Ep49 — FyneFest 2023: Does Independence in Brewing Still Matter?

During one of our first ever panel discussions at FyneFest, held way back in 2019, we spoke about the importance of independence in brewing. Not only were the results of the conversation inconclusive, two of the breweries represented in that discussion—Hawkshead and Harbour— have since sold out to larger corporations…With several years having passed since this talk took place, and the brewing landscape also having changed dramatically during this time, we felt it was time to return to it once again and ask: is independence more important than ever? Join Matthew Curtis for a debate featuring an expert panel to work out if there is still genuine value for both breweries and their customers in remaining independent, or if it's time to sell out and cash in, while there's still time.Featuring Darron Anley (Siren Craft Brew), Vik Stronge (Magic Rock), Matt Clarke and Michelle Gay (Lakes Brew Co.)We're able to produce The Pellicle Podcast directly thanks to our Patreon subscribers, and our sponsors Loughran Brewers Select. I just saw the movie Miss Potter, the story of author and book illustrator Beatrix Potter of Peter Rabbit. I learned so much from her and how she never gave up on her vision. I will share my insights here with you and how to not get trapped in the negative self talk or what the nay sayers tell you. Born into an upper-middle-class household, Potter was educated by governesses and grew up isolated from other children. She had numerous pets and spent holidays in Scotland and the Lake District, developing a love of landscape, flora and fauna, all of which she closely observed and painted. Potter's study and watercolours of fungi led to her being widely respected in the field of mycology. In her thirties, Potter self-published the highly successful children's book The Tale of Peter Rabbit. Following this, Potter began writing and illustrating children's books full-time. Potter wrote over sixty books, with the best known being her twenty-three children's tales. With the proceeds from the books and a legacy from an aunt, in 1905 Potter bought Hill Top Farm in Near Sawrey, a village in the Lake District. Over the following decades, she purchased additional farms to preserve the unique hill country landscape. In 1913, at the age of 47, she married William Heelis, a respected local solicitor from Hawkshead. Potter was also a prize-winning breeder of Herdwick sheep and a prosperous farmer keenly interested in land preservation. She continued to write and illustrate, and to design spin-off merchandise based on her children's books for British publisher Warne until the duties of land management and her diminishing eyesight made it difficult to continue. Potter died of pneumonia and heart disease on 22 December 1943 at her home in Near Sawrey at the age of 77, leaving almost all her property to the National Trust. She is credited with preserving much of the land that now constitutes the Lake District National Park. Potter's books continue to sell throughout the world in many languages with her stories being retold in songs, films, ballet, and animations, and her life is depicted in two films and a television series. --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sheryl-benjy/support

...in which we take a warm-weather wander from Far to Near Sawrey in the footsteps of author, illustrator, farmer and countrywoman Beatrix Potter. In the company of long-time Hilltop volunteer and Beatrix Potter Society member Janet Edwards, we trace Wilfin Beck to Moss Eccles Tarn – one of Mrs Heelis' favourite spots – and then on into Near Sawrey, her Hilltop and Castle Cottage home for 40 years. Taking the long view of a remarkable life, we discuss the childhood holidays that gifted shy, talented and independent-minded young Beatrix a lifelong love of Lakeland; we learn about the genesis of her seven-times rejected 'little books for little hands'; we hear about her tragic first love – and the 'spring' that 'came to her late in life' that unfolded with Hawkshead solicitor William Heelis; before considering her extraordinary legacy, not only to children's literature and hill farming, but also the National Trust. They last saw him at The Chelsea Flower Show and in this episode he shares some of the plants from that garden, alongside seasonal favourites from his two-acre Suffolk plot. His home garden sees him battle flooding at one end, while he experiments with a dry garden at the other. Then there's the kitchen garden and his propagation trials and tribulations! One thing's for sure, Tom Hoblyn has the gardening bug good and proper as the plant list attests... On this week's episode, the boys (minus Todd) break down the Homa/Finau playoff at Riviera, question whether this loss will only build more ammunition against Finau as someone who can't win, and use the 3rd round suspension at Riviera to tell a few stories of the worst conditions we've ever played golf in.Then (27:00) we continue our series on junior golf this month and spend the rest of the time talking with Hailey Stegemann, a current high school senior, who will be playing Division 1 golf at Tennessee Tech this fall. She  earned Southwest Ohio High School Girls Golf Coaches Association (SWOHSGGCA) First Team Division 2 honors her last three years and has worked really hard on her game. She spent a lot of time breaking down the college recruiting process and how that works for other high school golfers trying to get recruited, and she gives some great insights for players/parents to consider when trying to get a college scholarship in golf.

Time. It makes fools of us all. When listening back to this episode I couldn't decide whether to publish or not, as so much has changed over the last 12 months. However, I feel this episode is still relevant and worthwhile. Perhaps serving as a marker of how we felt about independence in beer in 2019, feelings that have likely intensified significantly over the past few months. Independence is hugely important to me, but getting to the bottom of why it's so important is challenging. On this panel I'm joined by Eddie Lofthouse, founder of Harbour Brewing in Cornwall, Matt Clarke, who at the time of this recording was the head brewer at Hawkshead Brewery in Cumbria, and Kevin Brooks, who at the time was working for US importer Shelton Brothers, but has recently left to set up his own company, Oasthouse Creative.  The reason I was so reticent about publishing isn't just because during this panel I don't really manage to gather enough evidence to make a case for independence. But since then, Matt Clarke has been made redundant, along with 14 other staff at Hawkshead, as its owner Halewood Wines and Spirits—who acquired the brewery in March 2017—covered its losses during the financial difficulties created by the pandemic. For me, this signified how important independence is, and what it means: control, or the lack of. In making those redundancies I feel the heart and soul—its people—has been torn out of Hawkshead Brewery. This episode is also evidence of how fast the beer industry moves. To my panelists, if you're listening, thank you for being on this episode. And, if your opinions have changed since its recording, please drop me a line, as I'd love to get you back on the show to talk about it. I hope you enjoy this one folks — and just a reminder that this was recorded at a festival, so there's a little background noise, but hopefully it's not too intrusive.  Host: Matthew Curtis Guests: Matt Clarke — Hawkshead, Eddie Lofthouse — Harbour, Kevin Brooks — Shelton Bros. Read more at www.pelliclemag.comSupport our podcast at patreon.com/pelliclemag
