April Greetings Glocal Citizens! As you listen to this week's episode you may catch a hint of showers as part of the sound track for this conversation with long-time collaborator, Takoradi, Ghana's own Francis Brown. As the saying goes, showers bring flowers and in this two-part conversation we're definitely cultivating a bouquet of beauty and insights. Francis is one of the first professionals that I worked with when I arrived in Ghana; at that times he was a student at Ghana's National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) (https://nafti.edu.gh/p/). Since then, his career has flourished as founder and creative director of AnimaxFYB Studios in Ghana. He is an award-winning filmmaker trained in a number of different cinematic mediums, and has over ten years experience in the audio-visual industry. He is a member of the International Academy of Arts and Sciences (EMMY), a Jury at MIPCOM in Cannes and a frequent speaker on different film and television forums around the world. He was shortlisted for the 42nd Student Academy Awards (Oscars), won Best Animation Film at the Africa International Film Festival 2016 (AFFRIF), Best Creative Artist 2017 at the Black British Entertainment Awards, animator of the year at the 2017 Ghana UK Based Awards (GUBA) and also Best Animation at the 2018 Ghana Movie Awards. In 2019, face2face Africa named him one of the five African animators who can give their Hollywood counterparts a run for the money. In 2021, his short 3D animated film ‘ROOM 5' was nominated at Annecy International Animation Film Festival making him the only West African director to be nominated for the year and one of four films from Africa. He is a regular feature at Meta Cinema Forum, the largest Africa and Middle East film and cinema convention. He is also a planning committee member and artistic director of the Afrotino music festival where Latino and African performers will be meeting in a series of cross-country concerts in Panama, Costa Rica, Colombia and Mexico. Transgender Acceptance in Our Culture   How do cultural issues affect sexuality and sex education? Dr. Mark Schoen, founder of Sex Smart Films—the “Netflix of Sex Education”—has the answers. The website, with more than 650 films, is divided into sections on Research, Therapy, and Education. We focused on Education, which provides accurate information on a very wide range of sexual and gender issues. The 3-minute animated film “'What's Gay?' Asked Mae”, directed by Mark Schoen and based on the book of the same name by Brian McNaught, recently won the award for BEST ANIMATION at the 2022 LGBTQ+ Toronto Film Festival. (The answer to the question: It is a way to love.)   Cori, an M-to-F trans person, joined the conversation. Offering her articulate and poignant personal observations, she spoke of her transitioning journey. She shared her motivations, fears, and lessons of self-evolution. Cori had viewed Dr. Mark's award-winning film “TRANS” and was brought to tears. For so many others the film truly resonated: there are more than 250 reviews (average 4.5 stars out of 5) on the Amazon page for “TRANS” (available on DVD and Prime Video). One reviewer observed, “One of the best documentaries I've ever watched. For anyone with a loved one or someone they care about who is transgender, this film will educate and inform you. It also happens to be very moving. Nothing is sugar-coated here, but I also did not walk away with a feeling of despondency.”   Yes, there is hope!  Especially if you have more information which can be empowering. One academic observed after viewing “TRANS”: “Who the fuck would choose this?”   There are, of course, roadblocks. The Florida legislators recently passed the “Don't Say Gay” bill. It has been used as a vehicle to marginalize and attack LGTBQ people. And it sends a terrible message to our youth that there is something wrong with them. Now the bill is standing between children and their teachers and doctors.   Please tune in to hear two authentic, passionate guests – Dr. Mark and Cori! Mark Schoen asks, “What can we do to make it more acceptable?” The program is filled with ideas. An important one is that sexual orientation education should be taught early on. (The Scandinavian countries have sex ed for children five and up.) Then, we might enjoy more acceptance and less anxiety!

It has been shot across Mumbai, Delhi, Patna, Dehradun, Kanpur and a few villages in Maharashtra and Bihar.About The Invisible VisibleTHE INVISIBLE VISIBLE is a poignant 'Impact' documentary-feature on the estimated 70 million homeless people in India. It draws attention towards these 'invisibles' and seeks to 'visibilize' them. The sordid stories of the homeless people humanizes them and depicts how poverty has been criminalised under an archaic, draconian law in India. The stories unfold through the lens of India's leading crusaders - TARIQUE MOHAMMED, and his organisation members who have dedicated their lives for the homeless and destitute. The fight against injustice and violence is an ongoing one and THE INVISIBLE VISIBLE has some call to actions.Check the trailer now: https://youtu.be/Paqgtj7kq5gKireet Khurana BiographyKireet Khurana is an Indian animator. This film has not one, BUT TWO, power ballads from our title character who is wise, brave and badass. Do I listen to these songs as pump up songs on a weekly basis? INDEED. We applaud these creators!    Completed in 2011, Worlds Apart tells the story of a young Central California family caught in an unimaginable situation caused by climate change. Told through the eyes of a child's teddy bear, Worlds Apart is part cautionary fairytale and part science fiction thriller. The film has garnered fifteen Best Animation awards from festivals around the globe. Many amazingly talented students worked for two years to complete this film. This version of Worlds Apart features an excellent film score by Chad Seiter. Having worked on films such as The Incredibles and Ratatouille, Chad was the perfect person to undertake the score and orchestration for Worlds Apart. For the final recording Chad assembled some of the most talented musicians in Hollywood, this included artists from the LA Philharmonic. This is the third film written, produced, and directed by Michael Zachary Huber.

Director & animator Jamil Lahham joined us in part 1 of this conversation where we discussed winning an Oscar, working on Cloudy With A Chance of Meatballs and what is a bad film? In the second part of our live show, Jamil tells us about his attempt at stand-up comedy, his award winning animation and the attitude needed to complete those personal projects. Jamil tells about his short Dirty Laundry Day which recently won Best Animation at the Filmmaker International Film Festival in Spain. Chris was inspired by Jamil’s blog about his short especially, “Do ANYTHING a day.” Jamil says you have to struggle with your brain. You have to stop yourself from quitting sometimes. For example, seeing student animations from the French schools of Supinfocom or Gobelins should be inspiring, not a deterrent. Paul quotes Merlin Mann about setting priorities and being who you want to be. Paul loves the sound design in Dirty Laundry Day and Jamil shares that it was done by Chris Kukla. Jamil was incredibly happy with Christina Ellis, who did amazing work with the color of Dirty Laundry Day. Some of Jamil’s CG inspiration comes from Pocoyo, a Spanish-British animated series. Jamil suggests that we watch Anomalisa, a gorgeous stop-motion film. There you have it! You can find the award-winning animator and all around inspiring dude, Jamil Lahham on Twitter or at his personal blog. Just like in nature you can’t force a tree to grow, you can’t force children to be who they are not meant to be. Surrendering ego and letting go allows amazing things to unfold in the life of the child . . . as well as the parent.Adults struggle to find their purpose and live the life they want to present to the world: mind, body and spirit all illuminated to shine onto others while shining bright inside yourself and your home.Bringing this awareness to children so they won’t need to face the same challenges you have is the greatest gift you can give to your child. Singer-Songwriter and author Nancy Geittier finds inspiration in each of her children to write entertaining and educational stories. Whimsical and fun, each of her children's books have a holistic approach with educational twists. Nancy has produced an award-winning short film based on Mermaids on Mars complete with her original songs. It has been invited to and won various film festivals including Best Animated Short at the Carmel International Film Festival, Best Animation at the LA Underground Film Festival, LA Children's Film Festival and others.  This will likely inspire a full-length film and a TV series, according to the author.
