Homeschool freedom came under threat in Virginia earlier this year, and hundreds of families quickly stepped up to defend it—proving that the price of freedom is constant vigilance. In this episode of Homeschool Talks, Callie Chaplow, Director of Government Affairs for the Home Educators Association of Virginia (HEAV) joins Jim Mason, President of HSLDA, to discuss how families rallied at the Virginia statehouse to defend homeschool rights during an active legislative season, particularly families new to homeschooling! Join the conversation on how Virginia's homeschool community made their voices heard—and what we can all learn from their advocacy. “[This bill] was an attack on all homeschoolers. It [attempted to] change the homeschooling process and it added a whole bunch of requirements. [Homeschool families] rallied. In Virginia, about 40% of homeschoolers in Virginia were not homeschooling pre-COVID. That's a gravitational shift in culture of people who have never had to defend their homeschool freedom. This was an opportunity for all these new homeschoolers to really value what we have. And they did. People who had never been involved in the political process, never have come down to the Capitol, never written or called a legislator—they [rose up].”—Callie Chaplow
It's Good Friday, April 18th, A.D. 2025. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Adam McManus and Jonathan Clark Chinese Communists sentence Christians for Bible distribution Chinese Communists gave nine Christians prison sentences and large fines for re-selling and distributing Bibles in Hohhot, Inner Mongolia located in North China, reports International Christian Concern. On April 10th, the religious freedom magazine Bitter Winter reported their prison sentences were four years long and their fines ranged from $68 to more than $136,000. The sentences stem from charges and arrests in 2021, where the Christians bought legally published Bibles in Nanjing but ended up re-selling and distributing them at much lower prices as they wanted to share God's Word as a means of evangelism. These Chinese Christians will be inspired by 2 Corinthians 4:16-17. It says, “Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all.” Salvadoran President: Deported man will not be sent back to US When Salvadoran President Nayib Bukele came to the White House on April 14th, CNN host Kaitlan Collins asked a question about an illegal alien El Salvadoran man from Maryland, named Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who had been deported back to his country on March 15th. TRUMP: “Let's hear the question from this very low rated anchor.” COLLINS: “Do you plan to return him?” To be clear, Garcia was arrested in Baltimore, Maryland on March 12 by Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents. Attorney General Pam Bondi explained that he is a member of MS-13, a gang, which Trump has now designated a terrorist organization. BONDI: “In 2019, two courts, an immigration court and an appellate immigration court, ruled that he was a member of MS-13 and he was illegally in our country.” In response to Kaitlan Collins' question, Salvadoran President Bukele laughed, reports The Epoch Times. BUKELE: “The question is preposterous. How could I smuggle a terrorist to the United States? I don't have the power to return him to the United States.” Later, outside the White House, Stephen Miller, Trump's Deputy Chief of Staff, schooled reporters who seem to be more concerned with illegal alien MS-13 gang members than they are with the laws of our country. MILLER: “A judge has said he must be deported from the country. He has no right to remain here any longer. He must be removed from the country. So, his only options are to be deported to his home country or another country. That's it. There's no other option. He doesn't get to stay here. He doesn't get to live here. He has no future here. He has no right to be here. He's an illegal alien. “So, when you keep saying ‘return' because you've been spun up by the Open Borders advocates, you all seem to be operating under the illusion that he would be able to come to United States and just continue to live here illegally. That's not an option available to him. His only choices in life are to live in El Salvador or to live in another country. That's it. There's no other option, legally or otherwise, because he came to our country illegally. Do you understand that?” Trump administration examines negative impacts over "transgendering" The Trump administration ordered the National Institutes of Health to study the effects of so-called “gender transitioning.” A leaked memo indicates the agency must investigate the “chemical and surgical mutilation” of children and adults. In particular, the Trump administration wants to identify negative impacts on physical and mental health caused by such practices. The investigation will also look into “regret and detransition” by people who have pretended to be the opposite sex. Trump hosted an Easter prayer service On Wednesday night, President Donald Trump hosted an Easter prayer service dinner at the White House, reports The Associated Press. He affirmed the ministry, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Listen. TRUMP: “Nearly 2,000 years ago, during the sacred week, the living Son of God entered Jerusalem in triumph. Soon after, the Savior of mankind, who brought truth and light into the world, was betrayed, arrested and tried, beaten and nailed to a cross and crucified. “For our sake, He gave up His life and, as the very great Reverend Billy Graham once said, ‘God proved His love on the cross. When Christ hung and bled and died, it was God saying to the world, ‘I love you.' “The death and resurrection of Jesus are the essence of the Christian faith. Whether rich or poor, healthy or sick, young or old, or in times of peace or war, Christians everywhere find solace and hope in the knowledge that Christ died for them and that they could be united with Him in Heaven. And that's what we want. That's what we all want.” Luke 24:6 says, “He is not here; He has risen! Remember how He told you, while He was still with you in Galilee.” 2 killed, 6 wounded at Florida State University shooting On Thursday, two people were killed at Florida State University in Tallahassee and six others were wounded by Phoenix Ikner, a 20-year-old political science major, as he opened fire from an orange Hummer. The son of a Leon County Sheriff's deputy, he used his mother's handgun in the campus rampage, reports the Miami Herald. Appearing on Fox News Channel, FSU student Owen Girard described what he witnessed. GIRARD: “Sounded like a jackhammer, of these repetitive beats going on in the distance. Thought it was construction. Next thing you know, you have all of these students running at you, yelling that there's a shooter, so you just drop everything and run. That was our experience. We ran. We hid on the outskirts of campus.” Florida State University President Rick McCullough spoke at the press conference. McCULLOUGH: “This is a tragic day for Florida State University. We are absolutely heartbroken by the violence that occurred on our campus earlier today. Two have died. Five other innocents are being treated for their injuries. We're working to support the victims, their families, and everyone affected by this traumatic event.” Texas school choice passes the state House Texas lawmakers are one step closer to approving a $1 billion private school voucher program hours after passing a bill to allocate $7.7 billion in funding for public schools, reports The Christian Post. The voucher proposal, known as Senate Bill 2, passed the Texas House of Representatives on Thursday by a largely party-line vote of 85-63, in which all Democrats and two Republicans voted against it. Illinois bill hostile to homeschooling dies for now And finally, an Illinois bill, hostile to homeschoolers as well as private schools, missed a procedural deadline in April, reported Capitol News Illinois. If it became law, homeschoolers could face penalties for not filling out government paperwork. However, the bill's main sponsor, Democratic State Rep. Terra Howard, has requested an extension to keep it on life support. On March 19th, 8,000 homeschooling parents and kids traveled to the Illinois state capitol where they packed the committee room and extended into the hallways and the Capitol Rotunda, reports HSLDA. What meaningful ways can homeschool families find to support military families during the holiday season to honor them and thank them for their service? The military exists to preserve and protect our freedom, and often it is the entire family that pays the price–especially during the holidays. Perhaps a parent is deployed during Christmas or relocated to a base separate from his or her family. Natalie Mack, military homeschool expert and HSLDA's Military Community Outreach Coordinator, joins Zan to share practical opportunities for blessing service members and their loved ones. From donating airline miles for wounded warriors to writing heartfelt letters to deployed personnel, Natalie highlights numerous national programs that families can participate in. The conversation weaves together Natalie's personal experiences as a military spouse with concrete ways families can engage their children in impactful service, whether the military personnel they are serving are a continent away, or at a base around the corner. Parents, use these opportunities to teach your children that freedom isn't free. It's Thursday, October 24th, A.D. 2024. This is The Worldview in 5 Minutes heard on 125 radio stations and at www.TheWorldview.com. I'm Adam McManus. (Adam@TheWorldview.com) By Jonathan Clark Persecution of Christians has worsened since 2022 Aid to the Church in Need released a report on Christian persecution this week. The study found the situation for Christians in 18 countries of key concern significantly worsened between 2022 and 2024. Militant Islam was responsible for increased persecution across African countries. And Christians continue to face discrimination under authoritarian regimes like China, India, and Iran. Aid to the Church in Need noted, “Recurring themes in the report include the displacement of Christian communities following attacks by extremist groups and the forced marriage and conversion of Christian women and girls, as well as the kidnapping and intimidation of priests and the publication of derogatory content about Christianity in school textbooks.” In Matthew 5:11-12, Jesus said, “Blessed are you when they revile and persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely for My sake. Rejoice and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in Heaven.” Britain ready to legalize assisted suicide The U.K. parliament is considering a bill to legalize assisted suicide. A Christian group called CARE is opposing the bill and asking Christians to write their members of Parliament. Ross Hendry, CEO of CARE, said, “With huge pressure in the media and politics, we face the worst ever threat of assisted suicide becoming law. I urge you, please, to write to politicians to share your concerns. . . . Throughout history, the Church has strongly opposed assisted suicide and euthanasia.” Kamala doubles down on abortion Meanwhile in the United States, Vice President Kamala Harris voiced her no-exceptions pro-abortion view on Tuesday. She told NBC's Hallie Jackson that she opposes any concessions on a national abortion law, including religious exemptions. JACKSON: “So, as a question of pragmatism then, what concessions would be on the table? Religious exemptions, for example? Is that something that you would consider? HARRIS: “I don't think we should be making concessions when we're talking about a fundamental freedom to make decisions about your own body.” The Center for Baptist Leadership warned, “Kamala Harris says that she does not believe in religious exemptions for abortion. This means that all Christian hospitals, healthcare providers, and businesses would be forced to provide and cover abortion if she got her way. It would be the end of the First Amendment and religious liberty as we know it.” Trump: “Americans of faith are soul of our country!” Former President Donald Trump addressed the 11th Hour Faith Leaders Meeting in North Carolina on Monday. He warned a Harris administration would come after Christians while promising his administration would fight to protect Christians. TRUMP: “If Kamala Harris gets four more years, the radical Left is not going to leave Christians alone. It's going to get worse and worse. You're going to suffer greatly. They will come after Christians all over the country. “I will create a new federal task force on fighting anti-Christian bias that will be done immediately. (cheers) And I think it's very important for the people in this room to know, like Dr Ben Carson knows, Americans of faith are not a threat to our country. Americans of faith are the soul of our country, right?” (cheers) Paxton suing doctor who gave transgender drugs to 21 kids Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton announced last week that he is suing a doctor in the state for giving transgender drugs to 21 children. Paxton said, “Texas passed a law to protect children from these dangerous unscientific medical interventions that have irreversible and damaging effects. Doctors who continue to provide these harmful ‘gender transition' drugs and treatments will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.” If convicted, Dr. May Chi Lau could lose her license and face $1 million in fines. German homeschooling family allowed to stay in U.S. another year And finally, the Home School Legal Defense Association shared an encouraging update on the Romeike Family yesterday. The family left Germany where they faced fines and imprisonment for homeschooling. They received asylum in the U.S. back in 2008. For some reason, U.S. officials decided to deport them back to Germany in recent years. Thankfully, HSLDA was able to obtain a one-year delay of deportation for the family last October. In the latest update, they announced officials have extended the Romeikes permission to stay in the U.S. for another year. Joel Grewe with HSLDA gave thanks for the decision, quoting Lamentations 3:22. He said, “We're grateful the current hurdle in front of them has passed, and we remain hopeful for the future. Indeed, ‘The steadfast love of the Lord never ceases; His mercies never come to an end.'” You can support the Romeikes' ongoing legal case through a link in our transcript today at TheWorldview.com. I'll tell you, in the 1980s, we felt very alone. We only knew one family. And then we found this small group that we didn't even know existed! But now, everybody knows a homeschooler. There are homeschoolers probably right on your block or around the corner. They're everywhere.”—Anne Miller

Did you know that homeschooling wasn't always legal? Robert interviews Jim Mason, President of HSLDA. Jeffrey Lewis, President of Illinois Christian Home Educators (ICHE), joins Jim Mason, President of HSLDA, in this second part on what is happening in Illinois. They discuss the recent call for more homeschool regulations in Illinois, and what homeschool families can do to face this new wave of opposition to homeschool freedom happening in the United States. “Government officials want to do things that are going to make society better. And they feel like counting things, tallying things, registering things is often a way to help. It's an expensive thing to do. But it doesn't always do much other than count things. . .And so all of the families, the thousands and thousands of families in Illinois, who've been doing a great job schooling their children at home, now are going to have an extra burden that could put them in jeopardy if they don't comply. And they haven't done anything wrong.”—Jeffrey Lewis

What does the future hold as we face a new wave of opposition to homeschooling? In this episode, Jim Mason highlights how homeschooling can provide real solutions for society, and how homeschooling has evolved from a movement into a mature and enduring institution. This transformation is largely due to the crucial role families and state organizations have played in advocating for homeschool freedom alongside HSLDA. “Healthy institutions play a vital role in positively shaping the character of those they serve by encouraging and modeling virtue, which in turn encourages and models virtue to their communities. Could it be that we have already built a new institution, an institution built up around a community voluntarily associating together for a healthy purpose?”—Jim Mason
HSLDA is committed to continually improving homeschool laws in every state—like HSLDA's attorney for Ohio, Amy Buchmeyer, just assisted with! Ohio's archaic homeschool law, dating back to the 1980s, was finally updated thanks to the tireless work of homeschool families alongside HSLDA. Join Amy and Jim Mason (HSLDA President) in a conversation about the evolving legal landscape across the states, as well as the increased media attention on homeschooling. Amy, a homeschool graduate turned attorney, will share her unique perspective on defending homeschooling rights and the significant improvements she helped achieve. “There's something about being homeschooled, about getting to have the space to learn at your pace, to learn with your family, to get out and have hands-on learning. You don't always get that when you're sitting at a desk from 8 to 3. When I was homeschooled, I could read in a tree. I could do all kinds of things to keep myself engaged in the learning process. And it worked. My mom instilled in all five of us (children) a love of learning, a love for the Lord, and a good relationship with my parents. We've turned out pretty well.”—Amy Buchmeyer
Whether you homeschool or not, it's crucial for freedom-loving people to be aware of the recent legislative offensive against homeschooling in West Virginia and other states. Phylicia Masonheimer, homeschool mom, graduate, and founder of Every Woman A Theologian, joins your host Jim Mason, President of HSLDA, in an encouraging conversation about embracing the calling of homeschooling. In this episode, they discuss Phylicia's ministry, how she has learned the importance of patience on her homeschool journey, and her advocacy work for homeschool freedom. “One of the things that people often say to homeschool parents is, well, I could never do that. I'm not patient enough. And it's a frustrating thing for homeschool parents to hear because it's actually quite dismissive. It says that patience is something inherent, that you're born with it. That is really dismissive of how much work it is for homeschool parents to show up every day. Patience is a discipline. It's a fruit of the spirit. It's something that we have worked in us by doing hard work over and over, by being willing to sacrifice and lay ourselves down. Patience is a muscle. It grows as it is used.”—Phylicia Masonheimer

In this episode of The Frontline, Nathan discusses an opinion piece written in USA Today regarding homeschooling and the need to regulate it in order to prevent abuse. Nathan discusses some of the findings of researchers such as Dr. Ray and Dr. Shaquille regarding the likelihood of abuse in a homeschooling setting. Their findings directly contradict the dubious claims made in this opinion piece, and show the folly in focusing on homeschooling as "hotbed" of maltreatment of students instead of focusing on situations where abuse is much more common such as in the public school system. As I sat listening to Jen's heart-wrenching story of the battle with her school district over the health of her daughter, who has a rare genetic disorder, I was struck by the sheer determination that this momma has to protect her kids. Would we all do the same? The fabric of our educational systems is tested when their intentions clash with the complex needs of our children. In a riveting chapter of today's narrative, we expose the intimidating battle one family fought against their school district, standing their ground on truancy charges to protect their daughter's health and educational rights. From the school ignoring doctor's orders, to claiming they have the right to deny a letter of intent to homeschool, it has never been more clear that we, as parents, need to know our rights. These tales of resilience shine a light on the oft-overlooked courage parents must summon to navigate the bureaucratic labyrinth and ensure our child's well-being against those who deem themselves as "authority."Wrapping up our journey, we explore the intricate dance between parenting, politics, and education, an intersection that has taken on new complexities in the wake of a global pandemic. As we reflect on the evolving landscape of education, civil liberties, and the values that underpin them, I invite you to join us in considering the empowerment and responsibility homeschooling entails in these transformative times.Know your rights: HSLDA.orgJIBBY MUSHROOM COFFEE - try today with code CHERYL20 for 20% off!Tuttle Twins Books!- with code Cheryl40 for 40% off the age 5-11 series!Like the show? The HiSET, formerly known as the CHSPE, is a proficiency exam that homeschool graduates in California can take. While it is not mandatory, it can be helpful for homeschool graduates who face discrimination when applying to colleges or state jobs. Recently, an HSLDA member family encountered a problem when trying to register for the HiSET. They received an automated message stating that they needed accredited transcripts from a public school, which was not required by law. HSLDA sent a legal letter citing relevant court cases and the family's homeschool transcripts, resulting in the California Department of Education updating their registration process to include homeschoolers. This outcome is seen as a victory for homeschooling rights in California. HSLDA also shared another example of successfully challenging a requirement for accredited diplomas for phlebotomy licenses. The work of HSLDA, CHEA and Family Protection Ministries in California is crucial in defending homeschooling freedoms. Why do homeschool graduates in California face discrimination when applying to colleges or state jobs? Homeschool graduates in California face discrimination when applying to colleges or state jobs because some institutions may not recognize homeschool diplomas as equivalent to traditional high school diplomas. This can create challenges for homeschool graduates who want to pursue higher education or certain careers. However, taking the HiSET exam can help homeschool graduates demonstrate diploma equivalency and potentially overcome this discrimination.
Protecting homeschool freedom starts with protecting families in their homes from unreasonable searches and seizures. HSLDA co-founder Mike Farris joins Jim Mason (HSLDA president) in a discussion on 4th Amendment cases that HSLDA has taken on over the years. Learn why it is important for parents to know their rights, know when and how to respectfully assert them, and when to call HSLDA. “We have information on our website [for parents]. They don't need to be experts [to know homeschool law]. They just need to know the basics. Our attorneys can [handle these situations quickly]. Other attorneys could figure it out in due course, but it's expensive, and it would take them a while. HSLDA's ability to turn it around rapidly is because this is our expertise.”—Mike Farris

Does this sound familiar? You've been told to simply trust that the school system has your child's mental well-being covered. But what happens when that trust results in your child feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or lost in the education system? The pain of watching your child struggle while being told to just wait it out can be unbearable. It's time to take action and discover effective strategies to support your child's mental health in the school system, so they can thrive academically and emotionally. In this episode my guest, Katie J. Trent, shares why she is a passionate advocate for children's mental health in the school system. With a background in counseling and ministry, Katie brings a wealth of experience and insight to the challenges children face today. Having worked as an elementary school counselor, she witnessed firsthand the impact of the highly politicized agenda on children's well-being. Katie is dedicated to empowering parents with the knowledge and tools to navigate these challenges and create a nurturing environment for their children's mental health. Her new book, "Recipes for a Sweet Child," offers creative and Bible-based activities that foster emotional well-being. With her expertise and genuine care for children, Katie is a trusted resource for parents seeking to support their child's mental health in the school system.
