After murdering 12 people at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Ian David Long turned his gun on himself and took his own life. With the killer dead and beyond the reach of earthly justice, one might imagine there would be no role for an investigative agency like the FBI to play in the case. But there was. This episode of the Murder Sheet focuses on a little known division of the FBI which concentrates on helping those left behind after a tragedy, victims who need more from the justice system than what can be delivered in a courtroom. “The war inside is totally different from the one we were trained to win.”Sarah Lee Imagine finding yourself in a place so painful, dark and hopeless that suicide feels like the only option.Welcome to post traumatic stress disorder.Few things are more important than mental health. Nonetheless, the World Health Organization estimates that about 300 million people worldwide suffer from depression. In the United States, anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness, affecting 18% of the population — 7.7 million of whom are afflicted by PTSD.Sarah Lee is one such individual.A former Army Sergeant and Operation Iraqi Freedom II Combat Veteran, Sarah experienced more than her fair share of trauma during her 2004 deployment. After 8-years of service, she retires to civilian life and begins to struggle mightily with re-acclimating to normalcy. Numb, she begins to withdraw from friends and family. Her only companion becomes chronic neck and knee pain. And her only solace the food she binges to salve her emotional wounds. 100 pounds heavier, she is then diagnosed with a potentially life-threatening, grapefruit-sized ovarian cyst.By April 2017, Sarah descends into a depression so bleak, she very nearly takes her own life.Today she tells her story — an inspiring tale of survival and service that begins with a bikeHowever, countless who suffer from PTSD never find their way out. In fact, 22 veterans take their own lives every single day.The very day I hosted this podcast was no exception. On November 7, 2018, just miles from my house, 28-year old combat veteran Ian David Long was planning an outlet for the dark thoughts he couldn't shake. And just hours after Sarah shared her solution with me, Long succumbed to his pain. Pulling out a .45 caliber semi-automatic pistol with a laser sight, he opened fire on a crowd of 20-somethings gathered at the Borderline Grill in Thousand Oaks, killing twelve before fatally shooting himself. The confluence of these two events — and the disparity in their respective outcomes — perfectly underscores the severity of PTSD, our mental health epidemic at large, and the dire need for better diagnostics and more innovative treatment solutions for the untold millions who suffer. So let's talk about it.This is a story about courage. It’s about healing. And it’s about redemption.I'll let Sarah tell the rest.To view our conversation on YouTube, visit bit.ly/sarahlee424. The British singer, once-One Direction member, Zayn Malik, was the celebrity many Muslims especially Pakistani ones, liked to claim as their own because he had a father who was a Pakistani Muslim and his family appears to be Muslim. In an interview to British Vogue, Zayn was asked if he would call himself a Muslim. His reply was, "No, I wouldn't". Some of his fans are canceling him. 2. Pastor Jean Jacob Jeudy, a 48-year-old Texas pastor of the church Walk By Faith International Missionary, was arrested and charged with sexually assaulting a child. He blamed Satan for the charges. He said they are being made through the devil. He was booked Thursday into the El Paso County Jail on a bond totaling $30,000 and was released on bail later that day. 3. Kevin Stitt, an anti-vaxxer and a Republican businessman, got elected as Oklahoma's 28th governor. He beat Democrat Drew Edmondson by 12 points despite never having run for elected office before. He gives all the credit to God. 4. Before the rampage at a bar in Thousand Oaks, California, the mass shooter apparently posted about the uselessness of "hopes and prayers" on Facebook. Ian David Long, a 28-year-old former Marine who served Afghanistan, shot people at the Borderline Bar & Grill Wednesday night. This was his post on facebook: “I hope people call me insane… (laughing emojis).. wouldn’t that just be a big ball of irony? Yeah.. I’m insane, but the only thing you people do after these shootings is ‘hopes and prayers’.. or ‘keep you in my thoughts’… every time… and wonder why these keep happening…” His motives are still unknown. On the other news, a mother of the mass shooting victim said that she does not want prayers, she wants gun control. Her son, Telemachus Orfanos was a survivor of another mass shooting in Las Vegas. The mother's message was: “I hope to God no one sends me anymore prayers. I want gun control. No more guns!” – mother of shooting victim Telemachus Orfanos. She says he survived the #LasVegasShooting but did not survive the #ThousandOaksMassacre. 5. The Parkway Playhouse came to Mitchell High School in Bakersville to perform the Shakespeare play on Thursday. A group of parents and pastors were so offended about the presentation that they formed a prayer circle for the students. 6. In the 1990s, Rachelle “Shelley” Shannon shot and injured abortion provider Dr. George Tiller who was later assassinated. Rachelle also committed multiple acts of firebombing and acid attacks against abortion clinics. She was sentenced to more than two decades in prison but now she is free. 7. Friday morning President Donald Trump signed a presidential proclamation that will bar migrants who cross into the US illegally through the southern border from seeking asylum. This would ban migrants from applying for asylum outside of official ports of entry. The American Civil Liberties Union has already called the rule "illegal," and legal challenges are expected to follow. 8. This week the Trump administration issued final regulations that give "conscience protections" for employers that have "religious or moral objections" to providing employees birth control. Under the new rules, businesses, nonprofits, and religious groups have much more flexibility to withhold any form of contraception from their workers, a decision that would primarily affect women. 9. A video showing the brutal killing of a young Syrian girl by her own brother has been released online. She was killed to "bring back the honour" of her family. The video shows a young man, Bashar Bseis, holding a Kalashnikov rifle in hand, pointing at a young girl wearing a scarf and couching on the floor. "Make sure we can see both your faces," a voice orders him. His friend told him, "Go ahead, Bashar - cleanse your honour." Bashar then proceeds to shoot multiple bullets into his sister and watches her die. This was reportedly live streamed on Facebook. The girl had been killed after indiscreet pictures of her were posted on the social media site. Bashar is a member of the Free Syrian Army, with its own police and courts and might never be held to account. 10. In the United States, the fastest-growing religious affiliation is "no affiliation," and it is leading to a major crisis for religious leaders. The report cited a Pew Research poll which found that 36% of younger millennials identify as either atheist, agnostic, or "nothing in particular." The report found that the vast information available through the internet is leading many away from churches, and toward their own personal journeys of spiritual discovery.
I revisit "The Hate Project: Episode 18" broadcast on MLK Day January 21st, 2013. I pitch a business idea for booths that allow people to pay to say racist words in private. African-American sports radio host NajRadio offers sympathetic perspective on white men who are left behind, and feel they have no access to the white privilege often attributed to them, but we also talk about the powerful people who take advantage of them. Resident Klansman Dragon 1488 calls in, offers a very reasonable explanation on why regular citizens should not be allowed to own assault rifles, surprising given his ideology and membership of a hate group. I offer commentary at the very beginning reflecting on these conversations with discussion on recent events such as the shooting in Thousand Oaks, CA and the shooting of Jemel Roberson in Chicago. Tragedy again strikes the country as another mass killing has occurred. 28 year old Marine veteran Ian David Long entered the Borderline Bar and Grill in Thousand Oaks California during a College Country night and killed 12 people before turning the gun on himself. Long's motives remain unclear but neighbors say he was known to suffer from PTSD. Kris Ankarlo, reporter for one of our iHeart radio stations in Los Angeles, was on the scene and spoke to us about how the night unfolded. Next, my producer Miranda joins us for more on the background of the shooter. He was in the Marines from 2008 to 2013 and was honorably discharged, although he was not without his problems getting caught shoplifting. Long used a Glock 21 .45 caliber handgun he bought legally but used an extended magazine which is illegal in California. Thousand Oaks, the city where the shooting occurred, was declared the third safest city in the US before this. Finally, we can't tell this story completely without telling the story of the victims. Twelve people were killed and 22 others were injured. Among the dead was Ventura County Sheriff's Sgt. Ron Helus. He is being praised as a hero after being one of the first on the scene and going in to the Borderline Bar and Grill to engage the shooter. He was shot multiple times and died later. We will tell you about him and some of the other victims. Learn more about your ad-choices at https://www.iheartpodcastnetwork.com

The man who killed 12 people in a southern California bar is identified as a former U.S. marine who deputies previously suspected was suffering from post-traumatic stress syndrome when they visited his home in April. Ventura County Sheriff Geof Dean says Ian David Long, 28, stormed into the Borderline Bar and Grille in Thousand Oaks with a Glock pistol and smoke grenades. He fatally wounded 11 people inside the club and a Ventura County sheriff's sergeant who rushed in to stop the attack. Nancy Grace looks at the mass attack with Los Angeles defense lawyer Troy Slaten, forensics expert Karen Smith, psychologist Caryn Stark, former federal prosecutor Francey Hakes, crime scene investigator Sheryl McCollum, and reporter Alan Duke.

Today on Sojourner Truth: Yet another mass shooting in the United States - this time, it occured not too far from Pacifica Radio's KPFK studios, in Thousand Oaks, California, at the Borderline Bar and Grill. This happened just last night, Wednesday, November 7. Media are reporting that 12 are dead. The shooter, Ian David Long, is dead. At least one of the people killed, Sgt. Ron Helus, was a first responder. Yesterday, Donald Trump fired Attorney General Jefferson Sessions amid Trump's concerns about his loyalty. You may recall that Trump has been very upset with Sessions for recusing himself from the Russia investigation. This move is seen by many as a way to undermine and undercut the Mueller investigation. So again, Trump interfering with that investigation and raising all kinds of questions related to ethics. The man he has named to temporarily replace Sessions, Matthew Whitaker, has been critical of the Mueller investigation. With all of that in mind, protests are being planned across the United States. It is predicted that 700-900 protests will happen, a lot of them at 5 p.m. today. Additionally, just yesterday, the Trump administration took on CNN journalist Jim Acosta and two Black women whom he derided in a White House press conference. That ended with Acosta's press pass to the White House being revoked. The journalists Trump has been after are journalists of color: Jim Acosta, who is Latino, and two Black women journalists. We speak with cultural critic and journalist Dr. Henry Giroux to discuss all of this. Also today, we return to the Saudi-led, U.S.-supported war in Yemen, which has left tens of thousands dead and is now the world's worst humanitarian crisis. Our guest is Dr. Shireen Al-Adeimi. And, for our weekly Earth Watch, we're joined by the co-director of Biofuel Watch, Rachel Smolker, to discuss the harms of biofuel and possible solutions.
