AN EYE FOR AN EYE (HarperCollins) is the penultimate in the William Warwick series, a remarkable character study of two men—William Warwick and Miles Faulkner—and a modern take on the Holmes/Moriarity dynamic. Warwick is now a Chief Superintendent at Scotland Yard, now head of the Royalty and Diplomatic Protection Unit, and Miles Faulkner is behind bars. In this dance of morality between these two men, Archer has opened rich narrative possibilities in the dark interlocking network of power and money around the world, from arms deals to the art market. ABOUT THE AUTHOR: Jeffrey Archer, whose novels include the Clifton Chronicles, the William Warwick novels and Kane and Abel, is one of the world's bestselling authors, with sales of over 275 million copies around the world. Famous for his discipline as a writer who works on up to fourteen drafts of each book, Jeffrey also brings a vast amount of insider knowledge to his books. Whether it's his own career in politics, his passionate interest in art, or the wealth of fascinating background detail – inspired by the extraordinary network of friends he has built over a lifetime at the heart of Britain's establishment – his novels provide a fascinating glimpse into a range of closed worlds. A member of the House of Lords, the author is married to Dame Mary Archer, and they have two sons, two granddaughters and three grandsons. He splits his time between London, Grantchester in Cambridge, and Mallorca where he writes the first draft of each new novel.

This episode was filmed in front of a live studio audience at Vorboss in central London. Kevin O'Leary spent 30 years as a police officer with the Metropolitan Police retiring as a Chief Superintendent. Kevin was also, now famously, episode No.1 of The Leadership Enigma which started during the pandemic. This episode is a fascinating insight into the world of crime and punishment including undercover policing, hostage negotiation, stolen vehicles, riots, serial killers and more. Kevin decided to become a police officer after he was robbed at knife point at 14 years old and the police solved the crime and actually recovered his bicycle. As a very young probationary police officer Kevin found himself policing the miner's strike in the 1980's during the time Margaret Thatcher was Prime Minister and also the Broadwater Farm riots which involved the murder of PC Keith Blakelock, all providing Kevin with a baptism of fire into the world of policing. Kevin's time with the Stolen Vehicle Squad was his initiation in the Criminal Investigations Department (CID) and learning how to carry a case load of allocated reactive investigations. In 1999 Kevin became involved in the Admiral Duncan Pub bombing. He was around the corner on an unrelated surveillance operation when the bomb was detonated. At the scene, Kevin was faced with chaos and destruction. As one of the first on scene his ability to make quick decisions and prioritise were tested to the max. As a police officer and leader, picking up on 'weak signals' is a must in a world of constant change. Kevin tells the story of dealing with a High Risk missing person which turned into uncovering the actions of an international serial killer, John Sweeney, who is currently serving life in prison and will be the focus of a recent television documentary. Kevin as a senior officer held the role of Head of Undercover Policing for the Metropolitan Police and explains the iconic investigation he was involved in that was headlined in the newspapers as 'The Hip Hop Cop Shop.' Kevin had to make a series of difficult and at times unpopular decisions for the ranks and file officers in order to help protect them from the rigours and stresses of undercover operations. One of Kevin's final roles in his career was as Bronze Commander during the London 2012 Olympics with a funny story of the cycle protest group 'Critical Mass' that had been infiltrated and decided to see if they could intercept the Queen! Kevin is also the 'referee' for the award winning TV show 'Hunted' which is on our screens each year. www.kevinoleary123.com Hosted on Acast. See acast.com/privacy for more information.

Calls For More Resources To Tackle Drugs Problem "Destroying" Clare Communities

A call has been made for more resources to tackle drugs-related crime which is said to be "destroying" communities in Clare. The first Clare Joint Policing Committee meeting of the year has heard that offences related to the sale or supply of drugs are continuing to rise. With recent Department of Justice figures revealing Clare's Divisional Drugs Unit is the second-smallest in the country with just three Gardaí serving in it, questions have been raised as to the effectiveness of drugs policing in this county. Data from the latest quarterly meeting of this county's Joint Policing Committee shows 14 offences related to the sale or supply of drugs have been recorded in Clare so far this year. This is up from 10 in the same period in 2023 which indicates a rise of 40%. In addition, 27 possession-related offences were recorded in Clare between January and March. The meeting has heard there are plans afoot to bolster the strength of this county's Drugs Unit which was welcome news to many in attendance. Clare Joint Policing Committee Chair and Sixmilebridge Fine Gael Councillor John Crowe is adamant more resources are needed to combat the issue, which he believes is prevalent in "every corner of Clare at the moment". As of last October, there are 293 Gardaí serving at stations across Clare; 13 fewer than the 306 in place here at the end of 2022, and 24 members below the national average. Shannon, Ennis, Ennistymon and Kilrush are the only 24/7 Garda stations in the county. The stations at Ballyvaughan, Kildysart, Kilkee and Miltown Malbay meanwhile are all served by a single Garda. Chief Superintendent of the Clare/Tipperary Garda Division Aileen Magner says Gardaí are forced to "think outside the box" amid serious recruitment and retention difficulties.

On Tuesday's Morning Focus, Clare FM's Seán Lyons caught up with Chief Superintendent of the Clare-Tipperary Garda Division, Colm O'Sullivan, to discuss Clare County Council's decision to keep the Ennis Market Building closed until further notice due to "workplace safety, health, and public welfare concerns." The move comes amid complaints of ongoing anti-social behavior in the covered public car park, which has been an object of criticism since it was opened in 2016 as a result of a €1.75 million redevelopment. Meanwhile, the Clare Joint Policing Committee, which consists of local councillors, Oireachtas members, Gardaí, and community and voluntary sector representatives, has met earlier this week to discuss issues relating to law and order in this county. To get clarity on this and other matters relating to crime in the county, Alan spoke with Pat Daly, Fianna Fáil Cllr and Mayor of Ennis.

Culture in the police force, from top to bottom, is back in the headlines. In the past week, police officers have been accused of mishandling body-worn video in more than 150 incidents, including switching off cameras and sharing footage on WhatsApp. We've also seen more than 100 officers hand in permits allowing them to carry guns on duty after a colleague was charged with the murder of Chris Kaba. Talk even turned to putting the UK army on standby. "Faitíos ar dhaoine" - Comhairleoir i nGaillimh. Frank Fahy, City Councilor in Galway, has said that people are afraid to come into the city because of the violence that has been going on in the place for several weeks. Tá sé ráite ag Frank Fahy, Comhairleoir Cathrach i nGaillimh, go bhfuil faitíos ar dhaoine a theacht isteach sa gcathair mar gheall ar an bhforéigean atá ar bun san áit le roinnt seachtainí. He says there is an urgent need for more Gardai on the city's streets "before people get killed". Tá géarghá a deir sé le tuilleadh Gardaí ar shráideanna na cathrach "sula marófar daoine". Council members are due to have a meeting with the Minister of Law and Justice before the end of the week. Tá cruinniú le bheith ag baill na Comhairle leis an Aire Dlí agus Círt roimh dheireadh na seachtaine. The Chief Superintendent of Gardaí in Galmagh, Gerard Roche, has said that it is necessary to ensure that the city is safe for people and he says that the Garda Síochána is going to ensure that those involved in the scandal are brought to court and jailed. last few days. Many people also say that it is not the good reputation that is attracting the city. Deir daoine go leor freisin nach é an dea-cháil atá á tharraingt ar an gcathair. In last year's Budget funding was provided to recruit 1,000 new Garda nationally before the end of this year. Sa mBuiséad anuraidh cuireadh maoiniú ar fáil le 1,000 Garda nua a earcú go náisiúnta roimh dheireadh na bliana seo.
