Paul Butski Reveals Elite Turkey Hunting Tactics | 100% Wild Podcast Ep. 470 In this episode of the 100% WILD Podcast, Matt Drury and Tim Kjellesvik are joined by Paul Butski, a 3-time Grand National Champion and Turkey Hunting Hall of Famer. Paul, who is the mastermind behind many HS Strut products, dives into the development of the Elite Six series, which is a collaborative effort with Mark Drury, Fred Zinke, and Tad Brown designed to bring professional-grade realism to every hunter's vest. We discuss the technical nuances of diaphragm calls, from mastering air pressure to selecting the right cuts, like the DOD Ghost Tongue, to ensure you own the "moment of truth" in the timber.   The conversation moves beyond calling into the "lost art" of woodsmanship, exploring how to use extra-dimensional sounds like wing beats and leaf scratching to paint a realistic picture for wary gobblers. Paul shares high-stakes tactics for midday birds, the proper orientation of Jake and Hen decoys, and the critical transition of teaching the next generation to hunt outside of a blind. Whether you are looking for tips to reset on a silent bird or want to hear legendary stories from the "Rat Pack" at Turkey Camp, this episode is a definitive guide to field success.    00:00:00 – Introduction to Ep 470 with Hall of Famer Paul Butski  00:02:46 – The evolution of competition calling from then to now  00:04:00 – Inside the HS Strut Elite Six series development  00:05:48 – Mastering air pressure and diaphragm call basics  00:10:56 – Moving beyond basic yelping to advanced turkey sounds  00:13:30 – Woodsmanship: Using scratching and wing beats in the timber  00:15:27 – Tactics for hunting farms without roosting birds  00:23:33 – Decoy Strategy: When to use a Jake vs. Hen setup  00:34:41 – The "Lost Art" of hunting outside of a ground blind  00:43:52 – Midday Play: How to approach silent afternoon gobblers  00:48:14 – Turkey Camp Traditions: From the Beacon to camp breakfast  00:54:35 – Game: Two Gobblers and a Jake with Paul Butski  Join the Rack Pack Facebook Group :/ n73gskjt7bfb2ngc   Get ahead of your Game with DeerCast available on iOS and Android devices App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/deerc... Sprinkled in and around the team's technical challenges in this episode, they also manage to get sidetracked discussing golf incidents, audio equipment for capturing wildlife sounds, a listener question about an upcoming bear photo adventure, latest rumours of technological advancements in photography gear, and their excitement about the upcoming PhotoX expo at pictureline where all three of our hosts will reconnect in person and interact with fellow photographers in talks and workshops. Dr. Chamberlain breaks down the mission of the Wild Turkey Lab, a comprehensive archive designed to turn complex research into actionable data for hunters and land managers. We dive deep into the biological impact of habitat fragmentation, explaining how modern land use has inadvertently created the perfect environment for nest predators like raccoons and opossums to decimate turkey productivity.  The conversation takes a tactical turn as we discuss the "reproductive skew" of the wild turkey explaining why all gobblers are not created equal and how selective harvest can influence future poult production. Dr. Chamberlain also shares his personal shift from traditional beads to using red dots on shotguns after a high stakes miss, emphasizing the importance of vision and confidence. How to Grow Your Turkey Population by Trapping Predators with Jared Lurk | 100% Wild Podcast Ep. 464 In this episode of the 100% Wild Podcast, Matt Drury and Tim Kjellsvik are joined by Jared Lurk and Cody West to dive into the essential, yet often overlooked, world of nest predator management. While high-level habitat work is crucial, many landowners are finding that high numbers of raccoons, opossums, and skunks are the primary roadblocks to a thriving wild turkey population. The crew discusses why trapping is a "lost art" that needs to return to the modern hunter's repertoire, sharing how they managed to trap over 140 predators on a single farm to save their food plots. We break down the practical "how-to" of running a long-line trap system, from selecting the right traps to choosing the best baits like tuna, and cat food to outsmart these nest predators. The conversation also covers the tactical shift from trapping to thermal hunting for coyotes, explaining why modern technology makes predator control more efficient than ever. Whether you're trying to protect your corn yield from coons or looking to hear more gobbles this spring, this episode provides the ultimate field guide for creating a greater ecosystem. 00:00:00 – Intro: Getting rid of nuisance critters  00:02:10 – Why trapping is a "lost art" for the modern generation  00:05:30 – Identifying the Problem: High predator counts and zero turkeys  00:07:15 – Baiting Strategy: Using tuna, cat food, and fish oil  00:09:00 – Protecting Food Plots: How coons destroy your corn yield  00:10:40 – The Long Line: Managing 50+ traps on a busy schedule  00:12:40 – Trapping Hotspots: Field edges, hollow trees, and water structures  00:14:45 – Thermal Hunting: Why it out-performs trapping for coyotes  00:16:35 – Dog-Proof Traps: Why they are the best tool for the job  00:32:15 – Skunk Problems: Dealing with the spray after the shot  00:35:10 – Tick Myth-Busting: Do opossums actually eat more ticks than turkeys?  00:40:30 – Snapping Turtle Management: Cleaning out the farm pond  Join the Rack Pack Facebook Group :/ n73gskjt7bfb2ngc   Get ahead of your Game with DeerCast available on iOS and Android devices App Store: https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/deerc... From youth education in bonsai to elite alpine instruction where people's lives are on the line, Joshua Stewart is an educational psychologist who is applying his expertise to a multitude of projects and disciplines. Even though we've been working with Josh for several years now it took sitting down with him on the podcast to fully understand what exactly he does. Ryan and Josh discuss the process of applying psychology, how he processes information, and how Josh takes his knowledge and observations to create strategies that dramatically impact the individuals and organizations he works with. The tangible outcome of Mirai's collaboration with Josh is undeniable, and has created a template for youth education which continues to guide the way The One Tree Project approaches youth programs and participants.  Beyond the immediate and obvious, this conversation helped us also recognize the breadth of educational psychology and its limitless application across less considered arenas of thought. Could this field potentially contribute to the “subjective” nature of bonsai appreciation? Could educational psychology assist in improving objective judging? Even without a concrete answer, it's pretty clear applying educational psychology to the great conundrums of bonsai couldn't hurt, and might just be able to help explain some of the greater questions we wrestle with. Who knows, maybe we would even gain a better understanding of ourselves in the process. If you enjoyed the episode, be sure to check out Josh's podcast Evidence in the Wild here to hear from other experts and colleagues in his world of educational psychology.

How to Master 1031 Exchanges for Hunting Land | 100% Wild Podcast Ep. 463 In the fourth and final podcast of our Cultivating Value series, Matt Drury and Tim Kjellsvik sit down with Joe Dierker, owner of First Harvest Land Exchange, to demystify the most powerful financial tool for landowners: the 1031 Exchange. While Episode One touched on financing, this episode dives deep into the high-stakes world of tax deferral strategies and building long-term wealth through real estate. Joe explains the "make or break" mechanics of using a Qualified Intermediary (QI) to avoid the "constructive receipt" of funds, which can instantly blow up your exchange and trigger a massive tax bill. Whether you are a first-time flipper or looking to secure a "forever farm" legacy, you will learn the critical differences between long-term capital gains, short-term marginal rates, and how the step-up in basis can benefit your heirs. The conversation pulls back the curtain on the rigid timelines that govern these deals, including the 45-day identification window and the 180-day completion deadline. Joe reveals expert tips on the Three-Property Rule, why you must exchange for equal or greater value and equity, and how "mortgage boot" can lead to unexpected tax liabilities. We also tackle complex scenarios like reverse 1031 exchanges, carving out primary residences under Section 121, and navigating the "Ozarks Condo" trap. This series finale provides the ultimate masterclass in financial literacy for the modern hunter and land investor. 00:00:00 – Intro to the podcast 00:04:00 – What is a 1031 Exchange?
