A few weeks ago, I came across one of my favourite Native trees: the Tree Fuchsia. Most people in the world that grow house plants know Fuchsia as an elegant producer of flowers. I took my Dutch Cousin to Banks Peninsula, and he simply thought I was taking the micky: how can you have a Fuchsia species that grows up to 12 meters? The flowers are beautiful and the bark is outstanding – literally. But the seeds are something else again, dark purple, soft and edible. Instead of eating these seeds raw or cooking them into a jam, I felt they were miniature purple plums that could be planted to become new Fuchsia seedlings, and that's what became my new harvesting project. These seeds are tricky to germinate, simply because they are so tiny. Soak them in water as soon as they are soft and ripe, try to remove the flesh or pulp, and spread the seeds on a good, wet seed-raising mix in a shady spot. When they germinate, put them into a lighter, warm, moist place and keep your fingers crossed. And just a few days ago I noticed our Damson Plums were ripening quickly (despite Canterbury's awful weather this “summer”). The plums were falling off the tree, so I reported this feature to my Gardener Supreme, and decided to harvest them right-away. Now, the “normal” way to harvest these beautiful plums is by going up a ladder and grabbing the fruits within reach, chucking them in a bag before going down the ladder and tossing them in a large bucket on the orchard floor, before climbing back up. The “Straight shoots” at the top often do not bear fruit – they are a waste of time climbing. After grabbing all the plums, way up high, you can start the process of creating one of the best Jams in the World (see recipe at the end). As many people know by now, it's best to prune stonefruit trees soon after harvest – it keeps the tree shorter and easier to manage next year and it opens the damson tree up to wind and space on the inside. I thought: “maybe it's a good idea to prune at the same time as harvesting!” Two birds with one stone and not too long on the ladder with arthritis, etc. So far, it's worked pretty well. Heaps of fruit and much quicker retrieval of the ripe fruits. Of course, when consulting Lynda Hallinan's book on Damsons, I discovered that I was certainly not the first one to come up with that idea. And you know what? The Jam that Julie chucked into the jars is absolutely amazing! Jam Recipe – a Mix of Lynda Hallinan's recommendations and Julie's moderations For a kilo of Damson plums: Boil them up in half a cup of water. Bring to a gentle simmer, until it's “red and pulpy”. Add 750 grams of sugar. Stir until dissolved. Boil for 10 to 15 minutes… keep an eye on it so it doesn't get burnt. Take out all the stones with a slotted spoon or tongs (the reason is simple: those stones can break your teeth!!). Test the mixture for “setting” – not too tough, please! Chuck them into the sterilised jars. Now think about some croissants from Le Panier filled with damson plum jam! LISTEN ABOVE See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
At 40, I thought menopause was just hot flashes that hit in your 50s—sh*t, was I wrong. As someone who considers herself educated & in tune with my body: I can not believe how unaware I was about my own body. As I was sharing what I thought was a panic attack with a dear girlfriend of mine, Kacy Fleming, she dropped a bombshell on me: “Girl, have you heard of perimenopause?” I came back home & started sharing this with my girlfriends who all said the same thing 'I had no idea' And with that, this kitchen table conversation was born as a way for us to be educated on our bodies & find language, awareness, community & resources in it. Kacy Fleming, founder of Fuschia Tent, and menopause whisperer, designed a sanctuary designed to guide women through the transformative journey of perimenopause and beyond. We dive into the signs your body might be screaming at you—ones that could easily be mistaken for anxiety—and talk about how to reclaim your health, energy, and confidence during one of life's biggest transitions.Kacy has created a safe space where women can share, learn, and take intentional action to understand their bodies. You'll walk away from this episode armed with awareness, language, and a community ready to support you as you unleash your greatness.-------------Referenced in Episode:January Coaching with Meg: Unleash Your Inner Power January Coaching — Megan Miller: Female KeynoteEpisode 167 with Kacy Fleming: Unleashing Your True Self --------Connect with Kacy Fleming:Website: Menopause Community and Information | The Fuchsia Tent – Fuchsia Tent LLCInstagram: https://www.instagram.com/thefuchsiatentLinkedIn: LinkedIn-----------------------------------------Connect with Meg: Follow Us on Social Media:Instagram: @megan.b.millerLinkedIn: @meganmillerintention Watch Our TEDx Talk: Click hereJoin Our Microstep Monday Newsletter Tribe: Click here-------------------Additional Fuchsia Tent Resources: The Fuchsia Tent Community: 50% Off on annual membership. $175/year.Use this link: https://thefuchsiatent.mn.co/plans/1474157?bundle_token=14dd4c31d9291b7860fe56df46bb357610% Off Fuchsia Tent Coaching Packages / Book a Consultation Here: https://kacyfleming.as.maReference: ATTENTION TO INTENTION for 10% OFF--------------- #MenopauseMatters #PerimenopauseAwareness #WomenInMidlife#MenopauseSupport #PerimenopauseJourney #MidlifeHealth#HormonalHealth #ReclaimYourHealth

Isabelle Imbert welcomes Fuchsia Hart, Sarikhani Curator for the Iranian Collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum in London. Fuchsia is an art historian specialised in the artistic productions of 19th century Iran, ruled by the Qajar dynasty between 1789 and 1925, and particularly on the reign of Fath 'Ali Shah Qajar, who reigned from 1797 till 1834. His patronage is known to us today through his numerous portraits and courtly arts, but also his important architectural patronage of Shia shrines, which is the topic of Fuchsia's ongoing doctoral research. In this episode, with visual artist Fuchsia, we discuss her powerful paintings and how she explores the duality of the angelic and the earthly. We talk about her background growing up abroad in places like Hong Kong and India and how that influenced her world view. We dig into spirituality and spiritual practice and how that informs her work . Together, we also dive deep, discussing the importance of the ecological crisis and how the elevation of consciousness is crucial for humanity to move forward and heal our collective wounds. ------------------- I just finished a one-year residency at Sarabande (Alexander McQueen Foundation) in east London. Since September, 2022 I have had the opportunity to have four solo shows (one in Paris, one at the Sixi Museum in Nanjing, one at Roman Road Gallery in London and one at 10 Chancery Lane Gallery in Hong Kong) as well as take part in three group shows (including one at Christie's Lates). A few words on my practice to give you an idea... I am a mixed-media artist (under the name of fuchsia), working primarily with watercolour and oils and am interested in exploring environmental subjects through harmonious colour palettes and spiritual iconography. I create dream-like landscapes inspired by the renaissance period, Chinese landscape painting, and a few incredible 20th-century surrealist painters (Georgia O'Keeffe, Agnes Pelton...). There are a few recurring core symbols within my 'ethereal landscapes' (heavily influenced by dreams and the subconscious), including angels and pearls. Angels, having been represented for hundreds of years throughout art history, are, to me, universal symbols representing the deepest state of our core as humans - love, vulnerability and innocence - all things we regrettably and gradually let go of when entering adulthood. My paintings aim to highlight certain conflicting moral forces we face in today's complex world, namely issues on climate change and 'spiritual famine' which seem to often preoccupy the minds of the angels. https://www.alafuchsia.com/about https://www.instagram.com/alafuchsia ------------------- See More from Martin Benson *To stay up on releases and content surrounding the show check out my instagram *To contribute to the creation of this show, along with access to other exclusive content, consider subscribing for $0.99/month on Instagram (Link above) Credits: Big Thanks to Matthew Blankenship of The Sometimes Island for the podcast theme music! --- Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/martin-l-benson/support
In her third appearance on the show, Chinese food expert Fuchsia Dunlop joins Tyler and a group of special guests to celebrate the release of Invitation to a Banquet, her new book exploring the history, philosophy, and techniques of Chinese culinary culture. As with her previous appearance, this conversation was held over a banquet meal at Mama Chang and was hosted by Lydia Chang. As they dined, the group discussed why the diversity in Chinese cuisine is still only just being appreciated in the West, how far back our understanding of it goes, how it's represented in the Caribbean and Ireland, whether technique trumps quality of ingredients, why certain cuisines can spread internationally with higher fidelity, what we can learn from the different styles in Indian and Chinese cooking, why several dishes on the table featured Amish ingredients, the most likely mistake people will make when making a stir fry, what Lydia has learned managing an empire of Chinese restaurants, Fuchsia's trick for getting unstuck while writing, and more. Joining Tyler, Fuchsia, and Lydia around the table were Dan Wang, Rasheed Griffith, Fergus McCollough, and Sam Enright. Special thanks to Chef Peter Chang, Lydia, and all the staff at Mama Chang for the wonderful meal. Donate to Conversations with Tyler and help us keep the conversations going. Chinese was the earliest truly global cuisine. When the first Chinese labourers began to sojourn and settle abroad, restaurants appeared in their wake. Yet Chinese food has the curious distinction of being both one of the world's best-loved culinary traditions and one of the least understood. For more than a century, the overwhelming dominance of a simplified form of Cantonese cooking ensured that few foreigners experienced anything of its richness and sophistication - but today that is beginning to change. In Invitation to a Banquet: The Story of Chinese Food (Norton, 2023), the James Beard Award-winning cook and writer Fuchsia Dunlop explores the history, philosophy and techniques of China's rich and ancient culinary culture. Each chapter examines a classic dish, from mapo tofu to Dongpo pork, knife-scraped noodles to braised pomelo pith, to reveal a singular aspect of Chinese gastronomy, whether it's the importance of the soybean, the lure of exotic ingredients or the history of Buddhist vegetarian cuisine. Meeting local food producers, chefs, gourmets and home cooks as she tastes her way across the country, Fuchsia invites readers to join her on an unforgettable journey into Chinese food as it is made, cooked, eaten and considered in its homeland. Weaving together historical scholarship, mouth-watering descriptions of food and on-the-ground research conducted over the course of three decades, Invitation to a Banquet is a lively, landmark tribute to the pleasures and mysteries of Chinese cuisine. This interview was conducted by Dr. Miranda Melcher whose forthcoming book focuses on post-conflict military integration, understanding treaty negotiation and implementation in civil war contexts, with qualitative analysis of the Angolan and Mozambican civil wars. Fuchsia went on a handful of dates with her abuser and decided that he wasn't for her. He was boring. However, soon after it ended, Fuchsia found out she was pregnant and gave the abuser the option to be involved. Unfortunately, he said yes, and Fuchsia had no idea what she was in store for. It began with dismissiveness during a pregancy appointment, but moved to rages, and forcing his new girlfriend into her Fuchsia's life. What should have been a beautiful time in Fuchsia's life became a nightmare as Fuchsia felt like they were scheming to take her baby. It's a story of emotional abuse, custody, court, mediation counter-parenting, threats, temper tantrums, social media, baiting, smear campaigns, entitelment, selfishness, isolation, and fear. This week, we explore Chinese cuisine with cook and food writer Fuchsia Dunlop. In the west, misconceptions and prejudices surround Chinese food: that it's unhealthy, or oily, or simple. In reality, it's a cuisine with ancient roots, that Fuchsia strongly believes is “endlessly thrilling”, and among the best and most sophisticated in the world. Fuchsia is the author of six books on Chinese food, including her newest, Invitation to a Banquet. She tells Lilah there's a lot the west can learn from how people in China approach food.-------We love hearing from you. You can email us at ftweekendpodcast@ft.com. Crispy duck, chow mein, and sweet & sour pork. Many of us have a narrow understanding of Chinese food, its rich history, and the sophisticated culinary culture surrounding it. Chef and author Fuchsia Dunlop is on a quest to show us that there's so much more to Chinese food than our usual Friday night takeaway, and that there's immense joy (and health) to be drawn from it too. Fuchsia tells us about how her love of Chinese cookery began, her experience as the first westerner to train as a chef at the Sichuan Higher Institute of Cuisine and her recommendations for how to order in a restaurant. And can she really salvage Ed's doomed tofu cookery?GuestFuchsia Dunlop, Chef and Author (@fuchsiadunlop)More informationPre-order a copy of Invitation to a Banquet: The story of Chinese food here, published by Particular Books on 31st August Hosted on Acast. We discuss rapid prototyping & how eng leaders can develop better product instincts with David Crawshaw, CTO & Co-Founder @ Tailscale! He shares his leadership journey from Google to Tailscale and how the early product development days at his startup lead to incorporating rapid prototyping principles within their eng org. We also cover strategies and recommendations for those who are new to rapid prototyping, how to work with design & product teams while quickly iterating, navigating the tension between speed & quality, and how to avoid common pitfalls while implementing the process.ABOUT DAVID CRAWSHAWDavid Crawshaw (@davidcrawshaw) is co-founder and CTO of Tailscale. Previously he was a staff engineer at Google, where he specialized in petabyte-scale logs processing. He implemented TCP/IP networking for Fuchsia, as well as ported the Go language platform to iOS and Android."If you're a pre-seed startup in the Bay Area and you are trying to ship something to your first few customers and you ship with 40-something languages, then you've made a mistake, but it's not necessarily true that a large company has made that mistake. For larger companies with more total requirements, I think the big question is can you construct environments where you can experiment without all of these requirements?”- David Crawshaw Join us at ELC Annual 2023!ELC Annual is our flagship conference for engineering leaders. You'll learn from experts in engineering and leadership, gain mentorship and support from like-minded professionals, expand your perspectives, build relationships across the tech industry, and leave with practical prove strategies.Join us this August 30-31 at the Fort Mason Center in San FranciscoFor tickets, head to https://sfelc.com/annual2023SHOW NOTES:David's background at Google & the transition to founding Tailscale (1:51)Early-day challenges at Tailscale w/ prototyping (4:03)How Tailscale discovered & employed rapid prototyping during its early days (6:41)Paradigm shifts around the product-building process & feedback loop (8:37)Recommendations for those new to rapid prototyping (11:20)Shifting your org's culture toward accelerated iteration cycles w/ arbitrary limits (13:36)Frameworks for getting to a faster prototype (16:52)How to work w/ design & product throughout rapid prototyping process (19:26)Navigating the tension between doing things quickly vs. working well (21:51)Where large companies try to rapid prototype & things go wrong (26:29)Trains vs. EVs in the Bay area – a metaphor for rapid iteration (28:46)Bringing that metaphor to software development (31:37)David's perspective on widespread adoption of OpenAI (34:31)Rapid fire questions (39:19)LINKS AND RESOURCESTomorrow, and Tomorrow, and Tomorrow - In this exhilarating novel from Gabrielle Zevin, two friends--often in love, but never lovers--come together as creative partners in the world of video game design, where success brings them fame, joy, tragedy, duplicity, and, ultimately, a kind of immortality. This episode wouldn't have been possible without the help of our incredible production team:Patrick Gallagher - Producer & Co-HostJerry Li - Co-HostNoah Olberding - Associate Producer, Audio & Video Editor https://www.linkedin.com/in/noah-olberding/Dan Overheim - Audio Engineer, Dan's also an avid 3D printer - https://www.bnd3d.com/Ellie Coggins Angus - Copywriter, Check out her other work at https://elliecoggins.com/about/
This week on Rational Security, Alan, Quinta, and Scott braved the haze to talk through the week's (very) big national security news stories, including:“Downstream Effects.” The destruction of the Kakhovka Dam in Ukraine promises a new wave of suffering and environmental devastation for Ukrainians living along the Dnipro River. Who is responsible? And what could the ramifications be?“He's Off to Meet the Wizard, The Wonderful Wizard of Laws.” Over the past few weeks, there has been a steady drip of information about Special Counsel Jack Smith's investigation into former President Trump, leading many to conclude that an indictment is on the horizon. What do we know about the state of the investigation? And where does it seem headed?“Party Animals.” The number of contenders in the 2024 Republican presidential primary has officially doubled, with new candidates like Chris Christie and Mike Pence presenting—or being unable to avoid—the legacy of Jan. 6, among other issues with the direction of the party under former President Trump. What does this mean for the shape of the race? And will it mean for the debate over democratic values?Support this show http://supporter.acast.com/lawfare. Hosted on Acast. First, the Rules Court convenes once again to look at the eligibility of our request for rerolls last week. To resolve the issues with Josh's Favorite Pokémon Is Mewtwo Clause, we're joined by @asteroidera, aka Kel, who was the first Bug Catcher to volunteer and benevolently offer up their Mewtwo. They do EXP. Share's first-ever live trade on-air, and then after some fawning by Josh, we begin our journey in earnest. Although one of us whose name rhymes with Burrito Chug is a Mayor Cheat who had already gotten the Poké Flute and released Marowak's soul, we quickly recount our ascent up the Pokémon Tower and then move onto greener pastures—the endless sea of green and literal sea that is the southerly Routes 12-15. After we've winded our way to Fuchsia City, we find a place that's both never looked better and also decidedly worse without its iconic Safari Zone, which has been replaced with the non-functioning (at least for these two grown adult men) GO Park. What's left but to see what kind of traps Koga and his gang of Jugglers & Tamers have laid... and whether we'll finally make it to our first episode this season without a eulogy.

In this very "B"-centric culture catchup, Matt & Bowen discuss Bros as a movie, a press event and a box office story, Smile's success and its star Sosie Bacon, Björk's newest album Fossora, "it justifies the beans", RHOSLC and RHOP, "fuchsia" as both color and word, Beyoncé edging us all with ver visuals for Renaissance, and Rihanna's announcement that she is the next Super Bowl halftime performer. All this, dream setlists for that halftime performance, stunning vocals, honest admissions, laughter, joy, discussion and podcasting at its finest.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
