Welcome to the Rocky Mtn Mixdown podcast where we discuss and document the making of the Colorado music scene. On this week's episode, hosts Kenny Vasko and Liz Vasko are paling around with former Dog House members and current Dog House hall-of-famers Eddie and Justin of Colorado-based Big Dopes. Big Dopes' music evokes the loose, lighthearted feel of 90s alternative and indie with detours into loungey 60s-indebted pop. Lead songwriter Eddie uses a playful, conversational baritone to sing through neuroses about long-distance relationships, being a houseguest, and wasting money on busted headphones. Veteran drummer Ricky lends a steady groove and harmonies, and Justin's bass often takes the lead, playing energetic, melodic lines. Paul, who joined in 2019, plays tasteful guitar, violin, and keys. Big Dopes' second album Destination Wedding came out in November 2021 and was recorded in 2020 during the heart of the pandemic. The band recorded the album in Denver while two bandmates were living out-of-state, making the recording process an "interesting" but also deeply fulfilling experience. The band recently played their first shows at Denver's iconic Bluebird Theater (with Tokyo Police Club) and Gothic Theater, both of which being major achievements and benchmarks in the group's career. Big Dopes is currently working on a vinyl release for the new album, (projected for this summer) and continue to get together for weekly writing sessions to work on new music! If you're listening from the (currently frigid) midwest, look out for Big Dopes' spring midwest tour April 7th through 16th! You can find the Rocky Mtn Mixdown podcast on Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, and at doghousemusic.com/rockymtnmixdown. **This episode features the premiere of "Sunday Afternoon" at the end of the interview** Float Like A Buffalo is quickly becoming a household name in Denver and beyond. The 7-piece funk/rock outfit put out their rookie full-length in 2019, and since then has performed on pretty much every major stage in Denver metro including: Red Rocks, Levitt Pavilion, and The Gothic Theater. They were also crowned "Best Funk Band" in Denver Westword's 2019 Music Awards. This is the most people I've ever had on the podcast! In fact, before The Movers & Shakers (episode 33) it had never been more than just me and one person on the other side of the mic. Because of that, I do highly recommend watching this episode on YouTube. There is audio and video so you can see who is speaking at all times (and also see who has the best facial hair). It can be found on my YouTube channel: http://www.youtube.com/asydow19 This episode is also a "part 2" of sorts to last weeks conversation with Alyssa Montaño and Sarah Shuel. Alyssa and Sarah are both the brains and brawn behind the Rocky Mountain Virtual Music Festival, which started as an outlet for musicians and fans alike stuck in quarantine. Alyssa is dating Luke Story of FLAB (not present in this interview, and he just turned 30 a couple days ago... HBD!!). Sarah is the band manager and is dating Corey Pearman (is present in this interview, and is rocking a commendable "quaran-stash"). Since I started this podcast in August of 2018, I've had an ongoing list of people I want to interview. Ryan Chrys was one of the first people I wrote on that list, and we finally made it happen! I have a lot of respect for Ryan as he's someone who after years of performing in different bands, is still pounding the pavement and touring heavily as if he is to be forever 22 years old. It's hard to be a DIY touring musician, but Ryan and his band (Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts) continue to play well over 100 dates a year and have coined the term, "modern outlaw country." I had a great time chatting with Ryan about his experiences, successes and failures in the music biz. I really believe in his band and their music, so please listen to the show then go CHECK OUT THEIR MUSIC! Links at the bottom of the page. If you enjoy the episode, please let others know, subscribe or write a review. 5 star ratings and reviews on Apple Music help us out a lot! SHOW CORRECTIONS: This episode was scheduled to air on Thursday, January 2, but because of the holiday we missed our deadline and had to release it the following Thursday (January 9). Because of this, the promotion of Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts show with Shane Smith & The Saints at the Gothic Theater on January 4 is out dated. My apologies! Channeling chaos into art, Sharone erupted onto the Denver music scene as a solo artist in 2014 playing local DIY venues; since then she has gone on to play venues such as Marquis Theater, Bluebird Theater, and Gothic Theater, playing festivals, and opening for bands such as One-Eyed-Doll, The Birthday Massacre, Fuel, Saving Abel, Davey Suicide, Tantric, Hell’s Belles, and Stitched Up Heart. The atmospheric and melodramatic music of Evanescence and the psychedelic blues of Black Sabbath inspired Sharone to start performing her music live, and to eventually release her 2017 demo album, Storm. Despite sustaining a dark and nearly melancholy tone on recordings, the gothic artist’s live shows are nothing short of energetic, full of heavy piano riffs, pulsing rhythms, and enthralling theatrics. From emerging from a coffin to jumping off of monitors and captivating contortions, Sharone captures the interest of each audience member through her piercing stage chemistry with her live musicians, and her ever-growing theatrics. In the spring of 2017, the singer left her mark on the Denver music scene with the release of her first rock album ‘Storm’. Following the release, underwent a complete lineup change in her band, and came back stronger than ever with the reincarnation of her dark sound: ‘Enchiridion of Nightmares’ (2018). Sharone followed up the release with three exhilarating summer and fall tours, reaching audiences across the western, central, and eastern United States, and is currently working on her third studio album. This unique rock artist is destined for success in the metal and goth rock realm. Sharone's third studio album, 'Reflection', is out NOW

Good evening Ladies and Gents! It is hard to believe it has been SIX YEARS since we stopped doing these little nuggets of goodness...For this next first time out of the gate I am including some tasty treats from the start of spring tour 1999.The band is feeling firey right of the gate in Philly - in particular, listen for JBs vocal embellishments during the second chorus of Let's Get Down to Business. The quintessential Pleas > Chilly from Salem features a lazy jammy intro to Pleas that was indicative of how the band would get things going in Spring '99.Get excited about 1999, because I am going to be featuring a few more tracks from this under-appreciated Spring Tour in future weeks!I finish everything off with a couple of selections from the Stockholm Syndrome tour of 2004 at the Gothic in Denver Colorado. Stockholm Syndrome is a side project of David Schools featuring Jerry Joseph on guitar and vocals, Eric McFadden on lead guitar, Wally Ingram on drums and Danny Dziuk on keys. Their version of North is driving and includes a ZZ Top tease while their funky version of Coudn't Get it Right features a Down on the Farm tease. And finally, please tell your friends and neighbors we are back.
