In this podcast episode, host Michelle Frechette interviews Kyle Van Deusen, who runs a small web agency in Richmond, Virginia, and founded "The Admin Bar," a community for freelancers and agency owners. They discuss the 2025 WordPress Professional Survey, which Kyle conducted to gather insights from web professionals. The survey, which received 1,233 responses, highlights the experiences and challenges faced by freelancers and agency owners.Top TakeawaysMany Agency Owners Lack Business Fundamentals: A lot of agency owners start by accident, not with a business plan. As a result, many undercharge and lack confidence in setting prices. Kyle pointed out that few are reaching their income goals—not due to market limits, but because they don't know what's possible. This shows a big need for basic business education around pricing, value, and financial planning.Marketing and Networking Are Largely Overlooked: Nearly 60% of respondents aren't doing in-person networking, and many aren't investing in marketing. Too many rely on being found organically, which isn't enough anymore. Kyle and Michelle highlighted that growth requires showing up, building relationships, and actively promoting your services.Community Helps Build Confidence and Clarity: Talking with peers can shift your mindset and pricing strategy. Kyle shared how learning what others charged helped him raise his rates confidently. Community support helps agency owners avoid mistakes, learn faster, and feel less alone in their journey. The Survey Is a Valuable, Underused Resource: Kyle stressed that the real power of the survey lies in how people use it. By digging into the data, agency owners can find paths others have taken to success. The more participation it gets, the more valuable and representative it becomes for the whole community.Mentioned in the Show:https://theadminbar.com/2025-survey/https://theadminbar.com/https://www.facebook.com/groups/2147806538801573

In this conversation, Michael Fisher, founder and CEO of Rotten, shares his journey of building a candy brand from scratch with zero experience in the industry. He talks about the initial trap that many startup CEOs fall into, himself included, of chasing the symbols of success instead of focusing on the business fundamentals. Michael then shares his personal connection to candy and the creative process behind building a brand narrative that emotionally resonates with consumers. During the conversation, we touch on the power of learning from advisors, the role of Kickstarter in validating his product concept, and his focus on healthier ingredients while maintaining great taste. Michael also shares insights on creative collaboration, the challenges of competing in the candy industry, including navigating legal issues with larger brands, and his vision for a better world through diverse product options.Key points from this episode:Transitioning from a startup CEO mindset to a real business is crucial.Learning from advisors and networking is key to success.Kickstarter served as a validation tool for Rotten's concept.A personal connection to candy inspired the brand's focus.Building a brand narrative is essential in a competitive market.World-building with engaging characters enhances brand identity through rich and engaging storytelling. The candy industry is brand-dominated, requiring strong branding to compete for loyalty.A significant portion of consumers are purchasing less candy due to health concerns. The brand aims to attract consumers who have never purchased better-for-you candy before.Formulation challenges are common when creating healthier candy options. The brand has undergone multiple reformulations to improve product quality.Legal challenges from larger brands can be daunting, but also indicate market presence. The goal is to provide consumers with better options that taste great.A better world means offering diverse food options, including healthier choices. Sound Bites:"It's really hard to remember that there isn't a playbook. What's going to work for your brand is going to be a unique path.""I stopped buying a lot of candy, actually, and I missed it. I missed the experience of eating candy.”"I really wanted to have a focus on building a strong brand that people could love.""We have worlds that haven't been explored, you know, Freektopia and all these fun places.”“More than a third of consumers in our category, non-chocolate candy, reported purchasing less candy over the last year. And the number one reason they report that is health and diet concerns."“We are showing that there is demand from people and people are willing to pay a premium for candy that still tastes incredible and gives them some of these health benefits.”“We're gonna win here is if someone eats our candy and it's their favorite candy, regardless of the health benefits.""So that was a fun time for me to play around in my kitchen, but I quickly learned that it's a very technical product to make." Links:Michael Fisher on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/michael-fisher1/Rotten - https://eatrotten.com/Rotten on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/eatrotten/Rotten on Tiktok - https://www.tiktok.com/@eatrottenRotten on YouTube - https://www.youtube.com/@eatrottenRotten on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/eatrotten/posts/…Dr James Richardson - Evolve CPG episode 74 - https://modernspecies.com/brands-for-a-better-world-podcast/focus-on-your-fans-dr-james-richardson-premium-growth-solutions?rq=rampingRamping Your Brand Book - https://www.rampingyourbrand.com/…Brands for a Better World Episode Archive - http://brandsforabetterworld.com/Brands for a Better World on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/brand-for-a-better-world/Modern Species - https://modernspecies.com/Modern Species on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/modern-species/Gage Mitchell on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/in/gagemitchell/…Print Magazine Design Podcasts - https://www.printmag.com/categories/printcast/…Heritage Radio Network - https://heritageradionetwork.org/Heritage Radio Network on LinkedIn - https://www.linkedin.com/company/heritage-radio-network/posts/Heritage Radio Network on Facebook - https://www.facebook.com/HeritageRadioNetworkHeritage Radio Network on X - https://x.com/Heritage_RadioHeritage Radio Network on Instagram - https://www.instagram.com/heritage_radio/Heritage Radio Network on Youtube - https://www.youtube.com/@heritage_radio Chapters: 03:00 Introduction to Michael Fisher and Rotten06:09 The Transition from Startup CEO to Real Business08:49 Learning the CPG Landscape12:00 The Role of Advisors and Networking14:59 Kickstarter: A Launchpad for Validation18:11 Personal Connection to Non-Chocolate Candy21:05 Building a Brand with a Narrative23:55 World Building in Brand Development28:31 Creative Collaboration in Candy Design31:49 Building Emotional Connections with Consumers33:01 Competing in the Candy Industry39:05 Formulation Challenges and Product Development47:42 Navigating Legal Challenges with Big Candy53:39 A Vision for a Better World through Options

Whether you're tuning in for the first time or revisiting it as a longtime listener, we're thrilled to have you with us. With Paul Zelizer, founder of the Awarepreneurs Community and Podcast. Paul is one of the first business coaches to focus on the needs of conscious entrepreneurs and social impact businesses. He also works with leaders to help them increase the transformational impact that they have. Paul is the former Director of Social Media for Wisdom 2.0, one of the premier mindfulness brands in the world. In 2017, he founded Awarepreneurs - two of the things the company is known for is our popular podcast and the Awarepreneurs Community, a dynamic group of hundreds social and wellness entrepreneurs who support each other in growing their businesses, increasing their positive impact and practicing self care. In this conversation, we dig into Paul's path, beginning with his introduction to awareness practices, his roots in service and a career oriented to service, and how compassion fatigue and social work led him to becoming an entrepreneur and coach to other socially conscious entrepreneurs. One of the ways Paul supports his clients is help them in creating massive shifts in their thinking around what makes a business successful - it turns out that the data shows that businesses that are socially conscious, values driven businesses, are navigating the current disruption in the marketplace much better, massively better, than "traditional" businesses. So Paul helps his clients embrace this new paradigm in creating their own path to success. Learn more by visiting the show notes at www.legalwebsitewarrior.com/podcast/paul-zelizer

"Time is money," as the old saying goes, and as such "time management is money management." That was how the great Red Eye Radio host Eric Harley put it near the beginning of this our last in a series of Partners in Business short podcasts on Overdrive Radio, talks excerpted from a long roundtable conducted at the Mid-America Trucking Show this year: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=khKP2WHZjfg&list=PLc1lg9rs1dUBRbJKjvc7UUcJRRd4iI2v3 Time should be a factor in your analysis of any load to truly assess the potential for profit. Overdrive released a bit of a tool to help in that process -- it's a custom spreadsheet that was made available for download around the time of MATS and the big update to this year's Partners in Business owner-operator handbook: https://www.overdriveonline.com/partners-in-business/document/15666632/evaluate-any-loads-cost-in-relation-to-time-not-just-miles The tool clearly illustrates how added time within any load's schedule dilutes revenue and adds costs per mile as fixed costs continue to mount with any delay. It offers a way for you to calculate that impact more or less at a glance, with the input of just a few of your own numbers. The tool was developed by Overdrive contributor Gary Buchs in his efforts coaching individual owner-operators through business decisions large and small. In this episode, voices you'll hear, in order of appearance, are that of our moderator Eric Harley, setting us up for discussion of time management, followed by myself, then ATBS Vice President Mike Hosted expanding with some market timing insight, and Overdrive contributor and now longtime business coach Gary Buchs, previously mentioned. Through to the end, all stress, too, the fundamental value of re-engagement with business fundamentals possible with the PIB program. Here's hope the talk and broader program both give you plenty to chew as you assess prospects and performance of your own business throughout the remainder of the year. The educational program this year is sponsored by the great folks at the Rush Truck Centers dealer network, who share our vision for your success: https://rushtrkctr.com/4bLxbR4 As mentioned in the talk, Matthew Mickenberg's story of valuable timing: he saved $50K on the price of a new truck purchase on account of it: https://www.overdriveonline.com/overdrive-extra/article/15659622/its-a-deal-50k-saved-on-a-new-truck

In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing interview invite news out of Harvard and Duke.  As we get further into the R2 cycle, we are now starting to see more invites for candidates, specifically for aforementioned programs like Harvard and Duke, but also for the likes of Chicago / Booth, Yale SOM, Dartmouth / Tuck, UVA / Darden and Northwestern / Kellogg. This upcoming week, London Business School will release its Round 2 interview invites. Clear Admit is hosting is its monthly Clear Admit+ webinar later today, Monday, February 5. Alex and Graham will take all questions related to MBA admissions. A big focus of the event will be on MBA interview preparation.  On Wednesday, February 7 (and again February 14), Clear Admit is hosting events for deferred admissions candidates, with several leading MBA programs; signups are here: https://bit.y/defeb24 On Thursday, February 8,  Clear Admit is hosting an AMA with UC / Irvine. More details on our website. Graham highlighted Real Humans pieces for Maryland / Smith and ESCP that were recently published on Clear Admit. We then discussed a Fridays from the Frontline feature on a student at Duke / Fuqua, who is pivoting from digital marketing to brand management. Because we have moved into interview season, we are seeing more interview tips being published on Clear Admit; last week the focus was on interview etiquette. Graham then highlighted a recently recorded podcast episode with Georgetown / McDonough that focused on leadership...stay tuned for details! For this week, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected two ApplyWire entries and one DecisionWire entry: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is an army veteran, with a legal background. They have really good numbers, too. Because they have worked for 10 years, we think they need to focus on fit, as well as articulate a firmer long-term goal. This week's second MBA candidate has a really interesting background in the performing arts. Their numbers are very decent, although the quant section of their GRE might raise a concern. Doing some additional course work, like GMAC's Business Fundamentals, might well serve them well. The final MBA candidate for this week has offers from NYU / Stern and UNC Kenan Flagler with a considerable scholarship at the latter. Because of their personal circumstances, we think that Kenan Flagler may be the better option, but it's clearly a tough call. This episode was recorded in Paris, France and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

Dust off those sales manuals and refocus your ferocious energy on sales fundamentals! In this episode, Sleep Summit Show host, CEO of Englander and founder of The FAM, Mark Kinsley, shares his insights from his visit to the BrandSource convention. Packed with interviews from all levels of leadership in the mattress retail industry, each discusses how they and their brands are navigating economic headwinds. Key Takeaways: 1) It's time for retailers to get back to basics and focus on sales fundamentals with intensity and intention. As BrandSource CEO Jim Ristow explained, retailers can no longer rely on inventory alone to drive sales. They need to refocus on sales training, promotions, vendor partnerships and more. 2) Retailers should also dust off old sales manuals and restart former practices of old that made an impact in a more casual environment (hint: bring back those Saturday morning sales meetings). As Mike Juoni of Corsicana said, "look back at what worked in 2019 and prior. The focus has to come from owners and flow through the entire organization." 3) Bring "ferocious focus" to sales interactions, whether on the showroom floor or over the phone. Treat every customer interaction as vital. Plus, don't ignore other keys to success as well, like maintaining ad spend during downturns and promoting holiday sales. Most importantly, Kinsley stressed getting back to sales fundamentals with intensity and intention. As he put it, "More intention with intensity." This combination will enable retailers to compete and thrive even in challenging conditions. --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/sleepsummitshow/message

In this week's MBA Admissions podcast we began by discussing the upcoming Round 1 deadlines for this new season; for this week NYU / Stern, IESE, Cornell / Johnson and Chicago / Booth all have their Round 1 MBA application deadlines; Duke / Fuqua is scheduled to release interview invites for its Early Action round. Graham highlighted our next Essay Insights series, which continues on Wednesday of this week, with CMU / Tepper, Columbia, Georgetown / McDonough, Texas / McCombs and UNC / Kenan Flagler; these events are very popular and bring together the leading MBA programs to talk about their admissions essay topics. Signups are here: https://bit.ly/cafallessays Graham then shared some insights from a recently published Adcom Q&A from Shelly Heinrich at Georgetown McDonough. Our final discussion focused on the recently published MBA class profile for Duke / Fuqua. Their class profile matched some of the observations we identified with the class profile of UCLA / Anderson (the class profile we discussed on last week's show). Fuqua is reporting a smaller class size, while keeping the quality of the class close to constant. We did also discuss the ranges of test scores and GPAs, but we think candidates would prefer to know the medians, or both. As usual, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is from India - and therefore is over-represented in the pool.  At the same time, they appear to have very good numbers and strong work experience, balanced by decent volunteer activities outside of work. They are not over-reaching with their target programs in the first round, and we wonder if they should have targeted 1-2 M7 level programs. This week's second MBA candidate is also a strong candidate, based in the U.S. An All-American athlete from a top liberal arts college, they are working in consulting (MBB) with a focus on the climate. Their only weaker area is a slightly lower-than-average-for-top-programs GRE score. Should they apply in Round 1 with this score (325) or delay to Round 2 with a higher score. We think the latter might be a good strategy, or at least split the applications over two rounds. The final MBA candidate is an entrepreneur who has a great GRE score (333) but a poor GPA (2.9). While they have an upward trend for the GPA, they will need to use the optional essay to add context. They might also consider taking Business Fundamentals, or other similar options to show that they are prepared and committed to the academic aspect of the MBA experience. Operating multifamily properties like a business can yield incredible results. In this episode, Ashley Wilson provides valuable insights into operating multifamily properties like a business rather than just as real estate assets. Her focus on controlling operations, renovating units quickly, and analyzing marketing strategies demonstrates how a business mindset can maximize returns.Ashley Wilson is the founder and CEO of Bar Down Investments, co-founder of Apartment Addicts, and co-founder of HouseItLook. She is a bestselling author, a regular contributor to Rent Magazine, and has been involved in over $210 million in multifamily transactions managing over 1,500 units. Here are some power takeaways from today's conversation:[03:09] Ashley's introduction to real estate[05:22] Why multifamily is the star of the show[08:47] Maximizing success through controlled factors[15:08] The importance of time and internal rate of return in investments[19:07] Why renovate as many units as possible[26:53] Unveiling the power of business fundamentals for success[31:41] The problem with rate caps and strike ratesEpisode Highlights:[05:22] The Resilience and Benefits of Multifamily Real EstateWhen it comes to real estate investing, multifamily properties undoubtedly take the spotlight. Not only because of their solid fundamentals, they're also found to be the most recession-resistant asset class within the industry. Time and again, historical data have demonstrated their remarkable performance. The ability to exercise control over these assets is a key advantage that sets them apart. Additionally, they offer attractive tax benefits, which were previously a concern in the single-family space. Multifamily properties have consistently proven their resilience and have become a reliable investment option for the future. With their strong track record, advantageous fundamentals, and tax incentives, they shine as the true stars of the real estate market.[08:47] Maximizing Success through Controlled FactorsIn order to increase the likelihood of success, it is essential to have control over various aspects. While external factors like interest rates and cap rates may be beyond our control, there are numerous elements that we can influence. For instance, we can dictate the day-to-day operations of a property, manage our marketing efforts, maintain adequate reserves, allocate project spending, and determine the return on investment based on chosen renovations. However, achieving success in these areas requires meticulous attention to detail and the dedication of hardworking individuals. Effective communication and streamlined process flows are key components that fall within our realm of control. By focusing on these controllable factors, we can optimize our chances of achieving favorable outcomes.[26:53] Unveiling the Power of Business Fundamentals for SuccessThis is because the fundamentals of the business remain consistent across different sectors. Graham then highlighted four Adcom Q&As, where we interview admissions directors at UPenn / Wharton, Harvard, Emory Goizueta and Manchester / Alliance. As usual, for the candidate profile review portion of the show, Alex selected three ApplyWire entries: This week's first MBA admissions candidate is an Airforce officer who has already transitioned to the private sector in the aerospace / defence industry. Alex and Graham think they have a very strong profile, all together, except that their GPA is a low, 3.0. In light of this, it might make sense to do Business Fundamentals, MBA Math, or something equivalent, just to show academic preparedness. Their GRE score is a decent 326. This week's second MBA candidate has an interesting profile which includes being first-gen, part of the LGBTQ+ community, and coming from Wales and France. This led to a discussion about the importance of talking about their “lived experience”, which will likely be unique, in this case. Their academics and work experience appear to be very decent. Alex and Graham also like their goals. They will need to retake the GRE, with good preparation, to target a score that reflects their best effort. The final MBA candidate this week is also a military candidate, but from the U.K. Their profile appears to be very strong, overall, except for their GRE score of 320. We encourage them to apply in Round 2, and look to really try to push that score up. They look like a strong candidate (with a good GRE) for the very top MBA programs in the world. He has a 3.4 GPA, but Alex and Graham worry about the relatively low GRE score of 306. It will be important to really try to improve this score, especially on the quant side. It also makes sense to look at MBA Math, HBS CORe or GMAC's Business Fundamentals. This week's second candidate is still early in his career and looking to apply in one or two years' time. He has a strong GPA, and Alex and Graham are hoping he can also attain a very good GMAT score. The candidate is not fulfilled with his current career situation and is assessing his options in terms of which direction to go. Of the choices offered, Alex and Graham think moving to the crypto startup makes most sense. This week's final candidate is a chemical engineer with a strong academic record through to the masters level. They also appear to have great work experience, and are focused on issues that are important (climate tech). We hope they can deliver a strong test score, and will be appealing to the very best MBA programs. This episode was recorded in Philadelphia, PA and Cornwall, England. It was produced and engineered by the fabulous Dennis Crowley in Philadelphia, USA. Thanks to all of you who've been joining us and please remember to rate and review this show wherever you listen!

Another week, another Wiretaps!  As usual, this episode begins with Alex and Graham discussing activity on LiveWire (which is now slowing down as the 2022-23 admissions season gets closer to its end). Next week, Chicago / Booth will be releasing its decisions for its Booth Scholars program. Graham highlighted two events Clear Admit is hosting: The first is a 'Real Humans' event which brings students and alums together to discuss their experiences with candidates. It will be held on June 20 at 12 pm ET, and you can signup here: https://bit.ly/realhumansmba The second is a set of events focused on MBA admissions essay insights, where leading MBA programs will discuss each of their admissions essays. This is a very popular series, signups are here: https://bit.ly/cambaessay In broader industry news, Graham highlighted a piece that looks at Forte Foundation's recently published research into gender pay gaps for MBA students. It appears that the boost someone gets from the MBA is not dependent on their gender, but women still start from a lower base. Graham then noted two Real Humans Alumni Stories: a Georgetown / McDonough grad at McKinsey, and an INSEAD grad at Amazon. Graham and Alex then had two pretty interesting discussions: one on the recent announcement of the shorter form GRE, and the other on the announcement from Columbia about eliminating their Early Decision round, and moving to a more-standard three rounds of admissions. As always, this episode of WireTaps includes three reviews of candidates.  This week's applicants are drawn from three different ApplyWire entries: This week's first candidate works in asset management and has a strong GMAT (760), but will only have three years of experience upon matriculation, if they apply this upcoming season. This led to a discussion regarding whether this season makes sense, or should they wait for another year. The second candidate featured in this episode is a data scientist from India, with a very poor undergraduate record (due to ill health). Their GMAT is decent (710, 51 quant), but Alex and Graham think it might make sense to try to boost the score further. And even with a higher score, it could still be prudent to undertake some more remedial work (Business Fundamentals, MBA Math, or equivalent). Of course, Alex and Graham are assuming this candidate's work experience is strong. They also have some additional non-profit experience to share. Candidate #3 is also from India, and appears to have a strong marketing background, which includes several awards for campaigns they have developed. Their numbers are decent, but not outstanding. Their goals are in the streaming space, whether in the U.S. or in Europe. They also have two years of volunteer experience. Like the second candidate, they should target the first rounds, where they can. This episode was recorded in Cornwall, England and Paris, France. It was produced and engineered in 'always sunny' Philadelphia by Dennis Crowley. Please remember to rate and review this podcast wherever you listen and to 'stay safe everybody'!
