This week, we start a new series all about appreciating the shredded, gravelly, gritty, raspy pipes and throats of rock n' roll. We are focusing on lead singers who crafted truly special tones with their sandpapered delivery. Join us in celebrating these unique sets of pipes that set them apart from all the others. Anyone can scream, but only a few deliver gravel, grit & glory! What's this InObscuria thing? We're a podcast that exhumes obscure Rock n' Punk n' Metal and puts them in one of 3 categories: the Lost, the Forgotten, or the Should Have Beens. Our appreciation, this week, of rough and textured singing extends to all of the genres that we love. Kevin never realized how much this style of vocalizing had an impact on him until putting this whole thing together. As always, we hope we turn you onto something new!Songs this week include:Metal Church – “Ton Of Bricks” from The Dark (1986)Hot Water Music – “Trademark” from Fuel For The Hate Game (1997)Love/Hate – “Blackout In The Red Room” from Blackout In The Red Room (1990)The Baboon Show – “Gold” from God Bless You All (2022)Grave Digger – “Hymn Of The Damned” from The Living Dead (2018)The Distillers – “Die On A Rope” from Coral Fang (2003)Asomvel – “Born To Rock ‘n' Roll” from Born To Rock ‘n' Roll(2024)Please subscribe everywhere that you listen to podcasts!Visit us: https://inobscuria.com/https://www.facebook.com/InObscuriahttps://x.com/inobscuriahttps://www.instagram.com/inobscuria/Buy cool stuff with our logo on it!: https://www.redbubble.com/people/inobscuria/og-shopCheck out Robert's amazing fire sculptures and metal workings here: http://flamewerx.com/If you'd like to check out Kevin's band THE SWEAR, take a listen on all streaming services or pick up a digital copy of their latest release here: https://theswear.bandcamp.com/If you want to hear Robert and Kevin's band from the late 90s – early 00s BIG JACK PNEUMATIC, check it out here: https://bigjackpnuematic.bandcamp.com/

Big Fat Five: A Podcast Financially Supported by Big Fat Snare Drum
Today, we've got another segment of the podcast called Big Fat Five. This is where I invite my favorite drummers on the show to break down the five records that helped shape their approach to the instrument. This format also inspired my book, Drummers on Drumming, which is available now as a paperback or ebook on Amazon. Today's guest is Jared Shavelson. I met Jared through a mutual buddy and Big Fat Five alum, Mike Robinson. Jared is the real deal. He studied jazz in college but left early to kickstart his career—and it's safe to say that decision paid off. Over the years, he's played with Seal, The Bronx, Mariachi El Bronx, Joyce Manor, The Hope Conspiracy, Paint It Black, The Aquabats, and so many others. I just saw him perform with Mariachi El Bronx on New Year's Eve, opening for Morrissey at The Palladium. He was playing a cocktail kit, and the Afro-Cuban rhythms he was laying down were absolutely insane—I was completely blown away. Now, we were supposed to record this a few days ago, but life in LA had other plans. Between the fires and travel chaos, it was hard to pin down a time. Jared ended up flying out of Los Angeles Thursday night, only to get stuck in Atlanta during a snowstorm when his flight was canceled. After being stranded at the airport for 18 hours, he decided to help pass the time by hopping on the mic with me. That's why the audio in this episode might be a little rough—picture Jared huddled in the corner of a busy terminal while we recorded. --- Get Your Copy of the Drummers on Drumming Book Today!

In this special episode of Punks in Pubs, Liam revisits a project, his award-winning 2016 BBC Radio 4 documentary, 'In Search of Southern Hospitality'. Inspired by his recent conversation with Louisiana native Chuck Ragan, Liam shares this entertaining exploration of the famed “Southern Hospitality.” Presented by comedian Rich Hall, the documentary takes you on a journey through the deep South, from Louisiana to Alabama and Mississippi, to uncover whether the warmth and kindness the region is known for are still alive today—or if it's all just a clever marketing myth. So grab a sweet tea or something stronger, sit back, and enjoy this special episode of Punks in Pubs.

On episode 83 of the Miserable Failure Podcast, Chuck Ragan from Hot Water Music called me to chat about the 30th anniversary tour as well as the bands newest album VOWS. We delve into the highs and lows of their extensive touring experiences, Life outside the band, his family and of course fishing! We also go into detail about HMW's visit to the Dischord house and meeting Ian and Amanda MacKeye in DC. All that so much much more! Hosted by Michael Crusty
With the life of a fishing guide already being so chaotic, it's hard to imagine how a simultaneous career as a musician is even possible. Balancing both of these journeys along with family life has become the norm for Chuck Ragan, a fly-fishing guide and musician based out of California. While Chuck has experienced a professional life most could only dream of, his proudest memories are based around his son. In this episode, we highlight a game changer in the fullest sense: someone lives as a shining example of "doing it your own way".

This is Episode 143 and our guest is Jenny Owen Youngs. Jenny is a singer, songwriter, author, and podcaster originally from New Jersey who now makes her home in Maine. She has written mega hits for the likes of Pitbull and Panic! At the Disco, but my introduction to her music was at Jack Rabbits, a small rock club in Jacksonville, FL, ten years ago. Jenny stood out on a stage that included heavyweight songwriters Chuck Ragan and Rocky Votolato. Her songs have been featured in the likes of Bojack Horseman, Grey's Anatomy, and Weeds. Her Buffy the Vampire Slayer podcast Buffering has spawned its own subculture. It has been over a decade since Jenny's last full length solo record but the wait is over this September. Her gorgeous collection of songs “Avalanche” is out on September 22, 2023. It is a stunning album that showcases all of what makes Jenny Owen Youngs a special creative human. Hello People! Welcome to the When In Yorkshire Podcast, I hope you're all well, we're back with another episode recorded at Slam Dunk 2022. The 2023 festival is just under 3 weeks away and looks to be another awesome day with a line up mixing up some of the best Punk / Rock and bands around with a good blend of legends and new faces. Here I speak to Canadian rocker and host of the great podcast Lead Singer Syndrome: Silverstein vocalist Shane Told who highlights my love of tapping - Brendan and Tyler from Canadian hardcore band COUNTERPARTS and wrapping up this episode is Chuck Ragan and yet another Canadian, Mr Chris Crestwell of Hot Water Music. As I've said before, this was a busy day but filled with conversations featuring absolute heroes and I genuinely enjoyed speaking to and meeting each of these guests. Festival slots can be tricky as these conversations are often very restricted by time and guests are being ushered around a heaving press tent with music from at least 2 stages competing against each other as well as our voices however everyone of the guests from Slam Dunk, not just this episode, were incredibly giving with their responses and hopefully these are as much fun to listen to as they were to record. Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Captain Chuck Ragan From lakes and rivers of Texas, E. Tennessee & N. Georgia., bayous of SW Louisiana or the inshore/offshore salt and freshwater of Florida, Ragan grew up chasing fish. With a Cajun mother and Florida boy father, both avid anglers, he held a rod early on and though the Ragans moved often due to his father's profession as a Veteran PGA pro, teacher and coach, the road always ended in water. Aside from their parents, Chuck and brother Paul fished aside paternal grandparents on the intercoastal of Daytona Bch. and maternal grandparents around Holly Bch. In Louisiana and along the Blanco River outside of Kyle, Tx. Fishing became a way of life in the family. Father Dave Ragan always seemed to relocate the family around prime fisheries whether he meant to or not and having a mama born and bred into it didn't smother the flame one bit. As a teen, he fished bass lakes, beaches, inlets and canals in Sarasota on the Gulf of Florida. With itchy feet in 94, he left for Gainesville, FL. unknowingly continuing what would end up being his music career. As his band Hot Water Music became an international touring machine, Ragan saw the world. Moving to Gainesville followed by Micanopy in early 2000, he learned from Kip Street & Bill “The Gill” Sorton, new methods of angling and woodwork. When not working, you'd find him off the coast of Saint Augustine, Cedar Key or Shellmound chasing Redfish, offshore winching grouper or poling lilies after heavy bass and striper on Rodmans, St. Johns or the Suwannee River. In early 2000, Ragan left the South for California to marry Jill and continued a trade in carpentry, songwriting and fishing Pacific waters. He kept touring, this time with fishing rods in tow. As an angler and traveling musician, Ragan takes advantage of being in prime zones to fish and share music across the globe. Relocating to Grass Valley, CA. in 07, he continued his career in music and began exploring the waters of Northern California through the end of a fly line. Encouraged by peers Matt “Gilligan” Koles, Hogan Brown, Clay Hash and Tom Page, Ragan became a licensed guide and vowes that it was the organization called Cast Hope that was the driving force behind finally taking that step along with having kids in the scope for the future. Ragan began slowing down on touring with his music and began guiding for the non profit organization Cast Hope www.casthope.org to help give a new perspective to kids who've yet to find the passion and reason to protect our naturalresources. Always positive and fired up, he lives to see people light up when their rod bends and believes in giving others the knowledge of the outdoors, fly fishing, teamwork, independent confidence and the importance of respect and conservation for all to carry and pass on themselves. Jill and Chuck had their first child and future deck hand, Grady Joseph in May of 2015 and began slowing down even more in the touring world and focusing mainly on guiding. Now as a USCG licensed Inland OUPV Captain and California fly fishing guide that focuses on Sacramento Valley Rivers, lakes and reservoirs in the foothills of the Sierra Nevada Range and The California Delta, Ragan loves sharing fun and joy on the water. Always in pursuit of largemouth, smallmouth, striper, spotted bass and shad on the fly as well as the wild trout and steelhead of the Yuba and Feather Rivers, Ragan is just as eager to put people on a fish as he is to catch them himself. In his younger days, Chuck Ragan was a hard-charging musician on the punk scene, singing his lungs out with the boys in Hot Water Music. But when he wasn't stoking his crowds up from the stage with his powerful voice and loud guitar, he was somewhere outside, usually fishing. Ragan's family moved around quite a bit when he was growing up. His father was a golf pro and his mother a ventriloquist. And wherever they went, Chuck fished. He found solace in the quiet. His fishing life led him down many roads, and now he mixes his music career with a burgeoning guiding business, fishing the rivers and lakes near his home in Grass Valley, California. Ragan was profiled in the Summer 2022 issue of Anglers Journal magazine.

Hot Water Music bassist, Jason Black joins us to discuss how many times he's knocked out Chuck Ragan with his guitar's headstock. He can't help Benny with his goose-problem, but has a lot of nice things to say about Mike Watt, Fishbone and Metallica.
Boston-area Americana-punk troubadour Jesse Ahern has shared stages with everyone from Dropkick Murphys to Rancid to Frank Turner to Lenny Lashley and countless others both across the US and across Europe. At long last, he finally sits down with us for a chat about his new album, "Heartache and Love." The album grew out of sessions that popped up during the pandemic when what had been some pretty expansive 2020 tour plans ground to a halt. The album both refines and expands upon the sort of roots-rock-meets-folk-punk thing that Ahern has been doing so well for years now. It helped earn Ahern a Boston Music Award nomination for Americana Artist Of The Year, where he's up against some local heavy hitters like Mark Erelli and Lila Wiles and Lashley himself. At first glance, it might seem that Ahern would fit into a handful of other categories, from Singer-Songwriter of the Year to Punk/Hardcore or Rock or Folk or even Blues Artist of the Year...but maybe that's what makes Ahern so perfect for the Americana label, because his sound is an amalgam of all of the above, all of which make him an artist rooted in classic American working-class music. As you might imagine based on the almost 90-minute length of our chat, we cover a lot of ground, from parenting three children during a pandemic, to touring Europe with Dropkick Murphys and Frank Turner, to his upcoming overseas run with Chuck Ragan and Chris Cresswell, to growing up in the Boston area music scene, to the struggles with addiction and the depths of the recovery community in the punk scene. We also talk quite a bit about Lenny Lashley, because he's a one-of-a-kind.
