In this episode, CJ Miller explores key insights from Michèle Cassou's book Point Zero: Creativity Without Limits. He discusses her powerful approach to overcoming creative blocks by asking the right question—a question rooted in the specific fear or resistance at hand. For example: “What would happen if I didn't care whether this painting sold or not?”CJ shares a personal story about working on a new circular painting. Feeling stuck in one section, he realized his block stemmed from a fear of losing something he found interesting. When he asked himself, “What would happen if I didn't care if I lost this shape?” the resistance lifted, and creative flow returned. He also reflects on Cassou's concept of “Point Zero,” her version of what he calls “being in the Gap.” She identifies three inner dragons that often block creativity: the Dragon of Product, the Dragon of Meaning, and the Dragon of Control. CJ explains these dragons and how they manifest in both art-making and everyday life.As he prepares for a break in July, CJ invites listeners to embrace their own pause—and be willing to spend some time in the Gap this summer.Want to learn more about CJ Miller? The very next year, Stephen Evans & the True Grits released their first LP "Something to Bleed". Inspired to release more music, they followed two years later with their EP "Under the Bridge." Both records have received local and regional praise for their passion and creativity. Stephen's strong melodic songwriting style is a blend of vivid imagery, darkness, and hopeful optimism. There's no denying the feeling that shines through with his evocative vocals and lyrics. Songs like ‘Ghost Among the Trees', 'The Garden', 'Cherokee Hills', 'Shining Star', and '1000 Roses' are beacons of his folk rock song craft. With radio play on Western North Carolina radio stations, as well as shows around the region, Stephen Evans & the True Grits are becoming a local favorite. "Buzz of Bees" is their latest album, released in December of 2022, of folk rock with some songs dipping their toes into other styles like Americana, Latin Folk, and Vaudeville. Singles from the LP, ‘Ghost Among the Trees', ‘Winning the Day', and ‘Estefania', are already receiving radio play on local stations as well as national online radio and music podcasts. Look for Stephen Evans & the True Grits playing fun live shows all around the area to support this beautiful album. Emerging Manchester indie up and comer Jack Hyphen returns with the vibrant, breezy new single ‘Not Medicinal' (June 28th). Having made a name for himself as one to watch with live shows in and around Manchester, Jack Hyphen continues to showcase the intricate songwriting and radiant musicianship which has seen him build a fanbase. Emerging from the breakup of Herefordshire Indie/Rock band Point Zero, where he served as the frontman, Jack returned with acoustic singles that showcased his vocal and lyrical prowess. His evolution into a 4-piece alternative pop/rock outfit in mid-2019 brought a punchy, atmospheric edge to his music. The new single ‘Not Medicinal' continues this approach with intricate interweaving guitar lines, smothered in atmospheric modulation and reverb which glides over the punching drums and driving bass. Topped with Jack's emotive, understated vocal delivery, the track blends its energetic undercurrent with an ethereal edge to create a unique, accessible yet thoughtful and delicate soundscape. Having already gained widespread press support and radio play from the likes of Amazing Radio and XS Manchester, Jack has opened for a number of breakout bands including Crystal Tides, Jeremiah Ferrari, and James Walsh (Starsailor), even gaining acclaim from BBC Radio 6 Music's Chris Hawkins for the quality of his live performance. Jack continues to grow, showcasing some of his finest work yet on the new single ‘Not Medicinal'.

A captivating conversation with theater director and playwright Laila Soliman about theater, cultural discourse and decolonization across the Arab world. Using three of her major works – Zigzag, La Grande Maison and her first opera Woman at Point Zero – as reference, we discuss western-centric art education, dismantle the concept of “alternative narratives”, and collective memory. We think about theater as a medium, what it takes to bring about a cultural “golden age”, and where and how is the best place to pass on knowledge.Laila Soliman is an independent Egyptian theater director and playwright who lives and works in Cairo. Born in Cairo, she gained a degree in theater and Arabic literature from the American University in Cairo and a MA at Dasarts in Amsterdam. Her performances have been shown across the Arab world, India, South Africa and Europe. Her first opera production – Woman at Point 0 – based on Nawal el Saadawi's novel by the same name premiered in 2022. THIS SERIES IS PART OF THE AFIKRA PODCAST NETWORKThe afikra Podcast is our flagship series featuring experts from academia, art, media and beyond who are helping document and/or shape the histories and cultures of the Arab world through their work. This week, Niko and Tatiana read Woman at Point Zero by Egyptian feminist author and doctor Nawal El Saadawi, the "Simone de Beauvoir of the Arab world". Based on a true story, Woman at Point Zero recounts the life of Firdaus, a young prostitute on death row, allowing her to reclaim the meaning of her life and depict the lot of Egyptian women. Niko and Tatiana discuss consciousness, sex work, and the gaze of eyes.
Battlefield Acupuncture (BFA) is rapidly gaining recognition for its effectiveness in alleviating acute and chronic pain, as well as anxiety. When we heard Angel Jaap, CRNA speak about this at the AANA Spring Symposium, we wanted to bring her on to learn more about this alternative therapy. You'll understand why she wants more nurses to learn this protocol after you hear some of the applications and success stories she shares today. For those that aren't familiar with BFA, patients undergo insertion of five auricular semi-permanent (ASP) needles to the following traditional ear acupuncture points bilaterally: Cingulate Gyrus, Thalamus, Omega 2, Point Zero and Shenmen. Angel learned about this over the past few years and has instituted a Pilot program through Whole Health within VISN 4 which allows RNs to perform BFA for veterans thereby increasing veterans access to this safe, effective pain management therapy. You'll learn more about that and have a much better understanding of BFA after listening to our conversation during our trip to Hershey, Pennsylvania. Here are some of the things you'll learn on this show: How therapeutic touch works and why it makes you feel the way it does. How BFA was developed and why the VA began incorporating this into patient care. What does a day at work look like for Angel? Angel shares a wonderful success story about treating a veteran and PTSD. The smaller needles used in BFA have been effective for people scared of needles. Today I‘m excited to be speaking with Ahmed Naji, a writer who spent two years in prison in Egypt for writing what the authorities judged to be objectionable material. But while Ahmed Naji was in prison, he discovered literature and through that, himself. It's an amazing story of a person who finds magic and hope in the unlikely environs of the library of a stereotypical prison—a pestilential and dank hovel, one biscuit short of hell. But before I talk to him, I thought it might be useful to get some context going here, so, a little bit, about Egyptian literature first. Modern Egyptian literature began to flourish in the early 20th century, or right up to say the 1940s, as writers started to break away from traditional Arabic literary forms such as classical Arabic poetry, with specific meters and rhyming schemes. It was during that time that author Taha Hussein, often called the "Dean of Arabic Literature," challenged classical literary norms, when he introduced a more accessible style of prose. The next decade saw the birth of a cultural renaissance with the overthrow of the monarchy in 1952 and the beginning of the republic. That's about when Naguib Mahfouz happened. He went on to win the Nobel in 1988 and brought world attention to Egyptian literature. As with all cultural forms, one decade tends to build on the previous and the successive decades have seen social realism, pioneering books, like "Woman at Point Zero", about the struggles of women in Egyptian society, and writers explained the challenges of contemporary life. There was the growth of female and feminist voices and of course the influences from the Arab Spring. Importantly, there has been a growth in contribution to literature from the Egyptian diaspora.I found Ahmed Naji's writing online and I was fascinated by his story and his work and we tracked him down to his new home in the United States. Ahmed's latest book Rotten Evidence is a story about his time in prison, about how he discovered literature and found the writer in himself and the reality of protest. These lines capture the essence of the protest against censorship and being jailed for alleged obscenity."James Joyce, who swore to express himself with the greatest degree of freedom possible—and never to serve home, fatherland, or church—said a writer had three weapons: silence, exile, and cunning. Well, Joyce, they put me in prison, and all I had left was laughter and rage."Such is the captivating prose of my guest today. Ahmed Naji joins me from his home in Las Vegas for this delightful conversation.ABOUT AHMED NAJIAhmed Naji is a writer, journalist, documentary filmmaker... and criminal. His novel Using Life made him the only writer in Egyptian history to have been sent to prison for offending public morality. Naji has won several prizes including a Dubai Press Club Award and a PEN/Barbey Freedom to Write Award. He is currently a fellow at the Beverly Rogers, Carol C. Harter Black Mountain Institute. They quote their listennotes stats (even when they know they are bogus, see video 1 and video 2) and promote affiliate products - not because they are good - but because they have the highest commission. I'm not them. Today I reveal the truth - even if it is not what you want to hear. So The Plan is Start a Podcast and Get Advertisers? Less than 10% of podcasters get the number of downloads per episode after 30 days to get a host ready from a "big sponsor." source Programmatic ads have a CPM that may be around $12 CPM (cost per thousand downloads) source The median number of podcasters is around 150 (per libsyn)and the average is around 1500. The median on Buzzsprout is 30. The aver CPM for Advertisecast is $24ish and they require 10,000 downloads per episode. source Please note, I'm not saying smaller shows with 1000 downloads an episode can't get a sponsor. With podcasting, it always "Depends" on your topic. If you DO have a hyper niche or hyper-local podcast you can charge more than the rates above. Bruce Chamoff from the NYC Podcast Network I first ran into Bruce when he invited me to be a speaker at his Podknow 2023 Online Event. I wanted to talk to Bruce because I don't see eye to eye on some of the things he does, and I wanted to no more. One was having a network where the topics weren't related. Brice started the NYC Podcast Network back in 2005 (it was the Long Island Podcast Network back then). He has slowly broadened the scope and plans on rebranding it to the Global Podcast Network. Bruce is monetizing by having podcaster pay to be promoted on his site, which gets 20-25 thousand unique visitors a month. That would put him in the top 20% (Source). You can join for free or pay a small monthly fee to be featured on the site. Bruce monitors all the activity on the website so you can evaluate your traffic from the site and decide if it's worth the fee, or just stay with a free plan (or leave - I'm somewhat worried about having another site competing with YOUR website) Certain plans on the site allow you to link to our show on popular podcast platforms, as well as monetization links, and link to your website (which you can do on your own site for free). Bruce likens it to a social media site based around podcasting. What makes his site different is his level of categorization. You can sign up for free, try it, and check your stats to see if this works for you. My "Thanks Dave" Engagement Experiment For three weeks, I swapped out my typical School of Podcasting Advertisement and askws people if they felt I had given value over the years (and they had never joined the School of Podcasting) if they would give some of that value back by going to www.schoolofpodcasting.com/thanks Six people said "Thanks" and gave some value back (Ranging from $5-$25). Hustle. Grind. Boss up. Do more. Love them or hate them, these words are embedded into the ways we think about work and entrepreneurship. But as we've seen with the enormous growth of the r/anti-work subreddit and the panic about quiet quitting, more people than ever are thinking about different ways to go about building their lives, careers, and businesses. As we close out the Self-Help, LLC series, I wanted to address where our productivity hang-ups come from, who our productivity really benefits, and how we might go about doing things differently. This episode is in 2 parts. The first half or so is an introduction to how employers (including self-employers) profit from unpaid work and why the productivity-wage gap has become so immense. The second half of the episode is my conversation with Jadah Sellner, about the vision for business she lays out in her new book, She Builds.Footnotes: Find out more about Jadah Sellner and her new book, She Builds. “TikTok ‘5-to-9' Trend Shows Quiet Quitting Hasn't Killed Hustle Culture” on Bloomberg Dolly Parton rewrites her working woman's anthem for SquareSpace THE ULTIMATE MORNING ROUTINE (parody) Revolution at Point Zero, essays by Silvia Federici Data on the productivity-wage gap (Economic Policy Institute) Self-Help, INC by Micki McGee Debt: The First 5,000 Years by David Graeber Essay versions of each episode of the podcast come out on Thursdays at explorewhatworks.com and in my newsletter. As you heard last episode, from February 1982 SWAPO activity had increased in the normally quiet western sector of Angola north of Kaokaland. Remember the Red Cross flight which had been tracked by a SWAPO unit in that area at a place they called Point Zero. It was decided that this unit had to be confronted as quickly as possible as it threatened to bring the war to an area that had been virtually untouched by the mines and violence of Ovamboland. Two days later, the SADF comops unit was monitoring a SWAPO unit which had headquarters close to Cahama and the unit was ordered to meet their chief of staff from Lubango at Iona on 22nd February. Intelligence sources inside Angola said PLANs defence secretary, Peter Nanyemba, was taking a personal interest in Point Zero. That confirmed suspicions about how important SWAPO thought that this base was. Sector 10 HQ was worried about these new moves by SWAPO, it appeared to be establishing itself in Kaokaland and Damaraland. But where was Point Zero? It was time to deploy a ten-man team from 5 Reconnaisance Regiment to investigate the situation. Eventually after a number of contacts, they captured 6 POWs who told them that there were about 200 SWAPO at a base ten kilometers south of Iona in a place called the Cambena Valley. It was just across the border, west of Ruacana, north of the heart of Kaokoland. There was no time to waste. The soldiers at the base must have been aware already that the SADF had been active nearby so things had to move fast. This would turn into Operation Super

Ep 180 - Kirsten Chalmers from Point Zero Cellars Point Zero Cellars philosophy is simple – offer a healthier adult beverage to individuals seeking a more mindful approach to drinking, and companies who see the value in offering these alternatives to their customers. They focus on finding the best tasting alcohol-free beverages available and adding them to a predominantly alcohol heavy beverage industry. So I felt very lucky to chat with the founder of Point Zero Cellars Kirsten Chalmers on this week's episode. In this podcast we discuss: -Where did the idea for Point Zero come from. -Why did Kirsten decide to focus on premium and overseas brands first. -How her experience in psychology played a role in the brand. -How Low-alc or no-alc drinks are now very much a normal part of the market rather than just a trend, and how big does she believe the industry will get. The Egyptian feminist writer and doctor Nawal El Saadawi always spoke her mind. Her early books were explosive testimonials, based on her medical practice and personal experience, about sexual double standards and the abuses women faced because of them. She went on to write many more books, including novels, plays and several memoirs. Over the course of her life she was jailed, censored, fired, admired, and attacked by Islamists as an unbeliever. She is still one of the best-known and most translated Arab women writers. Some of the books discussed in this episode include: The Hidden Face of Eve, The Fall of the Imam, Memoirs from the Women's Prison, Woman at Point Zero, Daughter of Isis and Walking Through Fire. The Radical Books Collective and the Adabiyat Book Club are holding an online master class on El Saadawy's famous novel Woman At Point Zero on November 20, with academic and translator Samah Selim. Ursula wrote about El Saadawy recently for The New York Review of Books.
