It focused on helping new immigrants in Canada find their feet, get off to a running start and ease their assimilation into Canadian life. A big part of the platform were conversations, community and support. Though the startup stopped growing once Aditya moved to Seattle, WA - it remained alive in the form of several discussion groups and online communities. Now, Diasporaa has been resurrected in the form of a podcast focused on sharing interesting immigrant stories from the South Asian diaspora and uncovering how much we have in common despite our differences. It is available on YouTube, all major podcast platforms such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts, Google Podcasts, etc. and is also broadcast as a radio show on Alternative Talk 1150 AM and 98.9 FM HD Channel 3 on Wednesdays from 2-3pm PST. About Aditya Mehta: Aditya is a Bombay boy who has lived in Austin, Los Angeles, Washington DC, and Vancouver before making it to his current home in Seattle. He has degrees in marketing, urban planning, real estate and strategy but has spent his career in financial services, social media and now real estate - mostly as an entrepreneur and partly as an employee at Amazon. He balances Indian, Canadian and American culture, loves helping those who are new to North America and looks forward to the interesting stories that his interview guests bring each week. When not podcasting, he is helping his wife Prachi build her pharmaceutical business or hanging out with his son Arjun. Being in the real estate business is not all sunshine and rainbows. Often, massive shifts in the market hit when we least expect it. But with the right mindset, knowledge, and innovation, it's possible to get back in the game stronger than ever. In this episode, Donnie Jarreau of Jarreau Real Estate joined me to talk about his journey of overcoming a market recession and onward to managing over $200 million worth of properties. Donnie and I will discuss how to guard your mindset during tough times and find leads beyond your market. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation: Understand why real estate is a numbers game Determine the mindset it takes to overcome a market collapse Find out the importance of knowing market trends Discover the secret behind thriving with a large portfolio Episode Highlights: [07:05] Doing Real Estate Amidst a Market Collapse The more calls and leads you have, the more deals you'll get. You need to understand the continuously changing market trends. Delve into the market and know the returns. You must know what to do with your assets in different situations. It's also critical to have the right team and partnerships. [23:02] Guarding Your Mindset Stop worrying. If there's something you're worried about, what can you do about it? Don't let your worries emotionally drain you. Be transparent and truthful. [34:42] Finding Leads Beyond Your Market It comes down to your portfolio. It'll also come naturally when you've been in the industry for years. But the most important thing to look at is the location. Then, you'll need an underwriting team and process set in place. It's a combination of work, numbers, and reputation. [38:18] Managing Deals with a Large Portfolio It involves a lot of emails and phone calls. Asset management involves insurance and tax assessment. It's beneficial to acquire long-tenant properties and hire third-party contractors. [42:18] The Power of Relationships and Passion in Real Estate Building relationships is fun. It's also about being able to come to work and loving what you do. Age is irrelevant; it's never too late or too early to get into the game. Notable quotes from the Episode:  [10:00] “Real estate is a numbers game. The more time, more calls, more leads, the more you're going to be dealt with. So where others were working 30-40 hours a week , I was working 50 to 60, 70.” [24:42] “Be transparent and truthful. They'll take you so far” [43:06] “If you are called, money will take care of itself. Find your passion. Find something you can't wait to get to work. And if that's not happening, you need to seriously look around and go do something else.”  Resources Mentioned: https://www.amazon.com/Trump-Art-Deal-Donald-J/dp/0399594493 (Trump: The Art of the Deal) by Donald J. Today, I speak to a batchmate, friend and inspiration - Pallavi Barman.Pallavi would absolutely hate it if I said something like "fitness influencer", so let's just say that she's very much into fitness, is a nerd about knowing her own body, is authentic about what she shares on her social media. It's equal part relatable and inspirational for anyone trying to live life a little fitter every day. But she's much more - she's the head of marketing and operations and HRX and I have never seen anyone embody a company and its ethos more than her. Joel Greenblatt is arguably one of the best investors in the world. He is a Managing Partner at Gotham Asset Management, an investment firm he founded in 1985. He has spent more than two decades teaching at Columbia Business School, and he's the author of five books focused on investment strategy, including "You Can be a Stock Market Genius," "The Little Book that Beats the Market," as well as his most recent book, called "Common Sense: The Investor's guide to Equality, Opportunity and Growth." In this conversation, we talk about what's changed and what remained the same in value investing specifically, and more broadly in investing in general. We also talk about how important it is to keep learning, both from wiser, more experienced and often older people, as well as from the next generation. In addition, we touch on the advantage that individual investors have over professional investors, and our ability to think and act with a long-term perspective.  What Is Covered:  - How Joel's investing philosophy has evolved over the years  - “The Magic Formula”, why it still works, and why it is hard for people to follow it - The value of a long-term perspective in investing, Joel's projects in education and charter schools for kids from low-income and minority communities - How the internet and network effects have changed the world of business, and why we're seeing some of the best businesses that have ever existed  Key Takeaways and Learnings: - The importance of accumulating and compounding experience, learning from other people's mistakes, and reading a lot; one of the biggest elements of investing is recognising an outsized opportunity when you see it, and if you see something great, taking advantage of it.    - The returns are very noisy; you could go one or two years underperforming the market, and then make a lot of money in year three or  four that made up for it. People aren't very patient, especially if they're blindly just following a formula.  - Individual investors have an advantage, because they don't have the pressure of their performance being viewed every day, and they can invest and think in private.  - At any time, if you get your stuff together, there's an ecosystem outside your current system that will let you learn. We all have goals and desires for the most important areas of our lives. We want the best for our health, careers, marriages, and relationships. Most of us set out to make positive changes with the best intentions. We hit the ground running, but over time the desires fade, we lose our motivation, and we don't see the results we hoped. What happened? We lacked consistency. Consistency is key to creating the results that we want to see. Yet, we struggle with it. We live in an instant-gratification culture. We want results quickly. We also get distracted, prefer comfort over discomfort, and know that there isn't a high cost to miss a day here and there. So, how do we get started and stick with it? Pastor Danny shares three insights: 1. Decide what you want. 2. Put it on your schedule. 3. Seek accountability. In today's episode, I sit down with Matt Parmer to discuss how to take the next steps to achieve better yields in our harvest seasons.  Matt starts by walking us through the steps we need to be taking each planning season and how this winter “down” time should be utilized in order to make sure when it does come time to plant we are as prepared as possible. We also discuss the importance of utilizing people, teams, and retailers around you.  There is no one-size-fits-all for every farmer, field, and crop which is why it is vital that we try new things, take advice from people who are experts in their field, and take steps to implement tactics and procedures that can take our yields from good to great. We also talk about having the freedom to try new things, and the freedom to discover more about ourselves and those around us, and how thankful he is that his parents taught him this from a young age.  They allowed him to come into his own interests and passions, and Matt correlates that to our mind of exploration that we need in the agricultural industry. Questions asked: What are the steps farmers should be taking right now? Why do you think farmers should have the mindset to try new things? What are some ways that retailers can help farmer's operations? How do we not settle for just ‘good''? Topics covered: Experimenting with what works and what doesn't.  Stepping out of our comfort zone in order to take risks that may yield better results. Utilizing the planning season. Surrounding yourself with the right team.     Resources Mentioned: Outliers: Malcolm Gladwell  https://www.amazon.com/Outliers-Story-Success-Malcolm-Gladwell/dp/0316017930/ Listen to on: Apple Podcasts: https://podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/bin-buster/id1539932560 Spotify: https://open.spotify.com/show/1NeeISyT1fsTgHHlQVhbj7 Castbox: https://castbox.fm/channel/Bin-Buster-id3524084?country=us

Your Parenting Mojo - Respectful, research-based parenting ideas to help kids thrive

Parents - worried about their child's lack of maturity or ability to 'fit in' in a classroom environment - often ask me whether they should hold their child back a year before entering kindergarten or first grade. In this episode I review the origins of the redshirting phenomenon (which lie in Malcolm Gladwell's book Outliers, and which statisticians say contained some seriously dodgy math), what it means for your individual child, as well as for the rest of the children in the class so you can make an informed decision.   Jump to highlights: (01:00) Malcolm Gladwell's anecdote about the Junior League Medicine Hat Tigers and Vancouver Giants ice hockey teams that initiated the redshirting craze (02:56) Ability grouping is done in early childhood, just like in sports (03:59) Parents holding their children back from kindergarten came to be referred to as redshirting (10:20) How common is redshirting? (11:04) Boys are redshirted at a ratio of 2:1 compared to girls (12:18) The maturationist approach of why to redshirt (13:05) State support and agenda for redshirting (15:10) Teachers tendency to view a maturationist view of development. (17:16) The Maturation Hypothesis (17:36) Parents redshirt their children to give their child an advantage (20:34) Redshirting as a way to give boys age and size advantage and avoid getting bullied (27:28) Making a judgement call into what benefits mean with regards to the body of research on redshirting (29:24) The evidence of whether redshirting is beneficial (35:19) Misdiagnosis of ADHD caused by relative maturity (37:56) A year outside of school reduces the likelihood that children receive timely identifications of learning difficulties (38:35) Students with speech impairments may actually benefit from redshirting (39:22) Redshirted students may have more behavioral problems in high school (46:04) Children from higher socioeconomic status are more likely to perform well in tests in kindergarten (48:19) It’s possible that the way the teacher sees the child is what helps the child because of Labelling Theory (49:46) Opportunity hoarding associated with middle-class, white parents. (52:01) Is kindergarten truly the new first grade? (56:06) Advocating for Developmentally Appropriate Practice or DAP (57:35) Almost everyone agrees that retention has negative impacts on children (58:55) Accumulative Advantage (01:00:07) Malcolm Gladwell’s proposed solution to homogenize and my thoughts on it (01:02:32) Summary (01:04:56) Why I think asking "should I redshirt my child" is the wrong question   Books and Resources: https://www.amazon.com/Outliers-Story-Success-Malcolm-Gladwell/dp/0316017930 (Outliers: The Story of Success, by Malcolm Gladwell) https://yourparentingmojo.com/subscribe/ (13 Reasons Why Your Child Won’t Listen to You and What to do About Each One) https://www.amazon.com/School-Can-Wait-Raymond-Moore/dp/0842513140 (School Can Wait, by Raymond S. Even though our guest this week was shot at by white police officers at the age of 11, and later had his house firebombed by racists, he is hopeful that now is a moment of true potential- an opportunity to transform what he calls "America’s racial karma," and, by extension, ourselves. Dr. Larry Ward is a lay minister in the lineage of the great Vietnamese Zen master, Thich Nhat Hanh. He's an advisor to the Executive Mind Leadership Institute at the Peter F. Drucker School of Management. He has done consulting work with Fortune 500 companies around the world. And he has a PhD in religious studies with an emphasis on Buddhism. #027: ¿Cómo practicar aquello de aprender de los errores?

Mil Palabras

Play Episode Listen Later Feb 20, 2020

Sustainability Matters Today
Why The Circular Economy Will Fix Our Waste Problem

Sustainability Matters Today

Play Episode Listen Later Sep 8, 2019 31:44

Did you know businesses can save more money by giving away unwanted items like desks, chairs and medical equipment for free instead of throwing them away? In this episode of the Sustainability Matters Today podcast, I interview May Al-Karooni, CEO of Globechain, an award-winning reuse marketplace that connects businesses that want to throw items away with charities, people, and SMEs that want to use those items. Since starting its operations in 2013, Globechain has over 10,000 customers, they’ve diverted over 5.2 million kgs from landfill, and they have helped over 14,000 communities and 82,400 people globally. Some of their partners include Marks & Spencer, B&Q, Nando’s, Radisson Hotels and the NHS. May and I begin by discussing the ongoing demand for the Circular Model of Economy within the waste management industry. She explains that the Circular Economy focuses on reducing or even eliminating all waste by reusing and recycling all materials. Companies can therefore increase their profits significantly by saving money on materials and supplies. We talk about businesses cutting their waste disposal costs by 50% simply by giving away 60% of what they were originally going to throw away. That’s a win-win-win situation: a win for the business, a win for the charities and the causes they support, and a win for the environment! May was chosen by the Morgan Philips Group as one of the 5 Most Influential Female Online Entrepreneurs of 2019 and Globechain was listed in Forbes as one of The Startups You Should Watch In 2019. And since the recording of this episode, Globechain was also chosen as the Barclay’s Regional Winner for the Social Entrepreneur of the Year Award. This is a really exciting episode. If you know someone who is a recycling warrior and reuses items rather than throws away, share this episode with them! You can find us at sustainabilitymatters.today. Which marketing strategy consistently delivers the best ROI? Over the last ten years, we've spent thousands of hours testing and executing dozens of different strategies. In total they've produced over 50,000 customers and have generated significant revenue. But which strategy consistently delivered the highest ROI? The clear winner, with a 16X ROI, is the customer win-back campaign. And these campaigns can deliver a superior ROI for almost any type of organization. That's why businesses ranging from small SaaS companies to billion-dollar enterprises like Dollar Shave Club use them. Why do they work so well? It boils down to this … It's tough to get a new customer - but it's relatively easy to win a former customer back. Dan talked about their unique 4-Step Process: Survey 10 previous clients and ask them why they left. Narrow their reasons down to 3-4 key reasons. Now reach out to your past clients and ask them which of the four reasons did they choose to leave. Create a marketing campaign around the one reason which stands out and address the problem with a new solution. BONUS - Build partnerships to re-market to new and existing customers. Dan talked about several books and business resources: The Harvard Business Review, March 2016: https://hbr.org/product/harvard-business-review-march-2016/BR1603-MAG-EN 7 Habits of Highly Effective People: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Habits-Highly-Effective-People/dp/0684858398 Outliers – Malcolm Gladwell: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Outliers-Story-Success-Malcolm-Gladwell/dp/0141036257/ Focus – Daniel Goleman: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Focus-Hidden-Excellence-Daniel-Goleman/dp/1408845881/ Blue Ocean Strategy: https://www.amazon.co.uk/Blue-Ocean-Strategy-Expanded-Uncontested/dp/1625274491/ If you'd like to contact Dan personally: you can email him dan@customerwinback.com  I would also highly recommend hopping onto https://customerwinback.com/  and completing their ROI Calculator and also watching the Four Minute Case Study Video. In your business get a non-exec no board and don’t think you're so smart to do it all yourself. There are always things that you can’t think of yourself and you just open yourself up to mistakes by thinking too highly of yourself. FOCUS ON SOFT SKILLS Whether hiring others or improving yourself its the soft skills that are crucially important. I heard a good point saying the future of work is about the 3 C’s - Communication, collaboration and Creativity. These are the skills you need to have in yourself and in others to be able to work with them. As James says, “you get hired for hard skills —> fired for soft skills” so you must learn to take feedback and value it. “LIFE BEGINS AT THE EDGE OF YOUR COMFORT ZONE” If you want to live an interesting life where you take on challenges and have big successes you need to step out of your comfort zone. Embrace the bigger risks and you will be more likely to succeed in it than if you don’t commit and don’t have the fire under your arse to make it happen. Trying to get to the point where you’re performing at a higher level consistently. The things that are involved are drive and determination and a willingness to work hard. And allowing yourself to be successful and putting in the hard work… It is having a clear plan about how you want to do things, and work hard but understand in time it will pay off.” – Nathan McCullum This podcast explores Nathan’s sheer determination in overturning many obstacles to become one of New Zealand’s best and loved cricketers.   Welcome to Student of Life Podcast, a podcast for people seeking personal and professional fulfillment, guided by your host Joe Hafner. In this episode, Joe gives an overview of what this podcast series will be covering in the coming weeks and why he’s so excited about it. He wants to help you come up with questions to ponder in your quiet time, figure out what you’re great at doing and create a space where you know you’re listening to a kindred spirit. Your mind is a ‘use it or lose it’ organ. The goal of this podcast is to always give you reason to be using it, because the learning doesn’t have to end when you finish your education. Remember, fulfillment is not a destination, it’s a way of life. You never really gain full fulfillment, it’s something to always seek. Fulfillment is achieved when the purpose you were created for is fully aligned with your personal core values. A Student of Life A student of life is someone who is seeking personal and professional fulfillment. He or she is a seeker of knowledge, a deep thinker and maybe a bit of a philosopher. Do you have a quiet place where you go and ponder things? Do you come up with tons of ideas and questions? Is your brain always engaged, spinning, thinking? Do you listen to podcasts, read a lot of books, or watch Discovery Channel, History Channel and NatGeo? Are you the type of person who is always learning things and finding out what’s going on in the world? If so, this is the podcast for you. Finding your purpose Do you know your purpose, what God created you for? Seeking fulfillment starts by looking at a few things to figure out what your purpose in life is. There are two ways to figure this out: what you are truly great at, and what brings you joy. Author and founder of Strategic Coach, Inc., Dan Sullivan describes what you’re great at as your unique ability. Everyone has 3 or 4 things they’re truly great at doing. Whatever they are for you, could provide signs about your purpose. Similarly, when you identify the things that bring you joy, it can help you discover your purpose. Think about something you just love to do, that when you’re doing it, you completely lose track of time. How much of your time do you actually spend working in the area that brings you joy, that you’re great at? If you’re not spending 85% or more of your time there, you need to figure out how to increase it because that’s when you will start to have fulfillment. When you’re focused and spending all your time in that area, that’s when you can rise up to your full potential. Core Values and Core Beliefs Renee Descartes, the French philosopher, spent his entire life trying to figure out what he knew for sure. You may have heard of the term ‘cogito ergo sum’ or ‘I think therefore I am’. All he knew for sure was that he existed because he was a thinking being. Core values are not quite that extreme but it’s similar to Descartes’ process in that you look at what you believe and ask yourself, ‘What are the things I believe, that no matter what anybody does, they can’t change my mind?’ You might believe in God, that He is sovereign over the world and your life. You might believe you should have integrity, or honesty, and need to operate that way. If you haven’t thought about that before, start thinking about what your core values and beliefs are. It’s worth the effort to figure these things out. Most people don’t take the time to do it and they just kind of drift along in life without really knowing where they’re going. Your core values are like an anchor that helps you set your path. You can filter life through them to figure out what you believe, where you’re going, and what opportunities you are going to take. There are some people who claim to believe something, but their behavior doesn’t match up with it. If you have a core value or a core belief, you can change your behavior to match what you believe. And if you are struggling with that, then it’s time to think about what’s standing in the way. Limiting factors in your life Most limitations are self-imposed. Most everything that comes in your path that could stop you from achieving your fulfillment can be overcome with the proper amount of time, focus, desire and determination. If you have those four things, you can overcome just about anything. If you’re still reading this, you’re probably willing to make the time to think these things through, and you probably have the desire too. Maybe you need determination or need to learn how to focus. That’s a problem many people have, especially in our sound-bite world. Lack of focus might be limiting you. What about determination and discipline? Are you putting passion and knowledge together to achieve mastery of something? Malcolm Gladwell, in his book The Outliers, talks about the 10,000 hour rule. This rule states that you need 10,000 hours of practice in your area of expertise to really master something, be world class and set you apart from other experts. It’s about learning to grind and doing the little things to make you successful when no one is looking. In Rory Vaden’s book Take The Stairs he says ‘successful people do the things they don’t want to do, even when they don’t feel like doing them.’ Ultimately, that’s the difference between someone who is dissatisfied with their life because nothing ever happens for them, and someone who is a super high achiever, who has everything that they want in life. They take the stairs instead of the escalator. They have time, focus, desire and determination. The timeless, unchanging things in life Many podcasts and thought leaders spend much time talking about how fast our world is changing, about what you should be doing to prepare for those changes, which is definitely important and something that we need to contemplate. However, in this podcast, Joe will spend more time thinking and talking about the stuff that’s unchanging, the timeless things in business and life that prepare us for a fast-changing world. By far, the most important, unchanging truth is that everything in life is about people: family, friends, team-members, customers, vendors, the person in the check-out line, or on the street. One of the things that led Joe to do this podcast is his experiences doing just that on a weekly Facebook video program called Short Attention Span Wisdom. He ends every show by saying, “I believe we can learn something from everyone we meet, all we have to do is ask.” If you pour yourself into people and building them up, you’ll build yourself up at the same time. Some of the things you will learn in future episodes: Core values and how they shape your vision for your life or your business. How filtering things through your core values (decisions, thoughts, people you hire, etc) will help you create a great culture for your family, life and business How focused intensity helps you change your habits and achieve goals The importance of protecting your energy and confidence. How to put passion and knowledge together to achieve mastery of something Tune in for future episodes of Student of Life where Joe will challenge you to think outside the box about things you don’t normally consider to help you on your journey to personal and professional fulfillment. Are Virtuosos Born or Bred? New Paper Renews Debate Over Practice

For the past 20 years, some psychologists have made an appealing argument: that it's possible to achieve success or expertise in your craft by putting in lots of practice time. It's a nice idea: work hard enough and you have a shot at becoming, say, a great violinist. But this is an active debate among psychologists, and a new statistical analysis of 88 studies suggests that the exact opposite is true: that success mostly reflects other factors, like innate talent. The new meta-analysis finds that practice only accounts for only about 12 percent of performance differences across all areas of expertise. For games like chess and scrabble, practice mattered the most (26 percent). In music, it was less important (21 percent). In sports, it accounted for 18 percent and in education, four percent. This week's podcast features a debate over the findings of the new meta-analysis. Our guests are: Dr. Brooke Macnamara, a psychologist at Case Western Reserve University and one of the three co-authors of the analysis. The paper appears in the current issue of the journal Psychological Science. Dr. Anders Ericsson, a psychologist at Florida State University. He authored a pivotal 1993 study which found that made a strong case for the importance of practice in determining success. It has been featured in best-selling books such as Malcolm Gladwell’s Outliers and David Shenk’s The Genius in All of Us. Segment Highlights: Macnamara: "We concluded that deliberate practice is undeniably important – it's just not as important as proponents of the deliberate practice view have claimed." (Deliberate practice is high-quality practice, and often refers to one-on-one lessons in which a teacher pushes a student continually.) "Basic cognitive abilities, other types of experience such as competition experience, the age at which a person begins their training, and personality factors are all likely to play a role above and beyond deliberate practice alone." Ericsson: "When I looked at the studies that Dr. Macnamara included, virtually none of them had training that was individually supervised by a teacher. It's interesting that our original study, when they analyzed it, they found that 80 percent of the variance was explainable by practice, but they decided to throw out that observation because they claim that it was an outlier." Macnamara: "We actually did not throw out the 1993 study. It came out as a statistical outlier so we curbed it down a bit. Even if we look only at the studies where Dr. Ericsson is an author, the overall amount of variance comes out to about 10 percent." Weigh in: How much do you find practice matters in achieving success? How much do other factors play a role? Listen to the segment above and share your comments below.
