians 5: 13. How does Paul instruct us to use our freedom? How might this relate to boundaries?9. Pastor Mick described boundaries as being like guard rails. What didhe mean by that? Do you agree? Why/why not?Prayer of the Week:Gracious and loving God, we thank you for the gift of boundaries. Weconfess that we don't always like them, much less obey them, but we aregrateful for them. Please help us to do better at setting and living withinhealthy boundaries, and make your presence known to us even as weexperience the consequences of living outside of those boundaries. Big Idea: King Midas could never afford what King Jesus gives freely. Genesis 26:12-25 1. Affluence won't solve all your problems. Genesis 26: 12-16 Isaac sowed seed in that land, and in that year he reaped a hundred times what was sown. The Lord blessed him, and the man became rich and kept getting richer until he was very wealthy. He had flocks of sheep, herds of cattle, and many slaves, and the Philistines were envious of him. Philistines stopped up all the wells that his father's servants had dug in the days of his father Abraham, filling them with dirt. And Abimelech said to Isaac, “Leave us, for you are much too powerful for us.” 2. Next comes a step of faith.   Genesis 26: 17-22 So Isaac left there, camped in the Gerar Valley, and lived there. Isaac reopened the wells that had been dug in the days of his father Abraham and that the Philistines had stopped up after Abraham died. He gave them the same names his father had given them. Then Isaac's servants dug in the valley and found a well of spring water there. But the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled with Isaac's herdsmen and said, “The water is ours!” So he named the well Esek because they argued with him. Then they dug another well and quarreled over that one also, so he named it Sitnah. He moved from there and dug another, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth and said, “For now the Lord has made space for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.” 3. Acceptance will satisfy your soul.     Genesis 26: 23-26 "From there he went up to Beer-sheba, and the Lord appeared to him that night and said, “I am the God of your father Abraham. Do not be afraid, for I am with you. I will bless you and multiply your offspring because of my servant Abraham.” So he built an altar there, called on the name of the Lord, and pitched his tent there. Isaac's servants also dug a well there. Next Steps: Believe: I want to be accepted into God's family today. Become: I will find fulfillment in Christ alone this week. Be Sent: I will show someone how Christ can satisfy their soul. Growth Group Questions:  1. On a scale of 1-10, how content are you right now? 2. What would it take to make that number a 10?  Why? 3. Do you know someone who is never satisfied- no matter how much they accumulate? 4. If money “Can't buy me love,” why do so many people sacrifice relationships for it? 5. Read Genesis 26:2. Why does God allow Isaac to go through hardships immediately after he promised to “bless him”? 6. What do people far from God think about Jesus when they see his people obsessed and stressed about money? 7. Pray for the Holy Spirit to give you the gift of contentment this week.

In Genesis 2, we get a close look at the events that occurred in the Garden of Eden. We get to focus on the relationship between God and man. Pastor Greg Laurie shares valuable points from this book today.  Notes: Genesis 2/Genesis 3 Elohim is the appropriate word to portray God as the Majestic Creator. Yahweh is the personal name God uses when dealing with humanity. Read: Genesis 2:7–9 God created man and breathed life into him. The word, “breathed,” is warmly personal. Genesis 2:7 Eden means, “delight.” God placed man in a real place called, Eden. Eden was hand-made by God Himself, untouched by sin and death, perfect. Adam was tasked with naming the animals. Genesis 2:20 Read: Genesis 2:18, 21–25 God created woman and brought her to the man. The word, “helper,” does not imply inferiority; it's the same term God uses to describe Himself as a helper to His people. God establishes the family and the home: A man and a woman. To have a successful marriage, you must both leave other relationships. Genesis 2:24 To have a successful marriage, the couple must cleave together. Cleave means, “to glue, to cling.” Marriage is a picture of Christ and the church! 1 Corinthians 7:32–33 Our greatest needs are not fulfilled in marriage but in Jesus! Read: Genesis 3:1–9 The devil undermines in four ways. Satan questioned God's Word. “Has God, indeed, said?” Satan added to God's Word. Genesis 3:3 God never said, “Neither shall you touch it.” Satan questioned God's love. Satan denied God's Word. Satan substituted his own lie. Every temptation can be resisted and overcome. God has a plan and purpose for you. Acts 13:36 We need to know and fulfill our purpose. Romans 8:28 Genesis means, “beginning.” The book of Genesis begins with God. Genesis 1:1 Since God created the heavens and the Earth, He is more than adequate to meet your needs. Genesis is the ground floor and foundation of the entire Bible. Without it, the rest of the Bible would be incomprehensible. Read: Genesis 1:1–10 God is triune, meaning, three-in-one—eternally existing in three persons. Genesis 3:22; Genesis 11:6 The Trinity consists of three persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. God is the Creator of all things! Created (Bara) means, “to create something out of nothing.” Only God can create; that is, call into existence that which had no existence. God has always existed. He is self-existent. He has existed from the beginning. Revelation 1:8 God created all things in six days! Genesis gives a broad-stroked painting of creation, not a photograph. The focus of Genesis is not to show us “how the heavens go,” but “how to go to Heaven.” I don't believe in the Bible because Science proves it true; I believe in the science that the Bible proves is true! God created mankind in His image. Read: Genesis 1:26–28 After each thing God created, He said, “It is good.” When God created man, He said, “It is very good.” Genesis 1:31 Read: Genesis 2:1–3 God did not rest because He was tired; He rested because He was done! The word rest in Hebrew is Shabath and it means, “cease.” “Cast all your care on Him, for He cares for you!” 1 Peter 5:7 The God who created you will bear it for you. “If you will come to Him, He will turn your night into day with a word. He will reorder your broken life with a word. He will bring form out of chaos with a word. Journey Church Sunday Worship Gathering Audio - Bozeman, Montana

Brian Priebe | Executive Pastor | December 17, 2023 Genesis 12:2 (NIV)“I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing.” Genesis 12:10-13 (NIV)Now there was a famine in the land, and Abram went down to Egypt to live there for a while because the famine was severe. As he was about to enter Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, “I know what a beautiful woman you are. When the Egyptians see you, they will say, ‘This is his wife.’ Then they will kill me but will let you live. Say you are my sister, so that I will be treated well for your sake and my life will be spared because of you.” Genesis 15:5b-6 (NIV)“Look up at the sky and count the stars—if indeed you can count them.” Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” Abram believed the Lord, and he credited it to him as righteousness. Genesis 16:1-2, 4a (NIV)Now Sarai, Abram’s wife, had borne him no children. But she had an Egyptian slave named Hagar; so she said to Abram, “The Lord has kept me from having children. Go, sleep with my slave; perhaps I can build a family through her.”Abram agreed to what Sarai said. He slept with Hagar, and she conceived. Two Main Areas of Control: Control of People Control of Environment Genesis 22:1-3 (NIV)Some time later God tested Abraham. He said to him, “Abraham!”“Here I am,” he replied. Then God said, “Take your son, your only son, whom you love—Isaac—and go to the region of Moriah. Sacrifice him there as a burnt offering on a mountain I will show you.”Early the next morning Abraham got up and loaded his donkey. He took with him two of his servants and his son Isaac. When he had cut enough wood for the burnt offering, he set out for the place God had told him about. Genesis 22:6-8 (NIV)Abraham took the wood for the burnt offering and placed it on his son Isaac, and he himself carried the fire and the knife. As the two of them went on together, Isaac spoke up and said to his father Abraham, “Father?”“Yes, my son?” Abraham replied.“The fire and wood are here,” Isaac said, “but where is the lamb for the burnt offering?”Abraham answered, “God himself will provide the lamb for the burnt offering, my son.” And the two of them went on together. James 4:13-16 (NIV)Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. Instead, you ought to say, “If it is the Lord’s will, we will live and do this or that.” As it is, you boast in your arrogant schemes. All such boasting is evil. Reflection Questions: 1. Read Genesis 22:1-18. Discuss Abraham's trust in God's provision in challenging circumstances.2. Share the areas of your life where controlling your own plan is easier than trusting God's plan.3. Read James 4:13-16. What is James' criticism and his expectation for how we go about day to day?4. On Sunday, we come to the Lord's Day, a day that many have termed the Christian Sabbath. Going back to the time of Constantine, the Sabbath has been treated as a day of physical rest. In fact, our own country established it as day of rest, complete with blue laws, to honor the Sabbath and keep it holy. Yet, is that what Genesis 2:1–3 means when God says that he blessed the seventh day and made it holy? On Sunday, we are going to consider those very things. In Genesis, the seventh day should be something assigned to the opening prologue (Genesis 1:1–31). As Genesis goes, the book of the generations of the heavens and the earth begins in Genesis 2:4 and goes through Genesis 4:26. In Genesis, the whole book is built around ten statements of the generations. But before that Genesis 1:1–2:3 is a section that introduces the whole of creation in seven days. As I will try to show on Sunday, man was created on Day 6 *for* Day 7. That means that Day 6 was not the pinnacle of creation, Day 7 was. But what was Day 7 for? That is what we will consider on Sunday as we consider how this final day of the creation week culminated God's very good creation. Even more, we will see how this day promises rest for all those who find Jesus Christ, the Lord of the Sabbath. Truly, if you are feeling weary and heavy laden, if the burdens of life and sin are plaguing you, this message about God's gift of rest is something you will want to hear. To prepare for Sunday, take time to Read Genesis 1:1–2:4. But also read Psalm 92 and Hebrews 4 and pray that the Lord would give you rest in Christ, who is bringing new creation glory to all those who are being remade in his image. This is what holiness looks like and it is something we will consider in detail on Sunday. As the Lord allows, I look forward to seeing you this Lord's Day.For His Glory and your joy in Jesus,Pastor DavidAs a reminder, the County Center Community Group is in our overflow downstairs this Sunday.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Discussion & Response Questions (Genesis 2:1-3)Discussion Questions for Genesis 2:1–31. Mark continued in the series on Genesis with a focus on addressing context in the creation story. 1. Translation and context: Written for us but to ancient Israel in ancient Hebrew vocabulary, culture, and understanding. The ancients used their common sense to explain the creation. 2. Cosmos and Moses: Moses grew up in Pharaoh's house and was instructed in Egyptian and Mesopotamian culture.  Moses learned gods had various functions in creation. Babylon had other gods to explain creation. 3. Fresh look of Genesis 1 in context: The earth was without form and was void. God speaks and forms, then fills it. Without God forming and filling our lives, we are without form and living in empty chaos. God first formed the earth in the first 3 days then subsequently filled it the following 3 days. Homework. Read Genesis 1:1 thru 2:3 Points for home --God is speaking -God will form and fill your days -God will form and fill your days Don't go In reverse Listen to Mark point out how the Bible needs to be taken in context from the original language for proper understanding.

The Bible says all have sinned and fallen short of the glory of God. That means we've all done things we are not proud of, and sometimes that makes a gag at the thought of who we once were. What's worst, is that some of us have to deal with people that look down on us because of our past, making it even harder to overcome the shame. Let's talk about it.   Read: Genesis 3:6–8; 1 John 3:20; Ephesians 1:3–5   Also read “Breaking the Power of Shame” by Jon Bloom on Desiringgod.org   Poetry jam feedback: https://forms.gle/faQo7x6scE4bghQi6   Bible Study Sign up: https://forms.gle/qqukxBcKqpFtpqEb8   Submit a Question of a Topic Suggestion: https://www.un-associated.com/askchurchboy/

Genesis 1-11 is the big view of where everything came from and why things are the way they are. In Genesis 12 we shift. Moses has led the Jews out of Egypt and is introducing them to their God. Not a first introduction, but now a very thorough introduction from Genesis to Deuteronomy. God is going to use Genesis 12-50 to tell them where they came from and why there are His special people. And that starts today with understanding God’s covenant with Abraham and the Jews. The verses we are about to read referred to as the Abrahamic Covenant. Read Genesis 12:1-5; 15:6-18.

What is your view of God? Getting curious about the fullness and the reality of God shapes the way you relate to God, yourself, and others. You need to know God, but more than that, God wants you to know him! When God is only your friend, your friendship can diminish appreciation and awareness of the holiness of God, missing the new and miraculous things he is up to. When God is only majestic and holy, he can feel distant, inaccessible, and condemning. The reality of God is that he is both big and close. Read Genesis 1 this week, and you'll get to know God as Creator of all. He is big! Then, in Genesis 3, you'll see the same God walk in the cool of the day in the very garden he created. He is close. How could a both/and view of God change your pace, your prayers, and your perspective?

THE THESIS: The Global Left is harnessing victim driven movements into one evil, insatiable force animated by covetous revenge. When there are enough victims coalesced to form a political power base, sociopaths often appear as the face of the movement. Victim driven movements always end in violence. A single, God-led movement is the only solution to forestall the violence on a mass scale. THE SCRIPTURE & SCRIPTURAL RESOURCES: The New Testament makes clear how we are to treat the least of these and that is as we would treat the Lord Jesus Himself Matthew 25:4040 “The King will reply, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did for one of the least of these brothers and sisters of mine, you did for me.”It also rejected a victim-lead movement of revenge against the Romans, something many Jewish people craved. In the eyes of the Lord, we are all hurt by the same affliction, sin. Why Was the Messiah Expected to Free Israel from Rome? When Jesus arrived, God's purpose was not to save his nation so they could disobey him again and fall into slavery once more. He wanted them to be saved for all time from their biggest enemy — sin.God is of order, not chaos. The enemy thrives upon chaos, victim lead movements thrive on chaos. Here's something surprising: the story of Christmas relates to a time before Christ's birth. Pastor Greg Laurie explains just how and leaves us with a stronger appreciation for the holiday. Listen in! Notes This story of redemption, the Christmas story,  started a long time ago in a garden—and it began with a tree. The tree of the Knowledge of God and Evil. “The woman was convinced. The fruit looked so fresh and delicious, and it would make her so wise. So she ate some of the fruit.” —Genesis 3:6 The Lord gives the first Christmas verse, not Isaiah 9:6 or Micah 5:2 but Genesis 3:15 where God speaks directly to Satan. God the Father was effectively saying, “Satan, there is coming One who will crush you.” Jesus would be born to die so that we might live. The shadow of the cross lay over the beauty of that first Christmas night. The Pharaoh tried to exterminate the Jews, starting with the Hebrew baby boys. The wicked Haman tried to have the Jews wiped off the face of the earth. King Herod, hearing that One was born “The King of the Jews,” tried to kill Jesus. Nothing will stop Christ from coming again! Jesus being God, pre-existed, and He, along with the Holy Spirit and the Father, are co-equal and co-eternal. From our perspective on Earth: Unto us, a child is born. From Heaven's perspective: Unto us, a Son is given. Jesus is in the Old Testament, concealed, and in the New Testament, revealed. A Theophany is an appearance of God. A Christophany is an appearance of Christ before Bethlehem. Note: It was not an angel of the Lord but the angel of the Lord. “Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil; For You are with me; Your rod and staff they comfort me.” —Psalm 23:4 A shepherd has two tools: a rod and a staff. Read: Genesis 32:24–30 Never be afraid to commit an unknown future to a known God. Something changed in the heart of Jacob. He went from wanting to win to worshipping, from fighting to surrendering, from wrestling to nestling. Jesus has always been there, and He will always be there in the future. Even when we sometimes forget about Him, He never for a moment forgets us. Scripture Referenced Isaiah 9:6 Isaiah 43:2 --- Learn more about Greg Laurie and Harvest Ministries at harvest.org.
