Gruden's emails, an impending NFL legal disaster & 3 teams we're worried about

Play Episode Listen Later Oct 14, 2021 69:14

Everyone knows the headline by now. On Monday evening, after a plethora of disgusting & offensive emails were leaked, first by the Wall Street Journal, and later by the New York Times, Las Vegas Raiders head coach Jon Gruden abruptly resigned, likely never to hold a significant position in or around the NFL ever again.Charles Robinson is joined by NBC's Michael Smith to discuss the aftermath of this seismic blow to one of the league's most storied franchises and iconic coaches. A few questions still linger: if the Raiders received these emails on Friday, why was this information sat on until the Times leaked it? What league figures could be implicated in future leaks?Charles & Michael discuss those issues as well as one more: why the NFL should be scared about how these email leaks may play into its ongoing legal troubles in St. Louis & Oakland after the Rams & Raiders respectively left town.Later in the show, the guys talk about ESPN adding a wild card game to their Monday Night Football slate & Michael's unhealthy Madden obsession. In the second half, Charles & Michael break down the three teams they're worried about most in the NFL & as well as the one NFC team every other squad should be afraid of in January. By now, we've all seen the video of Urban Meyer getting cozy with a woman at his bar in Ohio, the night after his Jacksonville Jaguars suffered a Thursday night loss to the Cincinnati Bengals. It's not great. Even worse, Meyer spent the following days sheepishly apologizing for his behavior, invoking his grandchildren, making comparisons to Trevor Lawrence's bachelor party. Overall, it was not a good look — and the 31 other teams in the NFL absolutely loved it.Charles Robinson is joined by none other than Yahoo's Dan Wetzel this week to break down why this is such an unforced embarrassment by the football's king of moralizing: Urban Meyer.Later in the podcast, Charles & Dan react to the Wednesday morning news of the New England Patriots sending former defensive player of the year Stephon Gilmore to the Carolina Panthers, who are clearly going all-in on an already stout defense. They also discuss the Dallas Cowboys parting ways with linebacker Jaylon Smith. To wrap up the show, the guys preview the Buffalo Bills & Kansas City Chiefs facing off in an AFC championship rematch, a battle between two up-and-coming teams in the Los Angeles Chargers and Cleveland Browns and if the Arizona Cardinals can pull off their fifth win of the season against the San Francisco 49ers.Stay up to date with the latest NFL news and coverage from Yahoo Sports on Twitter @YahooSportsNFL.Follow Charles @CharlesRobinsonPlease support Terez Paylor's legacy by supporting the Terez A. His man-bun was a symbol of his waning manliness and interest in football!Rodgers had some thoughts for his detractors after a solid eighteen-point win over the Lions on Monday night. Charles Robinson welcomes Dan Wetzel onto the podcast this week to talk about why Rodgers is and isn't right to call his critics, "chickens**t," and the precarious state of the athlete-media relationship.Later in the show, Charles & Dan chat about Tom Brady's upcoming trip to Foxboro, Mass. as the Buccaneers face Brady's old Patriots in a week and a half. Could Brady have won a Super Bowl with this iteration of a Patriots roster? Would New England fans trade a still effective Brady for the next 15 years of Mac Jones' career? In the latter half of the episode, Charles answers a pair of questions about NFL ownership. Having lost to the Washington Football Team, Buffalo Bills and, on Monday night, the lowly Cincinnati Bengals, the Steelers appear in free-fall. What doesn’t help matters is their Week 16 opponents are the Indianapolis Colts who boast the league’s best defense. After briefly touching on the San Francisco 49ers acquiring former tenth overall pick Josh Rosen from the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson kick off the podcast trying to diagnose: what’s wrong with the Pittsburgh Steelers? When the culprits are an aging Ben Roethlisberger, an ineffective offensive line, a defense worn thin by key injuries, the blame can be spread everywhere. JuJu Smith-Schuster losing a fumble after dancing on the Bengals logo for a TikTok video certainly doesn’t help either. (4:10)Later, Terez drops the audio of an interview he conducted earlier in the week with former Bengals wide receiver Chad Johnson (née Ochocinco) where they talk about the state of touchdown celebrations and Chad reveals his rankings of the best wideouts of all time (spoiler: Jerry Rice is third). Terez Paylor is joined by Yahoo Sports senior college football writer Pete Thamel as well as Yahoo Sports' lead draft analyst Eric Edholm to talk about Hurts' interesting college career and what to expect out of his first professional start. (4:30)Later, Pete gives the latest on the sad tale of Jim Harbaugh and the University of Michigan. The former San Francisco 49ers head coach made three conference championships and a Super Bowl, but his stock seemingly couldn't be any lower. Aside from Trevor Lawrence and Justin Fields, what names should NFL fans start paying attention to? Will the Cincinnati Bengals draft some protection for Joe Burrow? What will the Dallas Cowboys do with their likely top-five pick? Could four quarterbacks go in the first ten picks next April? (24:00)Finally, Terez closes out the show taking some listener questions about how Bill Belichick could screw the New York Jets out of the first overall pick, what the Indianapolis Colts will do at QB after the Philip Rivers era and how he would go about fixing the Detroit Lions franchise. Will playoff teams enter an NBA-style playoff bubble?Later in the podcast, they discuss another disappointing loss for the Philadelphia Eagles. What's wrong with Philly & their former MVP-caliber QB Carson Wentz? What happened in the Eagles' 2020 draft war room that almost yielded them both an Offensive Rookie of the Year and a Defensive Rookie of the Year candidate? (20:55)A listener writes in discussing possible landing spots for Detroit Lions QB Matt Stafford, who may be on the trade block after the team fired its coach and GM on Sunday. Tuesday was certainly a day not without excitement in America. The Presidential race is still too close to call as of late Wednesday, but we do know what to call Tuesday's trade deadline in the NFL: boring.Terez Paylor & Charles Robinson open up this midweek podcast reacting to the lack of major moves at the deadline and what it says about where most of the teams are at the season's halfway point.Elsewhere in the league, there were reports this week that the NFL is mulling a 16-team playoff format that would eliminate the bye week and allow eight teams from each conference into the playoffs for one year only. Which teams stand the most to gain from this proposed scenario? (13:10)Terez & Charles then devote the bulk of the episode to giving out their 2020 midseason awards. Is Tom Brady in the MVP conversation with the likes of Russel Wilson and Patrick Mahomes? Does Tua Tagovailoa have a chance to enter the apparent two-man race for offensive rookie of the year behind Joe Burrow and Justin Herbert? Mike Tomlin & Bruce Arians seem like frontrunners for the coach of the year award, but our experts argue that how Antonio Brown gels with the Bucs will ultimately play a huge role in how Arians is evaluated for that award.
