Ben Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden were in their early twenties when they painted their faces for the album cover of their decade-defining album Oracular Spectacular in 2007. They were self-proclaimed psychonauts exploring the subconscious unknown though heroic doses of psychedelic drugs, looking to find what any twenty-year-old is looking for, the answers to life. And what did they find? The answer comes after a decade of reflection in the last song off their new album Loss of Life, which is a bit of a trip in itself.
Maybe you were reminded of the genius songwriting of US duo MGMT when their song ‘Time To Pretend' recently popped up on the Saltburn film soundtrack? Ever since their breakthrough in 2007, with songs like ‘Kids' and ‘Electric Feel', the duo of Andrew VanWyngarden and Ben Goldwasser have continued to release a stream of compelling new music. Greg Cochrane spoke to them from their homes in America on opposite coasts to wind back the clock on meeting them for the first time in 2007, and hear early stories of their surreal meetings with Sir Paul McCartney, Arctic Monkeys and Adele. Plus, MGMT discuss performing their debut album Oracular Spectacular live (hello Broadway?), the period during COVID-19 where their song ‘Little Dark Age' seemed to soundtrack every video on the internet and their future plans as a band. Mit dem Debütalbum «Oracular Spectacular» prägte das New Yorker Duo MGMT 2008 den Sound des darauffolgenden Jahrzehnts. 16 Jahre später fehlt diese Weitsicht: Auf ihrer neusten Platte «Loss Of Life» hört man viel 80er Vibes, 70er Folk Referenzen und 90er Britpop Momente.
Steven and Ian begin this week's episode with an impromptu Moviecast about the news that Sam Mendes is directing four separate biopics about each member of The Beatles. Steven has often said that he can't ever have too much Beatles content, but this might finally test that theory. The guys also try to think about music biopics that are actually good, and come up with 24 Hour Party People, Superstar: The Karen Carpenter Story and the immortal made-for-VH1 classic about Def Leppard (7:00).From there, they talk about the latest album from MGMT, Loss Of Life, as well as the band's career (15:30). Shockingly, Ian has never heard Oracular Spectacular in its entirety! They also discuss the buzziest band of early 2024, the British export The Last Dinner Party, and the lineage of heavily hyped English rock bands (29:30).In the mailbag, they are asked to give a yay-or-nay verdict on the Lemonheads (39:30) and whether band lineup changes have ever helped bands in the long run (46:00).In Recommendation Corner (52:00), Ian pays tribute to Complex.com and a reissue of a lost classic by Curling while Steven recommends the latest from the jammy folk-rock outfit Itasca.New episodes of Indiecast drop every Friday. Barry and Abigail discuss our next Jukebox submission, Oracular Spectacular by MGMT and sample Oggy, Passionfruit Mochi, and Peanut Brother from Great Notion Brewing in Portland, Oregon. This album was submitted to our Virtual Jukebox by Paul Zawacki [The Procession, previously discussed on Musique Marécageuse (The Procession & Swamp Head Brewery) and interviewed on A Dozen Updates (The Procession Reunion Special)]. Oggy is named after Ogopogo, a lake monster said to inhabit Okanagan Lake in British Columbia, Canada. Listen to Paul's previous Jukebox episode, Abigail Battles the Pink Goblets (The Flaming Lips). Read the jambands.com article about MGMT's performance on the Live on Letterman concert series, which introduced Paul to the band! There is a fantastic episode of Song Exploder focused on The Commander Thinks Aloud, which was written about the Space Shuttle Columbia. Barry and Abigail discuss God Shuffled His Feet by Crash Test Dummies and sample The Crowd Pleaser, Lowest Common Denominator, Mike's, St. Pete Parkour, and Sun Ryes from Toll Road Brewing Company in Ocoee, Florida. Many thanks to Duane Morin and David Strickland, co-owners and brewers at Toll Road Brewing, for sitting down with us to chat about the history and future of the brewery! Toll Road features two offerings, Choose Your Own Adventure (a hard seltzer) and Kayfabe (a Berliner Weisse) that can be customized with different flavors using beverage infusions! Barry recommended Superman's Song from Crash Test Dummies' first album, The Ghosts That Haunt Me. View the setlist of the performance that Barry saw in 1994 when Crash Test Dummies opened for Elvis Costello, and view this Variety review of the concert. Canities subita, also called Marie Antoinette syndrome or Thomas More syndrome, is an alleged condition of hair turning white overnight due to stress or trauma. This Los Angeles Times article from April 1994 discusses how the success of Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm as a single drove the success of the entire album. Crash Test Dummies reference David Byrne in When I Go Out with Artists. Listen to our review of Byrne's Uh-Oh, Byrned-Again (David Byrne and Lincoln & South Brewing). The Golden Dregs (benjamin woods) deja brillar su voz de barítono en "before we fell from grace", cautivador nuevo adelanto de American airlines.

Celeste is more things than I will be able to describe. She is an oracle, fortune teller, witch, and "affirmation empress"--indeed, affirmations spring from her like rapidly chanted poetic mantras chaneled from some complex divine source. But there is more! Her nom de plume is Janette Odell, and under that moniker, she and her husband Jerry have penned several erotic novels describing the mysterious Yoni egg and her adventures and practices in that domain. These books, entitled "Yoni Chronicles Vol. I and II" are available on Amazon or your favorite bookseller. As you might expect, much more information about Celeste is found at: https://readingsbyceleste.com/ on instagram at @readings_by_celeste or on facebook at https://www.facebook.com/ReadingsbyCelestetheOracle/

Gareth Reynolds joins The 500 with Josh Adam Meyers to dissect experimental indie band MGMT's breakout record. Youth, sexual exploration, the banality of modern life: these are all themes that have been explored in countless art forms; so much so that one might expect that MGMT's 2007 debut album Oracular Spectacular would have little to add to the conversation. But that expectation doesn't take into account how much that conversation might change when filtered through the brilliantly improvisational wit of Gareth Reynolds, who has made a career out of lampooning the equally minute and bizarre aspects of life through his writing on shows like Arrested Development and his own wildly successful podcast The Dollop. Locked in a room together with nothing but synth pop and psychedelic rock to sustain them, Gareth and Josh can barely contain themselves from laughing hysterically at the inconsistencies in the album's quality, the division of labor in the band, and the irony of a song about becoming famous being the ticket to stardom for two guys who never even wanted to form a band in the first place. Spoon was formed in 1993 by singer Britt Daniel and drummer Jim Eno. They've released eight albums, including their most recent record, They Want My Soul, which came out in August 2014. In this episode, Jim Eno breaks down the song Inside Out, explaining how it went from the original demo to the finished album version, including what other music influenced the recording. Plus, we'll hear from their co-producer, Dave Fridmann, whose other credits include The Flaming Lips album The Soft Bulletin, and Oracular Spectacular by MGMT.
