Ashley Trice and Rob Holbert — co-publishers of Lagniappe, the alt-weekly turned investigative newspaper covering Mobile and Alabama's Gulf Coast — join the Chuck Toddcast to share the origin story of how their independent publication has grown into the region's premier investigative voice. They explain how Lagniappe started as a free paper and has now transitioned to a subscription model behind a paywall, why most newspapers won't even print these days unless they're certain it won't cost them money (and the surprising fact that there's a national shortage of available printers), and how the paper has built its reputation by covering everything from Mobile's local government to scandals in the wealthy parts of town and irresistible animal stories — both of which they say reliably grow audience faster than anything else. Trice and Holbert preview the upcoming Tuberville-Jones gubernatorial race, which they expect to be surprisingly close, and offer a withering assessment of outgoing Governor Kay Ivey's "very inactive" tenure. They walk through the political divide in Alabama where coastal Mobile often feels left out of the conversation, the surprising audience appeal of youth and high school sports coverage, and the looming threat of the Nexstar-Tegna merger gutting even more local newsrooms across the country. The conversation broadens into the practical realities of running a sustainable local newsroom in 2026. Trice and Holbert explain that the public has been trained to expect news for free, that reaching younger audiences now requires aggressive use of social media platforms and video content, and that live events have become an increasingly important revenue stream for papers like theirs. Trice and Holbert observe that small businesses are still reaching out about advertising — proof that print journalism continues to have a market — and close with a fascinating observation about how coastal Southern cities like Mobile tend to be less polarized than the rest of the South, with a genuine sense of community that gets lost in the national conversation about red-state politics. The Chuck ToddCast: Meet the Press

Chuck Todd opens with the morning-after analysis of Indiana's primary results, which he says show Trump still has plenty of juice with his own party — roughly $13 million was spent to influence about 100,000 voters, and the results have created new urgency for Republican-led states across the South to redistrict before the midterms. He notes that being on the wrong side of Trump remains a career-ending move in the GOP, that Thomas Massie's upcoming primary will be a critical test of Trump's intra-party strength, and that Trump has effectively postponed the perception that he's a lame duck — even as the Iran war continues to crater his standing with the broader public. He flags Ohio as setting up to look like a real swing state in 2026, with Vivek Ramaswamy's polarizing style creating an opening for highly-regarded former Ohio Health Director Amy Acton, and notes that Iowa and Ohio could both move back toward genuine battleground status. Hethen walks through his fascinating recent participation in a political crisis simulation premised on the idea that January 6th wasn't an anomaly — three teams (Institutionalists, Nationalists, and Capitalists) competed for power, and the entire exercise revolved around who could get the capitalists on their side, since their core interest was simply enrichment and instability. The most revealing detail: in the simulation, Congress barely existed and had no measurable impact on outcomes, which Chuck argues mirrors reality and exposes the deeper problem facing American democracy. His blunt verdict: America doesn't actually have a polarization problem — it has a Congress problem, because weak legislatures inevitably create strong executives, Trump simply filled the vacuum a broken Congress created, and the looming gerrymandering wars (with at least eight states set to redraw their maps before 2028) will make Congress even less functional and more purely partisan than it already is. Then, Ashley Trice and Rob Holbert — co-publishers of Lagniappe, the alt-weekly turned investigative newspaper covering Mobile and Alabama's Gulf Coast — join the Chuck Toddcast to share the origin story of how their independent publication has grown into the region's premier investigative voice. Finally, Chuck presents his ToddCast Top 5 gubernatorial one-party droughts that are most likely to end in 2026, and answers listeners’ questions in the “Ask Chuck” segment. When you are faced with bad news, how do you react?Often we learn more about our faith in times of deep testing than we do when we are comfortable in church or in our Bible studies. Today, we turn to 2 Chronicles 20, where we read how King Jehoshaphat of Judah handled some serious news, and what we too can learn about putting our eyes on the Lord in times of trouble, and praising Him, even before the answers come!(RAR2026EP13)

On this week's show, Joe and Kobi bring a little extra to the table. The guys dive into the many different styles of boiling crawfish, sharing their favorite methods, hacks for making your boil spicier, and tips on how to get every last bit of meat out the craw. Kobi talks about his first experience riding B.A R.T. (Bay Area Rapid Transit) in San Francisco. Joe shares stories from cooking during training at the National Training Center, located at Fort Irwin in the California. That conversation spins into experimenting in the kitchen, including mushroom-infused salts. To wrap things up, the guys talk about upcoming events and festivals around Louisiana. This episode was recorded in Oakdale, Louisiana.

Weak faith is a serious problem for the believer.Jesus explains it when He explains the parable of the sower in Matthew 13:20-21. He says that a person with weak faith becomes shallow, like a seed on stony places... who hears the word and immediately receives it with joy; yet he has no root in himself, but endures only for a while. For when tribulation or persecution arises because of the word, immediately he stumbles. That's why it is critical that our faith can withstand testing. Trials deepen our faith, test our resolve, and grow our endurance. And that endurance develops our character as individuals and as believers.Join me for this practical, special lagniappe edition as we explore why God allows our faith to be tested, the difference between tests and temptations, and how we can endure both to the glory of God!(RAR2026EP12)

This week I felt like I was using a ladle to try to save the Titanic.I wish I were exaggerating. But so many of my people are struggling in serious ways, and I spend so much time, feeling like I juggle from encouraging this one, to that one, to this one, and I am really NOT helping anyone. And then the Lord spoke to me, so clearly, so directly, through His Word, in Psalm 27:13-14 -I would have lost heart, unless I had believed that I would see the goodness of the Lord in the land of the living. Wait on the Lord; Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!In this episode, I offer a message of encouragement if you feel like you are drowning, like I did this week! Take heart, God is faithful, and you WILL see the goodness of the Lord in this life! (RAR2026EP09)

Steve stops by the Gumbo Pot to chat about some exciting crowdfunding news. His new publishing company, PIPNETIC GAMES, is heading to Kickstarter on February 23 for his latest book of games. This one is called Dr. Finn's Book of 2-Player Strategy and Word Games, which has FIVE different strategy games and THREE more word games, each for two players! And the kicker? You don't need dice or anything else except a writing implement to play these games right out of the book.  Go to www.doctorfinnsgames.com and click on the Kickstarter link to get more information. Why God? Why Me? Why?We may have grappled with these questions at some point in our lives as believers, and we are in good company. Many great men in the Bible have asked the question why. David, Moses, Habakkuk, Job, the disciples, and even Jesus Himself asked the question "Why God?"The real issue is - what is God's answer to the question "why?" I think we may be surprised! In this special lagniappe edition, I explore what God says when His people ask Him why, and what we, too, can learn when we seek understanding in times of suffering.(RAR2026EP05)

While doing a brief cardio workout with weight may make sense, in order to build strength, it certainly would NOT make sense to run a marathon with weights on our hands and legs.  In fact, long-distance runners need to run as unencumbered as possible. And the same is true for us as believers.  We need to set aside EVERY single weight that might hinder us in our race with Christ.Hebrews 12:1-3:Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking unto Jesus, the [a]author and [b]finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.A believer needs to do three specific things to run effectively:1- lay aside every weight and sin that ensnares,2- run with endurance, and3- look unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith!Join me for a special episode that explores how we have fresh eyes for our race with Christ!(RAR2026EP01)
