Several European cities are exploring ways to manage the level of tourism they're seeing. Locals are starting to turn on visitors - there were angered protestors spraying tourists with water pistols in Barcelona this week, and places like Venice have added a tax to limit the amount of people that can visit the city daily. For a positive spin, the city of Copenhagen is now going to reward tourists who take part in climate-friendly tasks when they holiday there. They'll get things like free lunches, coffees, glasses of wine and kayak rental in return for things like litter picking and using public transport.Should we be doing the same? Andrea is joined by Travel Journalist Ed Flynn, Gwen Leyden, Landlord of George's Street Arcade and Melanie May ‘Talk Travel' Presenter on Dublin City FM to discuss.

In this episode of Doing the Opposite: Business Disruptors, Jeff Dewing speaks to Doug D Gordon, CEO of D&S Performance Optimisation - a training, consulting and coaching company. He speaks internationally on stage and has a radio show on Dublin City FM called Inspirational People.Doug's story is one of transformation from a life marred by stress-induced health issues to becoming a beacon of hope and resilience. Doug explains how he was a board director at Fidelity, one of the largest investment fund managers in Europe, during the 2008 financial crash. The resulting stress, partly as a result of having to lay off so many workers, impacted heavily on Doug's health ultimately leading to a near death experience.Doug talks about the relationship between consciousness and success, where consciousness comprises emotional intelligence, self-awareness, situational awareness, people awareness, social skills and effective communication. He also emphasises the need to understand your teams and the relationships therein; “I always break the ‘relationship' word down into ‘relay' in terms of conscious communication, your ‘tions', your expectations, your intentions, your motivations, then make sure that everybody's on the ‘ship' traveling in the right direction”.Doug and Jeff discuss how to approach difficult conversations with your team, and how to get the most out of them. Doug highlights that to be a good leader, you need to be a good listener. Often the most intelligent person in the room, is the person who listens the most! They also discuss purpose – learn how to discover yours by working to enhance the lives of others, through whatever your organisation offers. Doug's book ‘Charge yourself up for success: Energizing your life, work and relationships' is available now. We premiere new music from Irish pair Blimp & mild who feature their debut collaboration on mild's ‘tapewinter EP'. ‘how i feel' is a warm house groove that features bouncing synth lines, rolling bass rhythms and textured percussion hits that reference early lo-fi house. New music from an exciting collaboration as up & coming house music producers Blimp & mild join forces for the first time as part of mild's ‘tapewinter EP'. mild discovered Blimp's music through reading a feature a new piece on a previous project with FAXE ON FAXE on Four Four Magazine, so it seemed like the perfect fit to feature their collaboration on the site. James Donnelly better known as mild,' is a 22-year-old producer living in Belfast. The young producer has garnered a name for himself from producing high-grade house music that is both characterised as deep and textured. Sound design is at the forefront of the mild project he aims to create a whirlpool of intricate sounds that take listeners to another place. He has seen support from Hot Press magazine in their On Our Radar section, as well as attention from Stereofox and Nialler9. BBC Radio Ulster and Dublin City FM have also given their support to mild. Shane Smyth, aka ‘Blimp,' is a Dublin-based producer who is quickly carving a name for himself as a top-shelf producer, boasting a number of accolades including surpassing a landmark goal of 30k monthly listeners on Spotify with his track ‘Real,' featuring Good Luck. He has also received support from BBC Radio 1 Dance, Dublin City FM, and RTE digital radio. The young producer has seen industry stalwarts TSHA and Kareem Ali backing his music, which is a sign of a young producer with a bright future ahead. We premiere the pair's debut collaboration on ‘how i feel'. The pair are going against the grain as they showcase a piece of vintage style lo-fi house, that hasn't been on display in recent years. Bubbling synth chords trickle through the cracks of layered percussion grooves, both referencing dusty lo-fi house and the more modern bass-heavy house music sounds that arriving from the UK. Soulful vocals are the real star of the show here, creating a track that is suited to the dancefloor and the chill-out area. A lush collaboration from two artists on the rise. This is a special bonus episode of the podcast. Back in 2017 Niall McCormack and Dr Ciarán Swan curated the Green Sleeves exhibition in the National Print Museum. “This exhibition examines the Irish-printed album cover. Included album covers were all designed or printed in Ireland. The work was completed for Irish groups, who worked at home or abroad, as well as albums from abroad referencing Ireland or Irishness. The collection dates from the late 1950s to the present day, and covers a wide range of musical and non-musical genres.” Niall and Ciarán joined me for Episode 675 of my radio show Songs To Learn And Sing for a wide-ranging chat about printing in Dublin, the evolution of design, the Showbands, Country & Irish, the Dutch graphic designers who came to Ireland in the post-war era, Irish Punk, Indie releases in the 80s, Celtic design, designers Diana O'Donnell, Steve Averill and Jim Fitzpatrick, contemporary design and much more. We discussed the design of loads of albums that were featured in their exhibition – albums by Clannad, Thin Lizzy, Horslips, The Stars of Heaven, Microdisney, Gavin Friday, Donnacha Costello and loads of others. This interview was originally broadcast on Dublin City FM on 23 August 2017.
It's the pod you've all been waiting for... That's right, it's Before The ENCORE and it's the final episode of 2022! I couldn't think of anyone better to share the stage with this month than my first visual-based guest in the music industry, Ruth Medjber. Ruth is a household name when it comes to music photography in Ireland and abroad, having toured with homegrown hero Hozier and Arcade Fire, covered Glastonbury Festival in 2022 for the BBC, as well as being published in internationally renowned music publications such as Kerrang!, NME & Rolling Stone. We speak about the linkage between audio and visual and the importance of that in a modern world, finding your tribe and how important that is for your creative stimulation, and her new radio show Spotlight on Dublin City FM; a showcase of Irish artists which also features some live performances, something that I feel has certainly disappeared on radio in more recent years. Thanks to all the BTE listeners for your incredible support this year, I'm so grateful for all of it and I hope to bring you an even better music industry deep-dive experience in 2023. -Sonic Architect Adam Get bonus content on Patreon Hosted on Acast. In this episode you'll learn how the rapid progression of cutting edge technology is changing how people socialise and therefore how, what, where and when they drink. Will and Foxy have plenty of opinions on this topic as they reflect on the "constant change" in our interactions with tech and drink, from the historical to the next wave. But to get a better informed perspective we share a discussion that Will was part of for the Persuaders Media & Marketing radio programme on Dublin City FM recently. There Alex Gibson (TU Dublin Head of Digital Marketing) and Ben Finnegan (Head of eSports and Gaming at EPIC Global & host of TBD podcast) help tease out the issues that range from the frivolous to the fundamental for our industry. On our first visit back to our desert island in a couple of months, we talk to Dhavall Gandhi a Whiskey Master Blender whose talent is only matched by his determination to follow his dreams and carve out a career in an "uber-niche" pursuit. Doug Gordon is dubbed by Ireland's national newspaper as the "Big City Hitter" for his success in the financial world. In this episode of the Internal Leverage podcast, we will get to know Doug more and glean lessons from his transformational journey: how he grew a business from $50 million in revenue to $1.75 billion per annum sales and falling into ill health and a near-death experience, which woke him up to his spiritual nature and how he works with his clients to help them optimize their mindset, energy, and performance. Essential points covered in this episode: ✔️ Understand why energy is everything. People talk about productivity and time management, but according to Doug Gordon, the most important thing is getting into your optimal state of energy. You will get more done in less time with less stress. Start with a positive thought, and you will achieve an energy-positive destiny. ✔️ The power of your voice is so important because we all have something to communicate with the world. We all come down here with a mission. The fundamental aim in life is to find that true purpose, to connect with your true self, to connect for higher meaning, and go out and live that for others. Be able to communicate what your product or service does and how it makes the customer have a better life. Doing so allows you to collectively collaborate as a team and achieve a real sense of purpose rather than just the need to work for a living. ✔️ Learn to put your thinking C.A.P. on — C is for "creating" vision and a plan, "communicating" that vision with other people to make a "connection" and order to "collaborate" with them in a community manner. A is for "aligning" your mission with other people and having the "awareness" of where you are and what you're looking to "achieve" as a team. P is for purpose and also for passion. It's all about enthusiasm and energy. When you love what you do and love for the people around you, your love for your product or service, and a love for the clients you're dealing with, I would say love is an acronym for lots of vibrant energy. You will create more efficient productivity, better time management, and a more enjoyable, loving job and loving organization. ✔️ The greatest gift you can give another person is your presence. And that's why they call it the "present moment." And if you can really listen and give them two ears and actively be attentive to what they say, as people tend to try to outdo others and impress them. If you can provide them that ear, listen to what they need, and help them get what they need, you create a connection — an authentic connection.
