James Comey has just come out with his latest novel FDR Drive. This legal thriller once again follows federal prosecutor Nora Carleton as she contends with a wave of violence tied to an extremist podcaster. We had the opportunity to speak with James Comey about the new book, the shades of gray between free speech and incitation, and his own memories of dealing with institutional rivalries, reluctant jurors, and high-profile cases as a prosecutor. J. Edgar Hoover is one of the most polarizing figures in U.S. history. And the seeds he planted as the decades long founding director of the FBI continue to shape much of today's conservative political landscape. Kash Patel, who now leads the FBI, has openly vowed to find ways to punish Trump's political enemies. While that's appalling, it's not the first time an FBI director has used abused institutional power. There's a lot of historical precedent that we can compare and contrast with the current moment. Beverly Gage is a historian at Yale University and the Pulitzer Prize-winning author of “G-Man: J. Edgar Hoover and the Making of the American Century.” She joins WITHpod to discuss Hoover's influence, the politicization of the FBI, the abuse of its power, the FBI in Trump 2.0 and more.

(WATCH THIS EPISODE ON YOUTUBE) The FBI threatens to put innocent people on the No Fly List unless they agree to become unpaid FBI informants spying on their (also innocent) communities. Why? Because the FBI pretty much guarantees that random, erroneous, overinclusive, islamophobic nominations to the No Fly List will be approved, and since the process is cloaked in secrecy, there wasn't a clear way to stop them. Until now. Fikre v. FBI (2013) and Tanzin v. Tanvir (2020) are only two of many cases challenging the No Fly List's erroneous overinclusion and the FBI's islamophobia. In 1908, the United States did something unprecedented in its history: It created a general-purpose investigative police branch for the Department of Justice. The federal government had enforcement organizations before, but they had very narrow missions. From its humble beginnings, the FBI radically changed over the next several decades and became one of the most powerful federal agencies. We got to speak with former FBI director James Comey last year just as his first novel — Central Park West — was released. It introduced readers to federal prosecutor Nora Carleton, who was working to convict organized crime figures in New York. The book was a terrific read; even though it was a fictional work, Comey packed it full of real world details that could only come from someone who had himself actually prosecuted mobsters. A year later, Comey — and Nora — are back. In his new book, Westport, Nora finds herself in some new situations. Not only is she now working in corporate law but she is also suspected of the murder of a colleague. In this conversation, we speak with James Comey about the new book, white collar crimes, corporate law, and the challenge of finding people who will tell you when you suck.Support The Murder Sheet by buying a t-shirt here: https://www.murdersheetshop.com/Send tips to murdersheet@gmail.com.The Murder Sheet is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

The Osage Reign of Terror - dramatized recently in the 2023 award winning Martin Scorsese film, Killers of the Flower Moon based on the 2017 book of the same name - has been described as an epidemic of murders and mysterious deaths among the people of the Osage Nation. This is a wild story of a preposterous amount of corruption, conspiracy, and cold-blooded killing. Most experts state that at least sixty murders - and quite possibly HUNDREDS - were committed between 1918 and 1931, with the majority of murders taking place between 1921 and 1926 in just one rural county in Oklahoma. This is a story of a Texas oil tycoon, a congressman from Idaho, and a financial commodities broker in Oklahoma City. It's a story of blackmail, yes. But it's also a story of political corruption and ethics uncovered by that blackmail. There's a lot going on here, and pretty much everyone's guilty.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
On February 1st 2021, the Tatmadaw, or Myanmar military began a coup d'etat against the democratically-elected government, which was led by the National League for Democracy (or NLD) just before elected officials from the November 2020 elections could be sworn in. Since then, Myanmar has been largely controlled by a military junta, who continue to struggle against multiple ethnically-aligned armies dispersed throughout the country. Some countries in the region have refused to recognize the junta, but the People's Republic of China called the coup simply a “major cabinet reshuffle” and accelerated their military trade with the junta while decrying Western sanctions on the country as escalatory measures, even going so far as to veto a security council resolution condemning the coup alongside Russia. China's approach to relations with Myanmar since the coup have been evolving swiftly, especially since the recent Operation 1027, a large offensive staged by the ethnic armed forces coalition known as the Three Brotherhood Alliance on October 27th 2023. The losses by the junta during the operation revealed their control of the country to be more tenuous than Beijing might have expected and exemplify the complex factors going into China's decision-making approach to the conflict. For this episode, host Bonnie Glaser is joined by Jason Tower, the country director for the Burma program at the United States Institute for Peace. Tower has over 20 years of experience working in conflict and security issues in China and Southeast Asia, including analysis on cross-border investments, conflict dynamics, and organized crime in the region. He worked previously in Beijing and is a former Fulbright research student and Harvard-Yenching fellow. The Los Angeles Dodgers are a popular, well-known, and for the most part, good baseball team and organization. They play baseball, or at least they should, that and that alone. Their objective, their mission, is sports, clean, honest, hardworking sports, with the objective of winning the World Series. They are not qualified and should not be involved in politics, cultural or social issues and ideas, and most importantly, religion. They have no business or expertise to take positions on any religious matters or social-cultural matters and issues as well. PLAY BASEBALL AND DO IT WITH ALL YOUR MIGHT!But then comes so-called PRIDE MONTH. Supposedly, Americans-We The People are supposed to honor and embrace the LGBTQIA movement. Whether or not we believe in gay homosexuality and the lifestyle which accompanies that movement, which in so many ways is anti-Christian, and even more broadly anti-religion. Somehow, and for whatever reason, and whoever made these decisions, the top brass of the LA Dodgers, that major league baseball organization, decided to honor the Pride movement by having a night and a baseball game in their honor and in celebration of PRIDE MONTH.Shockingly, the LA Dodgers decided to “celebrate” pride month by honoring the:SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE.These so-called SISTERS are nothing more than men who dress up in sexually explicit and rainbow-colored nun clothing to mock Catholics. These men, posing as women, perform shocking stunts designed to be as offensive as possible. They include a CONDOM SAVIOR MASS and believe this or not, pole dancing on a crucifix, perhaps the height of blasphemous mockery of Christianity and the Catholic church, and presenting DRAG QUEENS posing as nuns. Can you believe that? What an entity. Sounds to me like straight from the devil. What do you think?Again, shockingly, the LA Dodgers gave this anti-Catholic bigoted group center stage and honored them as representatives of the Pride movement with utter disregard for Catholicism, Catholics in general, and in fact all Christians who believe in the crucified Lord Jesus Christ. The Dodgers organization invited SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE, then as a result of an outpouring of thousands of protests, disinvited the group, but then the radical, woke, progressive, cancel-culture thinking, which obviously dominates the Los Angeles Dodgers ownership and decision makers, re-invited this blasphemous group once again. This intolerant hate group showed up at the LA Dodgers PRIDE NIGHT, a baseball game at Dodgers stadium on June 16th. To me, it was totally improper for the Dodgers to honor pride month, really none of their baseball business, but to do so with this vial, blasphemous, hate group was the ultimate disrespectful and blasphemous attack upon all things CATHOLIC, and consequently all Christians.Up stepped the aggressive organization:CATHOLIC VOTE.This organization stands up for the rights of Catholics and indirectly all Christians and will not tolerate any hate, blasphemous attack, or disrespect of any kind to Catholicism. Ironic, is it not, that our illustrious president, Joe Biden, claims to be a devout Catholic but has no problem endorsing Pride Month and the LGBTQIA movement, which is anti-Christian and Catholic in so many ways. I wonder if any of this anti-Catholic activity reaches the ears of Pope Francis! The organization CATHOLIC VOTE went public, with advertising everywhere, demanding that the Dodgers:1. Publicly apologize for honoring this so-called SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE.2. Pledge, this Dodgers organization, to never host or honor an anti-Catholic hate group ever again.3. Fire every person within the Dodgers organization responsible for organizing and approving this reprehensible stunt.CATHOLIC VOTE is determined that the Dodgers organization will not get away with celebrating sexual perversion to mock Catholics. I can only imagine the outcry, the protest, politically and culturally, and the litigation which would follow such blasphemous mockery of Jews and Judaism, or Muslims and Islam. But to the Dodgers, it seems like the blasphemous mockery of Catholics and Christianity generally is fair game, attacks and disrespect the Dodgers organization can get away with.I, like millions of other Christians, and a baseball fan, love the game, and always respected the Dodgers organization, until now.Up stepped the great organization Judicial Watch. JW filed a lawsuit along with Catholic Vote, perhaps motivated by this latest Dodgers blasphemous action to sue the FBI, the once objective, fair, and well-trusted FEDERAL BUREAU OF INVESTIGATION, and the Department of Justice of which it is a part, alleging the targeting of Catholics by the FBI who adhere to traditional beliefs on abortion and other cultural issues. Judicial Watch president, Tom Fitton, issued this statement: “In a brazen attack on the First Amendment and Christians, the Biden FBI planned to treat Catholics as potential terrorists and spy on them in their churches.”Tom Fitton of Judicial Watch and Brian Burch of Catholic Vote are two formidable, no-quit, no-nonsense individuals, formidable foes to say the least. They are determined to find, identify, litigate, and rid our beloved country of those biased individuals who attack Catholics specifically and all Christians generally as well. It is time, overdue in many ways, for all Catholics and in fact, all Christians to live out and make happen the mission of Catholic Vote which is:“To inspire every Catholic in America to live out the truth of our faith in public life!”Amen. Get on with it. Stand up for the First Amendment, for freedom of religion, and assembly, and put a stop once and for all to all things anti-Christian. In many ways, that Stand is now or never.Clayton Kershaw, star pitcher for the LA Dodgers agrees. Strong Christian that he is, he protested Pride Night at Dodgers stadium and more importantly, the honoring of THE SISTERS OF PERPETUAL INDULGENCE. I only wish other members of the Dodgers organization, or perhaps, more importantly, the baseball team itself, had stood up, protested, and realized the unbelievable enormity of the action of the Dodgers organization and the anti-religious, Catholic and Christian disrespect of this action. My fellow Americans and fellow Christians, if every Christian, of every denomination, were to stand up, take charge of culture and government, and education and the media, rather than being intimidated or silent, or withdrawn, or perhaps worst of all indifferent, and FIGHT THE FIGHT OF FAITH, America could be restored overnight and in one election to its traditional roots and the deep and abiding respect for real religion, for real Christianity. Unfortunately, protests occur, and millions of American citizens are offended, speak out, but for some reason, do not follow through, and as a result, do not win the spiritual battle. To fight the fight of faith is to win the spiritual battle, not just to fight. We the Christians fight not with traditional weapons, force, or might, but with the power of the gospel, conviction, stand, uncompromising, with love not hate. But I believe we must be determined to win this battle, to preserve our freedoms, to protect our Loving Lord, and the real Christian faith in which we believe. Do you agree? And if you do, are you willing to lay all on the altar and win this battle? Christians are not hateful. All those anti-Christian are the hateful ones. Somehow, WE THE CHRISTIANS must fight this fight of faith with love and do so with all our might!
Today we take a fascinating look into how Whitey Bulger rose to power in Boston's underworld in the 70's and 80's, with not only the FBI's protection, but also their direct help. No one (that we're aware of publicly, at least) benefitted more from the FBI's Top Echelon Informant Program than Irish-American gangster, Whitey Bulger. Whitey rose through the ranks of Boston's organized crime scene thanks to a combination of cunning, ruthlessness, a little help from his politically connected brother, Billy, and a LOT of help from the FBI. Whitey's top informant status, and the degree to which he corrupted his handler, Special Agent John Connolly, allowed him to get away with murder after murder, and run one criminal racket after another with impunity. For nearly two decades the FBI protected the most dangerous man in Boston in order to take down other people who were far less threatening to the general public. Why? And how did this happen? This episode of the CFO Playbook features an interview with Chris Voss, Founder and CEO of The Black Swan Group. Previously, Chris was the lead international kidnapping negotiator for the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the FBI's hostage negotiation representative for the National Security Council's Hostage Working Group. Chris used his many years of experience in international crises and high-stakes negotiations to develop a unique program that applies globally proven techniques to the business world. Through the Black Swan Group, he provides training for a variety of businesses and individuals on negotiation skills. He's also the author of Never Split the Difference: Negotiating as if Your Life Depended on It.In this episode, Chris and I talk about how he became an FBI hostage negotiator, what a CFO can learn from negotiation, and the three biggest mistakes to avoid when negotiating.--------Guest Quotes:“Really counterintuitive stuff, this thing that we call empathy, you know, we call tactical empathy. It's ability to influence, if you can wrap your mind around what it really is, it works under all circumstances. Doesn't matter, as long as human beings are involved, whether it's a colleague, whether it's a client, whether it's an employee, whether it's somebody you work for, it seems mystical because it really operates on neuroscience and the feelings of being understood. But human beings are wired to be completely emotional. You know, every decision, you make up your mind based on what you care about, which makes decision making an emotional process because your fundamental basis is what you care about. And so then it's just applied emotional intelligence. And you know you can succeed in the boardroom or work with what I learned dealing with a drug dealer or a terrorist.” - Chris Voss--------Topics:03:02 How to become an FBI hostage negotiator03:41 What a CFO can learn from negotiation12:52 Three biggest mistakes in negotiation18:45 Achieving outcomes22:28 In-person versus digital communication27:38 Real life stories--------Sponsor:This show is brought to you by Soldo, the brighter way to manage business spending and expenses. Firefighters who set fires, officially called 'firefighter arsonists', may be small in number, but they definitely make an impact. While things like insurance fraud and covering up another crime are common motives for arson outside the firefighting community, experts say those aren't what drive firefighter arsonists. So how does this happen? How does a firefighter turn into arsonist? Well. Let's take a look.See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.

Unidentified Flying Objects by United States Federal Bureau of Investigation audiobook. Through the U.S. Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) this series of communications has been de-classified and made public. Most names have been omitted, however much information of the sightings of UFOs in 1947 can be gleaned from these communications which were primarily between the FBI and other U.S. Government and military organizations. It should be noted that the U.S. Air Force only became a separate entity in 1947, having split from the U.S. Army at that time. And they became very busy times for the fledgling military organization. The slant of this de-classified material is chiefly written communications between the FBI and the military machine in 1947. Correspondence herein spans July and August of 1947 which will forever remain as the beginning of serious first-hand UFO experience in the annals of history. Learn more about your ad choices. Differentiation is key in marketing. And now with the rise of AI, I can't help but think – how can I differentiate from generative artificial intelligence? One way – our unique backgrounds. An example. Our CEO's book – The Marketer as Philosopher: 40 Brief Reflections on the Power of Your Value Proposition (https://meclabs.com/course/the-marketer-as-philosopher/). This book is wildly different than what an AI would write. And just as different from most business books you'll see – which sometimes seem as formulaic as an AI writer. There are reflections, not directions. There are da Vinci-style illustrations illuminating the core concepts. The book is bound in leather. I think Flint McGlaughlin was able to create it because of his unique background – theology and philosophy combined with marketing bound all together in one human being.I thought of the importance of our unique backgrounds while talking to our latest guest on How I Made It In Marketing. His background was no less unique – West Texas, childhood illness, art school, world travel, Hollywood, and now – marketing. One of the lessons he shared was “make the work you would like to see.” So, I asked him about how one's unique background affects and informs that ethos. While we can all learn the same marketing skills, they are powered by this fingerprint that no one else has – our lived experienced. You can hear his answer to my question, along with many more lesson-filled stories from a colorful career, in the latest episode of the How I Made It In Marketing podcast. Our guest is Justin Herber, CMO and Chief Brand Officer, Tractor Beverage Company (https://drinktractor.com/).Tractor is the first and only Certified Organic, Non-GMO, full-line beverage solution in food service. On this episode of the NTEB Prophecy News Podcast, America continues her long, downward slide in the abyss of nations, descending into utter chaos and lawlessness. I am not talking about the lawlessness of ANTIFA, Black Lives Matter or the Capitol insurrection on January 6th. No, I am talking about something infinitely more terrifying, lawlessness from our lawmakers and leaders in Washington DC. In the name of 'truth, justice and the American way' the United States has become an authoritarian police state where despotic groups like the FBI and the CIA use their overwhelming power and force to carry out a political agenda. Today on the Prophecy News Podcast, we show you just how deep the rabbit hole goes. It's no secret that for decades in America, there has been endless plans and schemes cooked up and hatched by the people in power, and most of the times those schemes have gone soundly against the best interest in American citizens. But here on Day 882 of 15 Days To Flatten The Curve, we are watching something truly astounding. We are seeing what used to be done in secret now being boldly and brazenly done out in the open, and they are daring you to stop them.
Did you know an evil gay couple ran the FBI for 40+ years? Ok, maybe "evil" is a strong word. Morally ambiguous. Well, Clyde was maybe an ok guy, but his beau J. Edgar Hoover sure as hell wasn't.
Off and on from 2006 to 2012, Snowden had worked as a CIA analyst, a subcontractor for the NSA, and several other positions that gave him access to classified NSA information that enabled him to see the true scope of how the US was surveilling its own citizens. Does leaking those docs to the press in 2013 make him a traitor? Or does it make him a hero who opened the eyes of the American public to the dangerous and unconstitutional surveillance our government has been clandestinely carrying out for years? I was familiar with Edward Snowden before this week, and the gist of what he did, but I truly didn't realize the scope of the surveillance and the amount of private data gathered on US citizens who were not accused of any crimes. Are you okay with agents working on behalf of the US government going through your private text messages whenever they want for whatever reason? Emails? Looking through your photos? Combing through your internet browsing history? Monitoring your GPS positioning to determine your travel patterns? Are you okay with Big Brother watching you? If you're not, too bad, because it's already happening. It's BEEN happening for years. This is what Snowden exposed, and he exposed it because it's wildly unethical. The fight for privacy is important because it's a fight for freedom. Is possibly allowing the government to make your existence a little safer worth losing so much of your freedom? We got an interesting one today. Bad Magic Productions Monthly Patreon Donation: The Bad Magic Charity for July is The National Compassion Fund. Federal Bureau of Investigation v. Fazaga, (2022), was a United States Supreme Court case dealing with the use of law enforcement surveillance under the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act (FISA) of 1978 and the state secrets privilege defense. The case stems from a 2011 class action lawsuit filed against the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) related to one of its surveillance operations. In August 2012, the district court dismissed the case on the basis of the FBI's invocation of state secrets privilege. The Ninth Circuit overturned this ruling in part in 2019, ruling that FISA precluded the defendants from invoking the state secrets defense. However, the Supreme Court overturned the Ninth Circuit's ruling in a unanimous decision in March 2022, stating that FISA does not override the state secrets defense. Background. In 2006, the FBI and the Orange County, California Joint Terrorism Task Force ran Operation Flex, a counterterrorism operation, by recruiting a fitness instructor, Craig Monteilh, to become an informant. Monteilh, under an assumed name, pretended to convert to Islam and joined the Islamic Center of Irvine (ICOI) in Irvine, California. Besides his own gathering of information, Monteilh wore and planted recording devices throughout the mosque and in homes and businesses of ICOI members that Monteilh came to know personally, passing on the information to the FBI. After about a year, Monteilh began making statements about taking violent action while in the presence of ICOI. He was reported to the police and put under a restraining order from ICOI. The FBI lost confidence in Monteilh and ended the operation. Monteilh was convicted of grand theft in connection with the distribution of steroids in a separate matter in 2008, and ended up in California state prison. In April 2008, he was stabbed repeatedly in prison after being labeled a snitch. Monteilh filed a lawsuit against the FBI, stating that they failed to protect him after using him for their investigation, and made numerous details of Operation Flex public in 2009 prior to filing his suit against the FBI in 2010. Monteilh also spoke to these details of Operation Flex in a 2009 case the FBI brought against Ahmad Niazi, an Afghan immigrant that Monteilh had attempted to blackmail to become an FBI informant, though charges against Niazi were eventually dropped.

On November 8th, 2021 the Supreme Court heard oral argument in Federal Bureau of Investigation v. Fazaga, a case which concerned whether Section 1806(f) of the Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Act of 1978 displaces the state-secrets privilege and authorizes a district court to resolve, in camera and ex parte, the merits of a lawsuit challenging the lawfulness of government surveillance by considering the privileged evidence. Joining today to discuss this case in great detail is Dr. Riddhi Sohan Dasgupta, Counsel at Schaerr | Jaffe LLP. Dr. Dasgupta has served as the Deputy General Counsel of the United States Department of Homeland Security (DHS), Special Counsel of the United States Department of Education (ED), and adjunct faculty at George Mason's Antonin Scalia Law School.
The FBI Story? More like The Boring Story: Special Agent Jimmy Stewart Harangues Drowsy Quantico Recruits. The FBI Story is a 1959 film from director Mervyn LeRoy starring James Stewart, Vera Miles, Murray Hamilton, Larry Pennell, Nick Adams, Diane Jergens, Jean Willes, Joyce Taylor, and Victor Millan.Oh, and let's not forget, this film introduces a sharp newcomer named J. Edgar Hoover, as himself! To be fair, Hoover should also get a producer credit, given that he had a lot of editorial control over the film. He even apparently demanded that his bud LeRoy re-shoot certain parts of the story, to make the FBI look better. Frankly, we're not sure that the entrenched, controversial bureau director succeeded as a script doctor. This film — based on a book by Don Whitehead — follows Stewart's clean-cut, constantly-complaining FBI Agent Chip Hardesty throughout his career. And his run at the FBI is as long and winding as this movie is long-winded. Thrill as Hardesty chews out his kids, deals with his wife's griping, and whines about his job. Oh, and also combats the Ku Klux Klan, investigates the Osage Indian murders, and tangles with rogues like John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Baby Face Nelson, and Machine Gun Kelly. Sounds cool? Well, somehow ... it's not.Listen to Áine and Kevin surveil topics like long run times, disapproving fathers, the Space Canine Patrol Agents, bad speeches, and David Grann's Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI.Follow us on the usual social media suspects:FacebookTwitterInstagramAnd send ominous broadcasts to mysterytomepodcast@gmail.com.Mystery to Me is a production of Mystery Sheet LLC.See Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

After murdering 12 people at the Borderline Bar and Grill, Ian David Long turned his gun on himself and took his own life. With the killer dead and beyond the reach of earthly justice, one might imagine there would be no role for an investigative agency like the FBI to play in the case. But there was. This episode of the Murder Sheet focuses on a little known division of the FBI which concentrates on helping those left behind after a tragedy, victims who need more from the justice system than what can be delivered in a courtroom. I throw in a quick story about a really strange but fun loving bunch of boys named the Morris's who were just filthy rich and partied like rock stars but one of them gets run over by the "drunk bus" in Vail during a protest of sort. A sad but true and very apropos story about how one of my friends met his demise. When then finish off with a bunch of asshole kids who cross paths with Willis and I and it doesn't end well for them on the way up Vail Pass when they get to look down the barrel of a Desert Eagle. The largest hand gun on earth.
