Sarah was taught how to knit by her mum when she was eight and was then forever knitting jumpers, cuddly Clangers and even an outfit for her guinea pig that it sensibly refused to wear. After working as a stylist, writer and designer for many years, an idea formulated in Sarah's mind for a knitted village full of eccentric British characters - a misspent childhood watching Thunderbirds and Carry On Films may have contributed to this. At first the village was more of a traditional affair but after reading an article about free hiking (hiking in the nude) Sarah's villagers lost their clothes and nudinits was born.Sarah then collaborated with animator Ed Hartwell to make her first film, 'Tickled Pink' which went on to win a Best Comedy and a Best Animation award and nudinits have never looked back. They've now become an online hit with further films, awards and lots of nudinit products to enjoy including books with knitting patterns for the much loved characters and their accessories. Our very own Greg Franklin just won the Best Director, Animation award at the Jane Austen International Film Festival for the short film THE WHISTLE, which also took home the award for Best Animation! Congratulations Greg! So to celebrate, Greg is programming this episode, but he's not letting the prestige go to his head! He's bringing on the MIDCENTURY SLEAZE in what he promises is a return to this podcast's exploitation roots after we sunk to new highs in our last episode with NATIONAL VELVET. First, the immortal Tura Satana and her gang of fast-drivin', karate-choppin' go-go dancers cut a swath of mayhem through the Mojave Desert in boob-meister Russ Meyer's masterpiece FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! (1965). This is Meyer's first appearance on the podcast, which only confirms Greg's assertions that we've lost our way over here. FASTER, PUSSYCAT! KILL! KILL! is streaming on Roku Channel. Then, we dig ourselves even deeper underground with SINS OF THE FLESHAPOIDS (1965), a bit of microbudget weirdness from the bizarre minds of brothers Mike and George Kuchar. This sci-fi dystopia takes place a million years in the future when lazy-assed humans leave all the work to human-like robots called fleshaopids. Can these discount androids find love? It only takes 45-minutes to find out--a major selling point for Philena. SINS OF THE FLESHAPOIDS is streaming on tubi. John Waters has called both of Greg's picks "the best movie ever made," which is refreshing after all the horse movies and hippie musicals. In our opening segment, Greg tells us more about THE WHISTLE, and we discuss the ongoing end of TikTok and Stan Lee's AI avatar--coming to a comic con near you! NEXT EPISODE: Cory is on tour so cannabis comic Ngaio Bealum returns for our HALLOWEED EPISODE with ABBOTT AND COSTELLO MEET FRANKENSTEIN (1948) and Vincent Price in THE ABOMINABLE DR. PHIBES (1971). April Greetings Glocal Citizens! As you listen to this week's episode you may catch a hint of showers as part of the sound track for this conversation with long-time collaborator, Takoradi, Ghana's own Francis Brown. As the saying goes, showers bring flowers and in this two-part conversation we're definitely cultivating a bouquet of beauty and insights. Francis is one of the first professionals that I worked with when I arrived in Ghana; at that times he was a student at Ghana's National Film and Television Institute (NAFTI) (https://nafti.edu.gh/p/). Since then, his career has flourished as founder and creative director of AnimaxFYB Studios in Ghana. He is an award-winning filmmaker trained in a number of different cinematic mediums, and has over ten years experience in the audio-visual industry. He is a member of the International Academy of Arts and Sciences (EMMY), a Jury at MIPCOM in Cannes and a frequent speaker on different film and television forums around the world. He was shortlisted for the 42nd Student Academy Awards (Oscars), won Best Animation Film at the Africa International Film Festival 2016 (AFFRIF), Best Creative Artist 2017 at the Black British Entertainment Awards, animator of the year at the 2017 Ghana UK Based Awards (GUBA) and also Best Animation at the 2018 Ghana Movie Awards. In 2019, face2face Africa named him one of the five African animators who can give their Hollywood counterparts a run for the money. In 2021, his short 3D animated film ‘ROOM 5' was nominated at Annecy International Animation Film Festival making him the only West African director to be nominated for the year and one of four films from Africa. He is a regular feature at Meta Cinema Forum, the largest Africa and Middle East film and cinema convention.
