Graham Bartlett is a former police officer, having risen to Chief Superintendent of Brighton and Hove before turning to writing when he left after 30 years in the police force. Working first with renowned crime author (and former Page One guest!) Peter James on two non-fiction books gave Graham the writing bug and he has now written three crime novels, with his latest, City on Fire, just out. In addition, he has set up a consultancy for all budding and established crime writers where Graham and his team of experts offer accurate, expert advice to writers such as Peter James, Mark Billingham, Elly Griffiths, Antony Horowitz and many more.We had great fun chatting with Graham and hearing about how he set up his consultancy business and why he was tempted to try his hand at fiction writing. We also talk about him choosing to "write what you know" with his books, and ask about the police stories he couldn't include in his books.Links:Buy Graham's books nowVisit Graham's consultancy websiteFollow Graham on InstagramSupport us on Patreon and get great benefits!: https://www.patreon.com/ukpageonePage One - The Writer's Podcast is brought to you by Write Gear, creators of Page One - the Writer's Notebook. From the relentless pulse of a detective's career to the imaginative realms of crime fiction, my first returning guest, Graham Bartlett invites us into the shadows where his experiences as a former detective fuse with his storytelling prowess. Our conversation unfurls the complexities of his latest novel, "City on Fire," with a focus on the emotional labor of writing from a place of authenticity. We tackle the obstacle course of accurately portraying intense scenes, steering clear of unnecessary details, and the propulsion that inciting incidents lend to a narrative's momentum. We venture behind the curtain to see how detectives navigate their multifaceted lives, juggling the normalcy of everyday tasks with the extraordinary pressures of solving crimes. This episode is a must-listen for anyone enamored with the gritty reality of crime fiction and the artistry involved in bringing such stories to life from the perspective of an insider like Graham Bartlett.City on FireAfter losing her sister to an overdose, Chief Superintendent Jo Howe is desperate to tackle the world of drugs that consumes the shadowy backstreets of Brighton. JOHN LINCOLN (WILLIAMS) chats to Paul Burke about his new novel GREY IN THE DARK, a journey in American crime fiction, CLR James and South Wales. GREY IN THE DARK: Too many people loved Kelly Rowland. One of them killed her, but was it the man in prison for her murder? Gethin Grey and the Last Resort Legals team investigate another miscarriage of justice, taking them from post-industrial dereliction of the South Wales Valleys to the gated communities of the Cardiff docklands.Gethin Grey is back in the game. His wife may have left him and he's struggling with life as a single father, but now he's got his biggest case in years. The brutal murder of a young woman called Kelly Rowland has been the talk of the South Wales valleys. Even the conviction of a neighbour, a builder called Morgan Hopkins, failed to stop the gossip. There were too many other suspects still around, among them a pair of coppers: brother and sister. So Gethin was delighted when Morgan's family stumped up the money to pay him and his Last Resort Legals team to reinvestigate the case. But when a new lead takes him undercover into a support group for recovering addicts, Gethin has to confront his own demons.Moving from the former mining towns of the valleys to the shiny new waterfront developments of Cardiff, taking in adult puppet shows and piercing parlors, derelict mines and country clubs, Grey In The Dark lays bare a world in which sex and money collide and everyone has their secrets.John Lincoln is the transparent pseudonym of John Williams, the novelist, biographer and crime fiction reviewer for the Mail on Sunday. His first book Into The Badlands explores 'a vital mix of literary criticism, personality profile, and imaginary geography' (New Statesman and Society) and has become a crime fiction classic. His true crime account of a notorious miscarriage of justice, Bloody Valentine, is a cult classic, described by Benjamin Zephaniah as his favourite book. Since then he's written eight more books including the Cardiff Trilogy of novels and biographies of Michael X, Shirley Bassey, Eartha Kitt & CLR James. His latest novel Grey in the Dark is the second Gethin Grey mystery.Laugharne Weekend 24-26th March.
