Games? Must we? This week we're leaving Spooktober behind us and kicking off No-Theme-ber with a bang, as King Bob frontman and Roxy Fever host Jackson McDonald returns with our second Hitchcock in just three weeks as he redeems himself by bringing a cross-country spy thriller to the table that set the template for summer thrills for everything that's come after it. Yes, it's 1959's North by Northwest, directed by Alfred Hitchcock, written by Ernest Lehman, and starring Cary Grant, Eva Marie Saint, James Mason, Leo G. Carroll and Martin Landau. A classic mistaken identity thriller, Hitchcock is recombining story elements from a number of spy films of his past, leaving one final stamp on the genre before turning his focus back to horror. The end result is a movie that has its fingerprints all over not just the Mission: Impossible franchise, but what we expect from blockbuster entertainment period. Plus: Jackson and JMo combine for theatrical field trips to The Wild Robot and Venom 3: The Last Dance, while Hayley's still buzzing over a visit to the Video Stop in Watrous, Saskatchewan. Listen to King Bob's new album, Rookie: linktr.ee/allhailkingbob Other works referenced in this episode include The Birds, The Stand, Longlegs, Us, Shutter Island, Malignant, The Thing, Star Wars, Fargo, High Fidelity, The Black Phone, Invitation to Hell, Casa Bonita Mi Amor, 6 Days to Air, Where We Call Home, Super Mario Party Jamboree, Vertigo, Rear Window, Secret Window, Trap, Koyaanisqatsi, Family Guy, Mad Men, Rope, Charade, Big Trouble in Little China, Total Recall, Hail Caesar!, Burn After Reading, Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, The Maltese Falcon, Jaws, Rebecca, and The 39 Steps, among others. We'll be back next week as No-Theme-ber continues with the Steve Martin rom-com Roxanne, famously filmed in Nelson, BC (or at least famously in this part of the world), a selection brought to us by beloved guest Rachel Hadaway, who will be joining us for that one. Until then, we'll see you at the movies!!

Director James Camali, alongside actors Carly Pope and Jance Enslin, engaged in a compelling conversation with host Elias during the Press Day for their latest film, "The Mental State." This cinematic masterpiece offers a tense and honest portrayal of the pressing issues afflicting America today. Filled with powerful performances and a heart-wrenching narrative, the film revolves around a high school senior and his family in rural Kentucky as they grapple with his recent severe mental health crisis. "The Mental State" is not just a film; it's a complex character study, drawing parallels to cinematic gems like "The Secret Window," "A Beautiful Mind," "Donnie Darko," and "Elephant." Directed and edited by the talented James Camali, known for his work on "A Fatal Obsession" and "And The Heavens Must Have Cried," the film is co-written by Jeremy Barclay ("Binary," "The Garden"), Joshua Barclay ("Gary," "A Fatal Obsession"), and James Camali himself. The production is in the capable hands of Matt Einstein, Ronnee Swenton, and Glen Trotiner, known for their contributions to projects like "Power," "300: Rise of An Empire," and "Morbius." "The Mental State" follows Andy, a high school senior in his hometown, who becomes increasingly convinced that a dangerous shooter is threatening the community. As he delves deeper into the mystery, he discovers a sinister conspiracy linked to the girl he loves. Andy's behavior at school becomes erratic, and his single mother, Angela, faces the challenge of finding and affording the professional care he desperately requires. As Andy's mental health deteriorates, the narrative reaches a tragic climax at the local high school, unveiling the heartbreaking consequences of the underlying issues affecting both Andy and his community. In essence, "The Mental State" is not just a movie; it's a powerful exploration of the human psyche, echoing the spirit of classic films while addressing contemporary societal challenges. With a stellar cast and a dedicated production team, this film promises to leave a lasting impact on audiences, inviting them to reflect on the intricacies of mental health and the challenges faced by individuals and families in today's world. This Stephen King novella was made into a movie starring Johnny Depp, who was riding the high from his Pirates of the Caribbean movie. The movie makes a change that totally took me by surprise! But does this change make the story better or worse?***We recorded this episode a month ago, before the Deep/Heard trial had officially began. We mention it because talk of its approach was in the news, but it hadn't actually begun. It is coincidental that we are covering a Depp movie while he is in the middle of this trial*** Check out Ink to Film! https://www.inktofilm.com/ https://www.youtube.com/c/InktoFilm https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/ink-to-film https://open.spotify.com/show/5VLp1K2NKWdSYNjZzy57w0?si=3076def4f5d44ece

A shower curtain. Blood circling a plug hole. Janet Leigh's gut wrenching (and likely, gut spilling) scream. And a killer wielding a knife, while wearing his mother's dress and a grey wig. Yes, it's just your average overnight stay at Bates Motel. A place much like the Hotel California The Eagles sang about in 1976 - You can check-out any time you like, But you can never leave! This week, of course, we are talking about the seminal 1960 classic ‘Psycho', based on the original 1959 novel by Robert Bloch. Directed by Alfred Hitchcock and influenced by the idea of the ‘banality of evil' – a seemingly dull and innocuous killer who is anything but - the film was expected to bomb. Instead, it marked the collapse of the strict Hays Code, and brought about the evolution of what we dub today as the “slasher” film. In short, the film was a huge hit. From Anthony Perkins's iconic performance, to the Gus Van Sant 90s remake we won't be talking about on this show, through to the three time Emmy Nominated series Bates Motel on A&E, Norman Bates and his Oedipus complex have captured the imagination of horror fans the world over for over 60 years. But did you know that the ‘fictional' Norman Bates might not be so fictional after all? Listen in to find out the true horror behind Psycho! Learn from the best 1 Watch 78/52 (documentary, 2017) 2. The Birds, Alfred Hitchcock 1963 – A wealthy San Francisco socialite pursues a potential boyfriend to a small Northern California town that slowly takes a turn for the bizarre when birds of all kinds suddenly begin to attack people. Based on the Daphne du Maurier story. 2. Orphan (2009) - A married couple with a rocky past adopt 9-year old, Esther to fill the void created by a recently-stillborn baby. However, Esther is not quite who she seems. 3. Audition (1999) - A widower takes an offer to screen girls at a special audition, arranged for him by a friend to find him a new wife. But when he falls for the sweet and gentle Asami, he soon discovers she is not who she appears to be after all. 4. Secret Window (2004) - Mort Rainey, a writer just emerging from a painful divorce with his ex-wife, is stalked at his remote lake house by a psychotic stranger and would-be scribe who claims Rainey swiped his best story idea. But as Rainey endeavors to prove his innocence, he begins to question his own sanity. 5. The Silence of the Lambs (1991). Because Ed Gein.
