The next instalment of our Mixtape series comes by Johanna Sulkunen, a Finnish experimental vocalist, composer & improviser based in Copenhagen. A mix of minimalistic sounds combined with vocal compositions to welcome the spring season.
For Johanna, the symbiosis of vocals and electronics have been at the centre of her career. A frequent collaborator with iconic jazz & improv musicians such as Tomasz Stanko, Axel Dörner, Koichi Makigami and originally labelled as an exciting voice on the alternative jazz scene, Sulkunen has expanded her range from jazz and alternative pop to free improvisation, electronic music and avant-garde.  Only a few months ago, Johanna release Terra, a collection of tracks where the artist invokes imaginary landscapes with her voice, electronics and a stellar ensemble. Terra also represents the second part of her trilogy with the solo project Sonority, in Terra Finnish experimental vocalist creates a global vision while being trapped in Copenhagen, and invites the listener to question our modern life and its often destructive relation to nature.

On Terra, she continues the work with Zen Buddhism and the koan as in her first release with her solo project, as well as her own lyrics, but she expands her musical space considerably and explores the transformation of the vocal language into instruments such as strings, horns and drums, letting the qualities of texts lead to the result. For this mixtape, she's selected a mixture of very minimalistic sound compositions, some vocal works, and some more ‘embracing' with strings and electronics: I think it intrigues you to listen to the details and allows you to let go of thinking and drift along with sound. I've been preparing the mix while sitting on a tour bus (or more of a tiny, totally packed car) and taking my own time between the concerts sitting alone with my headphones. Tracklist: 1. We had the pleasure of interviewing Jim Fairchild and Jacob Snider of Small Isles over Zoom video! The new instrumental project of guitarist Jim Fairchild (Grandaddy / Modest Mouse / All Smiles) and songwriter/composer Jacob Snider (named Best New Artist by NPR-affiliate WXPN-Philadelphia), Small Isles inhabits a rare hypnotic twilight between motion picture music and incandescent cosmic folk. At once a love letter to film soundtracks and a meditative balm for our troubled times, ‘The Valley, The Mountains, The Sea' was recorded by Fairchild on a bare-bones mobile rig while on tour with Modest Mouse, in the cracks of time between soundchecks and performances, from city to city, in darkened hotel rooms and over-lit backstage dressing rooms, giving the album a sense of intimacy, of stolen time and weary after-show solitude.  Playfully conceived as an imaginary score to an imaginary film in the spirit of the 90s sleeper classic ‘The Ice Storm', the album is cinematic in a homespun way, at times recalling the innovative film music of Hildur Gudnadottir and Oneohtrix Point Never telescoped through a back porch Sigur Ros or the delicate cobwebs of barely-there slowcore Americana. A linchpin track off the album, ‘Life At One' is imprinted by Snider's chorale-like humming and an emotionally riveting video by animator Riley Thompson. In the words of Fairchild, “It's one of the first songs that we worked on together and became the spiritual center for the album. I wrote the central musical themes and once Jacob's voice entered the picture, providing the autumnal glow, the song became what it was supposed to, and pointed the way to so much more music.” About the beautifully evocative video, Fairchild had this to say, “I had this vague concept of a person facing down their mortality and then finding redemption and purpose. Where Riley took the song was beyond what I'd hoped for. It is heartbreaking in the best possible way, without becoming didactic. He is also making a chopped and screwed version of the video which will serve as a chaptered visual accompaniment for the whole album. Riley's work brought the whole album to life in a way I'd hoped for but couldn't have imagined.” Small Isles will be playing select shows later in 2021.We want to hear from you! Music For Long Winter Nights This is my 2-hour contribution to the (7-hour) ambient music night on Concertzender Nederland radio, which was broadcast in the December 19-20 night. When compiling this set, I tried to keep in mind that this was intended to be listened to in the deepest and darkest of the night. But it is not a 'sleep set', due to the variety of moods and atmospheres. It's a celebration of the dark of night that can be enjoyed at any time - every time you're in the mood for a moment (or 2 hours) of unhurried immersiveness.

Well known to fans of this podcast - on which she has featured by proxy many, many times - Hildur has gained broader and much deserved recognition for her work on Joker - Todd Phillips's origin story about the eponymous super-villain that has proved hugely popular among movie fans and critics alike. If you haven't seen it yet, Joaquin Phoenix's performance is astonishing, as is Hildur's suitably disturbing score. Then we have Dolly Wells, a much-loved British comedy actor who has just made her directorial debut with Good Posture. She and I have more of a chat about her career in television and film than the usual focus on music, but she's an utter delight, so we really wanted to share it anyway.

The Memory Palace is a proud member of Radiotopia. Music White Light by Chihei Hatekeyama Between the Trees by Akira Kosemura Clockwork Toccatta, Op. 68 from Amsterdam Loeki Stardust Quartet. End of Summer Part 3 by Hildur Gudnadottir and Robert Aiki Aubrey Lowe A Gathering to Lead Me When You're Gone by Brian McBride Notes While the most comprehensive and useful thing I read for this piece was The Year Without a Summer: 1816 and the Volcano that Darkened the World and Changed history by William and Nicholas Klingaman, my favorite thing was this video of a news report on the work of Vermont historian, Howard Coffin.

In this series, we revisit The Lake's line of concerts in Jazzhouse Copenhagen spring 2015. Here Icelandic cellist Hildur Guðnadóttir talks about music and movement and the string instrument that was designed especially for her, so she can wear it on her shoulders, becoming the body of the instrument. This concert was part of Todaysart, Den Haag, Netherlands on 27.09.09. Also appearing as part of the Touch events were Hildur Gudnadottir, Philip Jeck, Jana Winderen and The Eternal Chord. It was recorded straight from the mixing desk to an Ares Pll Nagra digital recorder. Born in Tromso (Norway), Geir Jenssen is better known as Biosphere, a key figure in contemporary Norwegian music. In 1992, Jenssen shot to fame with his Biosphere-debut album "Microgravity", becoming one of the pioneering ambient artists from the 90's. He was one of the first to come up with the mix of soundscapes, voice samples and atmospheric noise with trancey melodies and solid beats. Biosphere gave an intimate performance in the Lutherse Kerk, a very small church.
