Creative Blocks & Quiet Belief

This week, I open up about the creative block I've been working through—the kind that makes you question if all your effort is even worth it. It's that strange contradiction of knowing you're not alone in the struggle, yet still feeling isolated in the process. But a Reel I came across changed my perspective. It featured Gilberto Marquez, a hat maker from LA, who spoke about pursuing a dream that hadn't materialized yet—making a clean Tejana that a famous artist would wear on stage. He said something that stuck with me: sometimes you repeat to yourself that it's never going to happen, that maybe you don't deserve it… until the universe has no option but to prove you wrong.I reflect on how much I relate to that mindset, and how a recent track day with Albert reignited some of that creative fire. We talked about what's possible, what we're building, and how even the smallest wins can carry momentum.Advice for this episode:You're allowed to be proud of the little things you achieve. Not everything you do has to be life-changing.Stay Golden y'all

Starting with the salutary opening voice over: “The Sir Douglas Quintet is back, we'd like to thank all our beautiful friends all over the country and all the beautiful vibrations, we love you…” - this Tex-Mex, flower-power rave up let's you know that you're in for a groovy ride. Doug Sahm's Tejana inflected combo from the borderlands broke up after their weed bust, and he relocated to the Bay Area where his head was turned around by the Hippies up there. Inspired by what he was experiencing, he re-recruited 3 of his original compatriots, including his childhood friend, the sizzling Vox organist, Augie Myers, and they produced this powerful tribute to the Northern California scene. I didn't know much about this group, and what I did know was fabricated. They were dubbed The Sir Douglas Quintet by their record producer in order to capitalize on the British Invasion juggernaut that was happening in '65, and their first single, She's About a Mover struck gold. That's all I knew until I heard this anthem with its indelible organ riff, and then my radar was properly installed. Years later, when Sundazed released The Mono Singles '68-'72 I immediately bought it and it overstimulated my CD player. What a collection! Every cut is a gem.The one time child prodigy who appeared with Hank Williams at the age of 12, before the Hillbilly Shakespeare met his untimely fate, also died too young. Doug Sahm was only 58 when he passed, but he left behind a trove of unforgettable music.

Christine Valters Paintner is joined by author Claudia Love Mair for a series of video conversations. Each month they take up a new book by or about a voice of color. The community is invited to purchase and read the books in advance and participate actively in this journey of deepening, discovery, and transformation. This month they are joined by Leticia Ochoa Adams to discuss her book Our Lady of Hot Messes: Getting Real with God in Dive Bars and Confessionals. Leticia Ochoa Adams met Jesus in a dive bar when she was eighteen years old. She didn't actually meet Jesus, but it was there where she first witnessed holiness in action. The bar's regulars taught her about the importance of community, being honest about who she is, not giving up on people, and how to laugh—even when awful things happen. In Our Lady of Hot Messes, Ochoa Adams tells the ongoing story of her redemption. At times funny and heartbreaking, but always gritty and unflinchingly honest, her story shows that no matter what you're dealing with, God wants you to trust in his love. The Tejana daughter of a single mother—a cycle she would repeat in her own life—Ochoa Adams was sexually abused as a child. She married after a two-week courtship and, eight years later, divorced her husband who struggled with drug addiction. In between she suffered a late-term miscarriage and had three more children back-to-back. She always thought a dream life meant having a big house, kids, lots of money, and new cars. Since she hadn't yet cracked the code for the American dream, “I turned to the person that every American woman turns to when looking for a way to make a better life for herself: Oprah.” Watching the daytime talk show queen helped Ochoa Adams put a name to what happened to her as a child. But she was still searching for something more. Ochoa Adams was baptized Catholic but attended a small-town Baptist church growing up. When she reverted to Catholicism at age thirty-three in order to marry her second husband, Ochoa Adams was convinced that Catholics had all of the answers to life's toughest questions. But she quickly learned that becoming Catholic didn't mean she could just erase her bad choices and difficult past. And just when she thought she was getting her life together, her son, Anthony, died by suicide. God, therapy, and caring priests helped her face her pain and heal her brokenness. She wants you to see yourself in her mistakes, learn from them, and realize along with her that even when we've put our trust in God—even if it's begrudgingly—we still have to do the tough work to become the person God wants us to be. “I still make mistakes,” she says, “but I'm trying not to live as a hot mess even when things around me are messy.” AbbeyoftheArts.com/Lift-Every-Voice

Our analysis of Josefina's books begins with two powerful questions—first, given the place and time, is this the story of a colonial girl? Second, just how many references to Tejana queen Selena will we make per episode? While representations of imperialism in early American history are hard to unpack, over the course of this show, we'll reveal why Meet Josefina had us reeling for still other reasons. Maybe you didn't see how this book set in an 1820s borderland community (what's now New Mexico) was essentially ripped from the 1990s melodrama THE PIANO. Each work addresses cultural, historical, political, and gender realities that she experienced from her childhood to the present. The plays, set in the Central Texas Blackland Prairies where Acosta was raised, provide a unique Latina vision of memory, identity, and experience and are a vital contribution to Chicana feminist thought. The essays focus on Acosta's literary heroes Jovita González de Mireles, Sara Estela Ramírez, and Elena Zamora O'Shea, important writers who contributed significantly to Tejana literature and to Texas letters. The children's story, "Colchas, Colchitas," is based on Acosta's most notable poem, "My Mother Pieced Quilts," which pays homage to her mother and the many women of her generation who employed needles and thread, creating both practical and symbolic artifacts. This collection is a creative and, indeed, essential expansion of boundaries for what we think of as history, offering a unique and compelling look into the lived experiences and interior contemplations of a Texas artist well worth knowing. Readers will increase their understanding of Tejana experience in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. Tejanaland promises to become an important addition to the cultural record, informing historical perspectives on the experiences of Tejana women and contributing significantly to the existing body of work from Tejana writers. In the wake of protests and marches for racial and gender justice in the twenty-first century, scholars have located and argued that racial violence has been embedded in the very fabric of the United States since its inception. In Drs. Sonia Hernández and John Morán González recent anthology, Reverberations of Racial Violence: Critical Reflections on the History of the Border (U Texas Press, 2021), the editors and contributors cement the issue that state-sanctioned violence affected the Mexican community in the Texas-Mexico borderlands. The volume brings together eminent researchers of Mexican American and borderlands studies to showcase the varying ways the Tejana/o community navigated and challenged state-encouraged violence in the early twentieth century. The book consists of fourteen essays to illustrate the formation of the Refusing to Forget collective, the influence that the Texas Rangers held in Texas, lynching and extralegal violence in Mexico and the United States, educational justice, the Idar family, J.T. Canales and his 1919 investigation into the Texas Ranger Force, intergenerational trauma, public memory and public history exhibits, family history in South Texas, and the legacies of violence. The volume is a critical addition to Latina/o/x and borderlands studies, given its thoughtful and exceptionally argued premise that the reverberations of racial violence extend well into the Southwest region of the United States. She draws from her North American roots in Texas Folk, Latin Jazz, and New Age. Her rhythmic music includes the Afro-Caribbean rhythms of Cuba's son, danzon and boleros; the valses and baladas of Mexico; the trova, cumbia and merengue beats of South and Central America; and Brazil's bossa nova and samba. ALBUM BORDERLAND (EXTRA Info) Border Land is a raw, exquisite global folk album that speaks directly to exigent political issues of our time. It is also a musical map for transcending the social atomization of the contemporary moment to find community and to act collectively. She depicts the story of how her parents were the trailblazers in the town they came to know as their home. As a fellow Tejana we were able to relate on how at times we were disconnected from our fellow peers. From being terrible at pop culture to sometimes not understanding certain words. We had a deep conversation on how being a Latina also comes with constraints from our own people on what we should and shouldn't do. We definitely let it all out and discuss how we should not be asking for permission on how we should be defined. We also discovered that we haven't really discussed these feelings with anybody else. It definitely felt good to let that baggage out. Ultimately, we came to the conclusion that we should be able to put "child to immigrant parents' on our resume. Listen to this episode and I invite you to seek whatever weight  you been carrying as a child to immigrant parents.
