I am very excited to bring on Dr. Tamara O'Doherty of Simon Fraser University's School of Criminology. SFU is my alma mater and is the #1 school in the nation (Canada) for Criminology so I was super stoked to invite Tamara onto the show to share her expertise, research and findings on the topic at-hand this week. As sex workers, we are are deeply affected by the anti-human trafficking laws the were enacted by governments around the world. We've mentioned this particular topic a countless number of times on the podcast and it continues to be brought up due to its negative impact on sex workers. In Canada, Tamara and I speak about Bill-36 which was enacted in 2014 by Stephen Harper and the Conservative government, dissecting on how confusing the verbatim and title were as well as the political agenda behind it. On a parallel note, we discuss the USA's SOSTA/FESTA which was enacted in 2016 by the Trump administration (and even earlier by the Bush administration) and the cuts it has made on the sex industry. In addition to this, we speak briefly about the Nordic model or "asymmetrical criminalization" of sex work and what that means for sex workers. As a former graduate of SFU's School of Criminology, I value Tamara's expert opinion, research and advocacy on the topic. I will be guest lecturing in her class on April 5th, 2021 - stay tuned for a future bonus episode! Lord Atkin's first encounter with a doctor was in 1867, when Dr Kevin O'Doherty attended his birth in Brisbane. Twenty years earlier O'Doherty had been transported to Tasmania for his advocacy of Irish nationalism. By 1867 he was a leading surgeon in Brisbane, and, like his friend Robert Atkin, an advocate of liberal democracy. He was one of the first presidents of the Queensland Medical Society and carried out extensive honorary work at Catholic hospitals. As an MP he introduced Queensland's first Public Health Act, championed the improvement of public health and as an opponent of the traffic in Kanakas sponsored the bill to stop their recruitment. He was a member of Queensland's Parliament until 1886 when he returned to Ireland and was elected to the House of Commons in that country. Soon after that, political differences in Dublin led him to return to Brisbane.Learn more about this lecture on the Supreme Court Library Queensland website, https://legalheritage.sclqld.org.au/2018-lecture-threeSupport the show (https://legalheritage.sclqld.org.au/membership-information)

Will Forte never met Mike Ahern or Enda Loughman before jumping on board the pair of Irish director's debut feature. He didn't need to. The script for Extra Ordinary was just that good. All he needed to know was that they'd be directing. Why? Because according to Forte, in comedy, writing and directing go hand in hand. In that respect, writing and acting may go hand in hand as well. While Forte and scene partner Claudia O'Doherty may bring some star power to the project, it's the relatively unknown comedian Maeve Higgins who truly carries the brunt of the project on her shoulders. And as we learned in this interview, she had a hand in writing the film as well. Higgins plays Rose, a sweet, lonely driving instructor in rural Ireland, who is gifted with supernatural abilities. Rose has a love/hate relationship with her 'talents' & tries to ignore the constant spirit requests from locals - to exorcize possessed rubbish bins or haunted gravel. Forte plays a washed-up pop star/satanist in his usual outlandish manner, O'Doherty his indifferent wife. Also joining us on the show is actor Barry Ward, Roses' love interest in the film. We sat down after the film's premiere at SXSW to discuss trusting actors to write, the advantages of comedy jamming with directors and "funnying" your way out of any problematic situations.

When someone lives in a state of gratitude the vibration they give off is contagious. Listen to Jen's conversation with Stand Up Paddle racer, yogi, and water woman Evelyn O'Doherty and be inspired! Mahalo.
Standup Journal's new Online Editor joins Erik on the podcast. Evelyn O'Doherty is a former school teacher gone rogue. Her transformation happened when she learned to surf. After the bug bit, she was no longer able to be contained to the walls of a classroom, so Ev followed her instincts to recreate herself and left a successful career of teaching in order to spend more time on the water. Today, she is a stand up paddle racer, surfer and yoga teacher. She instructs and offers retreats around the world in order to inspire others to follow their passions, live their dreams and, she hopes, spend more time on the water. Evelyn believes wholeheartedly that we will protect what we love; therefore, her on-the-water coaching includes special attention to the state of our waterways and oceans in order to inspire her students to become stewards for the planet and take care of each other and the ocean so that we may live and respect in it's presence for a long time to come. Father Liam and ICNY Podcast Producer Maggi Van Dorn In this episode of our free podcast series “NYC Faith Leaders,” Maggi Van Dorn talks with Father Liam O'Doherty, an Augustinian friar and Catholic priest, currently of Our Mother of Good Counsel Parish in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania, and formerly of Our Lady of Good Counsel Parish in Staten Island. Fr. Liam served 18 years as a missionary in Nagoya & Nagasaki, Japan, where he ministered to the descendents of Japan's first Catholic martyrs. He is renown in Staten Island for his interfaith work in bringing together the Roman Catholic and Muslim communities around shared social justice concerns. And Fr. Liam is also credited with arranging New York City Cardinal Dolan’s first visit to a mosque. On Muslim Neighbors: [When I see Muslims pray, I see] that what they have in their hearts is the same thing that I have in my heart - a deep desire to praise God, and to have a relationship with Him. And the thing that comes out of that is a desire to support each other in their walk of faith, and also to do something for the people outside of the community.” On singing as embodied prayer: “When you sing, your body becomes a musical instrument … it’s incarnational.” On how to Be a Priest/Faith leader: “Show up, be there, and don't get in the way of the action of the Holy Spirit."
