As the world untangles itself from the aftermath of the coronavirus pandemic, there is important healing work to be done. In this episode of The Coach's Journey Podcast, trauma-informed wellbeing and resilience coach Jackee Holder maps out the impact of events on our collective consciousness, and points the way forward for our profession.A true coaching trailblazer, Jackee was among the very first black coaches in the UK and become one of the first black British authors to publish in the self-help genre when she released Soul Purpose in 1999. From earning her degree in government and politics, Jackee moved into youth and community work, where the quality of listening she received from a supervisor altered her perspective on her own career.Preferring to describe herself as “a human who gets to be on purpose” than as a coach, Jackee's work is currently focused on the therapeutic benefits of journaling and expressive writing. This work has taken her into her zone of genius, and she describes the remarkable changes that manifest when we are in alignment with our work.Jackee opens up about her journey to becoming a successful author, leadership coach and coach supervisor, reflecting on the hardships and the breakthroughs that shaped her remarkable life and career. In this episode, Jackee and host Ruth Saville also talk about:· How journaling can be harnessed as a growth process· Moving into coaching without throwing out your old career· How to skilfully navigate how you show up in the world without losing your sense of identity· Ways to amplify the work you do in your own time: your personal reading, learning and podcast consumptionJackee also generously shares advice and guidance to anyone interested in becoming a trauma-informed coach, and suggests key reading that can act as a springboard into this work.

In this prompt, I use Jackee's beautiful writing maps for inspiration. We look at the prompt, 'bark mask' and the directions we could go in in writing using this title. I read the extract from the 'Writing with Fabulous Trees' map and share thoughts on how you might use this in your own writing. Some ideas: 'Writing about ways in which surfaces protect us...about your own or your character's masks, and the importance of surfaces.' (JH) Put the title, 'bark mask' at the top of the page and free write for at least 10 minutes (15-20 minutes if you have it!) on the theme Get outside and put your hands on a tree trunk; or forage a some sticks and see how the textures differ when you are back at home Please do share your writing with me as I love to read your words! I was totally awestruck when I first heard Jackee Holder speak. You could hear a pin drop in the massive room, so compelling was the way she told her story. This generous, kind, beautiful soul refuses to let childhood trauma define her or damage her, but she constantly turns to creativity instinctively to heal. She helps others do this, and find their voices in general as she believes - as I do - that everyone has a story, their story, to tell, and has a right to do this. Jackee's words are like a warm, comforting cup of tea and - while the word 'authentic' is totally overused - it's completely fitting for her. Whether you consider yourself a writer or not, writing is such a fantastic way to process our emotions and make sense of our lives. As she says 'the rough stuff equals the write stuff'. We can, as she does, grow from our hard experiences. If you would like a wee nudge to get writing, or get started, this is the episode for you. Jackee is a London-based executive coach and writer who is really passionate about creativity and journaling and nature and the benefits of practices that include these. In our episode last week we talked a lot about the connection between creativity and nature but we didn't have enough time to chat about how creativity can have a pretty huge impact on our mental health and wellbeing. And I'm so glad we got the chance to do this follow-up episode because we cover so much stuff. You don't particularly need to listen to the episodes in order as we recorded them as 2 separate conversations but if you find the topics in this episode interesting, then you'll definitely want to go back and catch up with last week's episode.  Today, we're talking about the reasons why being creative is so good for us, last week we chatted a lot about how amazing journaling is and here we dive a little deeper into the reasons why it's such a powerful tool for self-care. And other ways a daily creative practice can help support and nourish us in the rest of our lives. Over the next four weeks Gillian Russell and the Personal Best team will be featuring an "Advent Calendar" of festive stresses which will be opened, unpicked and resolved for a happier, healthier Christmas! This week: present-shopping and card-writing. Presents: Mum of two Fiona Pagett talks about the desire to be super-organised versus the reality of being a last-minute shopper and the stresses that brings each year. Life coach and author Jackee Holder explains why we get caught up in habit and obligation at this time of year and how we can recapture the essence of what giving and receiving should be about. Christine Frith, whose company operates a professional gift buying service, shares ideas of how we can put the pleasure back into Christmas shopping. Fiona and Christine explore other methods of keeping in contact at Christmas - phone call, visit, text message - and whether it's ok in the 21st century to use social media for our festive greetings.
