Mike Johnston was living the dream. His band was signed to a major label. He was touring the world, playing for thousands of adoring fans, and making good money. But something was missing. He didn't know what, until a friend told him how happy he looked when he was teaching drums, rather than performing. That's when he figured out he has an "educator's soul." So he stepped back from the band and taught drums full time. It was exhausting, and this income potential was capped by the hours in the week. To make up for a lesson, he recorded a session and dumped it onto a fledgling website called "YouTube." That's where everything changed. Today, Mike's drum instruction videos reach millions of curious enthusiasts and dedicated musicians. He uses YouTube and his website to teach exponentially more people than he could possibly address with in-person lessons alone. Back in 2006/2007, he risked his entire career to build drum education the way *he* wished he could learn. The big unknown was whether others wanted it, too. (Narrator: They did.) This week, Matt sits down with Mike to discuss the fascinating evolution of online music lessons, where he gets his inspiration for new lessons, why he never watches other drum lesson videos, and why he's not afraid of AI taking his job. The DIY spirit is alive and well this week with Mo Lowda & The Humble sitting in for a full band interview — and it was a total blast. I chatted with longtime friends and bandmates Jordan Caiola, Shane Woods, Jeff Lucci and Kirby Sybert and talked all about the easy-going yet hard working band dynamics that have kept this tight-knit group of musicians rolling along for over a decade now.  Their fourth album, the 2023 self-titled release, is their best yet, and the self-produced Mo Lowda talked to me about their commitment to the DIY ethos, how far they've come, as well as the ups and downs of being the ultimate indie road warriors. Having an entire band on the show always produces tons of laughs and this interview was no exception. It was a fun, Green Room-style hang, and we also go deep into the band's roots, tracking the progression from a Philly “basement band,” to consistently packing out major venues across the country.  This is a fun-filled episode that I know you're going to love!!For more information on Roadcase: https://linktr.ee/roadcasepod and https://www.roadcasepod.comOr contact Roadcase by email:  info@roadcasepod.comRoadcase theme music:  "Eugene (Instrumental)" by Waltzer

In this episode, Jay Miller from Kyber discusses the unique origin story of their marketing agency, which started as a means to support their band while on tour. They delve into how Kyber has evolved into a successful business and the impact it has on their work culture and client interactions. Jay shares his agency's approach of leveraging his extensive network, focusing on sales, embracing remote work opportunities, and working with tech companies. Additionally, he reveals three valuable lessons he has learned along his journey. Kyber Marketing Agency's journey showcases its differentiation and long-term success.Meet Jay Miller, the Chief Executive Officer of Kyber Digital LLC, a pioneering growth marketing consulting firm specializing in momentum-based marketing strategies. With a decade of experience, Jay has mastered the art of combining long and short-term marketing approaches to drive accelerated new revenue growth for businesses. His unique Kyber Protocols framework, focusing on five growth pillars, has consistently doubled the gross annual revenue of clients enrolled in their 12-month programs. Here are a few of the topics we'll discuss on this episode of Hard to Market: Focus on community, growth, and providing tools to make employees' lives easier. Prove results and show prior success to build trust with prospects. Position yourself as a consultancy to expand your services beyond traditional marketing. Be confident and direct in your approach, offering your expertise and refusing to compromise on your strategies. Create a unique mechanism and sales process that sets you apart from competitors. The agency primarily works with tech companies, focusing on MarTech, software, SaaS, and FinTech. Jay's strategy involves creating a detailed assessment of a company's marketing and sales gaps before proposing full services. Resources: Kyber Digital Podcast Chef Connect with Jay Miller:LinkedInConnect with our host, Brian Mattocks: LinkedIn Email Quotables: 18:53 - “The easiest way is proving results and being able to show your prior results. That's just a given, you know? Right. Client reviews and testimonials can be faked, but if you can pull up data, it says like, here's something we did for this client, here's the results that they had. That's hard to argue, right? Yeah. Yeah. Especially if it's in a difficult market. So the first thing is results. The second thing we did was we actually on the sales end, stopped using trigger words for these people. So we stopped using the word ads. We stopped using the word ss e o, we stopped using the word agency. We stopped using the word marketing, right? And we've only focused on bottom line revenue growth and business development.” 21:19 - “So, so beyond just those couple things of, we, we positioned ourselves not as an agency, but as a consultancy, we're extremely confident and extremely direct on calls where I say, we're doing it our way or we're not doing it at all because I know it's gonna work. That level of confidence really portrays something that agencies don't, because agencies tend to like, oh, you need a proposal, here you go, here's our proposal with our stuff. They don't even ask questions, right? So it's like, that's, that's why you, you're a vendor because you didn't even ask why that budget? Why do you need this? Why? So they're not diving deep enough into discovery on sales.” 09:19 - “So I think for, for me, it's, it's always been let me focus on the prospect's problems and what they need and why they're even talking to me. 'cause at the end of the day, they don't care about me. They don't care about what we do, they don't care about my team. They don't give a shit. Like, the only thing they care about is, is making sure that we can solve their problems and getting them ahead. 'cause the reality is they only care about themselves. That's not to say that they're selfish, that's just the way people are programmed. So especially the business owners or the people who are responsible for revenue growth at a business.” 08:10 - “I mean, when you start talking about this stuff, it's obvious that the performance culture that you have also leads to particularly, you know, given that that that art side of that conversation, you have to be able to, you know, trust these folks in a performance setting. And the only way you're gonna get there is if you build that rapport, which I think is, it's a spot on approach to driving engagement and stuff like that.” 27:31 - Brian: “They don't have to be agile, that's the problem, right? Like when you have to sing for your supper every day, you eliminate all the BS. And when you're a large corporate, you just got so much momentum that, you know, like, like”Jay: “Literally it's like after 30 people in a company, it just starts to become like blow like a disaster on the back end. And they stop tracking things that like they're, you know, everything becomes a mess. And all the way through every department, everything, it's it all, and I'm not saying it's all bad, but it's like it all just ends up being, you know.”Brian M: “Absolutely.”

Hello everyone and welcome to another edition of Interviewing the Legends I'm your host Ray Shasho. Florida born Sean Chambers began his career in the Blues back in 1998 when he toured with the legendary Hubert Sumlin as his guitarist and band leader until 2003. During Sean's tenure with Mr. Sumlin, Britain's own Guitarist magazine named Chambers as “One of the top 50 blues guitarists of the last century.” In 2020, Chambers recorded "That's What I'm Talkin About" which is a tribute to his mentor, the late great Hubert Sumlin & was released on July 9th, 2021, on the Quarto Valley Record label. The album reached the Top 10 on the Billboard Blues Charts and received great accolades and rave reviews around the globe. Chambers became friends with the members of Savoy Brown after they played a festival together. When Savoy Brown's founder, Kim Simmonds, died in 2022, Chambers teamed up with bass player Pat De Salvo and drummer Garnet Grimm. Chambers and Savoy Brown recorded on the same label, they had the blessing of Kim Simmonds, and the move felt right. As a touring band, Sean Chambers takes guitar and vocals, Pat De Salvo takes bass and vocals, and Garnet Grimm takes drums and vocals. They continue to tour throughout the United States, Canada, and Europe, although Chambers always returns to his home base in Florida. Toga! Toga! We're heading to upstate New York to cover Pearl Jam's last show to date at the Saratoga Performing Arts Center, aka SPAC. It's a widely popular venue, one in which jam bands such as Phish and Dave Matthews Band have frequented, and as Ed would mention in this show, it was an early Lollapalooza tour venue back in 1992 when they played alongside Soundgarden. Glad he kept the shirt. This show comes right off the heels of a major turning point from the Binaural tour - The Jones Beach shows. The legendary Daughter performance with the It's OK tag, forever enshrined on the Touring Band 2000 DVD, marked as a healing moment for the band during the toughest period in their history. This show getting off to a hot start was a sign that the band was starting to loosen up and learn how to have a little fun on stage again. Breakerfall, Whipping, Spin The Black Circle, Hail, Hail, Corduroy and In My Tree are the first six songs of the night, and they absolutely do not disappoint. Add in an experimental Rearviewmirror to close the main set and a combination of Black/Yellow Ledbetter to this night, there are a lot of signature moments that make this show stand out. Oh yeah, and the nudist lava lamp inventor... him too. We'll hear stories from our Patron, Andrew Famulare, as well as Patrick and Brian from Hallucinogenic Recipe who were both at this show in the same section, but didn't know each other at the time. They'll share their hilarious memory from this show from both perspectives. And our Gear Guru segments this week look into Stone's Rickenbacker impact on Breakerfall, an interesting octave change in the Spin The Black Circle chorus, and why the combo of Black and Ledbetter worked so well, including love for the Nobody's Fault But Mine Led Zepplin tag. In this episode, we're going to do something a little different. Back in December of 2020, we put together a little crossover podcast with a show called Deprogrammed. Deprogrammed is a show where every episode they take a different band and attempt to put together a top 10 starter kit as an introduction to get people into the band. What we did was take that concept and inject it with steroids. We took six passionate and well studied fans of the band and had them delve into the entire band's discography in order to pick what they considered to be the 10 songs that define Pearl Jam fandom. The crew, dubbed the trashy six, is now back and ready to get you hyped for the live shows. In this episode, we take five live compilations: Live On 2 Legs, Live On 10 Legs, Let's Play Two, live renditions on the PJ20 Soundtrack and Touring Band 2000 and make an attempt to come up with 10 live tracks from these releases intended either to get people excited about the upcoming live shows, tell a story about their live history, or introduce first timers to what it's like to see the band. Once again, it's another struggle in order to come up with compromises, but isn't that where the entertainment lies?  Thanks to Deprogrammed Podcast host Justin Wilson for yet again dealing with us insane Pearl Jam people. The six names you'll get to hear in this episode are Live On 4 Legs hosts Randy Sobel and John Farrar, Curtis Hames, Patrick Boegel, Bradley Piasecki and Joey Goodsir. In October, I was able to sit down with one of my favorite bands ONA.  Ona is a 5 piece band from West Virginia who all grew up in the same hometown. They released their first album in 2016 and have since released their second album in 2019. They have toured with artists such as Tyler Childers, Caamp & Houndmouth. A few days before this recording they had played their first-ever Red Rocks show. We talked about what that experience was like and how they formed as a band. 2 of the band members, 'Jeeter' and Zach, are actually big fly fishermen and we got to hear all about the fly fishing in their hometown. They also talked about the realities of being on tour and how they have been able to find time to fly fish while on the road. It's an awesome conversation and was really fun to hear the parallels that fly fishing and music shared with one another. Your Band Sucks (At Business)
Should You Be A Solo Artist, Or Start A Band?

Your Band Sucks (At Business)

Play Episode Listen Later Jan 19, 2021 36:06

As a music producer, I've come across this situation more than a few times: an artist is solely handling all writing, booking, managing, and financing their 'band'. My immediate reaction is usually something like, 'Why are you giving away a majority stake in your business to people who do nothing more than play your songs?'. It's an obviously crazy decision when you think about it that way. Take the scenario described above and apply it to a 4 piece band (which is a real scenario I've seen), and the sole operator/songwriter has agreed to give the other musicians equal stakes in the business - meaning that every member in the band is getting 25% of the businesses revenue, even though they aren't doing anything other than performing your songs.Don't get me wrong - performers deserve to be compensated fairly - but are they really contributing to the growth and future of the business? Kayti Korte is my guest on the podcast this week. She's the singer and bass player for the duo Desperate Electric and we dive deep into how the band has transitioned from full time touring to isolating and performing from home, the stigmas of being a woman in music and how she overcomes it, and why it's important to think of your career and band like a business. Quotes that Stood Out:“If you want something to be your job, you have to make it your job.”“If you break it down, I think that we can see the value in spending an amount of money to have that time back.”Regarding the stigma of being a woman in a band: “It's not assumed that women could be in bands, and it's definitely assumed that they're not going to play an instrument.”“As a female singer you have to be amazing or people literally think you suck.”“We're all making art and everybody should feel like they can do that and they feel supported to do that in whatever capacity they want.”“Find your people, find your support system.”“Don't be afraid to reach out to people who are doing it.”“At the end of the day, people in the music industry are all pretty much going through the same thing, just on different scales.” Where to find Kayti and Desperate Electric:@desperateelectric@kaytikortewww.desperateelectric.com

Since I started this podcast in August of 2018, I've had an ongoing list of people I want to interview. Ryan Chrys was one of the first people I wrote on that list, and we finally made it happen! I have a lot of respect for Ryan as he's someone who after years of performing in different bands, is still pounding the pavement and touring heavily as if he is to be forever 22 years old. It's hard to be a DIY touring musician, but Ryan and his band (Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts) continue to play well over 100 dates a year and have coined the term, "modern outlaw country." I had a great time chatting with Ryan about his experiences, successes and failures in the music biz. I really believe in his band and their music, so please listen to the show then go CHECK OUT THEIR MUSIC! Links at the bottom of the page. If you enjoy the episode, please let others know, subscribe or write a review. 5 star ratings and reviews on Apple Music help us out a lot! SHOW CORRECTIONS: This episode was scheduled to air on Thursday, January 2, but because of the holiday we missed our deadline and had to release it the following Thursday (January 9). Because of this, the promotion of Ryan Chrys & The Rough Cuts show with Shane Smith & The Saints at the Gothic Theater on January 4 is out dated. My apologies! A week after the celebration of the St. Louis Blues first Stanley Cup victory (Brett Hull is still celebrating)we're having our own celebration by looking back on this notable show from the Binaural tour. It happened to be perfect timing because this show was the winner of our listener's choice contest, and Geoff Koller who made the submission got to join the show to talk about it. This show occurred during the time of filming for the Touring Band 2000 DVD and what most people remember from that compilation is a moment that came from this show. Eddie sees a woman named Kimberly Rae Schaefer interpreting sign language on the side of the stage and decides to invite her up to do a song so the entire crowd can see her sign during a performance of Given To Fly. It's one of the more heartwarming moments in the band's history that's remembered fondly to this day. We'll also tap into Matt Cameron channeling his inner Jack Irons as he was still transitioning a bit style-wise at the time. Versions of Hail, Hail and In My Tree sound as they were originally intended to, but his performance on Parting Ways ends up being what steals the show. If you'd like to subscribe to our Patreon account, head on over to patreon.com/liveon4legs for exclusive episodes. We thank all of our patrons for your donations and we insist that you stay tuned to that page this summer for loads more LO4L content!

During my conversation with James we talk about topics such as: Setting goals as a band and implementing them Navigating a music career And skills you can learn while touring This was a special interview for me since my introduction to live local music was a concert James was playing. Following his career from being a local musician to professional has given me a great perspective on what that career path can look like. I hope this conversation gives you that perceptive too. Let’s get into it. Challenge Something I hope that everyone can take away from this conversation is how having a goal and building yourself up can help fulfill that goal. I want to challenge you to come up with a business plan for your band and have members take ownership of one role to push the band forward. Junk food and cold medicine, the staples of tour life. Most bands think of touring as a time for drive-thru, energy drinks, and staying up all night. But is it possible for musicians to trade the status quo of unhealthy eating and bad habits for higher standards? I discuss with Anthony Ghazel, a pro drummer that gets hired to go on tour with Falling In Reverse and Ryan Caraveo, about how he stays healthy on the road. We talk about staying fit, eating right, and keeping good habits when tour turns normal life upside down.
