Penn State dominates the trenches but gives up big playsPenn State's offense got the ball rolling early by generating chunk plays on the ground. The team had 194 yards of offense in the first half and 141 of those came on the ground. The Lions put together two long scoring drives to control the flow. However, the star of the game in the trenches was injured star Abdul Carter. The pass rusher lined up opposite of his normal position to play with his good shoulder to the inside of the line. He tallied a sack and two TFLs in the first half. But it wasn't enough. The Penn State offense went silent in the third quarter, with just 25 total yards to Notre Dame's 128. Notre Dame took the lead in the early fourth quarter with a Jerimiyah Love scoring from inside the five yard line. Penn State bounced back with a scoring drive of its own, but the Irish continued to churn yards on the ground and mix in passes from quarterback Riley Leonard. Despite two interceptions, Leonard threw a touchdown over Cam Miller, who fell over in coverage, allowing a late fourth-quarter score and a field goal drive to lose the game after the Penn State offense went three and out with four minutes left. Postgame contentAfter the show, stay put for Penn State head coach James Franklin's postgame press conference. The Nittany Lions leader will address the media following the loss. Penn State gets the job doneIt wasn't perfect, but Penn State dominated Boise State in enough facets of the game to get the win. The Lions did what most thought was impossible and kept Ashton Jeanty contained for the entirety of the Fiesta Bowl. The superstar tailback managed only 96 yards on 24 carries before Penn State put the game out of reach in the fourth quarter. The team did it without star linebacker Abdul Carter, who went down with a shoulder injury in the first quarter and did not return. Overall, the team racked up eight tackles for loss to keep Jeanty contained before he got going.Offensively, Penn State used another strong game from Kaytron Allen and Nick Singleton to power the win. Allen was his typical gritty self, grinding out 15 carries for 131 yards. Singleton contributed a 58-yard touchdown to seal the game. Penn State takes care of SMU by forcing mistakesIn the Big Ten Championship game, Penn State was the team that made mistakes and turned the ball over. The script flipped on Saturday in the win over SMU. The defense forced three first-half turnovers on interceptions of Kevin Jennings, two of which were returned for touchdowns. Linebackers Dom DeLuca and Tony Rojas fueled a 28-0 first-half surge from the Nittany Lions that put the game out of reach. The Penn State offense had another sluggish and uneven performance. However, they did enough to complement the defense in the win. The ground game got going with a 25-yard touchdown run by Kaytron Allen in the first half. Overall, it was still a quiet day for the running backs, who failed to crack 100 yards on the day. More postgame contentJoin us for more reaction from Beaver Stadium after the win. Penn State doesn't get it done vs. Top Five Team Penn State's defense could not have gotten off to a worse start against Oregon. The Nittany Lions' normally stout front was gashed on the first two drives as Oregon rushed out to an explosive lead. Oregon's speed was too much for the team as they got their explosive athletes into space and raced out to 31 points in the first half, including an 11-point lead early in the second quarter. But from there, the Penn State offense came roaring back. Unlike previous big games, the offense was the side of the football that held the line for the Nittany Lions, going toe-to-toe with the Ducks and scoring 24 points before halftime. However, Oregon's explosiveness was too much for the Penn State defense. The Ducks passing attack went off with electric slot receiver Tez Johnson going for 181 yards in the game. Allar threw an interception with under two minutes left in the game to seal the game for the Ducks. What's next for the Nittany Lions? Penn State will await its fate on Sunday afternoon to find out its seeding in the first round of the inaugural 12-team playoff.
