You thought you knew U2's origin story? Well, did you know no one actually responded to Larry Mullen's post about wanting to start a band on the Mt Temple bulletin board? Or, did you know that the band once had a flutist and two female backing vocalists onstage? Or that they scored their first TV appearance by fooling the RTE booker into thinking they wrote the Ramones' "Glad to See You Go"? Or that the trace elements of Zoo TV's embrace of Dada and surrealism actually dates back to when Bono and Gavin Friday studied mime in 1979 and that theatricality became a big part of U2's stage show at the time? Or, that after every record label in the UK gave U2 a hard pass on all 4 demos they'd done from 1978-1980, they pulled off one of the great cons ever which finally got them signed to Island Records? We've got the stories behind the stories in this deep dive into the U2 Origin Story.

(Come To The Table 1996).
Singularity is a rarity in any artform, but Gavin Friday is as distinctive an artist now as he was in the late 70s to mid-80s when he was the primary focal point of the unclassifiable Virgin Prunes. In this episode of the IMRO Podcast, Gavin Friday talks to Tony Clayton-Lea about his life in music and art, his solo work, his enduring friendship with U2 and his forthcoming album.

This is a special bonus episode of the podcast. Back in 2017 Niall McCormack and Dr Ciarán Swan curated the Green Sleeves exhibition in the National Print Museum. “This exhibition examines the Irish-printed album cover. Included album covers were all designed or printed in Ireland. The work was completed for Irish groups, who worked at home or abroad, as well as albums from abroad referencing Ireland or Irishness. The collection dates from the late 1950s to the present day, and covers a wide range of musical and non-musical genres.” Niall and Ciarán joined me for Episode 675 of my radio show Songs To Learn And Sing for a wide-ranging chat about printing in Dublin, the evolution of design, the Showbands, Country & Irish, the Dutch graphic designers who came to Ireland in the post-war era, Irish Punk, Indie releases in the 80s, Celtic design, designers Diana O'Donnell, Steve Averill and Jim Fitzpatrick, contemporary design and much more. We discussed the design of loads of albums that were featured in their exhibition – albums by Clannad, Thin Lizzy, Horslips, The Stars of Heaven, Microdisney, Gavin Friday, Donnacha Costello and loads of others. This interview was originally broadcast on Dublin City FM on 23 August 2017.
On this weeks 100th episode we are joined by Gavin Friday. Gavin, born and bred in Dublin is a singer, songwriter, composer, actor, painter and all round Irish legend, best known as a founding member The Virgin Prunes who were one of Ireland's most ambitious post-punk groups. Gavin left The Prunes in 1986 going on to record several solo albums and soundtracks. Gavin collaborated with Bono to write three tracks for the Jim Sheridan movie, In the Name of the Father, two of which were Bono-Friday vocal duets with Sinead O'Connor singing the third. He contributed the song "Angel" to one of the biggest selling soundtracks of all time - Romeo and Juliet as well as a full score for the films The Boxer, Angel Baby, In America and Get Rich or Die Tryin. Gavin still puts the same energy into his work that he did when he started the virgin prunes in 1977, whether recording his own albums or composing music. His work is always inspiring and thought provoking and we were delighted to get to chat to him. Let Christy Take It are proud to bring you Gavin Friday. Edited by Mark. We're in previously uncharted Broken Records territory this week, as Steve and Remfry take a deep dive into the 1994 debut album from Naomi Campbell. Yes, that's right, Streatham's very own supermodel released a (predominantly) R&B record, because it was the 90s and the 90s was a weird ole' time for the music industry. We take a look back at the inescapable celebrity culture that surrounded Campbell and her supermodel chums which allowed them to take part in a variety of extra-curricular activities above and beyond wearing clothes and looking pretty. As well as making this album, she's (ghost)written a book, released 25 fragrances for women via her eponymous perfume house and made light of her various assault convictions by wearing a t-shirt that reads "Naomi Hit Me...and I Loved It" ... how noble of you Naomi. But we're not here to drag all that up again. Instead, we talk about the relative merits of babywoman, the album that Campbell managed to rope in a surprising amount of talent for, including The Virgin Prunes founding member Gavin Friday, English musician and producer Tim Simenon aka Bomb the Bass, American hip hop and R&B double act P.M. Dawn and Killing Joke bassist Youth! In fact, there are many surprises surrounding this album, not least the reaction of one of our hosts to it. But where will it end up on our ever-expanding chart of Broken Records?

L'FREAQ is coming onto the scene with some new work. Imagine SWANS meetsMassive Attack with the Art Direction of Nick Cave and Gavin Friday, just to make it freakier. Bullied as a teenager she has moved on to own it, and fly her Freaq Flaghigh, celebrating the serious Freaq she has going on under thesurface, and she has no problem telling you that. Following up on her recent EP “Weird Awakenings” (the explanation in theinterview), she has released a new song “Make Me Move”, veryintense and takes you to places you might not want to go, but that's all her music actually. After listening to her music, you will findher soft gentle personality to be completely unlike the ideas you getfrom her music. A real GEM, hold on for a wild ride. Just don't go listen to herversion of “Into My Arms” By Nick Cave without preparing to cryyour eyes out. Twitter Youtube Facebook Instagram

Mr Pussy’s Cafe De Luxe was a cafe and restaurant dreamt up by Jim Sheridan, Gavin Friday, and Bono and hosted by old-school drag legend Mr Pussy. Opening in 1994, the place quickly established itself as the place to be seen in Dublin, and hosted a number of record launches and after parties. But, just as quickly as it arrived it disappeared, closing a year after it opened. I caught up with drag super star, singer and recording artist Veda to discuss her time working at the cafe and the adventures she got up to. Follow Veda on Instagram - www.instagram.com/vedalady
