Hello and thank you for downloading another episode of The Flixters Podcast!  The Ryan Coogler and Michael B Jordan teamup continues into 2025 with the release of Sinners, a gloriously vibrant, vampiric tale of twin brothers in 1930s Jim Crow era America. With thumping music, an unmissable performance from Jordan and Coogler's eye, Sinners sets itself apart from typical vampire fare. We also discuss Warfare. A blistering look at the frailties of war seen through the memories of a Navy Seal platoon caught up in a gunfight in Iraq, in 2006. Unflinching in its take and full of powerful performances, Warfare will be spoken about for years to come. Check out the show for what we thought, and if you've seen these films hit us up on our YouTube channel and let us know your thoughts. On Anniversary Corner we look back at 30 Days of Night And if that's not enough entertainment for you, we've even thrown in new trailers to watch and what you can catch on streaming. Thank you for supporting us and we hope you enjoy the show! 00:00 Intro 01:40 Shoutouts02:31 Movie News10:13 New on Streaming15:23 New Trailers21:53 Anniversary Corner25:10 Sinners Review41:46 Warfare Review55:40 OutroThis episode is proudly sponsored by Zencastr. Create your podcast today! #madeonzencastr

TALK TO ME, TEXT ITHave you ever wondered what happens when online critics attack your creative work? Today's candid morning musings explore my decision to disconnect from YouTube after facing harsh criticism from a commenter who called my podcast "garbage" with "lazy and ineffectual" ideas. This revealing look at handling online negativity sets the stage for a wide-ranging commentary covering memorable stories that deserve attention. The conversation shifts to celebrity culture's disturbing fascination with convicted killers, specifically examining Rosie O'Donnell's shocking statement about Lyle Menendez being "the only white guy she can love and trust." I dive into why this romanticization of the Menendez brothers' crimes is deeply troubling, especially when their claims of self-defense fall apart under scrutiny. Their cold-blooded murder of parents watching television deserves no sympathy, regardless of celebrity endorsement. Most concerning is the underreported story of a 17-year-old Wisconsin teenager who murdered his parents, lived with their bodies for 12 days, then fled with the intention of assassinating former President Trump. Why isn't this frightening case receiving mainstream television coverage? The teen's connections to extremist ideologies raise urgent questions about youth radicalization and selective media attention. I close with reflections on childhood memories of spring cleaning and an invitation for listeners to share their own experiences with this seasonal ritual. Sarah Hoover knows her new memoir, “The Motherload,” isn't flattering. She's made peace with the fact that “people will judge me on the internet,” as she says on this week's Big Books and Bold Ideas. She's telling her story anyway because she believes an honest rendering of modern motherhood is necessary. “In my defense, birth and motherhood did not match up to the narrative I'd been fed, and it felt like a nasty trick,” she writes. “And while my mental breakdown was embarrassing at times, especially considering how it exposed me as a puerile and spoiled little fool, it also showed how pernicious it is to sell tales of motherhood as being so wonderful and feminine, the very essence of womanhood.” Hoover's memoir is brutally honest about the disassociation and rage she felt the year after her son was born, and how her eventual diagnosis of postpartum depression felt like like both a relief and a betrayal. She joined host Kerri Miller on this week's show to talk about the taboos of motherhood, the trad wife trend and why she was compelled to go public with her story. Guest: Sarah Hoover's new memoir is “The Motherload: Episodes from the Brink of Motherhood.” She lives in New York with her husband and two children. SEND ME A TEXT MESSAGE NOWWhen democracy teeters on the brink, where do we stand? Unflinching, I, Jeff Alan Wolf, bring to the forefront a cacophony of events that send fractures across the pillars of our society. I open with a stark look at the repercussions for violence against public officials through the sentencing of David DePappe, whose actions against Speaker Nancy Pelosi's husband have drawn a line in the sand—30 years behind bars. The charades of Rudy Giuliani reach a climax with an indictment served amidst his octogenarian celebrations, while Justice Samuel Alito's inverted flag fiasco and a verbal clash between Marjorie Taylor Greene and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez underscore the fractures within our governing body. This episode also wades into the deepening waters of the hush money trial, where the spectacle of Republican figureheads falling in lockstep behind Donald Trump stirs a sense of foreboding for our judiciary's impartiality. With Mike Johnson, Eric and Lara Trump, and Senators Rick Scott, Tommy Tuberville, and JD Vance stepping into the limelight as Trump's media mouthpieces, we must ask ourselves—what precedent does this set for the future of justice? It's a moment to reflect on the very bedrock of our rule of law and what may come should the former President reclaim his seat in the Oval Office. Join me as we dissect these developments and dare to confront the shifting landscape of our democratic ideals.AWorldGoneMadPodcast@gmail.com

May 1 was the first day of National Foster Care Awareness Month. The team at Comfort Cases wants to take a moment to thank and recognize all of the foster parents, foster families, youth who are currently in foster care and those who have “aged out”. Thank you to the CASAs and the social service agencies and workers who are doing their best. And thank you to YOU, our faithful (and new) listeners of Fostering Change. We produce this podcast for you and in support of all you are doing. Thank you for your comments and sharing episodes with friends, family and colleagues. We couldn't have asked for a better guest for this first episode airing during National Foster Care Awareness Month. Award-winning journalist Rob Henderson vividly recounts growing up in foster care, enlisting in the Air Force, and surprisingly attending elite universities in his raw coming-of-age memoir, Troubled: A Memoir of Foster Care, Family and Social Class.Rob's book was an instant USA TODAY Best Seller. In the book and in his interview with Rob Scheer (who is a Navy veteran), he discusses his pioneering concept of “luxury beliefs”: ideas and opinions that confer status on the Upper Class while inflicting costs on the less fortunate.Rob Henderson was born to a drug-addicted mother and a father he never met, ultimately shuttling between ten different foster homes in California. When he was adopted into a loving family, he hoped that life would finally be stable and safe. Divorce, tragedy, poverty, and violence marked his adolescent and teen years, propelling Henderson to join the military upon completing high school. An unflinching portrait of shattered families, desperation, and determination, Troubled recounts Henderson's expectation-defying young life and juxtaposes his story with those of his friends who wound up incarcerated or killed. He retreads the steps and missteps he took to escape the drama and disorder of his youth. As he navigates the peaks and valleys of social class, Henderson finds that he remains on the outside looking in. these charges revolve around the manipulation of business documents designed to obscure payments, purportedly aimed at hiding past indiscretions prior to the 2016 election. Presiding Judge Juan Merchan deemed it necessary to impose a gag order for the continuing trial, prohibiting Trump from making derogatory remarks about any of the witnesses, courthouse personnel, or their families. Some so-called 'legal experts' are claiming that Trump has violated this order more than once, leading to the prosecution's call for a contempt of court charge. In the midst of these proceedings, the Trump campaign took the matter directly to the people. Through an email communication circulated on Tuesday, the team highlighted the gravity of the situation. However, rather than spreading despair, the email implored for a show of support against this perceived onslaught on the former President. In true Trump fashion, the email minces no words. Trump unequivocally criticizes this as the realization of the 'Hate-America Deep State's' long-held desire. He warns his followers that unchecked, Democrats could wield undisputed authority and bring ruin upon our great nation. He calls for an outpouring of support before the situation spirals out of control. It's clear the former president believes these judicial procedures to be a political maneuver, attempting to undermine the MAGA movement. Pointed toward 'Crooked Joe Biden', the email alleges that the current establishment assumes jailing him would dishearten and scatter his loyal followers. However, Trump's faith in his supporters comes across unwavering, steadfastly proclaiming that his base will never abandon him, even under such calculated onslaught.  See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

"Our writers have never divorced themselves from social reality. They have not really gone as much into individual lives without taking into account the social space in which those lives are lived. Almost all these stories are written in a down-to-earth mode. The attempt is largely to depict the real world and not the world of the intellectual imagination or fantasy. There's too much reality to get away from. Writers in our country have taken that reality head on and grappled with it, and have never flinched or looked away. These are the stories that continue to tell you the things that matter" - Arunava Sinha, editor, The Greatest Indian Stories Ever Told, talks to Manjula Narayan about translation, pan Indianism, literature from different parts of the country, and how editing a volume of short fiction like this one is an intense experience.

This is Dr. MaryAnn Diorio, novelist and life coach, welcoming you to another episode of Winning with the Word. Today is Monday, July 3, 2023, and this is Episode #26 of Series 2023. This episode is titled "The Lunatic Age". Those who are honest among us–and who still can think straight—will not be afraid to acknowledge that we are living in an age of utter lunacy, an age when logical thinking has gone out the window and has been replaced by insanity, idiocy, and every form of stupidity possible to human beings. If my parents were alive today, they would not recognize the world in which we live. So, you may be wondering, like a lot of people, how did we get here? The answer is very simple. We got here by turning away from God and, thereby, turning away from Truth, because God is Truth. The Bible is very clear that if we turn away from God, He will turn away from us. And when God, Who is Truth, turns away, we have no Truth left on which to base our thinking. Romans 1: 28 says this: "And since they did not see fit to acknowledge God, God gave them up to a debased mind to do what ought not to be done."  In other words, when we choose not to honor and reverence God and to obey His commands, then He will leave us to our own devices. He will turn away from us and leave us to fend for ourselves without the benefit of Truth. All we have to do is to look around us to see what happens to people who lead lives without truth. They become lunatics. A life without truth is a life of deception. A life of lies. Our culture has abandoned God. He has said, "Enough! Do what you want, and see what happens." Well, we are seeing what happens. Some men think they are women. Some women think they are men. Some people think they are cats. Drag queens lead story hour at our public libraries. So-called churches have transgenders as pastors. If this is not lunacy, I do not know what is.  Lunacy is what happens when people turn away from God. They become their own god, and they surely make a mess of their lives as a result.  God will not strive with man forever. In other words, God will not go chasing man down forever. God gives us many chances, but at some point, we run out of chances. That is what has happened to our world today. It has run out of chances because it has scorned God's continual calls to repentance. If God has turned you over to a reprobate mind, then you can no longer think logically. Why? Because logical thinking is founded on Truth. When one strays from Truth, one automatically strays from logical thinking.  We have no excuses. We are getting what we deserve. And things will only get worse for those who persist in their rebellion. While they may think they are living the good life, they will soon find out that it leads to Hell. So, is there any hope for a reprobate mind to be restored to sanity? Yes. But it will require a fierce commitment to the following: 1. Sincere repentance. This means a sincere turning away from sin and an acceptance of Jesus Christ Who alone is Truth. 2. Unflinching obedience to the Word of God at all costs, even in the face of the worst temptation.

On In The Market with Janet Parshall we took you behind the walls of the U.S. Supreme Court as we spotlighted the character and decisions of Justice Clarence Thomas. Our guest shed light on how the foundations of his early life impacted some of his biggest and most important decisions at the highest court in the land. The feminism of the 60’s has been transformed to a more damaging form that is impacting families, especially children, across the country. We heard from a former feminist who opened our eyes to why this radical belief is still drawing converts and how and why its ideology must be fought. Once more we answered your questions on how to lovingly deal with prodigal children who turn away from their faith. Our guest, a respected psychologist who is firmly grounded in the Word, combined God’s truth with qualified counsel to help parents navigate this nuanced and tricky terrain. We turned the spotlight on Iran as we dug deeper into why so many people in that nation are turning to Christ. And we heard about the eternal impact of a very special ministry which is drawing more and more Iranians to the foot of the cross. Traditional masculinity is under attack like never before. Our guest helped us clear away the popular rhetoric and drew us back to God’s definition of masculinity while reminding us of the importance of standing firm against the efforts to redefine it for modern sensibilities. As another news week comes to a close, we once again invite you to share your thoughts of some of the impactful headlines of the week.

Paper Cuts LIVE! Episode 54 HERE IN THE DARK from Shotgun Honey Books is the debut short story collection from award winning author Meagan Lucas! Join us for the exclusive cover reveal and author chat. We will also be joined by special guest, author Laurel Hightower. "HERE IN THE DARK, the first collection from award-winning author Meagan Lucas, is a gritty genre blending wallop of short stories, set mostly in Southern Appalachia, that explore the female experience of lawlessness. In the tradition of Dorothy Allison and Bonnie Jo Campbell, Lucas tackles, with unsettling honesty: poverty, addiction, motherhood, and social justice in an increasingly troubled cultural climate. These are character-driven stories about crime, but less a who-done-it mystery and more a meditation on how the vulnerable navigate a world devoid of true justice. Unflinching in its gaze, HERE IN THE DARK is an ambitious collection from a bold and empathetic storyteller. Perceptive, intimate, and brave, these sixteen stories encompass shame and forgiveness, loss and redemption, oppression and revolution, and signal a new way of thinking about power and trauma. In "Voluntary Action," a sheriff's deputy witnesses the overdose of a high school friend in her custody. In "Buttons," a little girl, bullied by the neighbor boy, gets her revenge with a needle and thread. In "Sitting Ducks," a hurricane bears down on mothers, daughters, and sisters in an un-evacuated women's prison. In "Asylum" an immigrant woman, suffering a terrible loss, sees ghosts in the hotel and houses that she cleans. In "Hell, or High Water" a young woman with Stockholm syndrome is abandoned by her kidnapper deep in the woods of Western North Carolina. And in "Here in the Dark," a newly clean addict is given the opportunity to start over with her son if only she'll snitch on her former lover and pimp, but discovers, of course, it's not that simple. Blending Lucas' musical prose with high-tension stakes, and resonant characters, HERE IN THE DARK is a collection not to be missed." Visit us at: https://www.papercutslive.com

She was the co founder and executive director of TaxMarch.org  Baynard Woods thought he had escaped the backwards ways of the South Carolina he grew up in, a world defined by country music, NASCAR, and the confederacy. He'd fled the South long ago, transforming himself into a politically left-leaning writer and educator. Then he was accused of discriminating against a Black student at a local university. How could I be racist? he wondered. Whiteness was a problem, but it wasn't really his problem. He taught at a majority Black school and wrote essays about education and Civil Rights. But it was his problem. Working as a reporter, it became clear that white supremacy was tearing the country apart. When a white kid from his hometown massacred nine Black people in Charleston, Woods began to delve into his family's history—and the ways that history has affected his own life. When he discovered that his family—both the Baynards and the Woodses—collectively claimed ownership of more than 700 people in 1860, Woods realized his own name was a confederate monument. Along with his name, he had inherited privilege, wealth, and all the lies that his ancestors passed down through the generations.  In this gripping and perceptive memoir, Woods takes us along on his journey to understand how race has impacted his life. Special Guest: Stephen Mills, author of CHOSEN: a memoir of stolen boyhood.   "I was sexually assaulted by a highly respected member of the community. My boyhood experience is all too common. The only unusual part is that I decided to write a book about it." —Stephen Mills   At thirteen years old, Stephen Mills is chosen for special attention by the director of his Jewish summer camp, a charismatic social worker intent on becoming his friend. Stephen, whose father died when he was four, places his trust in this authority figure, who first grooms and then molests him for two years. Stephen tells no one, but the aftershocks rip through his adult life, as intense as his denial: self-loathing, drug abuse, petty crime, and horrific nightmares, all made worse by the discovery that his abuser is moving from camp to camp, state to state, molesting other boys. Only physical and mental collapse bring Stephen to confront the truth of his boyhood and begin the painful process of recovery—as well as a decades-long crusade to stop a serial predator, find justice, and hold to account those who failed the children in their care. The trauma of sexual abuse is shared by one out of every six men, yet very few have broken their silence. Unflinching and compulsively readable, CHOSEN eloquently speaks for those countless others and their families. It is a rare act of consummate courage and generosity—the indelible story of a man who faces his torment and his tormentor and, in the process, is made whole.   More info and resources at stephenmillsauthor.com
