This week at The Corner of Story and Game, I get to talk with James "Jim" Lowder - one of the earliest editors to work on the Dungeon and Dragons fiction line. In his time there he helped launch the careers of such amazing authors as Elaine Cunningham and Christie Golden. Jim is also an award-winning author himself - having worked on the Avatar Trilogy that helped usher the Forgotten Realms from 1st Edition D&D to 2nd Edition (is anyone else still bitter about their assassin character dying off-screen?) He is known for his work in fantasy, dark fantasy, and horror - with publications such as Prince of Lies and Knight of the Black Rose, short fiction for such anthologies as Shadows Over Baker Street and Genius Loci, RPG material for Call of Cthulhu and Dungeons & Dragons, and comic book scripts for Image, Moonstone, and DC. As an editor James Lowder has directed novel lines or series for both large and small publishing houses. He served as executive editor for Green Knight's Pendragon book line and as line editor for TSR's Forgotten Realms, Ravenloft, and Dark Sun fiction releases. He's helmed more than a dozen critically acclaimed anthologies, including the Chaosium release Madness on the Orient Express. Currently, he is the Executive Editor at Chaosium. Our conversation explores many aspects of Jim's career, his insights into the editing process, tips on submitting to shared IPs, and much more. We end up going very deep into creator rights and IP holder rights, and how to get the best worldbuilding and storytelling. Lane Heymont and I have a far-ranging discussion about books, movies, publishing, the evil of the Sackler family, the nature of forgiveness, his path from being a literary assistant to founding The Tobias Literary Agency, why it's crucial for him to be passionate about the projects he represents, why writers should always be writing, moral clauses in book contracts, the consolidation of major publishers, being a mensch, and so much more. Lane's love affair with literature began at the age of eight when his grandfather offered him $5 to read and discuss the classics of literature. He began his publishing career in 2012 at The Seymour Agency and in 2016 formed The Tobias Literary Agency. With his eclectic taste and particular passion for horror, Lane is the top literary agent in the genre. Some of Lane's favorite reads include: FRANKENSTEIN by Mary Shelley, THE HUNGER by Alma Katsu, SKELETONS AT THE FEAST by Chris Bohjalian, KNIGHT OF THE BLACK ROSE by James Lowder, the DRAGONLANCE CHRONICLES by Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, IN COLD BLOOD BY Truman Capote, I KNOW WHY THE CAGED BIRD SINGS by Maya Angelou, and THE DINOSAUR ARTIST by Paige Williams. His favorite writers include Sheridan Le Fanu, Mary Shelley, Margaret Weis and Tracy Hickman, Alma Katsu, Chris Bohjalian, and Lovecraft despite his politics and gross bigotry. Lane represents a broad range of commercial fiction and serious nonfiction. In fiction, he is open to projects broadly defined as speculative fiction. He is most interested in horror defined however one defines it. This includes select young adult projects. He prefers contemporary settings and is always looking for own voices projects by BIPOC, LGBTQIA+, and other underrepresented cultures/identities in both fiction and nonfiction. In nonfiction, Lane acquires celebrity projects, science, cultural studies, history, and pop-culture.

Lord Soth, the Knight of the Black Rose, rules the domain of Sithicus in the world of Ravenloft, but his grip on power is beginning to weaken. Forces from inside and outside his realm are uniting to overthrow him. The death knight has faced the Heroes of the Lance on Krynn and Count Strahd von Zarovich in Barovia without flinching, but a figure from his own past may be his ultimate undoing. For centuries, the death knight Lord Soth had terrified the people of Krynn. Now something beyond the material world has taken notice. Lord Soth is drawn into the dark realm of Ravenloft, to the domain called Barovia, ruled over by the merciless Count Strahd von Zarovich. With the help of two new allies, Soth must escape the vampire lord and find his way home. In the Land of the Mists, however, home can be a fleeting thing. A special discussion on the work of Robert Chanbers, drawing from Ken Hites’s research for his new annotation of The King in Yellow. Where did black stars rise before they hung over Carcosa? What inspired the King in Yellow, whom emperors have served? Whither syphillis? Robert W. Chambers’ “The King in Yellow” has inspired horror authors from Lovecraft to the present darkening day. Kenneth Hite, annotator of Arc Dream Publishing’s new “The King in Yellow: Annotated Edition,” dives deep into the cloud-waves of Hali for the origins, evolution, and influence of Chambers’ haunting tales. A 1979 contract between Random House and TSR would take 18 years to kill the company that started the role-playing game hobby. Thanks to historian Micheal Calleia, Ben has a copy of that very contract, and discusses how it led TSR to near bankruptcy in 1997 with TSR alums James Lowder, Chaosium’s executive editor, and John Rateliff, an internationally renowned Tolkien scholar. Ben’s book on RPG adventure design, Encounter Theory, is on DriveThruRPG. Click here to pick up this essential volume! Like Plot Points? Support it on Patreon at the $2 level, and you’ll get a sneak peek into Ben’s book about the sale of TSR to Wizards of the Coast! This chapter concerns TSR West, an effort by TSR to open an LA office devoted to producing comic books, an effort that failed rather impressively. It is the product of a dozen interviews with professionals from comics, gaming, and Hollywood, and as far as I can reckon, it is a tale entirely untold until now. Image courtesy Wizards of the Coast. Interview with Kenneth Hite at GenCon 2007 0:37 - I sat down with frequent guest Kenneth Hite at GenCon to talk about what we saw at the show that excited us. 1:26 - This show is a member of the Goblin Broadcast Network. 1:33 - Ken and I weren't able to do this at GenCon last year, as he was at Ropecon in Finland. He's glad to be back. 3:34 - Both of us were tremendously impressed by Jason Morningstar's Grey Ranks, a game about the 1944 Warsaw Uprising. 6:12 - Ken got a glimpse at Julia Ellingboe's Steal Away Jordan, a game about slavery in the antebellum American South. I had the opportunity to play in a demo of it, and it deeply affected me as well. 10:13 - I tried to pick up The Savage Tales of Solomon Kane from Pinnacle, but it was sold out. 11:50 - Neither of us have a had chance to read Monte Cook's World of Darkness or Changeling: The Lost from White Wolf, but they look great. 12:49 - Both of us have had a chance to look at Blossoms Are Falling, the newest supplement Burning Wheel supplement, covering Heian-era Japan. 13:47 - We talk about the Ashcan Front, using Paul Czege's Acts of Evil as an example. 16:09 - Oh yeah, and Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition was announced, but we don't know that much specific about it. That doesn't stop us from speculating. 20:33 - Edited by James Lowder, Hobby Games: The 100 Best is a great collection of essays by one hundred game designers about their favorite games. We recommend it, and not just because Ken is one of those hundred. 23:58 - Both us were jazzed by different parts of Post-Apocalyptic Hero, the latest Hero System genre book. 24:36 - In the quick hits segment we talk about the Pirate's Guide to Freeport, Dirty Secrets, The Committee for the Exploration of Mysteries, and Blood and Bronze. 27:23 True to form, Ken manages a seamless segue to talk about the forthcoming Trail of Cthulhu before we go. 28:42 - Don Dehm from the Parsec Award-winning Pulp Gamer podcast says hello. 28:48 - I'll be back next episode with my interview with Monte Cook for Inside the Game Designers Studio. --PaulDiscuss this episode in the HG,WT forum.
