In a word... yes, it was. But Moneytracker Don Grant joins us this morning and says inflation is affected by many factors. And politics seems to be the very least of those factors.
"An inflation conspiracy theory is infecting the Democratic Party," The Washington Post frets. "'Greedflation' is a nonsense idea," The Economist insists. "Harris' plan to stop price gouging could create more problems than it solves," CNN warns. Over the last few years, as the prices of groceries, cars, and other necessities have risen, often dramatically, leading news outlets and influential pundits have claimed that these rising prices are simply a matter of supply and demand. Corporations aren't taking advantage of inflation, we're told; they're simply responding to it. If materials are in short supply, or if there's a surge in demand, retailers have no choice but to raise prices to control production flows and costs. Likewise, if prices of goods are significantly higher, then the people who want those goods enough to pay higher prices can still have them. But these pat arguments don't hold up to scrutiny. Since the most recent round of inflation began, multiple studies have shown that corporations are indeed taking advantage of inflation, using tactics like price gouging to boost profits while creating barriers to quality food, medication, and other essentials. So what explains this discrepancy? On this episode, we examine the tendency of media to defend corporate price-gouging and other inflationary maneuvers, how high status pundits and Serious Economists critique the White House from the right on this issue and condescend to anyone who might be even slightly suspicious that corporations are animated by something other than just the Invisible Hand, painting them as wacko conspiracy theorist who simply need to take the vaulted "Econ 101." Our guest is the Revolving Door Project's Dylan Gyauch-Lewis.
Given voters' concerns over rising food and housing costs, Kamala Harris has pledged to combat price gouging if elected president, though she has yet to clearly lay out the hallmarks of the rest of her economic policy. In part 2, Bob Pollin, economist and advisor to U.S. Senator Bernie Sanders and Representative Pramila Jayapal on Medicare For All, explains the meaning of price gouging and delves into the causes of inflation during the COVID pandemic.
Greedflation - companies exploiting a high inflation environment to raise prices relatively more than costs - has grabbed attention and headlines in economics commentary, but the evidence to prove definitively whether it took place on a wide scale in the post-COVID period is not conclusive. This week, we chat with our academic partner Alberto Cavallo, professor at Harvard Business School and co-founder of PriceStats, about a new working paper in which he and his co-authors take a deep dive into cost and pricing dynamics during the pandemic years. They employ unique data sets and analysis to determine whether, where and when excessive mark-ups on goods prices took place along the supply chains during the high inflation years of 2021-2023.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Some prices remain stubbornly high for no apparent reason other than producer greed. The supply chains are flowing, and inventories are up. Compounding the greed demonstrated by manufacturers and retailers, is a pernicious right-wing media that is spinning hard. They want Americans to think the economy is in the tank, when nothing could be farther from the truth. In today's commentary we drill down on both sides arguments. I hope you'll listen.
In today's episode, fresh off an interview at the Schwab Network in NYC, Jared reveals the weirdness of the New York Stock Exchange, as well as topics such as Nvidia's recent 10-for-1 stock split, California's bump in minimum wages, greedflation and rising fast food prices, and why it's a bad idea to finance used cars. He also addresses readers' questions, including his thoughts on the FDIC's $250K insurance limits and people's irrational fear that the US dollar will lose its status as the reserve currency.

We have heard the saying that the two most certain things are death and taxes. Rarely do governments repeal any of the many taxes they impose. However, a bunch of politicians in Congress and some in the Senate want to "repeal" a certain "tax" as a matter of social justice. This "tax" is the so-called "pink tax." Because women may pay more on average for certain products and services than men, activists call this extra expense the "pink tax." Congress has proposed the "Pink Tax Repeal Act" for the fifth time! Perhaps they will finally "repeal" the "pink tax." Pennsylvania Senator Bob Casey has studies showing female products with higher prices than similar non-female products. Is this because companies like to oppress women and gouge them for more money? In this episode we look at some products and services to see if there aren't other explanations for why prices can differ. We observe King Ahab whining that Naboth won't sell him a particular vineyard at the price Ahab offered as a Biblical example for why Christians shouldn't fall for victim mentality schemes like the "pink tax." The "pink tax" is not a tax, and we don't need a law with chilling effects to "repeal" it. A federal report suggests grocery stores are making huge profits off what's being called "greedflation," the economic idea that businesses kept prices high well after pandemic-era demands cooled off. Dean Baker, a senior economist at the Center for Economic and Policy Research (CEPR), discusses “greedflation” and the latest inflation report, which shows a 3.5% increase since March 2023. Plus, we air WABE Southside reporter DorMiya Vance's feature from the “Young Business” series. The story spotlights two Black women who opened an agriculture business that opened during the pandemic. Is greedflation real? In a socialist country the answer would be yes. The greed is allowed only for the powerful elites. And the peasants suffer from the resulting poor coordination between supply and demand. We listened with frustration to an episode of Stuff You Should Know, in which they blame sellers for inflation in this country and call it Greedflation. The problem was that they were very close to seeing the truth, which is that government printed money causing the inflation to begin with, and then colluded with businesses to control natural competition. The resulting inflation is because of government greed not grocery store greed!Listen to the full episode:Greedflation Is Real | STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOWFollow Us:YouTubeTwitterFacebookTumblrAll audio & videos edited by: Jay Prescott Videography
This week on CounterSpin: In the final quarter of 2023, after-tax corporate profits reached an all-time high of $2.8 trillion. As reported by Popular Information, corporate profit margins were at a level not seen since the 1950s, as increases in prices have outpaced increases in costs. Capitalism 101 says this shouldn't happen, because competing companies will step in with lower prices and grab some market share, right? What's different now? Abject greed, abetted by policy, and whistled past by the press corps. As one economist put it, “If people are paying $3 for a dozen eggs last week, they'll pay $3 this week. And firms take advantage of that.” One reason we have details on “greedflation” is the work of the Groundwork Collaborative. We spoke with their economist and managing director of policy and research, Rakeen Mabud, a few months back. Advocates warned that overturning Roe v. Wade would not be the end, and it wasn't. The court is now entertaining challenge to the legality of the abortion medication mifepristone, used safely and effectively for decades, including invoking the 1873 Comstock Act, about sending “obscene materials” through the mail. The Washington Post has described it as a “confusing legal battle,” but CounterSpin got clarity from the Guttmacher Institute's Rachel K. Jones last year. The post Rakeen Mabud on Greedflation / Rachel K. Jones on Mifepristone appeared first on KPFA.

Are grocery prices high because of supply chain problems and rising costs? Or is it because major grocery chains took advantage of those trends to pad their profits? A new report from the Federal Trade Commission suggests the latter. We’ll unpack what the report says. Plus, Biden cancels $5.8 billion in student debt for public service workers, and we’ll hear key takeaways from CERAWeek, the “Super Bowl” of energy.

In this episode, Rob exposes the money matrix system and who controls the world's money. Rob also talks about being banned from a studio for speaking the truth and his publishers REFUSING to publish his new book The Money Matrix. Rob then reveals how you can beat the systems in place and find wealth and success in a system rigged against you. KEY TAKEAWAYS Four powerful entities control the world's money, banks, corporations, powerful people and powerful funds. If you don't have a product to sell or make money from, then you are the product. The banks do not care about you, to them you are a way to make money via interest, taxes and inflation. If you have money in the banks you are taking the risk and the banks are making the profit. If you borrow money from the banks for assets that produce you income you are making the money and the banks are taking the risk. Whatever the government say inflation is, double it. The figures we are being given aren't real. The banks can leverage your money 10 to 1, and if they lose your money you have barely any protection. If you research and tweak your lifestyle a lot of personal expenses you can legitimately turn into business expenses. Inflation isn't an accident but a strategy. When they government pay off their own debt through inflation, they're paying your debt off as well. BEST MOMENTS "I was banned from a London podcast studio for discussing this” “You are a product of the bank and they make trillions out of you” “Greedflation is when greedy corporate entities, like energy companies…they blame inflation when they are actually monopolising” “The golden rule to making money is you have to beat the inflation rate” “The banks are allowed to profit on your money” “Much of what you're spending personally could be a business expense” “Inflation is not an accident, it's a strategy” VALUABLE RESOURCES https://robmoore.com/ bit.ly/Robsupporter https://robmoore.com/podbooks rob.team ABOUT THE HOST Rob Moore is an author of 9 business books, 5 UK bestsellers, holds 3 world records for public speaking, entrepreneur, property investor, and property educator. Inflation isn't an issue, says Joe Biden and his Democrat pals. GREEDFLATION is what we need to worry about, they say!
This week on CounterSpin: The rate of inflation is down. Prices, though, are still high, and Americans are struggling to afford food, cars and housing. Speaking of people having trouble affording basic necessities, “cut up the credit cards” is the sort of advice that politicians and pundits dole out and that corporate news media presents as a respectable worldview, worthy of our attention. Another view acknowledges that the same people who earn wages also buy groceries. Pretending that we're pitted against one another is not just misinformation but disinformation. Rakeen Mabud is chief economist and managing director of policy and research at Groundwork Collaborative. They have new work on what's driving grocery prices, and it doesn't involve getting mad at people using food stamps. We'll hear from her today on the show. FRIDAY WRAP: Greedflation works! Tesla blockades! COP28 attendees flew a looong way! Taco Bell's "stain resistant sheets"! Plus, Bill Ackman, STFU!
Live from STUDIO G- in the heart of America- I'm STEVE GRUBER- saying the things you wish you could -every day- fighting for you from the Foxhole of Freedom and defending this great nation-- this is THE STEVE GRUBER SHOW! Here are 3 big things you need to know right now— Number One— Here is a brand new word for you—Greedflation—apparently corporations have been using Bidenomics to their advantage—by piling on the prices and blaming inflation—to help the bottom line— Number Two— Donald Trump caught a couple of Big wins in court yesterday—as the numerous cases against him are having trouble standing up to actual scrutiny—and he calls for the cases to be tossed out altogether— Number Three— Let's take a few minutes to sort a couple things out that some of you have been sending me notes on recently—and that is—advertising—it seems to annoy some of you so I want to help you understand why we do what we do—and its not just me— Those of us in conservative media have been targeted 100 ways to Sunday to silence our voices—we are not only silenced but we are labeled as far-right disinformation or misinformation—and are basically blacklisted— Now, while I work through this so you have a better understanding of some of the challenges all of of us on the right face every day—I also invite you to join the conversation—on the Common Sense Hotline— and yes we will try to get in as many of you as possible—the number is 877-310-9966— and we can talk about anything you want today— We call it Free for All Friday—anything you want to discuss is on the table— So again, 877-310-9966—the toll free Common Sense Hotline is open for business—we can cover Bidenomics, the Open Border, the wars in Ukraine and Gaza, the War on Christians—anything at all in fact— The rules are simple—first, keep it clean, no foul language—that is not up for discussion—basically everything else is—ask me a question—tell me how things are for you—all of it— And while Mr. Producer lines up the calls and tells me who is up—we will go from there—tell him you name—what state you are from and the topic you want to hit—OK? So again, 877-310-9966—the toll-free Common-Sense Hotline is waiting for you— So, it's no secret that the left wing media machine whether on TV, radio or online—is working everyday to silence voices like mine—they try to cancel us, censor us, smear us and generally do anything they can to make sure we are discredited—and when that didn't work very well—they turned to another attack—de-monetize us— We don't get agency buys—because the big names in this world like McDonalds or Wal-Mart or whomever—they are afraid of their own shadows on many days—so they won't even come on the air—WHY? Because the media dictators threaten them with the portable rent-a-riot—you know, they will call them radical racist election deniers if they put their money on conservative platforms—ITS NOT TRUE OF COURSE—BUT that doesn't matter— These people turn to disgraced smear machines like the ones running overtime at The Southern Poverty Law Center—who slimes Christians and other traditional groups like focus on the family as hate groups—Yeah, hate groups—when of course nothing could be further from the truth— So, we get creative and partner with Patriot companies—that are also putting themselves on the line and standing up for truth and the American Way—by advertising on conservative America First platforms they risk getting smeared by the Soros operatives—and their colleagues almost everywhere— So, when you see me and others on the right take time to promote American companies that are also trying to survive in a hostile business environment—please understand we are doing this to defend Free Speech and the principals of the Bill of Rights—and again, to put America First— Without these brave companies, we might well lose our voices forever—so please be patient and understand it is a matter of doing what it takes to make sure our voices are heard—and not trampled under the ignorant herd of imbeciles that don't care one bit about the First Amendment— And with that— get in the game, speak up and be heard—call 877-310-9966—the toll free Common Sense Hotline to The Steve Gruber Show—
In late 2021, Isabella Weber, an economist at University of Massachusetts, Amherst published a paper with a new idea. The theory, what she called "seller's inflation," sought to address the confounding fact that the economy was seeing rising high prices and skyrocketing corporate profits. The idea quickly moved from the halls of academia to the political arena. And quicker still, it was dismissed—at one point called a "conspiracy theory." But now, in 2023, "greedflation" is popping up across headlines. This week, OTM correspondent Micah Loewinger sits down with Lydia DePillis, a reporter on the business desk at The New York Times, to talk about her 2022 article dissecting the arguments for and against greedflation's impact on the economy, and everything that's happened since.

Who's to blame for current inflation? It's one of the spiciest debates these days, with many fingers pointed at one villain: corporations. Today on the show, an economist who looked for evidence on whether or not greedflation is the answer.
It's News Day Tuesday! Sam and Emma break down the biggest headlines of the day. First, they run through updates on the subpoena of Donald Trump, E. Jean Carroll's new charges against Trump, a vehicular strike on the White House, the slow acceptance of greedflation theory by economic elites, and Ron DeSantis' police, also tackling Kevin McCarthy and Joe Biden agreeing on their desire to potentially agree to negotiate an agreement on the debt ceiling negotiation. Sam and Emma dive a little deeper into the absurd coverage of the greed factor in inflation, the lingering desire to make it seem like a fringe factor, and how to push the Fed to actually tackle this issue. They then parse through Minnesota's incredible progress with a trifecta and a one-seat Senate majority, walking through the history of the DFL, the incredible pro-labor legislation they're passing, and the importance of actually using power when you have it (*cough* national Democrats *cough*). And in the Fun Half: MR has some technical troubles (totally unrelated to the gerontocratic control of the studio), they watch Newsmax talking heads demean Fox for following the same human rights laws that they – as residents of NYC – also must follow, and Ren from Oregon dives into the private debt issue in the US. Mike from Portland solves Sam's computer issues, William from Portland reflects on the legacy of Michael Brooks, and Greg from Beaumont dives into tacit collusion, before Brian from Germany parses through some crazy attacks on mutual aid activism in North Carolina. Mississippi schools crack down on any non-normative gender expression, and Tusli runs to the defense of killer Daniel Penny, plus, your calls and IMs!
