On this episode, we talk with Klassic Frescobar. Klassik's blend of Jamaican Dancehall influence fused into Soca & Calypso sound is the perfect mix. His commanding high energy vocals with the sweet soca vibe creates a unique style that is radiant. Klassik Frescobar's musical influence began in the early ‘90s in his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica in the Constant Spring Gardens area. After getting a hold of his mother's cassette player and hearing early tunes from Bounty Killa, Sean Paul and Beanie Man his mind was committed to music. After migrating to the Bronx in New York, Klassik spent most of his time creating rap music but stayed close to his roots by attending local Dancehall parties. Throughout that time he built relationships with local DJs and producers including the Jamaican born Brooklyn native Ricky Blaze. In 2014 Klassik would migrate to Miami where he would work closely with Guyanese rapper Red Cafe who would introduce him to local DJs and party scenes. After hard work and deliberation Klassik made a name in the Miami Soca scene with records “Boom” , “Bee Sting” & “Chair” His current viral record "Looking Good" on the "Code Red Riddim", facilitated the #LookingGoodChallenge which garnered over three million Twitter and TikTok views respectively. The challenge promotes dancers from around the world to record themselves dancing to the song . Since then Klassik has released bigger records such as “Like Dat Remix” featuring GBM Nutron, “Whoopsy” featuring Boidingo and “Too Much” with Marzville.

Aprile Andelle joins Matt in person for this interview in Arusha, Tanzania.  Matt and Aprile reflect on their time together in Tanzania, as well as their month together in Cape Town, South Africa.  They discuss a number of the inspiring initiatives going on in Langa Township and Kayeltisha township, and then reminisce about attending the Rugby World Cup Sevens together dressed in costume.  Aprile then talks about her background growing up in a Jamaican family, and living between Florida and Jamaica.  She talks about the impact of Jamaican music in her life, from Bob Marley to Dancehall, and shares her top recommendations for visiting Jamaica.  Aprile then reflects on the evolution of her Jamaican-American identity, and shares her experience navigating the very white, affluent, homogenous college that she attended.  Next, she talks about studying abroad in Spain, shares the diversity of the various regions of Spain, and opens up about the overt racism she experienced in one part of Spain.  Aprile then contrasts that with her experience stepping over the border into the Basque Country, and feeling warmly welcomed and an immediately solidarity with the Basque people who were in struggle for their rights as well.  She reflects on how all these experiences with racism and travel impacted her.  Then, Aprile shares her professional trajectory, how she eventually became a psychotherapist, and how she is particularly passionate about serving women of color and people in the nomadic and remote work lifestyle.

There was a moment, somewhere between the 1980s and 1990s, when Black music turned gangsta. This moment shaped two of the world's most influential genres: American Rap and Jamaican Dancehall. The story behind the music is one of oppressed Africans unlocking the ancient powers of their ancestors to break free. The dark side of this story is that many of those Africans, descended from slaves, embraced the pattern of violence that had cursed them for so long, and slowly turned against each other. Was gangsta music the explosion of Black culture, or the implosion of Black power? In the end, the market decides. New mixtape series. Ting called world tour, going around di world musically starting with back a yard. Dancehall is named after Jamaican dance halls in which popular Jamaican recordings were played by local sound systems. These began in the late 1940s among people from the inner city of Kingston such as Trench Town, Rose Town and Denham Town—Jamaicans who were not able to participate in dances uptown.[5] Social and political changes in late-1970s Jamaica, including the change from the socialist government of Michael Manley (People's National Party) to Edward Seaga (Jamaica Labour Party),[3] were reflected in the shift away from the more internationally oriented roots reggae towards a style geared more towards local consumption, and in tune with the music that Jamaicans had experienced when sound systems performed live.[4] Themes of social injustice, repatriation and the Rastafari movement were overtaken by lyrics about dancing, violence and sexuality. www.djnycee.com www.rasfm.com www.fleetdjs.com
