Margery Kraus is the Founder and Executive Chairman of APCO Worldwide, a company she started in 1984 as a small subsidiary of a Washington, D.C. law firm and built into a global consultancy with roughly 1,200 people across 35 locations. Her story, though, starts much earlier. The child of immigrants whose family fled Nazi Europe, passed through Cuba and eventually rebuilt their lives in America, Margery grew up around resilience, risk and starting again. We talk about how that shaped the entrepreneur she became, why she refused to listen when people told her “you can't do that,” and what it was really like building a global company while raising a family. We also get into the 2004 management buyout that helped make APCO one of the world's largest majority women-owned consulting firms, how you step back from leading a company you built without really letting go, and what four decades advising some of the world's most influential leaders have taught her about who thrives under pressure and who doesn't.Recorded in Dalian, China, during the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions, we also look at the world right now: China's place in the global economy, shifting trade relationships and what the rest of the world may be getting wrong about this moment. And then there's AI. Margery says it's the thing that keeps her up at night. For someone who has built a career and a business around human trust, judgment and relationships, I wanted to know why.A fascinating conversation with someone who has spent more than 40 years building, adapting and refusing to stand still.Special thanks to the World Economic Forum for bringing us together in Dalian.
Global foreign direct investment rebounded by 14% to $1.6 trillion in 2025, yet the gains remained heavily concentrated in advanced economies, widening the gap with the emerging markets expected to drive the majority of growth in the coming decades. Young populations, rapid digital adoption and expanding consumer bases give emerging economies significant structural advantages, but capital, technology and industrial capacity continue to flow elsewhere. As competitiveness gaps widen, what is separating the front-runners from the laggards, and where will the next engines of growth emerge? Mazen S. Darwazeh is the Executive Chairman and Deputy Chief Executive Officer of Hikma Pharmaceuticals, and a Jordanian senator currently serving his fifth term. His journey with Hikma began in 1985 as a medical representative.Over the next four decades, he rose through the company to lead its MENA business and help shape Hikma into the largest pharmaceutical company by sales in the region and a FTSE 100 multinational employing around 9,500 people across three continents.Recorded in Dalian, China, this conversation was made possible thanks to the World Economic Forum, who facilitated the episode during the Annual Meeting of the New Champions. On this episode, we talk about what it takes to preserve the values of a family-built company as it becomes a global institution, Hikma's ambitions for healthcare in the Middle East, the growing role of biosimilars and biotechnology, and the challenge of ensuring access to essential medicines in a region shaped by geopolitical uncertainty. We also discuss China's evolving role in the pharmaceutical industry, Mazen's perspective from both business and public service, and what four decades in healthcare have taught him about leadership, longevity and building something that lasts.

Food security has emerged as a critical challenge, defined by access to sufficient, safe and nutritious food. As AI becomes a new frontier in food systems, with applications ranging from accelerating ingredient discovery to enabling precision agriculture, the gap between pilot initiatives and large-scale deployment remains substantial, particularly in Asia-Pacific where the majority of the world's food is produced and consumed. With food security at stake, what will it take to move from isolated pilots to true systemic transformation? "Polycrisis" was a term coined to describe the convergence of multiple global challenges: political polarisation, conflicts, and the breakdown of post-World War Two norms on issues such as trade and security. Yuen Yuen Ang, a political science professor at Johns Hopkins University, says polycrisis was a useful way of framing the problem, but to find solutions we should consider the global "polytunity". Is 2026 the year it all changed for energy? The Strait of Hormuz closure was "the largest oil supply disruption in history" but has not (yet) brought the global economy to its knees. But are we now living in a post-Hormuz world where countries and companies are seeking to diversify energy supply and ramp up renewables? Jason Bordoff of the Center on Global Energy Policy and the Columbia Energy Exchange podcast returns to Radio Davos, at the Forum's 'Summer Davos' in China, for an update on the global energy situation. This week on Sinica, in a special episode recorded at the Davos On Air booth at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Dalian, I sat down with Angela Huyue Zhang, professor of law at USC's Gould School of Law and author of High Wire: How China Regulates Big Tech and Governs Its Economy, and S. Alex Yang, professor of management science and operations at London Business School. Angela and Alex — who are also married, and who arrived at this collaboration from opposite ends of the academy — have developed what I think is one of the most useful new mental models for understanding China's political economy: the platform state. Their argument is that we should think of the Chinese state less as a central planner or owner and more as a platform company like NVIDIA or Apple, one that builds architecture, sets standards, and governs an ecosystem within which fiercely competitive private firms fight it out. Value accrues at the system level rather than as firm profit, and the payoff may decide who wins the race to put AI to work across an entire economy.5:37 – Three puzzles the framework is built to solve: profitless dominance in solar, EVs, and batteries; why the "grabbing hand" hasn't strangled Chinese innovation; and how China is attempting both zero-to-one invention and one-to-hundred scaling at once7:57 – The platform state thesis: why the Chinese government behaves like a platform company, how nurturing an ecosystem of private firms solves the information deficit that cripples command-and-control, and why over-entry, involution, and consolidation are a repeated pattern — from EVs to the 140-plus humanoid robot companies operating today16:13 – The aha moment: how a paper on the legal infrastructure of physical AI became the platform state idea over the Zhang-Yang dinner table, and whether this is a new species of political economy or the East Asian developmental state in new clothes20:44 – State conditions: why state capacity and domestic scale are the two preconditions for the model, and why an ambitious Vietnam — which has the top-down capacity — may still find the Chinese playbook impossible to replicate23:39 – Profitless dominance by design: harvesting versus extracting, the Uber analogy, overshooting as a control-theory strategy for nudging sectors, and how the anti-involution campaign and the 60-day supplier payment mandate show the state moderating the very competition it engineered30:33 – Organized chaos: from the bike-sharing graveyards of the O2O wars to today's disciplined market, the exit of more than 400 EV makers since 2018, and why the survivors of China's "Premier League" of competition are now turning profitable32:59 – The 3Gs playbook: growing markets by solving the cold-start problem, from Liuzhou's EV test drives to Beijing's green license plates, and how subsidy is only one lever among many38:36 – Governing the ecosystem like Apple runs its App Store: why Beijing regulates generative AI with a light touch but physical AI is a different species entirely, law as the sixth layer of the AI stack, why robotaxis scale faster in China than in the U.S., and the state-convened standard-setting that's driving down humanoid robot costs46:54 – Two flywheels: the familiar data-and-cost flywheel and the deeper state capacity flywheel, and how the National AI Fund's small but voting stake in DeepSeek aligns a complementor with the domestic stack — tilting the ecosystem toward Chinese chips53:28 – Guarding the moat: automotive data rules and Tesla's stalled FSD ambitions, the unwound Manus sale, China's own small yard and high fence, and the closing provocation — that America could build the smartest frontier models and still lose the diffusion race to "artificial good-enough intelligence." Plus: the case for coopetition, and what policymakers should (and shouldn't) borrow from the platform stateLinks from the episodeAngela's paper on law as the sixth layer of China's AI stack:The Sixth Layer: The Legal Infrastructure for Physical Artificial Intelligence in China (SSRN)Three Project Syndicate op-eds on the platform state idea:The Rise of the Chinese Platform State by S. https://www.siegergolf.com/offers/BaAEYBog/checkout What really separates today's golfing champions from the legends of the past? Is it technology? Better coaching? Superior equipment? Or is the answer far more powerful than that? This week on The Golfing Mind, we're diving into the mindset of the modern champion and exploring why today's best players seem better equipped than ever to handle the relentless pressure of elite golf. They're stronger, fitter, and more athletic, but it's what's happening between their ears that fascinates me most. They make smarter decisions, recover faster from mistakes, refuse to panic when momentum shifts, and have an extraordinary ability to stay locked into the present moment—one shot, one target, one challenge at a time. We'll examine how physical conditioning, emotional resilience, disciplined routines, and world-class decision-making have transformed the game, and why these qualities are now every bit as important as a beautiful golf swing. Most importantly, you'll discover practical lessons that every club golfer can apply immediately. Because while you may never hit the ball like the world's best, you can certainly learn to think like them. Learn more about your ad choices. Visit megaphone.fm/adchoices
Recorded live from the Davos on Air booth at the World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions in Dalian, this special episode of Sinica tackles the "pacing problem": the widening gap between how fast AI moves and how slowly regulation can catch up. I sit down with Xue Lan, dean of Schwarzman College at Tsinghua University and one of the architects of China's concept of "agile governance," to unpack what that term means in practice. He traces China's regulatory evolution from the 2017 AI plan through the generative AI rules and the 2021 tech crackdown, compare Chinese, American, and European approaches, and ask whether Beijing's adaptive style can travel to other political systems — including liberal democracies.00:09 – Live from Dalian: the “pacing problem” and why AI has turned it into a chasm03:18 – Introducing Xue Lan, dean of Schwarzman College and architect of “agile governance”04:34 – Why AI's pace makes it uniquely hard to regulate06:01 – Defining agile governance: mindset, partnership over adversary, and light-touch tools11:54 – From the 2017 AI plan to today: China's two-track approach to tech and governance20:07 – Balancing development and security amid the US-China AI race23:24 – Revisiting the 2021 tech crackdown: failure of the model, or agility of a different kind?26:14 – The “DeepSeek moment,” open-weight models, and regulatory uncertainty by design37:10 – EU comprehensiveness vs. US patchwork vs. China's modular, adaptive approach46:59 – Can agile governance travel to liberal democracies? In an era marked by rapid global economic shifts and rising uncertainties, the concept of "China Opportunity 2.0" has emerged as a symbol of new possibilities for international trade and innovation. While some China doomsters have expressed "anxiety" over China's advances in technology and industrial innovation, even promoting the narrative of a so-called "China Shock 2.0" that groundlessly frames China's development as a "threat" to the global economy, the reality is that "China Opportunity 2.0", as Chinese Premier Li Qiang said last week, represents comprehensive innovation-driven empowerment and high-return investment prospects. Speaking at the 17th Annual Meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum in Northeast China's coastal city of Dalian, Li underscored China's potential to offer high-return investment prospects and its fostering of mutually beneficial technological collaboration worldwide. The ongoing visit to China of David Eby, premier of Canada's British Columbia province, serves as a testament to the substantive appeal of "China Opportunity 2.0". Eby has stressed that the purpose of his trip is to strengthen British Columbia's ties with China as a strategic move to diversify the province's trade relationships. We're seeking to reduce our reliance on the United States and obviously, Asian markets have been a major focus for us," Eby told the media last week before embarking on his first China trip on Saturday. This includes the goal of doubling trade to non-US markets within the next 10 years. "China will be part of that," he added. By targeting key sectors such as forestry products, energy — specifically liquefied natural gas development — and tourism, he is seeking to unlock new avenues for growth and job creation in British Columbia. This aligns with the principles of "China Opportunity 2.0", which emphasizes mutual benefits and shared development. The visit follows Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney's trip to China earlier this year, the first by a Canadian prime minister in eight years. Carney's visit laid the groundwork for the healthy development of China-Canada relations, with multiple cooperation agreements signed across trade, customs, energy, construction, culture and public security. Eby's trip builds on this momentum, signaling a proactive approach to deepening collaboration and exploring innovative opportunities. According to Canadian media, his itinerary includes Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou. The strategic sectors targeted for collaboration are indicative of a balanced approach that prioritizes mutual benefits and sustainable growth. China-Canada relations have experienced ups and downs in recent years, but there are no territorial disputes or clash of fundamental interests between the two countries, and they can become partners for achieving mutual success. This year marks the 56th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Canada, as well as the 21st anniversary of the establishment of their strategic partnership. It is an important chance to reflect on the past and think about the future. Eby's visit shows that an objective and rational attitude toward China is conducive to strengthening cooperation with a positive and open spirit. Reinforcing this, Canada's Minister of International Trade Maninder Sidhu recently revealed in a media interview that he plans to meet with his Chinese counterpart this fall. Although certain Western policymakers have been drawn into the rhetorical vortex of a purported "China Shock 2.0", the evolving arc of China-Canada ties points to the emergence of a countervailing cohort of countries that chooses to assess the situation objectively and remains open to the considerable potential of "China Opportunity 2.0". As Li put it in his speech at last week's Summer Davos, to overcome the global growth challenge, innovation-driven cooperation is imperative. To this end, countries should forge closer connectivity and collaboration by joining forces and pooling resources to innovate. China possesses a complete industrial system and well-integrated industry clusters, which underpin efficient, reliable production and supply chains for businesses worldwide. By rejecting the notion of a "China Shock 2.0", countries stand to capture the vast opportunities presented by China's dynamic economy and superlarge market. innovation /ˌɪnəˈveɪʃn/n.

As political and business leaders gather in Dalian, Liaoning province, for the 17th Annual Meeting of the New Champions of the World Economic Forum, global attention is turning to how China will use the event to reinforce its role in championing stable growth and practical cooperation at a time of mounting global economic uncertainty. Premier Li Qiang underscored China's commitment to strengthening cooperation with various countries in emerging sectors and enhancing development synergy, as he held a series of bilateral meetings with heads of government on Tuesday on the sidelines of the event, also known as the Summer Davos forum. The Annual Meeting of the New Champions, also known as Summer Davos, is underway in Dalian, northeast China, gathering more than 1,700 global business leaders (01:02). Iran says it will continue its peace talks with the United States following the discussions in Switzerland over the weekend (09:10). Andy Burnham has been sworn in as Labour Member of Parliament in Britain, a step closer to his goal to become the new prime minister (20:05).
Business and finance news from the Asia-Pacific. The US issued a 60-day license allowing Iran to sell oil on the international market, giving Tehran an economic lifeline as the two adversaries continued talks for a permanent peace deal. Vice President JD Vance, attending the discussions in Switzerland, described the first round of negotiations as "very, very good" and said Iran had agreed to allow nuclear inspectors back into the country — a claim later backed up by President Donald Trump. But Iranian officials, who also cited progress, challenged that claim, saying Vance's assertion was "false and does not reflect reality." For a closer look at what is going on in the oil market, we speak to Stephen Stapczynski, Bloomberg's Asia Energy Team Leader. Plus - The World Economic Forum's Annual Meeting of the New Champions, often known as "Summer Davos", will be held this week in the Chinese port city of Dalian. This year's theme is "Innovating at Scale" and will bring together global leaders from government, business and academia, along with innovators and representatives from international organizations, media and civil society. What's the latest on Cal and JP's returns and will our lineup be healthy by the start of the homestand tomorrow? See omnystudio.com/listener for privacy information.
