The Art of Longevity

Light, fire, water, fruit, and worms; “just the basics”, are Matt Berninger's recurring themes, and these emerge again on his second solo album Get Sunk. One of life's sponges, Berninger is constantly observing and recording the world around him - on paper scraps, whiteboards, garageband files, notes-to-self via text messages and even on baseballs. The sketches of songs ideas, lyrics and poems are transcribed from his brain to his fingertips, ready to go when the songwriting process gets underway. Once you understand this, it's easier to see just how the man has become prolific. Having written lyrics for not one but two albums with his band The National in 2023, his catalogue of solo works is fast developing, first album Serpentine Prison arrived in 2021 (a substantial achievement given that Berninger had some debilitating bouts of depression around the COVID period). After the exercise in traditional, classic song making that was Serpentine Prison, new album Get Sunk is much more an indie pop record not a million miles from The National. It even contains a surefire hit (in the parallel universe where good songs become hits), in the form of drivetime indie single Bonnet Of Pins, destined to become a firm fan favourite. Coming in at 10 tracks, Get Sunk is a lean, mean machine of well-crafted, mid-paced indie and easy on the ear ballads. It's a consistently engaging listen, but some songs, Frozen Oranges, Little By Little, Nowhere Special really showcase Berninger's powers. If this was the 80s, Matt Berninger would have a solo hit record on his hands and a parallel successful career as rock band frontman and solo artist. But, given this is the 21st century streaming era, he'll have to make do with a modestly successful outlet for his prolific creativity - some half-million listeners on his Spotify profile as validation. It's a worthwhile endeavour. Besides, having extra-curricular projects is critical to longevity - very much one of our underlying themes. Berninger's core project, The National, are a rare exception to the rule of a band's career as the proverbial rollercoaster ride. No stratospheric rise as such, more a steady climb. No ‘disintegration' or crash to the bottom for this band, who continue to go from strength to strength it seems. They've never been dropped, now having made 10 albums over 25 years - all of them on the ultra-cool indie label 4AD. The band now is the original line up since the beginning and since The National is Berninger plus two sets of twins, any alternative seems unthinkable. If every band wants the career of Radiohead, then the career of The National can't be too far behind in the dreams of young friends forming indie bands in every small corner of the world. Still, it took a minute. As Berninger quips “longevity takes a long time”...before elaborating on the early days:“We were ignored for the first couple of records, nobody paid attention to us until Alligator and Boxer. Those records were hard fought, but by then, we had four records and so you couldn't pin us down. Then Annie Clark (St. Vincent) and Sufjan Stephens started helping us and we grew this community in Brooklyn that became a really healthy thing for all of us”. Creating a body of work of some four albums before registering on the radar is the way to go, if you can get away with it. By the time High Violet came around in 2010 (and its highly successful successors Trouble Will Find Me, Sleep Well Beast), The National were a bona fide transatlantic success. More than that, however, they represent (probably along with Arctic Monkeys) how a band of the 21st century can achieve a kind of success that is, in essence, a throwback to the old world. Despite this and maybe becauSupport the showGet more related content at: https://www.songsommelier.com/

Andy Farnsworth joins KSL-TV to help audiences decipher #WhatToWatch for the weekend of May 10, 2024. The latest adaptation of the Planet of the Apes movie saga, “Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes,” has outstanding visuals and a surprisingly engaging story. (Check out Steve Salles review here!)  The best thing Andy watched this week was "Nowhere Special," a movie about a terminally ill single father in Ireland who is forced to interview potential adoptive families for his 4-year-old son to live with after he passes. With limited showings at the Megaplex Jordan Commons and the Broadway Centre Cinemas, it's worth the effort to catch a showing.  For streaming, there's a series on AppleTVPlus called "Dark Matter" is an interesting sci-fi tale: A physicist gets mugged one night, and when he wakes up, nothing in his life is like it was just hours before. And Mother of the Bride" on Netflix poorly-cast Brooke Shields as a brides mother dealing with an awkward situation.  The brains behind Fan Effect are connoisseurs of categories surpassing nerdy with a goal to publish a weekly "What to Watch on the Weekend" minisodes, taken from KSL-TV's Friday segment, and two deep-dives a month on shows, creative works, artists, local events, and other fandom topics.  Based in the beautiful beehive state, Fan Effect celebrates Utah's unique fan culture as it has been declared The Nerdiest State in America by TIME, and is hosted by KSL Movie Show's Andy Farnsworth and KSL Podcasts' KellieAnn Halvorsen.   Listen regularly on your favorite platform, at kslnewsradio.com, kslpodcasts.com, or on the KSL NewsRadio App. Join the conversation and get the latest 'nerdly' news on Facebook @FanEffectShow. James Norton (Bob Marley: One Love, Little Women) stars as John, a 35-year-old window cleaner who has dedicated his life to bringing up his 4-year-old son, Michael (Daniel Lamont), after the child's mother left them soon after giving birth. When John is given only a few months left to live, he attempts to find a new, perfect family for Michael, determined to shield him from the terrible reality of the situation. Although initially certain of what he is looking for in the perfect family, John gradually abandons his early convictions, over- whelmed by doubts on the decision. How can he judge a family from a brief encounter? And does he know his own child well enough to make this choice for him? As John struggles to find the right answer to his impossible task, he comes to accept the help of a young social worker, opening himself to solutions he would never have considered. And he finally comes to accept his anger at the injustice of his destiny, the need to share the truth with his son, and to follow the child's instincts on the biggest decision of their lives. Director / Producer / Writer Uberto Pasolini joins us for a conversation on bringing lead actor James Norton (John), how he found BIFA nominated actor Daniel Lamont (Michael), how they became trusted friends before and during the shoot and the story behind this unfettered and heartfelt film. Hobbies and leisure activities aren't just neat ways to give your characters something to do in-between plot beats -- they can also communicate a lot to the reader about the world you're building! Developing hobbies and entertainment in a world also touches on what that culture thinks about work, income, community, and many other components of society. Guest Matt Wallace joins us to discuss the opportunities presented by giving your characters the chance to play, craft, and just muck about with things! How much of a hobby is devoted to pure pleasure? What changes when it's a side hustle that you monetize, or when it becomes competitive in some fashion? What does it mean when your characters have the money to spend on a hobby -- and who's providing them the goods and services they need for it? We explore these considerations and more as we pull apart what it means to kick back and relax in a fictional world.

Support the show (https://www.buymeacoffee.com/suldivanodiale)

Cellulite e Celluloide - Il cinema su Radio Elettrica

Uberto Pasolini made his name in the film industry as a producer with the international success of his film - The Full Monty. He's continued to produce but in recent years he's also turned his hand to writing and directing. As the third film that he's helmed in this way, Nowhere Special, is released in cinemas, he talks to Samira about why he felt the true story of a father with a terminal illness looking for a new family for his four year old, was the foundation for a film he wanted to create himself. From Chaucer, heralding spring in his Canterbury Tales, to Hockney's digital landscapes artists have always celebrated the rich variety of Britain's flora and fauna. Art about nature is crucial to our culture. But last month the House of Commons Environment Audit Committee reported that 'of the G7 countries, the UK has the lowest level of biodiversity remaining.' Front Row investigates this anomaly with George Monbiot, who tomorrow will be streaming Rivercide, a live documentary about the terrible state of our rivers, and artist Ruth Maclennan, whose project Treeline explores the point where forests begin, end and what this reveals. What, they discuss, is the role of art in the environmental crisis? We're exploring issues in contemporary publishing each night this week on Front Row. Yesterday we talked about the gender split in who is getting published now. Tonight Chris Paling talks about his new book A Very Nice Rejection Letter, which tracks the trials and tribulations of the mid-list novelist from selling screenplays to writing alongside the day job. He tells Samira about the realities of life as a writer and we consider the question: can writers actually make a living today? Presenter: Samira Ahmed Producer: Hilary Dunn

The episode continues immediately after the town calls Bart on his BS. He admits he is leaving because things have gotten pretty dull. Revered Johnson gets emotional with his goodbye. This leads Mongo to also get a little emotional and he accidentally clobbers the guy in front of him. Charlie wishes Bart well and as he slaps five with the Sheriff, Bart tells them all to keep the faith. As Bart rides to the edge of town past the blacksmith shop, we see the Waco Kid resting with a popcorn bucket in his lap. He asks Bart where he's headed. Bart simply says, "Nowhere special." The Waco Kid pushes his hat up and looks off into the West. "Nowhere special. I always wanted to go there." Sheriff Bart invites Jim to come along. Jim puts down his popcorn and gets on his horse. Our guest today is author J.W. Webb. J.W. Webb is an English writer living in Georgia. Mostly be writes fantasy, though sometimes diverts into even stranger directions. His epic saga titled, The Legends of Ansu, blends the mystic grandeur of J.R.R. Tolkein with the gritty realism of G.R.R. Martin. Webb's characters are three dimensional and flawed; their world a tapestry of vivid color and constant motion. All the books feature beautiful bespoke sketches by the late Tolkien illustrator, Roger Garland.  Thank you so much for tuning into today's episode.
