Jason G and I saw Sinners on April 17, 2025. We both enjoyed the movie. Initially, I felt it was boring and didn't care about the characters' backstory. I even dozed off a few times. Jason thought it was a little slow to start, but it improved as the movie progressed. We go into further detail in our spoiler review. Check out the audio and video we recorded right after seeing the film, as usual. Thoughts? Comments? Do so on the blog here. On this episode(These are clickable links with articles and mostly video) Food Recipe Prep-Dehydrating Kale and Tofu My Favorite Quotes from John C. Maxwell's 'The Difference Maker' My 2024 Gaming Year in Review Soca Mixtape February 2025 Happy February, I hope the new year is going well for you. I've been home from work since the beginning of December. I fractured a small bone in my left foot, so I'm recuperating. I hope to return to work and my social life this February. This has given me more time to make content! As listed above on this episode, this is my first food recipe on this podcast. I dehydrate veggies often to get more greens in my diet. In this segment, I dehydrated kale and tofu. They make a great snack and are open to almost any kind of spices and seasonings you'd like to apply to them. In the second segment, I discuss my favorite quotes from prolific author John C. Maxwell's book 'The Difference Maker.' I love the self-help books, and I gravitated towards this one. Next up, I go over my gaming year in 2024. Nintendo, Playstation, Xbox, and Valve provide player stats, which are a lot of fun. I break my numbers down for these last twelve months. Have you(if your game) checked out your player stats for 2024 from any of these websites? Please let me know. Finally, daydreaming of the spring/summer months inspired me to assemble this soca mixtape. Soca reminds me of summer parties and dancing outside with friends. Do you like this new format of collecting different pieces of content to make one big episode, or do you prefer short, 8-15-minute episodes? These collected content-type episodes will be released once a month. I can release shorter content here on the podcast feed, weekly or biweekly. Please let me know. Enjoy the episode! The Callisto Protocol is now available on Xbox Game Pass. When I first saw the trailer, this sci-fi horror game was up my alley. It gave me Aliens, Lockout(Guy Pearce space prison movie from 2012) vibes. The game casts actors we've most likely seen(or heard) somewhere before. The beginning portion introduces us to Josh Duhamel, known for his roles in the Transformers movies, Karen Fukuhara from Amazon's 'The Boys, and Sam Witwer, the voice of Darth Maul in the animated Star Wars Clone Wars series. Playing the first 25-30 minutes of the game, I was immediately drawn into the story. These two cargo pilots are on a 'final job' transporting something. It all goes awry, and one of the pilots, Jason Lee(Josh Duhamel), ends up on the prison planet of Callisto. He is incarcerated for mysterious reasons not yet revealed. He wakes up after going unconscious from being painfully processed into the system, only to find his cell open and the prison in chaos. This is the beauty of streaming a story-based game like The Callisto Protocol. It hooks you from the start and leaves you craving to uncover the rest of this thrilling narrative. I reviewed my journal notes from 2023; these were nine of my biggest lessons from last year. Sugar dating is an expensive alternative to seeing sex workers. I've been seeing sex workers for 6-8 years now, and it was getting old. I met someone in 2023 and wanted to date them seriously, but they didn't in return; I took that as a challenge and looked into sugar dating. I've been doing so since October and learned a lot since then. Now, I have sugar babies and sex workers in my regular rotation. There are growing pains in maintaining this, but I do like the variety. Regular dating sites are a waste of time. I've used dating sites and had some success, but it took time, patience, and messaging other members before meeting someone in real life. When I started sugar dating in October, I signed up and paid a month's subscription to a regular dating site(along with a sugar dating site). Conversations would begin after messaging several people, or they would contact me, but I would eventually get ghosted. Ghosting also happens on the sugar dating sites, but there's often a new person showing interest. The regular dating site was a desert wasteland with little interaction. The results I got in the 30 days when comparing the two were eye-opening. I won't be using regular dating sites for the foreseeable future. Urges for destructive behaviors come in waves; your mind is not your identity. For years, I've used sex, food, and TV to cope with negative feelings and boredom. Urges arise to indulge in one of these activities; I commit, feel the instant pleasure from doing so, but feel terrible after. I thought it was hopeless to change this pattern because this was who I thought I was. Listening to the Porn Reboot podcast, I learned that my thoughts and my urges are not my identity. I programmed myself this way. Urges are waves; they crest and trough. They pass. What do I do now when those strong urges emerge? Have an awareness and self-dialogue on your urges and reasons why you choose to distract yourself. Another lesson from the Porn Reboot podcast; self-dialoguing when those urges come up. Have the awareness to verbalize the series of events that led to wanting to act out with this behavior(food, sex, overabundance of TV and video games). This technique has helped 'walk me off the ledge' multiple times. The hope is to build the habit of doing this process every time I want to self-medicate and sit with those negative feelings. They do pass. Scheduling and following through builds confidence, self-discipline, and capital. This lesson I formed from listening to Ed Mylett's and, once again, the Porn Reboot podcast. I've heard Ed Mylett talk about how doing what you say you will do builds confidence. I started making a to-do list for daily activities and tried to get as much done as possible. In turn, these actions raise my confidence and build capital. What is capital? When those urges arise, I use my to-do list, which I've completed/mostly completed, to show myself, 'Look at all these good things I've done today. Things I said I would do, and I did them.' These good things build capital to fight urges for bad behaviors. These good things include self-care, such as eating healthfully, getting to bed on time, and getting to the gym. Doing something creative, and so on. It's not perfect and doesn't always work, but this method of building capital to quell my urges has helped me. Follow advice from doctors and scientists, not influencers. In 2023, I flip-flopped between a carnivore and vegan diet due to advice from influencers. Their stories are valid because they got the results they were looking for. But doctors and scientists have proven results from studies. Information can change, and doctors and scientists aren't always right. I go the vegan route because I want to prevent a heart attack and/or stroke. My father, in the last few years of his life, had multiple strokes and stents put in his heart valves. Listening to the Carnivore influencers, by choice, hearing that 'cholesterol doesn't cause heart disease,' I thought, yes, let's have some meat, cheese, bacon, butter. But this only increased my cholesterol and weight. I bought these groceries only to eat those foods for two to three days and give the rest away. I did that so many times in 2023, losing money weekly. I eventually doubled down on the vegan diet. I also lost some extra weight and learned new vegan recipes. So many people are currently on a vegan diet, and eating this way has become much more accessible than when I started years ago. Slower reps with weight training and small extra exercises added to my morning routine to keep me strong as I age. In my regular gym near my job, I noticed the personal trainers grifting the gym members looking for new clients to sell their training services. One approached me while working on a rear fly machine and told me to do slower reps for better results. I've started doing this with all my workouts. I don't look bigger, but I feel stronger. Another exercise addition to my routine is a small set of squats, push-ups, pull-ups, tricep dips, and leg raises to my morning routine. Just reps of 10 each. I want to habituate these small, quick exercises to strengthen myself as I age. I learned this from an interview I watched with 57-year-old Dr. Bascom on the Vegan Gym channel. She gave an example of squats, such as standing up from chairs, beds, and seats, and how all these activities require our legs, knees, and hips. Squats can help keep these areas strong. Most times, people want their version of help rather than yours. Working at the front desk of a few NYC hotels for several years, I remember getting frustrated with guests when I offered them help(within the hotel parameters)with their issue, and their becoming even more unhappy with my solution. When I reflect back, I didn't, at moments, take the time to listen to what the customers were saying. I could've made their experience better by resolving their problem with part their wants and the within the hotel rules. It's a basic but worthwhile lesson that can be applied to everyday sales and relationships. Calorie density is a great way to lose weight without counting calories. I discovered Calorie Density When I expanded my knowledge of the vegan diet in 2023. Calorie Density can help with weight loss as one can pile on foods with little to no fat and eat until satisfied. Several vegan YouTube channels give an example: half of one's dinner plate can contain fruits and veggies, and the other half can contain rice, beans, and potatoes. You can eat multiple plates of this food and gain very little weight. Lessening the consumption of higher-calorie foods, such as avocados, nuts, and oils, is advised, as these foods would make you gain weight. On the carnivore diet, I got up to 155-158 lbs. I'm between 143 and 148 lbs on this calorie-density diet, which works for me. These are my nine lessons from 2023. Thoughts, comments, do so below. Thanks for reading. Thoughts? Comments? Reggaefest. I've attended many Reggaefest parties, including a couple of Yacth Fetes and 2022's Blaze party by South Street Seaport. Epic League and CJ Milan have taken this party on the road with stops in Washington DC, Atlanta, Los Angeles, Boston, and Toronto. I believe in this brand and can see a future where it goes to Latin America and Europe—potentially even a multi-day cruise. My favorite thing about the party is the format. The party is called Reggaefest, and they mostly play Dancehall. There's also Soca, Afrobeats, a little Reggaeton, and Ampiano as of this year. They played Hip-Hop in the early ReggaeFest days(a few years ago), but I prefer they don't. Many other parties call themselves Reggae this and Reggae that, but they play close to an hour of hip-hop—false advertising on their part. I also love that there are hardly any performances. Great DJs and great music keep us dancing all night long. Having attended this party for some time and spending my hard-earned money to do so, I have a couple of criticisms. New York Reggaefest has gotten stale. Their fabulous DJ lineup keeps the vibes going, but they play the same songs at each party. A playlist that changes very little. Another criticism is the same venues all the time. Stage 48 is the main culprit. As a fan, I'd like to see a guest DJ at the monthly parties and different changes of venues. Let's do one month in SOBs and one in Irving Plaza—a day party at Knockdown Center or the Elsewhere space in Brooklyn. I wish the Reggaefest team continued success, but I haven't attended as many of their parties this year because of this stale feeling. I'd love to continue going, but please give me more variety. Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse is Sony Picture Animation's biggest financial success to date. Spider-Verse 2 has almost doubled the global box office of the initial Oscar-winning film. Movie pundits say 2018's Into the Spider-Verse run on Netflix helped this unique take on the Spider-Man story, grow a large cult following leading to this current film's winning box office. Vulture.com interviewed 4 of the animators who worked on this sequel and said it was a demanding production—working upwards of 11-hour days, up to 100 artists quitting throughout, and having to start from scratch five times due to pandemic-related starts/stops and editorial issues with Phil Lord. My thoughts; it was my favorite theatrical release of June 2023, over several other notable franchises, including Transformers, The Flash, and Indiana Jones. It made me yearn for more big-budget, superhero, animated films. Visually I noticed it more in this movie than in the first; the mixing of the art styles is incredible-a comic book come to life. Examples include the scene in the third act when Gwen talks to her father; the background turns into these pastel-like colors. Spider-Punk is introduced, and his appearance is in a style of a collage alphabet often associated with the punk scene. Shading on Miles's face using Ben-Day dots to convey a dramatic scene. The Spot monologuing and stick figure artwork present in his design. Once upon a time, I had aspirations of wanting to illustrate comics. I bought 'How to Draw Comics The Marvel Way' by Stan Lee and John Buscema. I spent hours drawing what I was learning from that book. This film is a love letter to comic book art, which took me back to those days. Other notes-anytime you throw in moms and dads relating to their children and kids wanting their parent's support, I get emotional, which happened several times. I loved the integration of the past live-action Spider films where you see clips of Andrew Garfield and Tobey Mcguire's turns as Peter Parker, which was unexpected and made these Spider-Verse stories part of the overall Sony Spider-Man universe. Fast action and, as the first film, contemporary, especially with its Hip-Hop influence and style. Characters such as Miguel O'Hara's Spider-Man 2099, a motorcycling Spider-Woman, and Pravit Prabhakar were intriguing. Potential TV and movie spin-offs? I am here for it. My criticisms-Across the Spider-Verse felt longer than it had to be. It did what 20 years ago, Peter Jackson's LOTR Return of the King, did and had multiple endings. It kept going on and on. There should also be an epilepsy warning. The flashing lights and colors might be triggering. This animated lane is a fantastic way to tell this Miles Morales story. Preferably he stays here and does not come into live action, but with the popularity of this character, it is inevitable. 9 out of 10 for me. Thoughts? Comments? After watching and enjoying the Super Mario Bros Movie(here's my review), I was motivated to buy a Nintendo Switch. Reliving the nostalgia while watching the film, I wanted to experience the latest generation of Mario Brothers games. Come to find out, most, if not all, of Nintendo's first-party games are still selling at a premium price on the digital store (I prefer digital over cartridges). In this video game console cycle, the Switch has sold 125+ million units compared to Playstation 5's 38+ million and Xbox Series X/S' 18+ million units. Granted, the latter two consoles were released three years later, in 2020. Nintendo's Online service has older games(NES, SNES, Gameboy, Sega Master System, etc.) and no Switch games. The movie has crossed 1.2 billion dollars worldwide and is the first billion-dollar film of 2023. In addition, it is the most money-making video game picture to date. As of this writing, Super Mario Bros is now available to view at home, with a price tag of $29.99 to buy and $24.99 to rent. I feel Nintendo nickels and dimes their customers. They are the top dog in video games; why can't they be more generous with their legion of fans worldwide? Sony and Microsoft have subscription-based game services, which include various current and older games. First-party titles too. When I was younger, there were strictly cartridges no digital downloads. Used copies of Mario, Zelda, and Metroid games on the used/trade game market would be substantially cheaper than retail. Making it economical for consumers who couldn't afford to buy the games brand new at full retail. The counterargument is that the game companies wouldn't make any money on their games sold in that market. As an adult, I wasn't much of a Mario fan. I prefer more adult content from a PlayStation or Xbox. But now, having owned the Switch for nearly two months, I'm immensely enjoying the indie games I've purchased on sale at the Nintendo store. I like the handheld and find myself playing it more than my Xbox or PlayStation. Moreso on my commute from work. I'm currently playing Turnip Boy Commits Tax Evasion and enjoying it. Come on, Nintendo, give the consumers a break and lower the prices on your older Nintendo Switch 1st-party games or include them in your online service. If you do, I'll be happy to subscribe. Here's my spoiler review of 2023's first billion dollar movie, Super Mario Brothers. I also share my opinion on Nintendo as a whole. Thoughts? Comments? How was your 2022? Here's mine in a nutshell. Emotions and relationships. Getting to travel twice with family was the highlight of the year. First, traveling to my mother's birth country and staying in a resort with my mother, sister, and niece were fantastic. Then, going to Las Vegas with my mother, sister, and older brother was beautiful and has created memories I won't forget. I'm still not the brother/son/uncle/nephew who calls and looks for family regularly-same goes for friends. Often I'm busy in my world. Some days I'm okay with that; others, I'm not. Frustrations at times with co-workers and my living situation came about. As a result, I've thought of changing my job and apartment. But I'm usually comfortable where I'm currently and not dissatisfied. Of course, there's pressure to be more and do more, but I haven't reached the breaking point yet, and I'm having a fun time in my life. Travel. I was fortunate enough to have traveled four times. First, a day trip to Philadelphia for an All Elite Wrestling show in April. Wynwood, Miami, Florida, in May, attending two dancehall parties. Then in June to the Dominican Republic with family to celebrate my niece's high school graduation. Finally Las Vegas in September again with family to celebrate my birthday. Content creation and publishing. I've released 30 podcast episodes this year and posted 67 pieces of content on YouTube and 66 on Instagram. Forty-eight posts on the blog and 32 on Tik Tok. I also regularly posted on LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter, WhatsApp, Instagram, and Facebook stories. Less than during the pandemic(as I had more time at home). Maybe I overly relied on reviews, as there were 10 of those kinds of posts. Primarily movies and a T.V. show. Event videos on the podcast feed were new such as B.R.T. and the Star Wars Exhibit. So were favorite quotes from a book instead of the 'biggest takeaways' from the past. An excellent way to post content before finishing an entire book. Also, two hand-drawn story strips were new as well. I also changed the name of the podcast and blog from 'Improve and Have Fun' to 'Paul Has Fun,' moving away from self-help and talking about whatever—genuinely becoming a self-expression podcast/vlog/channel. But, again, re-affirming that I would do this whether I got paid or not. Sex workers and porn. There were 31 occasions where I'd seen a sex worker in 2022. Money spent doing so averaged $7905.00; this included purchasing porn as well. I also masturbated to porn 81 times. June was the month I did so the most (11 times), with most other months averaging seven. There were six sex workers I'd see multiple times, along with new ones. There were two terrible occasions; I left without finishing and paying what was agreed. The rest of the prostitutes were good-to-great. I still feel this is cheaper than having a girlfriend, a wife, dealing with a divorce, paying child support, or having children. All these numbers are up from 2021. Prep was the prescription I used most this year. I also started using erection pills, and they did the job. PMO'ing(Porn Masturbation Orgasm) all these years, my erection went soft while doing the act. There was a point I was getting pain around my left lower back area. I thought it was prep. But it was a combination of a Vitamin D supplement of 5000 I.U. and prep. Once I cut the Vitamin D, the pain stopped. I remember hearing Dr. John McDougall talking about the dangers of taking Vitamin D supplements of 1,000 I.U.s or more. Prostitution has been and will always be around. If there is a desire and funds for the transaction, I can have it whenever. Even with the variety, this gets old after a while. Later in 2022, I started alternating between getting a legit massage one week and seeing a sex worker the other to break the monotony and save a little money. Diet and physical. I have maintained a vegan and gluten-free diet in recent years. Mostly out of fear of heart disease. When I indulged in animal foods, I would beat myself up, which would cause me to slip into bad habits such as PMO and overeating. The fear of heart disease came from my dad having several heart attacks and a stroke at the end of his life. In 2022, I discovered Dr. Natasha Campbell-Mcbride's book 'Put Your Heart in Your Mouth.' These points piqued my interest: A high cholesterol count(in a blood test)is okay. It can mean that your body is fighting an infection and, in doing so, producing more cholesterol. Eating organ meats and drinking bone broth is incredibly healthy. A fatty diet helps with cravings and deters criminal activity. Homemade everyday products, like deodorants containing aluminum and fluoride toothpaste, genuinely hurt us. In addition, detergents and fabric softeners contain hazardous chemicals which aren't good for our health. This outlook changed my eating habits and the use of these products. Since reading this book, I have made my own mouthwash and detergent. In addition, for years, I've used aluminum-free deodorant and fluoride-free toothpaste. Body wash and dishwashing soap I use are free of parabens and phthalates. I started regularly eating meat, cheese, butter, and eggs. The weakness I would occasionally feel in my joints went away. My eating window was reduced from several hours to less than two. The downside to this diet is weight gain. During my strict vegan days, I weight between 137-143 lbs. Now it's between 149-153 lbs. Because of the weight gain, I've gone back and forth between the animal and vegan diets. Throughout the year, I've maintained going to the gym regularly, fasting 16-24 hours between meals daily, swimming and dancing weekly. At the tail end of the year, I started running a few days of the week for 10 minutes at a time as part of my morning routine. I also feel more confident in my dancing as learning steps is becoming less complicated and more enjoyable. Significant influences. In 2022, I discovered anti-woke content creators. The road was previously paved by listening to Alex Jones for years and finding the red pill/MGTOW movement later. Youtubers Nerdrotic and Geeks and Gamers, I enjoy their content and contrarian view of popular entertainment. Sometimes they complain about everything, but I'm glad for the dissenting point of view. Their ideas inspired me and my content. Coach Greg Adams, Grace Randolph, and John Campea were influences as well. This year I started reading Robin Sharma's book 'The Everyday Hero Manifesto,' and it helped me be more forgiving to myself. I also started listening to more self-help podcasts after taking an extended break, and it has reinforced in me that I am rich(not monetarily) in life and have an excellent existence. Also, what people present on social media is not 100% real, and I shouldn't compare myself. Finally, the people/celebrities we look up to are gifted, but very much like us-they are going through similar hurts, pains, and struggles. Big Lessons from 2022. The 'Die with Zero' concept. In July, James Altucher published a podcast where he interviewed author Bill Perkins about his book 'Die With Zero.' Mr. Perkins talks about the memories/great times with friends and family as the thing we take to our deathbeds, not our possessions. Also, how we spend so much of our lives accumulating and in the latter half giving it away. I remember going to work and telling co-workers about these ideas. I have yet to read the book, but I intend to. Improving my Spanish. Beginning in 2021, I decided to improve the primary language I grew up with, Spanish. First, I would read the local flyers in Espanol. Then, in 2022 I read my first book in my parents' language, the 'Four Agreements.' After that, I started reading Ray Dalio's 'Principles' and still going through it. My morning routine gives me discipline. So let me develop a night routine. One of my favorite books from the last few years was Robin Sharma's '5 AM Club.' Many other self-help podcasts I listened to discuss a morning routine and how it can make your day successful(by your standards). Hence, I developed my morning routine: prayer, meditation, yoga, daily affirmations, and jumping on a rebounder, which takes about 35 minutes. It puts me in an excellent mood for the day. But I've never had a night routine. One of the evening habits I'm developing is simply going to bed earlier, which helps me make better decisions during the day and grows my confidence. My continuing struggles. A consistent diet that keeps me healthy and strong. Less watching and masturbating to porn. Seeing fewer sex workers. A night routine as good as my morning routine. Invest more money and start building something for retirement. Make new younger friends while keeping my older friends. Communicate/visit more with family. Thoughts? Comments? These are my favorite movies and TV show from June-December 2022. June Insidious 1 & 2 (Amazon & Netflix) I'd never seen the Insidious movies. However, my younger brother watched them and told me they were creepy(which piqued my interest). In June, the first part was available on Prime Video, and the sequel and third films were on Netflix. I binged all three, but I preferred the first two as they wrapped up the Lambert family storyline. Black Phone (movies) The next Blumhouse movie on this list. The movie pundits I follow talked about this Black Phone's great word of mouth from early screenings. Saw this in theaters and was amazed at Ethan Hawke's villainous performance. His 2nd turn as a bad guy in 2022(first in Moon Knight on Disney+ months earlier, but much better here). Umbrella Academy S3 (Netflix) I like the Umbrella Academy and its different take on the superhero genre. The protagonist dysfunctional family consists of odd but likable characters, all with their own agendas, coming together to save the world from destruction. I've rewatched the footloose scene at the beginning of this season multiple times on Tik Tok. July Gray Man (Netflix) An action-packed thriller which is also one of the most expensive movies Netflix has produced. Gray Man is a bombastic summer-style movie usually reserved for theaters which I, like everyone else, enjoyed at home. At least tune in for Chris Evan's fantastic mustache. Paper Girls (Amazon) I read the first volume of this comic years ago and loved it. So when this adaptation showed up on Prime Video, I had to watch it. It wasn't perfect and downright ridiculous at times, but a fun sci-fi ride. Too bad Paper Girls was canceled after one season. I still want to read the entire comic run. Old Man S1 (Hulu) Senior citizen Jeff Bridges is a war criminal/John Wick-type soldier in hiding. When he's discovered and goes on the run, Dan Chase(Jeff Bridges)is not a man you want to cross paths with. John Lithgow is also in this series; his scenes are incredible. Unfortunately, halfway through the filming of season one, the pandemic happened, and Jeff Bridges had (real-life)health issues. The show was initially supposed to be ten episodes but shortened to seven. However, the finale was satisfying. Hopefully, Mr. Bridges will regain his health, and we can get a 2nd season of this excellent show. The Boys S3 (Amazon) The Boys is the show I recommend to anyone who wants to watch the current, best TV program in the superhero genre. Placing in Nielsen's top 15 original streaming programs of 2022, this Prime Video exclusive was seen more than any Marvel or DC TV show. Anthony Starr's performance as Homelander and how his story continues to unfold is tremendous-highly recommended. Stranger Things 4 pt 2 (Netflix) Stranger Things 4 was the summer event for me. Another show I ate up and relished. August Light & Magic documentary (Disney+) In August, I watched two documentaries discussing content from my youth. First, Light & Magic spoke about the formation of the ILM studio and its creation of beloved film series such as Star Wars and Jurassic Park. In addition, it delves into stop-motion photography which motivates me to make my own action-figure stories which I'm currently doing. Milestone Media documentary (HBO) Milestone Generations was the second documentary. The peak of my comic fandom(and for many) was the early 90s. This film chronicled a collection of black creators establishing their own company and publishing comics with their homegrown black superheroes. I never bought Milestone comics, but watching this doc and discovering the modern inner-city stories told, is up my alley. Fascinating documentary. Sandman S1 (Netflix) I halfway read the first volume of Vertigo's critically acclaimed Sandman comic run during the early 2000s, but it didn't connect with me. Fast forward to July 2022, the TV series was announced to premiere on Netflix in August. When the show debuted, I listened to comic book aficionado Robert Meyer Burnett's quick review on John Campea's podcast, and he loved it. He said some shots were identical from the comic book panels to the TV screen, which made me curious. My favorite scene is the battle between Dream(the Sandman)and Lucifer. Thirteen Lives (Amazon) A dramatization of the true story of 13 people who got stuck in a cave in Thailand and the rescue mission which followed. When this movie came on Prime video, two documentaries on Netflix and Disney+ premiered discussing the same event. Thirteen Lives was riveting, and I was surprised this wasn't in theaters. September Cobra Kai S5 (Netflix) Cobra Kai is fun, and I will continue to watch as long as the same creative team and cast stay in place. This past season, Terry Silver and his Cobra Kai students were great villains with shades of gray. The upcoming season six was announced and said to be the last. All good things must end, and that doesn't disappoint me when you go out on top, which hopefully Cobra Kai will. Prey (Hulu) A Predator story done right. Prey shows how one can take an established sci-fi horror franchise and make it simple yet effective. A similar formula might work for another iconic movie villain-the Terminator. Kisstory (Hulu) One of my earliest childhood memories is from Kiss' Phantom of the Park movie, where the band stands next to a wooden roller coaster. I've never been a big Kiss fan but watching them on season 8 of American Idol(2009), Adam Lambert performing alongside the rock legends in the finale, brought back old memories. Kisstory is a 'Behind The Music' type documentary narrated by Paul Stanley and Gene Simmons. A story that educated me on the group's formation, the tours, and the numerous hits they've had over the years. An engrossing four-hour doc which I only put down in-between parts because I had to go to bed. Elvis (HBO Max) I saw this in theaters in March but was tired and fell asleep various times. However, after rewatching Elvis at home, it quickly became one of my favorite films of 2022. The combination of Austin Butler's performance and Baz Luhrmann's direction was an experience I'll rewatch years later. I regularly listen to Austin Butler's rendition of the 'Vegas Rehearsal/That's All Right' song from the soundtrack. Everything Everywhere All at Once (PPV) I'd heard movie critics rave about this movie around the beginning of the year. By September, the film still had yet to come to a streaming service, so I bought it on pay-per-view. Adventure, sci-fi, comedy, drama. I found myself cheering and crying at different points while watching this movie. Another favorite from 2022. Barbarian (movies) I watched this and 'Smile' a few weeks apart. Barbarian is the superior of the two. One of the several small budgets horror films released in 2022 which scored big profits. Highly enjoyable. Even though Barbarian was a better movie than 'Smile,' the latter gave me trouble sleeping. October Werewolf by Night (Disney+) This was a surprise, and I'd like to see the MCU do more. A 'special presentation' introducing a group of characters or revisiting established ones like the 'Guardians of the Galaxy Holiday Special.' The Werewolf by Night himself gave me Wolverine vibes. House of the Dragon (HBO Max) I'm late to the party regarding Game of Thrones—digging into the whole HBO series, like many others during the pandemic. House of the Dragon fills the Targaeryan backstory and doesn't disappoint. I also enjoyed the focus on fewer characters and seeing them grow over time. Green Lantern: Beware My Power (HBO Max) I found this while browsing the DC section on HBO Max. DC, hands down, has excellent animated movies with adult overtones. A space adventure that delves deeper into Green Lantern John Stewart and Adam Strange, whom I haven't heard about in a while. November See S3 (Apple TV+) To me, Jason Momoa's best work is his DCEU Aquaman appearances, and See on Apple TV+. I loved the first two seasons; this 3rd and final chapter was excellent. Watching this post-apocalyptic world where most of the population is blind and living within tribes in the wilderness was intriguing. I recommend See if you're looking for a great, complete sci-fi/action show. Spirited (Apple TV+) It was November, the holidays were around the corner, and there was a giant billboard for Spirited, displaying Will Ferrell and Ryan Reynolds, near the Port Authority bus terminal in Times Square. I thought, these two actors have made me laugh plenty before, so let's check this out. This Apple TV+ exclusive was delightful and had a different spin on the Scrooge story. A heartwarming musical, which I didn't mind. Andor S1 (Disney+) Andor beats any live-action Star Wars TV currently on Disney+. It started slow, but the intrigue and story build as we see the forming of the Rebellion against the Empire. The prison episodes with Andy Serkis were tremendous. The English (Amazon) Another great Amazon Prime Video show that no one seems to talk about. A stoic and violent western starring Emily Blunt. The English put its hooks into me from the first episode. Rafe Spall is also a great villain who you love to hate. Excellent and gorgeous-looking show. December Pistol (Hulu) I'm entertained by these Hulu dramas based on actual events. Dopesick with Micheal Keaton was sad yet amazing. The Dropout with Amanda Seyfried was eye-opening. Tommy & Pamela was amusing. Finally, Pistol, based on the beginnings of the Sex Pistols band and the punk scene in the UK, was interesting, informative, and plays to making your dreams come true even if you don't know how to play the guitar. White Lotus S2 (HBO Max) I watched the first season based on movie critic Grace Randolph's recommendation and found it awkward, funny, and intelligent with a murder mystery thrown in. As soon as the first episode ended for season 2, I was there every following Sunday to gobble up the next installment. The White Lotus season 2 has a dark comedic charm, and I love the soundtrack by Cristobal Tapia de Veer with all the weird chanting. Avatar: Way of Water (movies) As I mentioned, Stranger Things season 4 was an event for me. Avatar 2 was as well. It was long-winded at parts, especially the sections dealing with the whales, but great drama, action, and peak science fiction. Being transported to Pandora again didn't disappoint. Finally, favorites of 2022 Overall(the media below did not have to be released in 2022 to be included). Games (I had a blast playing these games and completed them)- Halo Infinite (2021) (Xbox-Game Pass) Wolfenstein: The New Order (2014) (Xbox-Game Pass) The Gunk (2021) (Xbox-Game Pass) Comics The Woods(the entire series) (published 2014-2017) (Boom! Studios) Wolverine: Enemy of the State (published 2005) (Marvel) TV Yellowstone S1-S4 (Peacock) Reacher S1 (Prime Video) Peacemaker S1 (HBO Max) The White Lotus S1 & S2 (HBO Max) As We See It S1 (Prime Video) See S3 (final season) (Apple TV+) Ozark (final season) (Netflix) Strangers Things 4 parts 1 & 2 (Netflix) House of the Dragon S1 (HBO Max) The Boys S3 (Prime Video) The Last Kingdom S5 (Netflix) Movies Elvis Everything Everywhere All At Once Top Gun Maverick Streaming Movies Thirteen Lives (Prime Video) Gray Man (Netflix) Animated Movies: Turning Red (Disney+) Green Lantern: Beware My Power (HBO Max) Legend of Vox Machina (Prime Video) Documentaries: Light & Magic (Disney+) Kisstory (Hulu) Thoughts? I watched the new Blumhouse horror movie Megan and found it eye-opening. Conspiracy theorists talk about how movies can be predictive programming, and I felt the same after leaving the theater. I see a future where we all use technology similar to Megan. An android or robot that monitors you, knows what you like, can tell you what you want to hear, and gently discipline you. Gives updates on your health and sells goods marketed explicitly to you. How far are we now with virtual assistants like Siri, Alexa, or our smartphones and smartwatches? Other movies demonstrate a similar type of technology, like 'Blade Runner 2049' with Joi, 'Her' with Joaquin Phoenix, and his device 'Samantha.' Something closer to the Megan doll is a UK sci-fi show called 'Humans' where 'Synths' live alongside human beings. They cook, clean, and shop for groceries; humans have sex with them. Cady(the young girl in the film)becomes addicted to Megan. She lets her guardian Gemma(the character who invents the robot), know that Megan makes her feel good, safe, and protected. The film makes commentary on our obsession with our phones and technology; during the movie, a couple of people in nearby rows annoyingly looking at their phones during the film multiple times. Gemma(played by 'Get Out's Allison Williams) is successful and focused on her career but absent emotionally as a guardian. She chooses this role after her sister and sister's husband(Cady's parents)die in a freak accident. But preferring work over dealing with her niece, she decides to have the technology(i.e., Megan) babysit Cady. Gemma also uses Cady for research purposes and advancement in her company. I've seen many parents do this present day when they hand over their phones and tablets to their children to keep them occupied or put on a streaming service with kids' content to keep them busy. Megan and Cady(played by Violet Mcgraw)were both the highlights. Three different actresses and, I'm sure, a lot of makeup, FX, and CGI work bring Megan to life. This killer doll exhibits Ultron/Avengers 2-like powers where she can manipulate anything electrical and connect to other devices via the cloud; I'm assuming wifi and Bluetooth as well. Her face fits the traditional doll face but is creepy. If a doll as advanced as Megan were released under the American Girl line, it would be a big seller! An entertaining and thought-provoking film that isn't scary and has some humorous moments. I can see this new horror character being around for years and having more movies and TV spin-offs. Happy New Year to you! This is the first episode of 2023. I just finished Midnight Fight Express and had a great time with it. I played it at home after work for 30-60 minute sessions. I didn't follow the story as I would listen to podcasts in the background while playing. However, the enjoyment of the presentation and the game, beating up the bad guys(& girls), and unlocking new fight moves kept me going. The game has a New Game plus type mode where after you beat it, you can select levels and replay them with all your new unlocked skills while skipping the cut scenes(if you wish). Very convenient, and I wish more games would do this. Another great feature is the easy-to-use photo mode. The player can pause the game and take a picture of their current progression. I loved using this feature, especially in Remedy Entertainment's 2019 game Control. Afterward, sharing these images on my social feeds is fun. (SPOILER)I was satisfied with the ending as the heroes (your character and a talking drone that follows you throughout the game) look at a sunset while both mortally wounded. I was left to assume they died after. The Scorpion Queen boss was where I got stuck for some time. Finally, out of frustration, I put the controller down, watched a gameplay video on Youtube for this particular section, and eventually beat her. I found a great article discussing the tropes inside this game compared to past beat-em-ups, movies, and TV shows(see that article here). Such as going up an elevator and fighting your way to the last boss, beating up a biker gang, and even fist-fighting zombies. Here's a link to that article. The bosses and villain intros were fun too. One was an overweight mid-boss called 'Smiley' who looked like the DC Comics Joker character. The website howlongtobeat.com says the game is about 6 hours long, which is perfect. As a working adult, I have limited time to game, but I want to play more often. These 5-10-15 hour games are perfect to chip away a little at a time. I want to complete and discuss more games, but 40-50+ hour commitments are too much unless they are compelling. Thanks to Xbox's Game Pass service and the How-long-to-beat website, shorter, excellent games are readily available. If you're a fan of beat-em-ups, side-scrolling brawlers like Streets of Rage, with a combat style similar to the Batman-Arkham games, Midnight Fight Express is for you. Thoughts? Comments? Renowned DJ Kevin Crown held his R.A.S. (Reggae Afrobeats Soca)party at HK Hall in NYC on Christmas Eve 2022. My friend Mami (previous podcast guest)and I are fans of his and dancehall music. Ricky Platinum and several other DJs played great tunes and even called us on stage. We had a blast! I love going to dancehall parties, I do so all year long. This was my final one for 2022.
