President Donald Trump's trade threats and tariffs have brought uncertainty to markets worldwide. Canada has responded with its own counter tariffs. Should Ontarians expect to pay more at the grocery store? And is there a risk that companies could exploit the chaos and bump up sticker prices regardless? We discuss with Stuart Trew, director of the Trade and Investment Research Project at the Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives; Mike von Massow, food economist and professor at the University of Guelph; Karl Littler, senior vice-president of public affairs at the Retail Council of Canada; and Tu Nguyen, economist and director of environmental, social, and governance for RSM Canada.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

During COVID, corporations blamed supply chain shocks for rising prices while quietly raising prices higher than costs, thereby boosting their profits to record levels. We know they did this because they bragged about doing it on corporate earnings calls. Economist Hal Singer warns that Trump's proposed tariffs could spark a repeat, giving corporations another “golden opportunity” to jack up prices under the guise of higher costs. He explains why tools like antitrust enforcement and interest rate hikes aren't enough to stop price gouging—and why failing to curb greedflation could carry a steep political price. Hal Singer is an economist, antitrust expert, and Managing Director at Econ One Research, where he specializes in competition policy, regulatory economics, and consumer protection. He's a professor at the University of Utah and a leading voice on market power, price gouging, and the intersection of antitrust and inequality. "An inflation conspiracy theory is infecting the Democratic Party," The Washington Post frets. "'Greedflation' is a nonsense idea," The Economist insists. "Harris' plan to stop price gouging could create more problems than it solves," CNN warns. Over the last few years, as the prices of groceries, cars, and other necessities have risen, often dramatically, leading news outlets and influential pundits have claimed that these rising prices are simply a matter of supply and demand. Corporations aren't taking advantage of inflation, we're told; they're simply responding to it. If materials are in short supply, or if there's a surge in demand, retailers have no choice but to raise prices to control production flows and costs. Likewise, if prices of goods are significantly higher, then the people who want those goods enough to pay higher prices can still have them. But these pat arguments don't hold up to scrutiny. Since the most recent round of inflation began, multiple studies have shown that corporations are indeed taking advantage of inflation, using tactics like price gouging to boost profits while creating barriers to quality food, medication, and other essentials. So what explains this discrepancy? On this episode, we examine the tendency of media to defend corporate price-gouging and other inflationary maneuvers, how high status pundits and Serious Economists critique the White House from the right on this issue and condescend to anyone who might be even slightly suspicious that corporations are animated by something other than just the Invisible Hand, painting them as wacko conspiracy theorist who simply need to take the vaulted "Econ 101." Our guest is the Revolving Door Project's Dylan Gyauch-Lewis.

Greedflation - companies exploiting a high inflation environment to raise prices relatively more than costs - has grabbed attention and headlines in economics commentary, but the evidence to prove definitively whether it took place on a wide scale in the post-COVID period is not conclusive. This week, we chat with our academic partner Alberto Cavallo, professor at Harvard Business School and co-founder of PriceStats, about a new working paper in which he and his co-authors take a deep dive into cost and pricing dynamics during the pandemic years. They employ unique data sets and analysis to determine whether, where and when excessive mark-ups on goods prices took place along the supply chains during the high inflation years of 2021-2023.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Here for the good, the bad, and the ugly in state and national politics. On today's show: More students were arrested for taking part in Palestinian solidarity and ceasefire encampments. Now more than 2,000 students have been arrested - more than at any time since the anti-Vietnam War demonstration of the 1960s.  Another new poll finds that about 20% of voters in five key battleground states are less likely to vote for Biden in November because of his handling of the Israeli assault on Gaza.  Tough loss for the UAW at the Mercedes-Benz plant in Alabama. To put it in the words of one Mercedes-Benz worker: “This is probably the most strategic and organized union busting campaign in decades.” Biggest study of “greedflation” finds what most of us have suspected: big corporations, especially the big Fossil Fuel corporations, squeezed us for record profits while blaming it on “inflation.”  Meanwhile, some scientists are looking to fracking wastewater for a source of lithium for electric car batteries.  PA is the cyber-school capital and our kids are worse off for it. In the period from 2018 to 2022, the cyber-charter industry gained an additional $485.5 million in taxpayer dollars to line the pockets of executives.  National liberal groups are biting themselves in the butt by fawning over Rep. The Only “Tax” Government Wants to “Repeal”

We have heard the saying that the two most certain things are death and taxes. Rarely do governments repeal any of the many taxes they impose. However, a bunch of politicians in Congress and some in the Senate want to "repeal" a certain "tax" as a matter of social justice. This "tax" is the so-called "pink tax." Because women may pay more on average for certain products and services than men, activists call this extra expense the "pink tax." Congress has proposed the "Pink Tax Repeal Act" for the fifth time! Perhaps they will finally "repeal" the "pink tax." Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey has studies showing female products with higher prices than similar non-female products. Is this because companies like to oppress women and gouge them for more money? In this episode we look at some products and services to see if there aren't other explanations for why prices can differ. We observe King Ahab whining that Naboth won't sell him a particular vineyard at the price Ahab offered as a Biblical example for why Christians shouldn't fall for victim mentality schemes like the "pink tax." The "pink tax" is not a tax, and we don't need a law with chilling effects to "repeal" it. And the peasants suffer from the resulting poor coordination between supply and demand. We listened with frustration to an episode of Stuff You Should Know, in which they blame sellers for inflation in this country and call it Greedflation. The problem was that they were very close to seeing the truth, which is that government printed money causing the inflation to begin with, and then colluded with businesses to control natural competition. This week on CounterSpin: In the final quarter of 2023, after-tax corporate profits reached an all-time high of $2.8 trillion. As reported by Popular Information, corporate profit margins were at a level not seen since the 1950s, as increases in prices have outpaced increases in costs. Capitalism 101 says this shouldn't happen, because competing companies will step in with lower prices and grab some market share, right? What's different now? Abject greed, abetted by policy, and whistled past by the press corps. As one economist put it, “If people are paying $3 for a dozen eggs last week, they'll pay $3 this week. And firms take advantage of that.” One reason we have details on “greedflation” is the work of the Groundwork Collaborative. We spoke with their economist and managing director of policy and research, Rakeen Mabud, a few months back. Advocates warned that overturning Roe v. Wade would not be the end, and it wasn't. The court is now entertaining challenge to the legality of the abortion medication mifepristone, used safely and effectively for decades, including invoking the 1873 Comstock Act, about sending “obscene materials” through the mail. The Washington Post has described it as a “confusing legal battle,” but CounterSpin got clarity from the Guttmacher Institute's Rachel K. Jones last year.     The post Rakeen Mabud on Greedflation / Rachel K. Jones on Mifepristone appeared first on KPFA.

In this episode, Rob exposes the money matrix system and who controls the world's money. Rob also talks about being banned from a studio for speaking the truth and his publishers REFUSING to publish his new book The Money Matrix. Rob then reveals how you can beat the systems in place and find wealth and success in a system rigged against you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Four powerful entities control the world's money, banks, corporations, powerful people and powerful funds. If you don't have a product to sell or make money from, then you are the product. The banks do not care about you, to them you are a way to make money via interest, taxes and inflation. If you have money in the banks you are taking the risk and the banks are making the profit. If you borrow money from the banks for assets that produce you income you are making the money and the banks are taking the risk. Whatever the government say inflation is, double it. The figures we are being given aren't real. The banks can leverage your money 10 to 1, and if they lose your money you have barely any protection. If you research and tweak your lifestyle a lot of personal expenses you can legitimately turn into business expenses. Inflation isn't an accident but a strategy. When they government pay off their own debt through inflation, they're paying your debt off as well.   BEST MOMENTS "I was banned from a London podcast studio for discussing this” “You are a product of the bank and they make trillions out of you” “Greedflation is when greedy corporate entities, like energy companies…they blame inflation when they are actually monopolising” “The golden rule to making money is you have to beat the inflation rate” “The banks are allowed to profit on your money” “Much of what you're spending personally could be a business expense” “Inflation is not an accident, it's a strategy” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter   https://robmoore.com/podbooks rob.team ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. This week on CounterSpin: The rate of inflation is down. Prices, though, are still high, and Americans are struggling to afford food, cars and housing. Speaking of people having trouble affording basic necessities, “cut up the credit cards” is  the sort of advice that politicians and pundits dole out and that corporate news media presents as a respectable worldview, worthy of our attention. Another view acknowledges that the same people who earn wages also buy groceries. Pretending that we're pitted against one another is not just misinformation but disinformation. Live from STUDIO G- in the heart of America- I'm STEVE GRUBER- saying the things you wish you could -every day-  fighting for you from the Foxhole of Freedom and defending this great nation-- this is THE STEVE GRUBER SHOW!   Here are 3 big things you need to know right now—   Number One— Here is a brand new word for you—Greedflation—apparently corporations have been using Bidenomics to their advantage—by piling on the prices and blaming inflation—to help the bottom line—   Number Two— Donald Trump caught a couple of Big wins in court yesterday—as the numerous cases against him are having trouble standing up to actual scrutiny—and he calls for the cases to be tossed out altogether—   Number Three— Let's take a few minutes to sort a couple things out that some of you have been sending me notes on recently—and that is—advertising—it seems to annoy some of you so I want to help you understand why we do what we do—and its not just me—   Those of us in conservative media have been targeted 100 ways to Sunday to silence our voices—we are not only silenced but we are labeled as far-right disinformation or misinformation—and are basically blacklisted—   Now, while I work through this so you have a better understanding of some of the challenges all of of us on the right face every day—I also invite you to join the conversation—on the Common Sense Hotline— and yes we will try to get in as many of you as possible—the number is 877-310-9966— and we can talk about anything you want today—   We call it Free for All Friday—anything you want to discuss is on the table—   So again, 877-310-9966—the toll free Common Sense Hotline is open for business—we can cover Bidenomics, the Open Border, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, the War on Christians—anything at all in fact—   The rules are simple—first, keep it clean, no foul language—that is not up for discussion—basically everything else is—ask me a question—tell me how things are for you—all of it—   And while Mr. Producer lines up the calls and tells me who is up—we will go from there—tell him you name—what state you are from and the topic you want to hit—OK?   So again, 877-310-9966—the toll-free Common-Sense Hotline is waiting for you—   So, it's no secret that the left wing media machine whether on TV, radio or online—is working everyday to silence voices like mine—they try to cancel us, censor us, smear us and generally do anything they can to make sure we are discredited—and when that didn't work very well—they turned to another attack—de-monetize us—   We don't get agency buys—because the big names in this world like McDonalds or Wal-Mart or whomever—they are afraid of their own shadows on many days—so they won't even come on the air—WHY?   Because the media dictators threaten them with the portable rent-a-riot—you know, they will call them radical racist election deniers if they put their money on conservative platforms—ITS NOT TRUE OF COURSE—BUT that doesn't matter—   These people turn to disgraced smear machines like the ones running overtime at The Southern Poverty Law Center—who slimes Christians and other traditional groups like focus on the family as hate groups—Yeah, hate groups—when of course nothing could be further from the truth—   So, we get creative and partner with Patriot companies—that are also putting themselves on the line and standing up for truth and the American Way—by advertising on conservative America First platforms they risk getting smeared by the Soros operatives—and their colleagues almost everywhere—   So, when you see me and others on the right take time to promote American companies that are also trying to survive in a hostile business environment—please understand we are doing this to defend Free Speech and the principals of the Bill of Rights—and again, to put America First—   Without these brave companies, we might well lose our voices forever—so please be patient and understand it is a matter of doing what it takes to make sure our voices are heard—and not trampled under the ignorant herd of imbeciles that don't care one bit about the First Amendment—   And with that— get in the game, speak up and be heard—call 877-310-9966—the toll free Common Sense Hotline to The Steve Gruber Show—

She is also Chair and Co-Founder of Level Forward, an ecosystem of storytellers, entrepreneurs, and social change-makers dedicated to balancing artistic vision, social impact, and stakeholder return. She also created the nonprofit Peace is Loud, which uses storytelling to advance social movements, and the Daphne Foundation, which supports organizations working for a more equitable, fair, and peaceful New York City. She is Co-Founder of Fork Films, a nonfiction media production company, which produces original documentaries and the podcast All Ears. Her latest film, which she co-directed with Kathleen Hughes, is The American Dream and Other Fairy Tales.Heirs and heiresses have gotten into a lot of trouble down the years trying to impose their will on the world. I think that my job, if I have one, is to impose the will of the world on wealthy people instead of the other way around.Abigail DisneyWe need to reinvigorate the IRS, we need to reinvigorate OSHA, we need to reinvigorate the NLRB and the other referees that have been made anemic by the constant assault of budget cuts.Abigail DisneyIt is amazing to me that, as this far rightwing guy, [Roy Disney] would never have treated his workers in a million years the way that the CEO at the time—Bob Iger, who was toying with running for president as a Democrat—was treating them on the regular. And that was the total capture of the entire American political spectrum by an idea about work and working that was the inverse—in a relatively short period of time— of what my grandfather was doing as a matter of course.Abigail DisneyErica Payne is the founder and president of Patriotic Millionaires, an organization of high-net-worth individuals that aims to restructure America's political economy to suit the needs of all Americans. Their work includes advocating for a highly progressive tax system, a livable minimum wage, and equal political representation for all citizens. She is the co-author, with Morris Pearl, of Tax the Rich: How Lies, Loopholes and Lobbyists Make the Rich Even Richer. As far as I can tell, the billionaire class bought up the entire Republican Party and a sufficient number of Democrats that they got a stranglehold on this economy. What they basically created is a system that guarantees we become more unequal more quickly over time, they destabilize the entire country, they threaten democratic capitalism around the world…Mathematically, there's absolutely no direction this country can go in other than more unequal. And we're looking at a game of economic Jenga, where we're basically pulling money out of the bottom and the middle and putting it on the top and the whole thing's in the process of collapsing.Erica PayneIf they are talking to you about something other than money, they are stealing your money. So the next time someone is talking to you about abortion, or transgender rights, or critical race theory, or any of these other things, you can rest assured that these politicians on the back end are stealing your money.Erica PayneI'm glad you mentioned Reagan, because I think liberals and progressives underestimate the gigantic impact this cruel man with a smile had on the culture with his market fundamentalism.Ralph NaderWe are excited to announce a book giveaway featuring "Tax the Rich!: How Lies, Loopholes, and Lobbyists Make the Rich Even Richer" by Erica Payne and Morris Pearl. In Case You Haven't Heard with Francesco DeStantis1. As the reinvigorated Teamsters union engages in a massive contract renegotiation with UPS, the labor group has announced they scored a major victory – elimination of 22.4, the “two-tier” system, meaning “all drivers currently classified under the 22.4 system would be reclassified immediately to Regular Package Car Drivers, placed in seniority, and have their pay adjusted to the appropriate RPCD rate.” The two-tier system has been a central issue for organized labor in recent years, and a catalyst for the proliferation of a more militant labor movement.2. For the past six years, the Department of Energy has been attempting to clean up a “highly radioactive” spill near the Columbia River in Washington State. Now, the Tri-City Herald reports that the spill is “both deeper and broader than anticipated.” The Energy Department is already quoted saying “the soil beneath the 324 Building is so radioactively hot that it would be lethal to a worker on direct contact within two minutes.”3. Amid a slew of reactionary decisions, the Supreme Court somehow made the right call in a major case. In a 5-4 decision, led by Gorsuch, the Court ruled in Mallory v. Norfolk that “Pennsylvania's law establishing personal jurisdiction over a corporation through mandatory registration does NOT violate due process,” Mark Joseph Stern reports. The full opinion is available here.4. The membership of the Screen Actors Guild have already voted overwhelmingly to authorize a strike, yet union president Fran Drescher seems to be merely using that vote as leverage to demand concessions from the studios. In response, Rolling Stone reports that over 300 actors – including household names like Meryl Streep, Julia Louis-Dreyfus, and Quinta Brunson – sent a public letter urging against compromise with the studios in the face of major threats like AI. The letter ends by saying “For our union and its future, this is our moment. We hope that, on our behalf, you will meet that moment and not miss it.”5. A major new report by Good Jobs First found that major corporate polluters in Michigan have been exploiting an anti-pollution subsidy in the state for decades. Just since 2010, corporations like GM, Ford, and Stellantis have cheated the Michigan treasury of $2.2 billion. As the group notes, the first step to addressing this corporate welfare crisis is “A proper accounting of which communities are losing how much money.”6. The New York Times reports that, as a result of corrupt dealings within the Department of Education, New York City schoolchildren were fed chicken tenders containing pieces of metal and plastic. This serves as a sobering reminder of the real-world impacts of corporate capture and corruption.7. In Korea, embattled extreme Right-wing president Yoon Suk Yeol – who, among other dangerous proposals has sought to resurrect the country's nuclear weapons program – is seeking to crackdown on the country's unions. In response, the Korea Herald reports that the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions will hold two weeks of sustained strikes intended to drive Yoon from office. Between 400,000 and half a million workers are expected to participate.8. The “Greedflation” theory – which contends the recent spate of inflation is due to corporate profit seeking rather than a tight labor market – has won a major backer: the International Monetary Fund, or IMF. A new report on inflation in Europe published by the international finance agency found that profits account for no less than 45% of price rises since 2022. Import costs accounted for another 40%. This is a stunning finding for a group that typically does everything in its power to aid multinational capital.9. The Institute on Taxation and Economic Policy has announced some major wins from the recent state legislative sessions, including defending Washington State's capital gains tax and blocking a regressive package of tax cuts in Kansas. If he were dead, Grover Norquist would be rolling in his grave. Get full access to Ralph Nader Radio Hour at www.ralphnaderradiohour.com/subscribe
